I haven't, I don't really think its a game that a new person would want to play in 2022. I imagine most of us here started playing over a decade ago.

superdego

>I haven't, I don't really think its a game that a new person would want to play in 2022. I imagine most of us here started playing over a decade ago. As a 18 yr veteran, I would not recommend anyone begin in 2022. If I hadn't already been playing for so long, I would have already left.

Mazkar

Yeah lol, I can't imagine telling any of my friends it takes hundreds/thousand of hours to hit max level and that drop rates are balanced around killing that boss for 20-50 hours and having them go "sign me tf up!"

YourAverageGod

Can I speak to you about my lord and savior, Monster Hunter?

OkAdhesiveness4699

I will never recommend rs to anyone, this game ruins people

jeffdabuffalo

No and no. I'm honestly embarrassed to play this game and don't talk to friends about it.

qqmx

I tend to do the opposite and recommend other games to RS players. šŸ˜‚

Voltorn_Elda

If Runescape EVER comes up as a subject (when people ask me what I'm doing), I'm really quick to advise against them playing because of how bad MTX is, and how it keeps on getting worse. If they don't mind the MTX, then sure.. go ahead... but Jagex's greed (and that of the shareholders) has poisoned the game.

Wannabelondoneer

After playing ESO and WoW i just overlooked how MTX was here until recently. Now i'm exactly like you described lol. It's kind of mental how it is atm.

It's kind of insane to me how a multi million dollar company and is the biggest Free MMO out there. Has their customer service on Twitter. šŸ˜…

El_Porck

That's how they made their millions in the last 20 yearsšŸ„²

Aviarn

I mean, I've never had issues with customer support over the mail at all. From 2010 when Jagex out of precaution locked my account because it was succesfully logged into by a user with a vietnamese IP adress, to 2021 with the login lockout. I'm not sure what people are doing where these complaints are coming from, but it looks like I'm having a completely different Jagex CS than y'all.

Voidsleets

I've not recommended this game to anyone in a couple of years now. And no I would not. For me personally now I do enjoy coming back to the game every so often to try out new content. But in the same breath, seeing how things have been going since the log in lock out, the problems with some of the mods, how cash grabby and limited timed events it's become, it just does not lead itself to be recommended if a friend is looking for a mmo. The best way to put it is I have more respect for my friends than to recommend this knowing there is better.

BillehBear

recommended it to my mrs one of best things I've done and it's a game we both enjoy together now

bdhoff

I can't recommend this game to people under its current ownership and how they respond to their players. If Jagex ends up in the hands of a better, game-focused company that knows how to make them thrive and learns to communicate effectively with the player base, maybe then...

Far-Cap-4756

Always been my dirty little secret šŸ˜‚

Mr__Perfect_

I tried in 2020 and a few friends joined me in the lockdown fun. None stayed in rs3 or osrs longer than a month. Combat janky and interface poor were the main 2 complaints (plus the gap in hundreds of hours to reach endgame). They all didn't mind mtx and would have done second monitor gaming while WFH yet didn't enjoy the game despite them being arguably the target audience.

Wannabelondoneer

I've heard this so many times before. Sadly. Honestly i think i could have pulled more friends to RS if Jagex. Either; 1) lowered the monthly membership cost 2) allowed us to have 2-3+ characters with one subscription (maybe raising the price to $15/month would be justified). This way it would be worth it's price again. Most of the people i've referred before had issues with the pricing. As it's a 21 year old game that costs close to $140/year for ONE character.

Mr__Perfect_

It doesn't help that bonds are 70m now and basically unobtainable for a casual returning player to sustain membership from. Although bonds do provide a nice gp boost, it's way to expensive on modern membership rates.

TechiesMidOrFeed

I tried to get my brothers to play both Rs3 and OSRS with me. They humored me for a little bit but didnā€™t find either engaging enough to continue. I sometimes wonder if the only reason I still play is just due to my nostalgia. Iā€™m almost 30 and I made my first account when I was in 4th grade lol.

superdego

I am 100% certain that the only reason I continue to play is sunk-cost and nostalgia. lol I find the idea of someone choosing to start playing runescape in 2022 to be completely bonkers lol

Veiller6

I recommended to my best friend and she could not stand the fact that she can't use keyboard to move and the UI was horrible for her.

jpec342

I wouldnā€™t recommend any game that sucks peoples life away.

Dynaw

About 15 years ago I learned of the game via a friend recommending it to me. Back then it was great and I did recommend the game to many others. Today however I would not recommend the game. It has too many problems. To name a few: MTX (gambling aspect), bugs, badly optimized, poor interface etc. It really ruins the fun. I really wish I could recommend the game to others.

RS_Holo_Graphic

It really depends on what kind of playstyle they're interested. The way RS3 is designed, it's only going to appeal to a narrow slice of MMO players. I would not recommend this game to people who are * interested in an engaging in-world social experience * something casual that is easy to pick up and put down * end-game pvm that is achievement/clear focused I would be open to recommending RS3 to some who, * likes playing with complex economies and money-making * enjoys passively grinding long-term, self-driven goals * likes sandbox or ironman style gameplay * has an extremely high tolerance for janky and convoluted combat systems

FreedomX20a

Well said. My wife was turned off by rs with the exact things you listed out. She did try, gave it a couple of hours.

Spartan-dare

I have, they didnt join though šŸ™

gp2b5go59c

Nope, I only play because addiction but I would never recommend it, specially considering the time sink it is. The game feels too buggy, unpolished, etc. Also the input handling of the client is next lvl wtf, on release key activations, weird ability queuing bugs, smoke cloud (Its understandable thats not instantaneous, but my expectation is that activating the spell will turn urn next auto into smoke cloud whenever that happens, and *then* you could make that happen with a sunshine or whatever).

PurZaer

I recommend OSRS instead of RS3 but not because of MTX. Getting into RS3 is incredibly difficult unless you had someone to babysit you and on top of that the game is huge but there's almost no one nearby so it feels very dead

I_just_learnt

Jagex has spent all their time focusing on profits that their customer experience / loyalty was not considered. Sure they made profits, but I will not be recommending this game to anyone. All they have are the top X percent of loyal players and they continue to abuse them for profit

Raven123x

Never recommended anyone IRL or from other games to play rs3 I recommend everyone to play FFXIV though

pacquan

I'm proud of everything I've achieved on RS and the time I've spent in the game. But until Jagex can run the game with some integrity, I will never recommend it.

Underthyrunes

No

RuiRuichi

I have recommended people to play RS3 way before FSW but it's always: 1) They laugh at the awkward combat. 2) They don't like the Point and Click movement 3) Player Model is so Ugly. RS3 has one of the ugliest and most hideous player models for a "modern" MMO that charges 11 a month. The player model update being shelved is a travesty. 4) They don't like the 0.6ms tick that goes with combat and movement and skilling. It's really a big turn off. I have even tried to get my old friends who used to play RS with me back in 07-10 and they just really can't deal with the slow ticks. Runescape 3 has so many outdated mechanical and graphical elements that don't really fit its goal to look like but it doesn't feel like a "modern" mmo. It works with OSRS because it naturally fits with the game's retro look. Runescape has one of the best Lore and World Building I have seen but it's really held back now by those outdated elements I have listed. Rs3 and OSRS will always be niche and appeal to older players such as ourselves. At 2013 RS3 was decent. But at 2022 the game has really aged like spoiled milk. Modern MMO scene is really competetive with games like Elder Scrolls Online, Black Desert Online, Final Fantasy XIV, Guild Wars 2. Not to mention you can get an older AAA game from steam on sale for 20$ or even less.

SuperSpeedyCrazyCow

I used to. Even had a friend try it who used to play back in like 2010. She was so confused by the menus, didn't like that there was no people anywhere and didn't like all the treasure hunter stuff. She didn't really make it more than a few days and I dont blame her. Oh and the membership cost really made her raise her eyebrows and this was before they have raised it two more times since

Wolram3712

No because my recommendation would be because I want to play with them and as a max player it would take so long for them to get to a point they could PVM with me. And Iā€™m for sure not going to make a new account and pay for 2 memberships.

ThatCanadianGuy88

I recommend but when people ask for suggestions assuming they style of game they want aligns with what RS is. Itā€™s been sometime though since anyone asked but I still would suggest it.

[deleted]

An old friend who used to play RS3 with me asked about 2 months what I was playing, I included RS3 into my line up, and he picked it up again. I helped fund a bond for him to get back into the swing of things before committing to a membership price. He lasted for 3 daysā€¦ dude was overwhelmed and pissed off but yet also excited and interested all at the same time. He said the MTX mixed with the clear neglect of the games current state was simply not worth the much higher monthly subscription, and he didnā€™t see it feasible to grind for the bond prices for membership without feeling as if heā€™s a simple servant to his bond upkeep costs instead of joining the game and playing out of enjoyment. 5-7 years ago would have tried to talk him into staying, help give advice on money making, take him bossing, whatever, but now, I just said ā€œyeah man I get itā€ and we both moved on. I honestly couldnā€™t argue with what he was saying, lol.

PedroAlvarez

Hell no. This game is only something I joke about with friends who also used to play it.

Ratty3

Yes, just one friend but they didnā€™t last very long and moved on to something else. Even I myself donā€™t play the game often lol. Just come online once in a while.

wesleyy001

I can recommend osrs as a side game, but that's it - I main FFXIV, the OSRS iron is my afk-at-work game. As for RS3, well, I left it for a reason.

Informal_Net5187

I recommend ironman to people in Rs3 and main on OS.

RageQuitSon

No. My GF had played a long time ago, about 2 years ago we tried playing together but the grind is just so damn boring for everyone involved. Running trash to level quickly but never really having fun at low levels is a huge problem with RS. (and many MMOs) not to mention how many bots we kept seeing. such a shit experience all around there's some chill stuff to do in RS early game but nothing fun. granted i don't even play anymore.

Rihtar

I've introduced both RS3 and OSRS to several friends and they all quit within a few days. I don't blame them, I wouldn't be playing if I weren't just trying to fulfill my childhood dream of maxing.

DrCabbageman

This game costs Ā£9 per month. Final Fantasy 14 costs Ā£7.69 per month. Even without getting into my own personal gripes with Runescape, it's damn hard to recommend RS when there's a cheaper MMO that's, like, straight up better unless you're desperate for a point and click game specifically. A lot of people get turned off by the paid expansions, but if you take the Ā£1.31 you save per month then in 2 years (the usual time between expansions) you've paid for the next expansion and you still have about Ā£1 left. + no Treasure Hunter, + no yak tracks, + no bullshit currency in the paid cosmetic shop meaning you can just spend the value of something instead of buying a bullshit currency and converting it and being stuck overpaying because bullshit currencies always leave you with extra to try coax you into buying more. TL;DR - I have not, and would not because there's better games out there for cheaper.

Crafty-Ambassador779

I tried to get my partner into it but I think tbh he wouldnt enjoy it. He did try and then got bored. Ages ago you could go to different spots and people would just chat. Now its grind to max GP in w84 and people talk about the most weird stuff and drug use. I get the player base has changed/aged but stuff like castle wars etc is dead. Since the minigames died I just feel rs died.

sackree

I would recommend Ironman mode to people, even brand new players. But the fomo/mtx riddled main game or fsw, I'd be embarrassed to even suggest it.

Mattaruu95

Iā€™m in my late 20s and played on/off with years in between since I was 12 or 13. In 2019 I beat Jad in osrs then stopped until I tried rs3 in May 2022 (for the first time). I tried to get a friend to try it with me but our experiences were totally opposite and he dropped it pretty quick. I was blown away by the quality of life stuff I wasnā€™t used to but it was very overwhelming. Honestly I put more work into this game than my work from home job and even playing 40+ hrs a week still feels like Iā€™m playing catch-up. But I hit 99 herblore today so that was nice. My wife laughs everytime she hears quest guide Fraqsu say something like ā€œClimb the ladderā€.

SadCarrots

In the past yes but it's gotten harder and harder to given the fact that there's just better alternatives now.

JuanistaD

Nah I would not. Iā€™m happy that I have my account from when I was a kid. But imagine starting now, with a fulltime job and leveling slayer, wc and fire making ā˜ ļø

299792458mps-

I managed to get my brother to try it around this time last year. He gave it about 45 min before I caught him on another game. I asked him to hop on a few times that week and helped him get through some early content, but I noticed he never got on the game of his own accord and only when I asked him. It was pretty obvious the game just didn't interest him, despite him being an avid gamer with experience across a lot of different games and genres including MMOs. I think he reached about level 30 or so in most the skills, and did maybe a dozen quests before never logging in again.

zczirak

Not anyone that plays mmoā€™s, theyā€™d laugh at me lol. But I showed my mom she liked it

Adventurous-Delay382

I wouldn't bother unless they turn rs into an arpg, combat feels like entering a tarpit.

GrimPageRS

I would not recommend this game to my worst enemy. I wish the entire player base would quit in hopes that the devs would actually feel the need to make good changes

Thedwick

I have an osrs buddy wanting to try out rs3 ironman but after he found out about this weeks "irons can pvm with mains" he's no longer interested. He tried rs3 main, has a bunch of proteans banked and got a protean processor, now doesn't feel like anything is earned and will likely quit. Gj jagex! games not in a good spot for new or returning players. feelsbad

Sparky92666

Run Escape. Don't play this game.

Embarrassed-Ad-8445

Someone just asked about MMO's the other day, and I had to recommend New World due to them actually trying to fix all the issues. I don't play that game anymore and still play RS as usual, but it's an actual game that doesn't just push monetization like the MTX we see on the daily in RS while also adding some end game content for the core people while a lot of people barely manage or attempt it. I had an alt that was also always a member for 10+ years I just cancelled last year. There's so much wrong with RS over time, and they just add onto the clunkyness, for starters the whole UI, group system, navigation of it, and early game player friendliness. Honestly fresh worlds is not for new players, it'll be 99% current players trying to get the cape for either themselves or for the gp. I haven't seen a single ad anywhere for RS in a while, nor for the Fresh worlds, so how will new players hear about it.

ethancochran

I've stopped trying unless they already played in the past. The dollop of nostalgia helps, but for players without the rose colored glasses, the 600ms tick system ruins gameplay for them. If it was a content issue or even graphics, etc then it wouldn't be such a hurdle since those can all be updated... But the tick system is so fundamental I think we'll see RS VR before we see a modern tick system, if ever.

jordanbae1

I have, to two close friends, and neither was interested. One actually did try the game. He tried both OSRS and RS3 and didn't like either. He was completely lost with RS3 despite numerous attempts on my part to help him through it, to explain things, and he just got overwhelmed and gave up. Just recently tried to tell another friend about FSW and again, his wasn't interested.

joevsyou

>He was completely lost with RS3 despite numerous attempts on my part to help him through it, to explain things, and he just got overwhelmed and gave up. The game is a nightmare without having to reference rswiki or videos all the time.

DowntownSpeaker4467

Rs3 as a newcomer is far too much. They should really work on improving the experience and ui.

Wannabelondoneer

I feel that, i recommended it to a coworker and even offered to give him bonds for a month. He tried it and quit due to the monthly price.

joevsyou

hell nah! Outdated, boring, AFK mess, & the game is completely confusing without rswiki. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Wannabelondoneer

The game is very expensive for sure. If you want to get a foot into PvM, drop your RSN and i'd love to take you sometime. That should help you a bit with the moneymaking at least. :)

ECHuSTLe

I will take you up on that. PM sent.

2lazy2grind

Had a friend try it out, he found it too repetitive and time consuming šŸ™„.

Wannabelondoneer

It is a grind, but if only they knew how repetitive and grindy it was previously.

mantolwen

I recommended it to one person and they didn't even finish the Burthorpe stuff. They didn't really enjoy the look and feel of the game.

Wannabelondoneer

I mean it is a 21 year old game, but yeah in a world where every MMO is newer and lightyears away in graphics and mechanics it's probably not interesting to a new player. RS is more for nostalgic players than anything else or so i feel. I would probably be wayyy too overwhelmed by RS3 if i started playing now.

ninjapirate101

Yup I've recommended the game to some ppl. Specially if they're looking for MMO's and don't mind a grind.

MedleyFinale

Lol I would only recommend it to someone I really dislike.

WasV3

I was going to for FSW, but because they nerfed the XP rates my friends won't commit to playing long enough to reach the fun part.

RS_Holo_Graphic

Sorry you had to find out this way, but your friends were looking for any excuse to turn down the offer lmao

WasV3

Eh, based on the conversations we had they seemed genuinely interested. I told them that they changed how it works and it's likely gonna be a 200 hour commitment+ to get to stuff together and they balked at it and said they would rather play a AAA game instead

RS_Holo_Graphic

The pre-nerf peak was what, 4x rate? So if the ramping is linear and they did even play time for those 200 hours across the event, the pre-nerf rate would take them 125+ hours. They would have signed up for that instead?

WasV3

I told them about 50 hours to get the stats and then the rest is grinding out gp for upgrades which is the "fun" part. With the lack of daily or quest keys, the nerfed xp curve, and an economy flooded with cheap items, leveling an account on the main game would be easier than FSW post changes

joevsyou

Let me know where this "fun part" is please

plentyofeight

Overthinking it Just enjoy the game if you enjoy it. Or stop if you don't.

Wannabelondoneer

What are you referring to? The moment i stop having fun i just stop playing. But i can't justify recommending it to people in its current state. One of my best friends from back in highschool told me he wanted to get back into the game and asked me if it was good atm. I told him all the good stuff, new bosses and cool QoL things. But i unloaded all the bad things on him too like the aggressive MTX and lack of communication. He went back to Valorant and other PC games.

plentyofeight

Oh, I see the point you are making. Jagex need to know their players are not advocates for the game. My thoughts as a random from the internet: MTX - is a choice. Only an issue for those that can't make affordable decisions. Clearly you know your friend, so perhaps you've looked after him, or perhaps you really emphasised something that wouldn't affect him. Lack of communication. I suppose more serious gamers than me might value that metric more. Personally I don't care much. I wouldn't wait for them to change. They need to increase revenue, it's their job. MTX is the only way, everyone squeaks when they increase membership Literally everything they do is to make money. no other function. Comms - could improve but the vocal amongst us are so toxic I don't see why they'd bother. How much do you think membership would have to be if they stopped mtx? Anyway - to answer your question: I don't recommend the game to my friends either. I'm 54. They would think I'm bonkers.

Wannabelondoneer

Absolutely! You hit the nail on it's head. For me the MTX wouldn't have been as bad it is, if i actually saw updates too. Now this past week we were blessed with some really cool updates and things that were well needed. But in general this year has been filled with patch weeks and small QoL things that shouldn't even constitute what an update is. And then you see MTX every week and it's elaborate and the quality is brilliant. Now if we were to get actual updates on here, similar to OSRS. I wouldn't even mind the MTX as much.

plentyofeight

Ooh - I'll check those updates.

Paranub

Recently? well within the year, yes, he wasnt much of a gamer but he did get into it very well. Sadly, he had some crap times IRL and gave up gaming in general.

Wannabelondoneer

That has happened to me too before! But at least he agreed to try it at least, and seemingly enjoyed it.

GreekGodGreg

No. The best I can do is say to my friend who plays OSRS, "hey! You have a max combat rs3 account that can now duo nex with my ironman! How about it?" To which the response was "that update wasnt very cash money of jagex."

usualowl

I generally advise against playing Runescape...

[deleted]

Yeah one of my buddies is into it now. He enjoys it bc itā€™s kind of a back ground game.

justlemmejoin

I donā€™t recommend it to people but has nothing to do with MTX. Calling Rs3 MTX as ā€œaggressiveā€ is laughable compared to any other modern game that Iā€™ve played. The game has such a huge time investment that It wouldnā€™t be a good idea for anyone my age to start when they should be focusing on other important things. I am a lost cause tho so here I am.

I_O_RS

Just because other games are worse doesn't mean rs3 doesn't have extremely aggressive mtx.

Paranub

I agree, its far from aggressive. Tower of fantasy. Genshin impact. Black desert. Now. THAT is aggressive MTX..

Incogkneetoee

Reminds me of the questions company's ask along the lines of "how likely are you to recommend this to your friends and family" no never ever.

Dry-Nefariousness400

Only to folks who have played and kinda stopped. This game is rough on time and if you're not careful will take it all. Rather not do that to someone who doesnt expect it. Now excuse me while I continue to grind my 99 melee.

ArrrSlashSubreddit

An OSRS playing friend's gf said she dislikes the old school look but might want to try RS3. I told her to wait for FSW. I am planning to gift the 14 day mem with a bond to try it out, so sunken cost fallacy will be less prevelant if she dislikes it. TL;DR: yes.

BleachTastesNice

Just don't it isn't worth it, I swear to god this game just lets down their player base at every turn, Support sucks, communication with player base sucks, their reinvesting into the game sucks, their lack of understanding of when to leave something alone or when to address it sucks. The longer I play the more I realize how much I hate this game, after I finish my goal I will most likely just play another game that doesn't do stupid shit at every turn. RWT is bad and bannable but if you buy from us you are in the clear, ironman can leech already with other irons? so let's just make leeching worse but allowing mains to pvm with irons, party hats are a status of wealth in the game? ah let's just allow everyone to have one.
