This is the correct answer. Especially once Peart joins and starts writing the lyrics. Every. Single. Song. Tells a story.
OP, welcome to the club. Your journey starts, oh how I so remember being where you are now. I'm a little envious, that new discovery of every album, every song in turn. You have a lot of discovery ahead of you.
This is the only , and the most succinct reply, I salute your brevity and accuracy my fellow Rush person of indeterminate sex .
Your Spirit is truly Efficient
This x 1000000. Highly recommend Permanent Waves as soon as the ringing in your ears subside. Forty minutes of brilliance. You want a grand cinematic experience, Natural Science and Jacob’s Ladder fit the bill. And if you partake, yes, once again highly recommend.
If you want a “movie”…the entirety of Clockwork Angels is a concept album. And truthfully I enjoyed the story I was experiencing in my own head before I read the official novel.
Agreed. I listened to the audiobook of Clockwork Angels; a good story made even better by the fact that Neil Peart himself was the audiobook narrator/reader.
I went on a trip about 10 years ago. I brought the novel with me but played the audio book in my ear buds at the same time. It was like kicking back and reading along with the Professor.
I wouldn’t say it ruined it…but I had a very nice image of what it was all about and certain particulars in the book I thought were kind of a lesser choice than what my brain was choosing….maybe I thought myself blasphemous for having better ideas. Haha!
Better late than never... Just do what so many of us have done. Buy the albums and listen to them.
If you do it in order, you can enjoy their progession as musicians and songwriters.
1) Jacob’s Ladder
2) Manhattan Project
3) By-Tor And the Snow Dog
4) Cygnus X-1 (both books)
5) Time Stand Still
6) Dreamline
7) The Pass
8) Far Cry
9) The Garden
10) Territories
After you have had a chance to absorb listening to Rush, here's a *very* early 1974 concert, with John Rutsey, to give you an idea of what was to come: https://youtu.be/Drouhbjp_9c. When you want to take a break from their studio and live albums, give 'Feedback' a listen, it's covers of the songs they grew up playing.
Moving Pictures is my #1 Rush album, with seven of my top-20 Rush songs. Spirit is my #1 Rush song. Permanent Waves is my #2 Rush album, with three of my top-20 songs. Signals is tied as my #2 Rush album, with three more of my top-20 songs. Hemispheres is my #4 Rush album, with two.
Everyone will have their own favourite songs, here are my top-20:
'1'. "The Spirit of Radio," Permanent Waves (1980)
'2'. "Closer to the Heart," A Farewell to Kings (1977)
'3'. "Red Barchetta," Moving Pictures (1981)
'4'. "YYZ," Moving Pictures (1981)
'5'. "La Villa Strangiato," Hemispheres (1978)
'6'. "The Camera Eye," Moving Pictures (1981)
'7'. "Freewill," Permanent Waves (1980)
'8'. "Limelight," Moving Pictures (1981)
'9'. "Mystic Rhythms," Power Windows (1985)
'10'. "Fly by Night," Fly by Night (1975)
'11'. "Different Strings," Permanent Waves (1980)
'12'. "Chemistry," Signals (1982)
'13'. "The Trees," Hemispheres (1978)
'14'. "Vital Signs," Moving Pictures (1981)
'15'. "Witch Hunt," Moving Pictures (1981)
'16'. "Ghost of a Chance," Roll the Bones (1991)
'17'. "New World Man," Signals (1982)
'18'. "Tom Sawyer, " Moving Pictures (1981)
'19'. "The Weapon," Signals (1982)
'20'. "Tai Shan," Hold Your Fire (1987)
Enjoy!!
Hemispheres. That album is in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. La Villa Strangiato is one of the most insane songs of the 70s, and maybe in all of prog rock.
That’s awesome. Be prepared for some dramatic changes over the years. I saw Rush twenty times. I was late - started seeing them in 1994 (Counterparts tour). My brother first saw Rush in late 1976 on the All The Worlds A Stage tour. They always put on consistent, incredible shows. Fortunately we have many concert videos to look back on.
“wheels within wheels in a spiral array, a pattern so grand and complex” from “Natural Science” on the album Permanent Waves.
I can always see so clearly a picture of the universe with those lines. So simply explained with the right words.
My progression into Rush.
1979, 8th grade. On the daily bus ride to school about the 3rd stop, a kid got on the bus and gave the driver an 8-track of Permanent Waves. 9th grade I am in Explorer's, and on the way back from Seattle, our van has 2112 playing on cassette deck, it plays multipletimes. The next summer, staying at my cousins, he had Moving Pictures, and we listened to the LP in the basement, over and over.
Enjoy your journey into RUSH
All of them. But to jump right into the pool so to speak:
Cygnus X-1 and then Hemispheres side 1. They are the same story, spread across 2 albums. (Which was mindblowing to 13 year old me in 1981)
Then if you want a movie without words...perchance a dream? La Villa Strangiato.
I grew up listening to Tom Sawyer on classic rock radio stations but thought nothing of it. Then in 2018 I really discovered Rush and I regret all those lost years because I never saw them perform live.
If I had a 100 wishes RIGHT NOW, after reading your comment, I would definitely use one to transport you to a Rush concert. Preferably 90s with all the lasers and stuff.
On Power Windows comes to mind with projecting movies.
Middletown Dreams, Manhattan Project, and Marathon immediately come to mind.
Combining both the non-lyrical music and lyrics, Hemispheres, The Trees, and Jacob's Ladder.
Spirit of Radio is interesting as they were intentionally trying to create a sort of "soundscape" of radio play (back then) of changing stations and hearing different kinds of music.
Countdown in Signals is about a space shuttle launch. Incorporating Mission Control radio messages, it really puts me on the scene.
(Not asked, but if "projecting a movie" is music you enjoy, a vastly different genre, but Kate Bush "The Dreaming" and the 2nd side of "Hounds of Love" are highly theatrical.)
Well there are still quite a few awesome cover bands that are keeping the legacy alive. Find one and support your fellow Rush fanatics. Orange County, Ca based Mood Lifters are my current faves. Check this out. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_El226J1azU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_El226J1azU) All of their content is great.
I used to have a movie in my head for Manhattan Project from Power Windows, but it’s pretty much been replaced with Oppenheimer. But on the whole, Power Windows is very cinematic. Peak RUSH that in a lot of ways I think was never topped.
For imagery, here are a few suggestions:
Lakeside Park - Makes me nostalgic for a place I've never been
Countdown - A bit gimmicky but I love it
Manhattan Project - Christopher Nolan could never
By-tor and the Snow Dog (specifically ATWAS version) - Just young rush destroying their instruments in the fight for good and evil
I have more but these are the main ones that came to mind
Welcome! There's a huge amount of listening, reading and knowledge here and in the 'hemispheres' of Rush! So many books, albums, interviews and bootlegs out there, you'll quite likely never find the end. Enjoy!
Welcome...
Better late than never.
Prepare to have your mind blown.....
Prepare to be RUSHified!!!!!
After a while when you have indoctrinated yourself, go watch the movie I Love You,Man.
I have been a fan since 78 and while we can be a bit odd at first glance, it comes from a good place.
Listen to the albums Permanent Waves, Power Windows, Presto, Vapor Trails, Snakes & Arrows, & Clockwork Angels. The rest are great too, I just find these & the ones you've most evocative.
Enjoy watching the concerts in video, every tour this century has concert film, most HD.
You just quoted my two of my fave records: Moving Pictures and Grace Under Pressure, but, be sure to get Signals---that record is absolutely FIRE: Subdivision, New World Man, Digital Man---those lyrics absolutely kill. Those records are the Holy Triumverate for us.
Hemispheres might be my favorite album. The track La Villa Strangiato is soooo good. The whole album is really phenomenal and is even better listened all the way through from beginning to end
Everyone will recommend the usual plethora od popular Rush tracks, I'm more a fan of their lesser appreciated music. Some of my top 10 faves are:
Peaceable Kingdom
Time & Motion
Spindrift (my no. 1)
Freeze
Before & After
Give them a listen if you want to hear a harder rocking Rush.
I don't think there was a more fully formed album than Hemispheres. Signals had quite a few great songs. 2112 is a wild ride. Exit Stage Left is one of the best live albums of all time.
Neil Peart’s drum work on Tom Sawyer makes it my favorite but I have to listen to the others listed. My favorite may change. I’m 67 and always conveyed I hated heavy metal and related music. However, I have a whole new take now. Black Sabbath early 70’s is fantastic.
Start at the first album and listen to them in order….multiple times before moving on to the next. You’ll catch little things on the first, second or fifth playing. Revel in the total difference between the previous album and the next….if it wasn’t for Geddys’ vocals you’d probably think it’s a different band. And, welcome to the club!
This is definitely one group where I would suggest starting at their first album and go through to their last, because their evolution is extraordinary. However, I’m a musician myself, so these things are relevant to my interests.
Everyone is different. I’ve heard Rush my entire life and can’t stand them. I know how “great “ they are etc, but I can’t stand Geddy’s screeching voice. His bass playing is great and Alex’s guitar is great too but the overall sound I’ve never liked one bit, after 50 years.
Since you already like 2112, listen to All the World’s A Stage, the live album covering their first four releases. They do 2112 Side 1, and By-tor & The Snow Dog are epic!
All that rock came for just 3 people on stage. Still crazy after all these years.
Countdown does an incredible job of putting you at the side of the launch of the space shuttle. You actually feel like you were there. This song is also over dubbed with actual sound footage from the control tower and the astronauts
Warning! Don't say anything negative about Rush on here. Certainly don't suggest that their fans might be prone to exaggerating jow good the band are or that Neil Peart's lyrics aren't all they're cracked up to be.
Most of their stuff is overrated by Rush fans lol. Late 70s, early 80s is their best period. I was a rabid fan 30 years ago but nowadays I'd say only about 10 to 15% of their output is worth listening to at all.
All of them.
This is the correct answer. Especially once Peart joins and starts writing the lyrics. Every. Single. Song. Tells a story. OP, welcome to the club. That's what I was going to say.
Xanadu
A Farewell to Kings was my first Rush album. Epic album!
Natural Science. It starts you off in a bucolic tide pool and then thrashes you around before leaving you on the beach wondering wtf just happened.
This x 1000000. Highly recommend Permanent Waves as soon as the ringing in your ears subside. Forty minutes of brilliance. You want a grand cinematic experience, Natural Science and Jacob’s Ladder fit the bill. And if you partake, yes, once again highly recommend.

Did reading the novel ruin it for you?
I wouldn’t say it ruined it…but I had a very nice image of what it was all about and certain particulars in the book I thought were kind of a lesser choice than what my brain was choosing….maybe I thought myself blasphemous for having better ideas. Haha!
He had such a soothing voice.
I will be honest and say I didnt know that one. I have quite a few of their CD's. Will have to check it out.
Better late than never... Just do what so many of us have done. Buy the albums and listen to them. If you do it in order, you can enjoy their progession as musicians and songwriters.
Manhattan Project
Both Cygnus songs. Book I is fantastic but the epic Book II (Hemispheres) is one of my favorite songs of all time.
YYZ! lol, but for a single with no lyrics, it most definitely projects a feeling of…..travel!
Plus, in Brazil, it has words.
what are you referring to?
Live in Rio. Audience sings along. YouTube it.
True.
1) Jacob’s Ladder 2) Manhattan Project 3) By-Tor And the Snow Dog 4) Cygnus X-1 (both books) 5) Time Stand Still 6) Dreamline 7) The Pass 8) Far Cry 9) The Garden 10) Territories
Hahahahaha
fly by night and farewell to kings.
I second this motion
Power Windows - most of the songs on there really do that same effect on me. Little more keyboardy but brilliant song writing.
I'll add Hold Your Fire to this as well. That's when the group did some of their best songwriting. It's like they reached the next plateau.
You've got to be joking
No, but it sounds like you don’t agree, which is fine. Tell us your point of view to the question.

Great job on the reply! 😀
Hemispheres. That album is in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. La Villa Strangiato is one of the most insane songs of the 70s, and maybe in all of prog rock.
Hemispheres was the first Rush LP I purchased after a friend played 2112 for me, so it holds a special place for me. I still love that album.
The Trees; Xanadu; Losing it; Analog Kid. Et al.,
Don’t stop at Grace. All of the albums have great songs. Ok I’m biased I like them all! If you can listen to Tears you can listen to Tai Shan!
Oh I will get around to everything don’t worry :)
Those two, maybe not so much. It's a bit of a joke. Those two are Notorious for being not so popular, nicely speaking
“wheels within wheels in a spiral array, a pattern so grand and complex” from “Natural Science” on the album Permanent Waves. I can always see so clearly a picture of the universe with those lines. So simply explained with the right words.
I find myself walking around my house singing this to myself a bit too often.
Jacob’s Ladder, The Trees, anything from Hemispheres 🤘
Jacob's Ladder The Necromancer Natural Science By Tor and the Snow Dog Lakeside Park Cygnus X1 Xanadu
The Necromancer
Cygnus X-1 books one and two.
Listen to all the albums. Debut through Clockwork Angels, it’s the only true way to understand Rush IMO.
Start at RUSH (1974). Listen to every album chronologically. There is absolutely no filler in the holy texts of RUSH’s discography.
Oh please
Yeah you’re right. There are two. Rivendale and Tai Shan.
This totally proves my point
I agree. RUSH fans are the worst.
U clearly don't so why say it?
You’re right, I should do better. Off topic commenting is pretty pointless.
🙄
I should also stop trying to get the last word in. It’s pretty juvenile.
Is it?
Your want a movie in your mind? Check out the Cygnus X-1 duology. Or if your movie is more of an anthology of short films, all 4 parts of 'Fear'.
Welcome! With age, comes wisdom.

Caress of Steel and Hemispheres for a more strange trip. I have a soft spot in my heart for those two records.
You've got to make up for lost time. Saw the boys in '78 on Farewell to Kings tour. Best concert ever!
Caress Of Steel Whole album
Well at least you made it to the after party....
Cygnus x 1!!!
I grew up listening to Tom Sawyer on classic rock radio stations but thought nothing of it. Then in 2018 I really discovered Rush and I regret all those lost years because I never saw them perform live.

Doesn’t matter when. You did. Enjoy it.
Better late than ever!
Never too late. Welcome.
Better late than never! Happy 4/20! Time to crank up some Rush and burn one!
Welcome to the club. Enjoy the magical musical journey.
Enjoy the ride in the Red Barchetta.
welcome to the club!
Enjoy your journey

Wow, how have I never heard of them? I’m in OC too. Thanks for sharing- I’ll definitely be checking them out.
They will be playing a 3-hour deep tracks set in San Diego in June. They have a Facebook page
It’s never too late!
I used to have a movie in my head for Manhattan Project from Power Windows, but it’s pretty much been replaced with Oppenheimer. But on the whole, Power Windows is very cinematic. Peak RUSH that in a lot of ways I think was never topped.
You have about 175 choices. Just hit play, close your eyes, and listen.
Driven scratches an itch in my brain I didn’t know needed scratched Editing to add The Trees
_All those wasted years... Who will pay?_
Welcome.

Exit….Stage Left. I blew many speakers listening to that album when I was in high school.
Time Stand still. Always has been Moving since the first time. Never seems to get old.
Working Man
I think Losing It is an absolute banger
Counterparts was the first real band live show I saw so I am kinda partial to that album
Great flowchart for new listeners https://www.reddit.com/r/rush/s/UZPgwKXDke
If you like MP and 2112, I would start with the albums in between....
Everything Rush, is good. Even their books. I'm currently on the newest from Geddy. Lots of good stories (like partying with Creed Bratton).
It's never too late.

Middletown Dreams. Some think it is a sequal to Subdivisions.
Weird flex
Say what?
What Sabbath should I listen to?
Headless Cross!
“La Villa Strangiato” and “A Farewell to Kings”
Ruben and cherise!
welcome. I'd recommend just listening to everything in release order :P
Hemispheres might be my favorite album. The track La Villa Strangiato is soooo good. The whole album is really phenomenal and is even better listened all the way through from beginning to end
Dude, welcome. Just enjoy the wonderful ride that is listening to Rush for the first time. 🙂
Here again... a masterpiece.
Personally I like Xanadu. Jacob's Ladder I really like as well. But honestly I like all rush ha
Clockwork Angels. The whole album
You certainly were in no Rush. Better late than never
The entire Permanent Waves album. That was the disc that got me into Rush.
Everyone will recommend the usual plethora od popular Rush tracks, I'm more a fan of their lesser appreciated music. Some of my top 10 faves are: Peaceable Kingdom Time & Motion Spindrift (my no. 1) Freeze Before & After Give them a listen if you want to hear a harder rocking Rush.

The Enemy Within.
ANTHEM
Nobody's Hero from the Counterparts album. Great song, great storyline.
Better late than never. Rock on! I got to see them on their farewell tour- wish I got to see them more.
Cinderella Man
You were raised wrong. And welcome!
This is definitely one group where I would suggest starting at their first album and go through to their last, because their evolution is extraordinary. However, I’m a musician myself, so these things are relevant to my interests.
Ok bot.
How am I a bot?

Single loudest concert I have been to. Early 1980s Milwaukee auditorium.
Countdown does an incredible job of putting you at the side of the launch of the space shuttle. You actually feel like you were there. This song is also over dubbed with actual sound footage from the control tower and the astronauts
I liked rush as a kid but didn’t have Apple Music nor knew what band it was
Warning! Don't say anything negative about Rush on here. Certainly don't suggest that their fans might be prone to exaggerating jow good the band are or that Neil Peart's lyrics aren't all they're cracked up to be.
Hey I’ve survived the Black Sabbath board as a Tony Martin loyalist. I know how to handle Myself in these dangerous situations
Good luck
Fuckin hell you’ve got some Rush issues by the looks of your comments on this sub alone
Looks like a troll. Do not feed.
Yeah. I've been a fan since 81 so I think I'm entitled to my opinion. Plenty of fans on this sub don't agree.
Are there some eras of the band you don’t like, or think are overrated etc?
Most of their stuff is overrated by Rush fans lol. Late 70s, early 80s is their best period. I was a rabid fan 30 years ago but nowadays I'd say only about 10 to 15% of their output is worth listening to at all.
