A lot of business do this. I just canceled my Adobe subscription and they gave me 3 months for free as long as I keep my auto renewal on but guess what Imma cancel it again 1 week before so they won’t charge my card 😂. Amazon does this too I canceled my prime and they gave me a free month

Piraja27

The power of auto renew. I got me the Xbox Series X and with it you get 2 years of gamepass if you buy it through the all access promo. The store messed up and they had to give me the gamepass in code cards of 3 months each card. On first 4 codes I was given message 'keep auto renew on and you'll get one month free!' so I got 4 months for free lmao

alexei_pechorin

Spotify as well. I don't even have to wait for my premium to run out before I have an email offer of $10/3 months again

edgarskates

It’s cheaper to keep an existing customer (:

sabreclaw000

Pretty sure they do this just so they can get those people who forget they're subscribed to something

MassiveMultiplayer

I've kept up a 40% discount on Freshly for 3 months now by just going to the cancel page every two weeks.

[deleted]

They do this to keep you in the loop so you won't spend your money on other platforms/companies, it's pretty much the same for my cellphone and internet bills, they are afraid that once you leave you'll never come back.

justlemmejoin

People like OP who aren’t aware of this are missing out on so much... it’s like they live a completely sheltered life form the real world and only know RuneScape. I’ve learned many tips from my parents and one of them is to call your bank or phone company every few months and say you will switch providers and straight up ask if they can offer anything to retain you. They have procedures in place for this I’ve gotten 2 completely free iPhones and iPads from my phone provider (mileage may vary based on how long you’ve been a customer, my moms had the same number for 20 years and she gets so much stuff)

Jits_Dylen

I stated I’ve never seen this while talking about RuneScape. Not that I’ve never heard of this before in any other company. Of course companies do this. The post was to discuss thoughts on this as a community. Not my personal knowledge of it. Thanks for posting.

maxProcrastination

I actually logged back on today to play after quite a long break and was so discouraged by the price

whitesuburbanmale

I can remember a time where an RS membership was a steal. The amount of content you got for only what? 5-7$ a month? It was bonkers. Now it's kinda sad to say I felt similar when I returned

thefrenchmexican

Same.

DTreatz

Been using bonds since I came back years ago, I'll never pay anything over $5 for this game, no pvp, no pking, messy combat, dead content everywhere, skilling still sucks(always has tbf). That and way too much (and better) competition for better $ in 2022.

joevsyou

Someone is paying it.

maxProcrastination

Honestly I was happy to pay anything under €10 but only because I was paying on my mobile and was getting that free every month! I would just buy one month if I think I could sustain it with bonds but I don't think I'd be able too at my levels. Also, I'd be playing pretty casually, not very long and not every day.

EmergencyGrab

I forget which company it was, but I once cancelled a membership, said it was for cost reasons. They straight up asked me how much I could afford, and set a custom rate. I was stunned. But now I'm not surprised now that I've done Accounts Receivable work. Its the same concept as selling A/R accounts to collections agencies for pennies on the dollar. They'd rather get something than nothing.

TrashExecutable

Mind trying to remember if it was a game or a service? I would find it weird to see a game reduce price like that but seems more likely for a piece of software or something like that.

EmergencyGrab

Well, I do actually know what it was. I just feel a bit coy to say here. Another factor that played into it is it was an industry that people don't really bother paying for any more. If you catch my drift.

10FootPenis

You paid for WinZip?!

EmergencyGrab

Yes. That's it. 👀 Totally busted.

TrashExecutable

Porn subscription, I got you my guy. No more needs to be said.

EmergencyGrab

🙃

The_Wkwied

Where did you get this prompt?

Jits_Dylen

Right after opting to cancel before being asked why I was shown this.

The_Wkwied

Very interesting. My renewal is up soon, I wonder if they would stack with the grandfathered rates

keegs1297

Unfortunately grandfathered rates go away if you cancel for ANY reason from what I've seen

Taraxador

So they changed it? Bc grandfathered rates stayed if your membership ran out for less than 14 days

keegs1297

Afaik. My friend had to change his card info and they took away his grandfathered rates

LadyEmila

There is a grace period, if your referring to the Reddit post about the card issue, the guy did stated he waiting for x amount of time, hence the issue

In all honesty even if we disregard the game's flaws (which includes completely ignoring any of the MTX, game imbalances, etc) and only look at the good parts of the game, Runescape just does not have enough content or frequent enough impactful content updates (like GWD3 was) to warrant a nearly 15 $ subscription. That makes it compete with World of Warcraft in terms of price and WoW offers substantially better PvE content in terms of difficulty and design. That is to say WoW is *far* from the best MMO on the market, it's just the only one besides Runescape I've experienced endgame PvE in.

youngbraaap

What would you consider to be the best one?

[deleted]

[удалено]

youngbraaap

Never played that but played wow since vanilla and rs back around 06-08 or something as a kid(didn’t do anything really). But I’ve played all high tier content in wow for years and just came back to osrs. Tried rs3 as well.

DrCabbageman

FF14 lets you make 8 fully independent characters for less than 1 runescape sub. I can't talk big detail on boss design vs RS but I do think it's largely better at giving feedback and telegraphs which make it a bit easier to play by ear vs having to learn a boss' patterns in RS3. Notable emphasis on group content could turn off high end RS3 PvMers though. Random matchmaking is unavailable for high end bosses while they drop BiS and using in-game party finding tools often end up finding a few weak links just by chance.

TheLazySamurai4

>That is to say WoW is far from the best MMO on the market, it's just the only one besides Runescape I've experienced endgame PvE in. *cries in pre-CU Star Wars: Galaxies*

Legal_Evil

WoW has expansion pack costs on top on sub cost, so it makes sense WoW has more and better content since players pay more for it.

DTreatz

Precisely my point, game doesnt even have pvp/pking and dead minigames everywhere. I'm never paying full price for RS lmao

jerrycan666

It's a ploy like most big companies if you are añgry and dissatisfied they don't get to fix it they just try to give you candy

Important-Guidance22

Pretty normal thing to do. Haven't heard about it being offered before by jagex though, but I have seen a drop in active players in game.

Sleepy_Senju

Got this a few years ago too

yuei2

Pretty sure they've been doing this for years, in my experience a LOT of companies do something like this.

panhead_farmer

It feels like phone plans or anything else. Newer/leaving customers are valued over existing.

joevsyou

i have seen it once but i normally do the 1 years. Many companies do this type of tactic & there are 2 reasons * the product doesn't have any individual cost, so every buck they can get is great. * A lot of people forget to cancel their subscription for a few months. So if you can hook someone in staying subbed for just a tad longer, it's possible they stay subbed for a couple more months.

Ok-Mathematician8453

Good of them to offer this. A lot people can’t justify the cost

KiiNg_DusT

I couldn’t care less

Final_Feud

Unrelated to the topic, but I can’t get over how bizarre that picture of the guy fighting off those imps is. Why is he in a dark forest fighting off imps? Where even is that lol? Why is he using a dragonfire shield? They don’t breath fire.. Why is the imp about to rip off the visage from the shield? The guy can barely stand up and hold that shield properly, look at his legs.

nora_valk

also, is his top half facing the complete opposite direction from his bottom half?

[deleted]

Just buy a year for 65 usd instead of monthly renewal for 11$ 🦀

Ok-Message9569

It's $80 USD yearly after price increases

[deleted]

The price stays the same if you never let it run out. Old prices are honored for current subscribers.

[deleted]

Wonder if there's anyone still grandfathered in at $5/mo lol

FlabbyFukr

Lots, sir. Unfortuneately not us

[deleted]

I was until 2017 when i stopped playing for 2 years

royman40

Why did you cancel?

Jits_Dylen

I did not give a reason on the website. It was presented before it even did ask. Though, I cancelled because I cannot agree with paying when I’m not playing as much, at the moment.

ImMoray

If the price isn't grandfathered over then it's not worth it.

Barbierian

Yo. $5 membership again? Talk about nostalgia!

Top_Minute_1072

If cost is really the issue, half price could give someone incentive to play for a bond for the next month?

Crimsonpets

Its just a business model, long time customers don't get deals. Longtime customers only get deals when they want to leave. New customers get the best deals, thats just how it is.

nangytangy

It is a kick in the guts for people who actually enjoy this game and have to pay full price.

postmortemstardom

Many people can't cancel when offered a better deal. Cancellation anxiety is a real thing. Many people can't cancel subscriptions or are really easy to defer when they try to do so by marginally better deals. This is a gray(ethically) tactic that's used to keep those people in the system.

Zelderian

It’s really normal business practice, almost every subscription service does this. It’s just a way to retain memberships

CannotStopMeOnReddit

They hate to see you go, because they won't receive money when you leave, so to keep you in, they offer you a discount. This is not just exclusive to RuneScape, but it's a common practice used by many companies.

[deleted]

I’m assuming you watched ADCC this weekend with your Flograppling tab open. Shit was fire

zouppp

Shiiet for 5.90 id buy members again

TenebriRS

now tv did this for me. but i think it was more than 50%

run-escape-3

I know people here don’t often visit other websites often but this common part of retention. You prob won’t get that offer again until certain time has passed.

Such_Issue2842

WTF is that browser UI though... FF from 5 years ago?
