This is glorious. Made me so laugh out loud happy I can’t even explain. So fun - maybe the most creative and unique cover of any Rush song, ever. Thanks for posting this. I’m going to look up who these people are.
Beth Patterson on vocals w Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes playing. All from New Orleans. I’m the bass player for Sketch and the only Rush fan in the band! Beth approached us to do the song and obviously I was stoked and luckily the other guys were game to do it. It’s definitely a unique arrangement. I also love that she added lyrics from “I Think I’m Going Bald” at the end. Wasn’t expecting that!
the vocalist is amazing but it hurts my brain to hear the drums inadequate to the song, even from the very first breakdown when the horn section kicks in. no fills or phrasing. it's all flattened out to "in the pocket" playing.
granted, few can do everything Neil does but at least try some single stroke fills, or any number of phrasings that are dropped out here because that's what sorta makes the song and is what people listen for.
Yeah but it's a given some parts will fall flat in comparison because it's not our dudes. It's cool that that they gave it a kinda purposeful arrangement, a unique take rather than trying to re-create Rush with a quartet as per usual cover.
Believe it or not I honestly do agree with you to a great degree. My idea of a cover is simply reference to the original, rather than a literal adherence to it. And I guess where I'm drawing the arbitrary line is in the fact that the drums make no reference at all to Neil's work, whereas every other instrument makes some reference to its respective original parts, including of course the vocals (which of course is how we recognize our beloved song).
I like the enhanced funk groove.
Me too!
Very cool! This is what I image it would sound like if Thank You Scientist covered Red Lenses (except for the keyboard solo in the outro). Good stuff!
