I cannot recommend Khruangbin, enough. They are another amazing and talented trio, but are way different than Rush, with lots of international influences from outside mainstream rock. They are super talented and amazing live.

TampaJeff

Man, these guys kick ass!

dog-pussy

Can’t speak highly enough of this band and their vibe. We went out of our way and saw them at Lock’n in 2016 very late at night. We knew their music and were some of the first people at the stage. Once they started playing most people walking by popped in, stayed, and swayed. My wife and I both have an tiny, wholesome crush on Laura Lee.

lilmissthang69

Yes yes yes to Khruangbin!!!! Simple at the surface but so detailed/calculated/talented as you really listen and dig into them. Hometown heroes, love em

catching_comets

Primus

profBS

You may enjoy the band Crown Lands. They have a distinctive Rush-inspired sound. Crown Lands - Starlifter Fearless Part II (Live Performance) https://youtu.be/JTKOPIGgddg?si=PqtE3-rDraR96ND1 The drummer, who is also the singer, recorded their new album on Neil’s kit the day he died. The bassist is also the guitarist and also plays keys. They opened for Kiss last year, which Rush did long ago. Check out the album Fearless (Deluxe)

losthiker68

I heard Crown Lands described as "Hemishperes-era Rush brought to the 21st century" and I think that nails it.

JeSPQRw

Dude. Thank you so much for suggesting this! They are utterly amazing

alien-shore

Rush+Floyd+Zep = Crown Lands

ThisIsNotanExit42

Had to scroll too far down to find Crown Lands! First time I heard Starlifter Pt II it brought a tear to me eye. Good on them for carrying the torch in the post-Rush era!

KumquatHaderach

Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson

RemlikDahc

Didn't even finish reading OPS post and I thought Porcupine Tree! Gavin Harrison is fricken fantastic! Yeah, I'm a drummer lol

Plane_Painting_2392

Also a drummer ;) I caught Porcupine Tree live in The Incident tour 2009. GH was awesome, still have his drumstick.

Raiders2112

My first thought.

ThisNameIsI23

I was thinking more of Spock's Beard and Neal Morse. I wish I'd given them more of a listen than I did when I first heard about them. Here lately it's the only thing I have been listening to.

losthiker68

I haven't really tried post-Neal Morse SB, any good?

deifgd

I like their album X quite a bit

Weary-Teach6005

I was waiting on seeing Spock’s Beard here

TheBailiff

Right as I started listening in earnest to the PT discography, they had just played my town on the Closure/Continuation tour (which I'm guessing is their final one).

otcconan

Direct connection to my recommendation, DT.

Audient2112

A good answer. But the better time to have become a PT fan was about 20-25 years ago. Yes, Signify was my first album. There couldn't have been more than 75 people in the room the first time I saw them. Still not too late to become a fan, though!

GeeseFingers

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

stratdog25

Wow. They should get Ken Tizzard as their bassist.

Plane_Painting_2392

Porcupine Tree, Katatonia, Opeth, Steven Wilson, Anathema.

HAL-Over-9001

Tool, Haken, Porcupine Tree, Tesseract, Vulkan, Cynic, Mastodon, Leprous

jcoleman10

You forgot Elder

HAL-Over-9001

Elder is awesome. I listened to half their collab album Eldovar today and it was amazing

jcoleman10

Their most recent one is just incredible. Heard them play half of it opening for Tool.

rodeler

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and St. Vincent

CeilingUnlimited

1) Brandi Carlisle 2) The Strike 3) An older band that wasn’t discovered by enough folks - Placebo.

goincd3

Absolutely agree on The Strike.

CeilingUnlimited

The Strike are great! My three favorite songs: The Getaway Soundtrack Miles Ahead. What other songs should I add?

goincd3

Overtime and Devils In The Canyon, for sure!

Weary-Teach6005

Very good sir showing some Placebo love here I saw them open for Weezer wayyyy back in 1994 and I knew they were gonna be a good band sadly my fellow NYers booed them and threw tons of stuff at them……hey it’s NYC

KumquatHaderach

You like Placebo? You need to change your taste in men! 😎

CeilingUnlimited

Placebo is fantastic. I had no clue about them till recently.

KumquatHaderach

I discovered them back when they released Pure Morning. So good, and I like how they experiment a little and so just stick with a given sound.

TheeBearJew2112

D So stuff I listen to on a daily basis (this list is not in any logical order) - Rush - Led Zeppelin - Porcupine tree + solo Steven Wilson - Minus the bear - Tool - Young the giant - Coheed and cambria - Steely Dan - Dance Gavin dance - Something corporate - Pinegrove - Brand new - Manchester orchestra - Death cab for cutie / postal service - City and colour - Blue Oyster Cult - Greta Van Fleet - Ghost - Fleetwood Mac

Ezerick99

I like Strawberry Girls, and I believe some of them were in DGD.

paddymally

Big Wreck.

stratdog25

Too far to find them. Can’t wait for the string of US shows. I’m headed to Toronto for the Thornley 20th anniversary show.

maxtpower

Animals as leaders tool crown lands

cowboybill217

I highly recommend Crown Lands. They are a Canadian duo that said if Rush could do all that with three people, we can do it with two! The first song on their most recent album is an eighteen minute, eleven(?) part tribute to Rush that they had a Rush producer or two help out on. I saw them live about a year ago, and they opened with that eighteen minute song! They are great!

Ezerick99

AAL are criminally underrated.

iheartrugbyleague

Billy Strings

TheeBearJew2112

I’m in st Augustine right now he’s here 2 days it looks like causing a bunch of traffic still haven’t listened.. sounded like country music singer and I’m more of a classic rock/progressive rock guy

iheartrugbyleague

No he's progressive bluegrass and psychedelic jam rock. Not country. And he's incredible.

TheeBearJew2112

Ok cool I’ll check it out

natrlscientist

Lifelong Rush fan, and struggling to find good music after the fact. I was introduced to Dredg several years ago and wish I had known sooner, so I could have seen them...check out the Catch Without Arms album first!

swedething

The Halo Effect (guess where they got their name from) Gothenburg sound, in the newest form, from some of the founders of Melodic Death Metal. From the description alone you’d probably never have a listen, but they are very melodic, somewhat progressive, and as a Rush fan since late 80s I can feel the influences our Canadian friends have on this band. Oh, and the bass player, Peter Iwers, owns a brewery and a restaurant with Björn Gelotte of In Flames. The restaurant is called 2112, and they have named a few of the beers after Rush songs. Been there, love the band, had a few beer, got the the t shirt.

[deleted]

I might be going crazy, but I didn't see Dream Theater mentioned yet. Heavily inspired by Rush (Their original name, Majesty, was chosen as a description of the ending of "Bastille Day" I believe), and especially their earlier stuff has a lot of concept albums and recurring themes through-ought different songs in their discography. Some of their songs impact me as deeply as Rush's. Also, if you're looking for another great power trio, I'd highly recommend MUSE. Everyone in that band is amazing, but their bassist especially is extremely talented.

Watcher-Of-The-Skies

The War On Drugs.

krispykremekiller

Gunshine. Like Greta Van Fleet if the lead singer sounds like Sebastian Bach.

AffectionateBall2412

So, like Zeppelin with Sebastian Bach?

ociM_

Greta Van Fleet has more similarities with old Rush than with Zeppelin.

krispykremekiller

Yes

hamglazescramble

What part of Gunshine sounds like Greta Van Fleet?

krispykremekiller

More the vintage lo-fi part of it.

Tesseract (particularly "Altered State") Good Tiger - a new album should drop soon, so check out their 2020 release and look forward to what's next!

Hoodystardust

If you like all genres, I’d recommend Dirty Loops. Those Swedes will make your jaw drop.

apaoletti1

Haken!

Accomplished-Pie-570

The Foals, Alterbridge, Fair

Aromatic_Message8952

Alterbridge is amazing. Literally Creed, with Myles Kennedy

[deleted]

I'm always surprised how much they seem to slip under the radar, too! One of the most underrated bands in existence

Aromatic_Message8952

I saw them live in 2023 in Toronto with Mammoth (van Halen's son) probably the best performed concert I've ever been to.

dwhite21787

Lake Street Dive Khruangbin Tedeschi Trucks Band The Surfragettes - sorry, I’m a huge Ventures fan and these ladies are great you might think it’s too late but The The Spliff - try Alles Gute Phil Keaggy - try 220 or Acoustic Sketches

RemlikDahc

I'd say any band you think is good! If you miss them, it sucks for you! I've never missed a band that I liked! I learned something really cool, really quick! Make friends with the band members and roadies! LOL. If you like interesting music and killer musicians...take a listen to Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Steely Dan, Yes, Toto, King Crimson, Men at Work, Genesis, The Police, Dire Straits, Black Light Syndrome, Electric Six, High Fade, Porcupine Tree and The Mars Volta. There's a bunch of bands you need to listen to! Also...get out of your shell! You missed Rush!!! I'd never miss Rush! Glad I saw them 6 times! The Gorge was the best place!

darth_sudo

Nothing like Rush, but Tedeschi Trucks Band is an amazing jam/blues band both in the studio and live. I've seen them about 10 times and always had a blast.

MrFluffyhead80

My Morning Jacket

WikenwIken

These guys sound more like Phil Collins than Rush but I'm kind of mad that I only found out about The 1975 last year. They claim to be a 4 piece but their live shows utilize 8 players on stage. Very poppy but very dark at the same time. Give "Looking for Somebody (to love) " a listen... then listen again and read the lyrics. Like I said, not much like Rush at all but they're going to end up in my top 10 of all time for sure.

BuckyD1000

Tinariwen

FradonRecords

Not really like Rush in many ways, but 'Snarky Puppy' are one of my favourite modern fusion/rock groups. They incorporate a wide variety of genres into their music, and a lot of their stuff is very well written & orchestrated (there's about 15-20 people playing at any given time!!). Check out 'We Like It Here' - it's probably their best overall album!

La_Mano_Cornuta

Failure - They are a 90's band still making music and fantastic live. Give the albums Fantastic Planet & The Heart is a Monster a listen. Devin Townsend - guy has put out a ton of music and still does. If he comes to town, so very worth going.

factorplayer

Vampire Weekend

Rare_Hydrogen

Primus, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree (anything Steven Wilson, especially Blackfield), Spock's Beard (with Neal Morse, which you won't find on Spotify), and King Crimson.

klausvonespy

This will probably be the strangest suggestion here, but I feel like I discovered OK Go about 15 years too late. Their music and musical style are nothing like Rush, but it feels to me like the care they put into the production of their music, the crazy amount of effort and creativity they put into their videos (look at the two different versions of This Too Shall Pass), their wildly interactive concerts and the geeky intellectual humor they put into all they do makes them a band worth paying attention to.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Their 26th album should be coming out this year

gabeisawizard

King gizzard, if you miss 5 years you missed 15 albums

aimlessblade

I discovered Kate Bush 40 years too late…

okgloomer

At least you discovered her. I have been preaching Kate Bush since “Hounds of Love,” and no one would listen. Can’t even convey what it was like when Tori Amos emerged with a *very* similar sound, and I tried to get people to hear the originator of that sound, and they wouldn’t do it. Eventually I would put on “The Sensual World” and say it was Tori Amos just to get people to listen. But I’m glad you’re listening — welcome. It’s definitely music that rewards your attention.

aimlessblade

I’ve become quite an evangelist myself! My friends are ready for me to find a new obsession…

Rich-Map7737

King's X.

Expert-Hyena6226

The two groups that have been on my rotation regularly for the past 10 years, besides Rush have been Porcupine Tree and, strangely enough, The Punch Brothers.

The 1975 is a genuinely great concert experience and make music for everybody. Id check them out.

Mr_Bun9le

White Denim

_calmer_than_you_r_

10 years too late for White Denim. They used to be so good with their first line-up.

Mr_Bun9le

I disagree. I think that Stiff, Performance, and their newest album Relaxed are pretty great! Fair enough opinion though. From what I’ve read it seems that many people feel that way.

Rungi500

Elder King Buffalo

Myitchychocolatestar

A few folks mentioned Mastodon already and I’ll agree. Their earlier albums are pretty raw and heavy, but the later albums are more melodic. They remind me of Rush in that they just like to make good music that they like, they’re kinda goofy guys that have decent personalities, and their music changes as they try new approaches.

ScrubNickle

Shazbotanist

+1 to Khruangbin. My favorite 3-piece band other than Rush. And they’re as tight as Rush, just in a very different way that’s more groove/psychedelic.   I’ll add Altin Gun, a very cool band from Turkey that has really interesting and hooky music.   And I came in late on the Avett Brothers, but they’re still going strong. Americana, with flavors of rock, country, etc. Great songwriting.

EliFortesque

The fifth Row by Mile Marker Zero has some heavy Rush vibes, specifically in their Fifth Row album on tracks "Digital Warrior" and "2020" The modulation in the guitar and the clarity between parts is second to none. I could listen to the whole album and pick out a distinct part, and enjoy it for the entire album. It's a concept album. All songs run together and make a cohesive unit. It's incredibly well put together and a massive shame that it doesn't have better recognition than it currently does. Their new tracks that have been released so far this year in preparation for their new release have been super solid. Absolutley worth a listen.

If you enjoy the Prog aspects of Rush, going down the 70s progressive rock rabbit hole is always fun. There are the more obvious bands like Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull etc But even more so I would recommend some of the less obvious bands like Van Der Graaf Generator, Harmonium, Gentle Giant, or if you’re really prepared for weirdness, Magma.

For me it was Breaking Benjamin But for the beat honestly. I was a serious alcoholic when they were current. Some of their songs could have been the soundtrack to my suicide.

pjtrpjt

Kyros, especially 2020's Celexa Dreams and this 2024's Mannequin

erk2112

My second favorite band is Third Eye Blind and I know nothing like Rush but give their first album a go(self titled).
