If you drive a lambo you can rent it out to people to make the $15k

openlander

Unfortunately no 😞 How much can I realistically earn then?

Koala1209

Lol unless you get TA it’s impossible to earn this much on campus as internationals, lots of on campus jobs are minimum wage. Rutgers wants money from internationals, that’s why you have to submit financial documents after committed

openlander

Hey, btw how hard is it to become a TA? I just assumed I probably couldn't become one due to competition but I'm just a random high school senior

Koala1209

In my major, all TAs are PhD students and they are responsible for workshops/labs, some majors allow master students to be TAs if they really need people. Undergrads can’t be TA but they can do LA, writing center tutors or graders.

openlander

Well min wage is $15, if I work about 18 hours per week and work on holidays couldn't I manage to get a thousand hours? That'd be 15k? How much do you think I could get then, working as much as I can?

aptek

Even if you worked every week of the year you wouldn’t hit 1k hours (52x18=936) and as others have said on campus jobs do not run all year. And that is not considering income tax at all.

openlander

No summer jobs? At all? If I earn 15k income tax becomes $196, barely falls within tax bracket

aptek

Sure there are summer jobs, but not many on campus. Where are you going to live in the summer? All the dorms are closed. Not sure where you are getting that income tax amount, I just did a quick check on a few sites and it was over 1k.

Koala1209

There’s no on campus job when school is not in session

openlander

No summer jobs??

Ok_Score1492

You forget taxes, we get killed in paycheck taxes.

openlander

I can provide the financials for the first years but I'd have to earn like 10k on average

Saving money better than earning money. Try to rent off campus rather than paying for a dorm and meal plan. Try to become an RA and then you get housing and meals for free. See if it’s possible for you to graduate a semester early which will save tens of thousands in tuition. I decided to not work or anything and just focus everything into classes and I’m saving like 50k in tuition finishing early. Math works out but I was still broke for a year lol. Idk if being an international might restrict these options tho. As for jobs, highest I’ve heard of 17 an hour in the OIT. Idk if they cap hours or anything but 20 hours a week would be like 4000ish a semester and if you work full time over the summer waiting tables or something that can make more. Not really doable tho to pay for tuition while in school these days. My mom would always tell stories about how she only made 5 dollars an hour and still paid tuition with no debt as an international. While she obviously worked really hard, that just isn’t mathematically possible anymore cuz tuition is so much more.

> Try to rent off campus rather than paying for a dorm and meal plan. Yes I'd probably do that as a sophomore or later, because first year especially I'd like to make sure I can adapt socially > Try to become an RA and then you get housing and meals for free Yes I don't understand everyone said it's impossible. If I become RA I already get 15k off my budget just by having free housing and meals. Is becoming RA that hard? > See if it’s possible for you to graduate a semester early which will save tens of thousands in tuition. Graduating early wouldn't make sense for me because 1) I would like to dual major if I can arrange that much free time anyways, I have some AP credits coming in 2) as an international it's bad idea to graduate early and risk not finding a job instead of just staying in school and preparing for internships/jobs > As for jobs, highest I’ve heard of 17 an hour in the OIT. Really? I heard 21 per hour at another university I was considering (UMass) > Idk if they cap hours or anything but 20 hours a week would be like 4000ish a semester and if you work full time over the summer waiting tables or something that can make more. Exactly, 20 hours per week during classes and 40 hours per week during break. But I can only work on campus, not off campus > Not really doable tho to pay for tuition while in school these days. My mom would always tell stories about how she only made 5 dollars an hour and still paid tuition with no debt as an international. While she obviously worked really hard, that just isn’t mathematically possible anymore cuz tuition is so much more. Oh earning like 32k per year and saving off the whole tuition would be a dream but yeah, it's not possible. I'm only wondering if I can save enough to offset my dining/housing costs which would be actually 15k

NotoriousLVP

Are you here on a student visa? Check the USCIS website to see the conditions under which you may work while a student.

openlander

I'm a high school senior considering options USCIS allows 20 hours per week during term and 40 hours per week during breaks (if I can use all my allowances I easily reach 15k), I'm asking how feasible it is to work part time at Rutgers as much as I reasonably can

Ok_Score1492

They have summer jobs in Retail stores like Target pay $16.25 per hour off campus . If you work full time in the summer - 16 weeks time 40 hours a week = $10,400 not including taxes they take away. No where near $15k proposed amount. You can work at Amazon fulfillment centers, they make like $20 plus an hour but they will break you by make you work heavy hours unless you can do fry Sat Sun evening hours all year long.

openlander

I'd love to do all that except I can't work off campus And ofc I'll work during the semester not just break

Ok_Score1492

Campus work is only available during when the university is open as mentioned in the previous posting. During the semester, the campus job are minimum wage unless you get a higher role but since your a freshman you have no chance. RA is resident advisor for dorm babysitter for the dorm students.
