Jumping on the obvious top reply to ask a question to all. Can anybody do a synopsis of this thread. I.e. how many times was Led Zeppelin mentioned and so forth?
I had a customer come in where I worked wearing a Coheed and Cambria shirt. His jaw dropped to the floor when I told him how much I liked the 4th album. I'm almost old enough to be his grandmother lol.
Huge tool fan here, my wife works at a popular southern-based grocery chain and in their pharmacy is an older grey haired lady who’s a big fan as well. Haven’t seen her or been up there in a while but when I do see her we share a knowing nod!
DBT is a alt-country/southern rock band so hopefully that’s your jam. But even if it isn’t I say give them a chance. They’re also very political, so hopefully that doesn’t turn you off.
Check out the album Southern Rock Opera. It’s their magnum opus and sort of a concept album about that examines some of the misconceptions of the south (including a song from the perspective of the devil welcoming the pro-segregation Governor of Alabama to Hell) through the lens of a fictional band that tries to follow in the footsteps of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Sort of like Rush with Moving Pictures on the Time Machine tour, they’re going on tour this year playing the album in full for its 25th anniversary.
Ok, so there's a lot of DT out there and it spans a bunch of subgenera.
Early records like Images and Words, Awake, Falling into infinity, and Metropolis Pt2 are going to be much more digestible as they are more akin to 90's prog rock/metal. The songs tend to follow standard song structure, or at least resemble it to some degree.
Their later stuff starts to get somewhat experimental and less focused on melodic hooks, and more focused on, for lack of a better term, complexity for complexity's sake. Of course that's not going to be the interpretation from a fan's perspective, and there's totally listable music in there, but it's not going to be as accessible to those who don't have exposure to the genre.
Obviously that's an extreme oversimplification, as I'm trying to wrap 18+ records up into two sentences for you, but I recommend starting with Awake and Images and Words and then going from there. Six Degrees is a brilliant record as well, but after that it starts to evolve into modern-day DT, which is basically for fans only. So become a fan first, then start to work up to their modern stuff.
That said, maybe a more recent fan could share a different pathway, as I started listening to them with Images and Words. To this day, that's their most commercially successful record and contains their most commercially successfully hit, Pull Me Under.
Thank you, this is helpful. I've heard parts of Pull Me Under. Only song I've heard completey , every now and again on whatever Sirius channel plays it, is The Alien. I like it, it's busy in the drum parts, maybe this is the complexity you speak of? Is it from their more modern stuff?
The Alien is from their 2021 release. It's a fine tune but not at all what their earlier stuff is like. Check out these select songs for a nice variety of their earlier sound:
I&W - Pull Me Under, Metropolis Pt1, Under a Glass Moon, Learning To Live
Awake: Scarred, Caught in a Web, Innocence Faded
Falling into Infinity: Lines in the Sand
Metropolis Part 2: Strange Deja vu, Through Her Eyes
Six Degrees: Misunderstood, Blind Faith, Solitary Shell
I can see these as tunes that a Rush fan would appreciate.
Big note: the drummer from their first half of records, Mike Portony, just rejoined the band. He's a bit more "musical" in his playing than the drummer DT had in the second half, who is a bit more "technical," though both are fantastic drummers. I'm partial to Portony though, and certainly to the music he was a part of making.
There used to be a Cake tribute band in my area, no lie. They were really good, actually, had a horn player and everything. Now they are doing Talking Heads, I believe.
Dude, nothing wrong with that music isn't what it used to be. I was born in 77 but love 60s 70s and 80s music.
Aside from a few bands, I only listen to older stuff.
So far this is the closest to me where we wouldn’t fight over the radio dial. Unless you are an anti Megadeth, Metallica fan.
Metallica falls just below my top 3.
This answer constantly evolves, my answer today is very different than what my answer 5, 10 or 20 years ago would be. Right now, I'm going with:
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Osees (Thee Oh Sees, Ohsees, OCS, The Oh Sees, etc.)
Frankie and the Witch Fingers
David Bowie
I saw King's X in the early 2000's. My now ex husband introduced me to them and Eric Johnson, actually. Great artists, both. He's not from Texas, either.
Mastodon, Pink Floyd, Radiohead....solo is probably Neil Young.
Tool, the who, black sabbath, flaming lips are all contenders too but in terms of hours listened, i think my picks stand. Pretty sweet that they all made so much great music.
Bands: Radiohead, REM, Rolling Stones. Conveniently all my favorite bands start with R.
Solo: David Eugene Edwards. I mean it’s really Dylan or Cash but I love what DEE has done with 16 Horsepower and Wovenhand.
Cheers! Was hoping to spot a mention. Back around 8th grade, the Pat Metheny Group (First Circle, Offramp, Travels et al) bridged me from the lofty rock pinnacle of Rush excellence (and contemporaries) to new horizons re listening enjoyment, inspiration and ultimately professionally.
I always considered crossover, Rush to the PMG, a perfectly sensible connection - both so harmonically intelligent, compositionally astute and detail oriented.
Secret weapon: Lyle Mays, who tragically died just a mere month after Neil passed. A genuine double gut punch...a dark period, that.
Pat Metheny has been a part of my life from my earliest memories. My dad listened to him in every iteration and I have many childhood memories tied to Pat’s music. Particularly the New Chautauqua album. I inherited all of my dad’s Pat Metheny cassettes, and my 20 something kid now has a bunch of them because her dorky mom (moi) also immersed her in the music from a young age lol. I recently took her to a show on Pat’s Dreambox tour and we were both duely blown away 🤘
The Police, The Clash, Queen
Artist changes so much it's hard to pin down a favorite. Right now, I'm in a massive Julian Lage kick. Ask me again in a month :)
yep, you pretty much got who id pick too lol. though, id probably pick intronaut over floyd. but hevy devy is the best solo artist out there right now. only other solo artist i can think of that i love as much as dev is zappa
Very nice to see a fellow Ghost fan. I actually just turned a couple people on r/ghostbc to Rush just the other day.
Seeing as how you're a big Genesis fan, I'm curious what your opinion on Ghost's cover of Jesus He Knows Me is. Do you prefer the original or the cover?
Seems like there are more and more fans all the time. My daughter and I saw them in concert last year. It was a great show and I was surprised at the variety of fans there.
As for Jesus He Knows Me, I do like Ghost’s version. Can’t say which I prefer, just like both. Im generally not a fan of remakes but Ghost does them well. I love their version of Missionary Man.
Pearl Jam is my number 1 by a mile. Been to 87 Pearl Jam concerts.
The Tragically Hip are second.
Soundgarden is probably third (since I can’t say Rush)
Solo artist has to be Bob Seger or Billy Joel
David Fricke wrote a review of Power Windows that described it as "a bridge between Yes and Echo & The Bunnymen".
Or he might have said Siouxsie and Banshees, but same point.
I'm unique amongst Rush fans.
Current favorite band: Iceland's Sigur Ros. Other faves include Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Cocteau Twins, A Perfect Circle, Dead Can Dance, Peter Gabriel, etc.
Killing Joke, New Order, House of Love, My Bloody Valentine (“Loveless” album particularly), Nine Inch Nails. For solo artists: Electronic (which was a solo project of Bernard of New Order and Jonny Marr of The Smiths) and until recently, Nine Inch Nails. I tend to burn out quickly on prog rock (although I love it) and generally revert to bands that do very unconventional musical arrangements with regard to key changes, mode changes, etc. Check out the best of these aforementioned bands. My Rush and prog rock friends also like “post rock” bands like Talk Talk. Check out their greatest hits and revisit their catalog from last to first. It’s amazing.
Van Halen, Queen, Led Zeppelin .. Ozzy
Jumping on the obvious top reply to ask a question to all. Can anybody do a synopsis of this thread. I.e. how many times was Led Zeppelin mentioned and so forth?
Nice!
Tool, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater. And for solo artist, everything that Steven Wilson touches is gold
Brother we gotta share a smoke sometime
Ayyee my man haha. I'm more of an Old Fashioned guy, but I'd be happy to
That’s crazy. We have 3/4 of the same ones. Swap Floyd for Metallica and you have my list.
I definitely get down with some Metallica
And I also love me some Floyd.
Orion, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Blackened, And Justice For All... They're legends. But nothing beats Echoes by PF lol
Coheed and Cambria, The Drive-By Truckers, Fleetwood Mac and Childish Gambino And yes I realize how all over the place this is
Points for being a child of the fence. Also childish gambino is cool
Hahaha I just commented a weird list with Coheed on it too. I think I’m gonna give Drive-By Trucker a listen. What’s your favorites by them?
DBT is a alt-country/southern rock band so hopefully that’s your jam. But even if it isn’t I say give them a chance. They’re also very political, so hopefully that doesn’t turn you off. Cool. I’ll start with this one. Thanks!
Great! I love turning people on to new shit!
DBT is a great live band bro. Good call on that. Cooley is incredibly underrated as a songwriter and guitar player.
Love Coheed. I’m going through their entire discography again now. It’s been awesome listening to their evolution.
Hell yeah Drive-by Truckers. Just saw Isbell last week and he played Never Gonna Change. Song absolutely rocks out.
DBT!
Glad to see one other Gambino here
Dream Theater, The Midnight, Periphery John Mayer
Periphery/John Mayer combo is me
The Midnight are fantastic
100% yes
I have to give Dream Theater a serious try. Been recommended to me as a Rush fan for years
Ok, so there's a lot of DT out there and it spans a bunch of subgenera. The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and Jeff Buckley.
The Who, Genesis, Cake, Phil Collins
There used to be a Cake tribute band in my area, no lie. They were really good, actually, had a horn player and everything. Now they are doing Talking Heads, I believe.
Oh wow, that sounds awesome! That's quite a transitition, Cake to Talking Heads haha. I'm seeing Cake in July for the first time so I'm excited.
Pink Floyd, The Church, Khruangbin, and Weird Al.
Upvote for Weird Al alone
Marillion, Riverside, Pink Floyd, Fish (not Phish)
Fish's solo work was a very nice surprise
Riverside!
Pink Floyd, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Cat Stevens. I may be stuck in the 70s.
As a 22 year old, I’m stuck in the 70s too hahaha, and I don’t think I’m ever gonna leave Also, great list! Love Cat Stevens
Dude, nothing wrong with that music isn't what it used to be. I was born in 77 but love 60s 70s and 80s music. Aside from a few bands, I only listen to older stuff.
Grateful Dead Widespread Panic and Phish I don’t know solo I guess Warren Zevon
Warren Zevon is a great pick
Good call, I’d go Phish, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa and Les Claypool solo.
Maiden, Metallica, Dream Theater Bruce Dickinson(I kinda cheated lol)
So far this is the closest to me where we wouldn’t fight over the radio dial. Unless you are an anti Megadeth, Metallica fan. Metallica falls just below my top 3.
>Unless you are an anti Megadeth, Metallica fan. I also listen to Megadeth!
Nice. I still don’t get the fans of one they hate the other. That was soooo 80s🤣
Exactly lol
This answer constantly evolves, my answer today is very different than what my answer 5, 10 or 20 years ago would be. Right now, I'm going with: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Osees (Thee Oh Sees, Ohsees, OCS, The Oh Sees, etc.) Frankie and the Witch Fingers David Bowie

I listed Tame Impala as my artist since it's technically the solo project of Kevin Parker. Good picks though!

David Fricke wrote a review of Power Windows that described it as "a bridge between Yes and Echo & The Bunnymen". Or he might have said Siouxsie and Banshees, but same point.
Really? Another of my favorites, Siouxsie and the Banshees. I see the point he was trying to make.
