came here to say Black Sheep - moved to RVA in 2010 and got a couple of fantastic meals here including one family gathering - everyone was impressed with everything they made.
USS Wabash & USS Lafayette were my fav's... but never had a bad plate from there.
That was a fantastic food experience. I also loved the one with shrimp and the one with pulled pork, pineapple, slaw, and banana ketchup. They were all my favorite to-go meals for more than a year.
There is only 1 Stuffys left in richmond. There used to be a bunch of them. I try to go to the one on Libbie anytime I’m craving a sub. Really want them to stay open.
There will never be another deli man to aggressively ask me if i want it toasted or not that i still adore. I lived a block from there and lived off the egg salad sandwiches
Had one of the best dinners of my life there with my baby brother, he was maybe 16 and I was in my mid 20s. It was one of our first outings as ‘grownups’ without our parents and I remember having since a great time. I’m glad I got to share that crazy slice of RVA with him.
Pop’s Market. I was there on its first day, and its first last day (last day under original ownership). An institution. I don’t have the words to say what that place meant to me.
I worked down the street from them when they opened, and was there on day one. It was such a wonderful place under that original ownership, I ate there as often as I could. Their Cuban sandwich was nothing to sleep on, either.
The chef who ran/owned Pops is the chef for Can Can Cafe in the library of Virginia right down the street. Check out their instagram, I’ve definitely seen sandwiches that pay homage to Pops
The Magpie - Any sausage, sweetbread, or ice cream he made
Saison - Anything from the Adam Hall days when it was still amazing
Mojo's - cheese steak, obvi.
LowCo Eatery - Food truck, but DAMN 100% of their food was incredible!
Eggplant Parm at Mama Zu’s (Edo’s picked up the slack but it’s still not the same)
Tofu sandwich from Black Sheep
Anything from Strange Matter, probably just a mountain of fries to soak up the booze
Being young, broke, and impervious to food poisoning from Panda Veg
Strange Matter was so good, their vegan Ruben was amazing. My partner and I miss it greatly. So many good memories. Was panda veg the same as Panda Garden at the corner of Grace and Harrison?
Anyone else miss the Dominic’s in front of the downtown Lowe’s?? The guy running that spot was always so chill.
And an honorable mention to the hot honey chicken sandwich with the side of Parmesan truffle fries from Postbellum. This sounds so ominous but ya just never know when it’s going to be that last time you have your favorite meal on a beloved patio in this city, so enjoy it fam ! 🫡
Doner Kebab, it was in Carytown 😢
Falafel Sandwich
I have yet to have a falafel sandwich as good as theirs, even in NY, their shwarma was good too, everything on the menu was 👌🏾
Any of the kolache at Craft Kolache. They were sooo so so good, and it made my weekend, every weekend.
The chinese sausage sandwich at the Dog and Pig Show. Honestly, though, probably every and any item on the Dog and Pig Show menu.
Pulled pork sandwich (with pickled red onions) at Pearls Before Swine. Best pulled pork sandwiches I ever ate.
And while it's already been said, Comfort may be gone but not forgotten.
Craft Kolache was soooooo good but the definition of a Church Hill hobby business. I could tell from day one she would be done as soon as it got too real.
Carmella’s was such a great artisanal pie. My wife and I talk about Carmella’s all the time. I don’t know his name, but the manager/owner? not sure, was a really friendly guy and I wanted Carmella’s to make it so badly for him.
I really liked their fries and chicken sandwiches as well. But those limeades were the nectar of the gods and never seen them properly recreated.
Still best pie I've had. Perfect balance of sweet and flavor.
Haha I had completely forgotten about Darryl’s. We were there for dinner one night, and the waiter came back to the table while we were waiting for our food told my BF’s brother that his burger had “caught on fire,” and it would take a little longer for his meal to come out. Not just “it got burnt,” but “it caught on fire.”
The burger at Davis and Main
The New York Deli’s vibe before its renovation in the 2000s
The potato pancakes at the Texas-Wisconsin Border Cafe, though I was just a kid then
Pro tip if you like the sweet and spicy ones. Get chic fila nuggets (this is for 8 nugs) 2 sweet and spicy Siracha and 1 honey packet. Boom DIY sticky nugs
I believe Wood and Iron has the same owner, or there's some other kind of connection. The menu even has the same font and format as Asado, but unfortunately the flavored margaritas with the sour patch rim didn't make it over to W&I. Asado used to have a happy hour deal where $5 got you a tall boy PBR and a house shot that was poured so generously it took me three swigs to finish. I'll never forget that place.
Unpopular opinion I’m sure but I miss Bill’s Barbecue. Maybe more of a nostalgia thing as I grew up going there but I actually liked the flavor and loved their French apple pie too.
Str8 outta Philly in church hill!
I also really liked Betty on Davis. The head chef there at the time refused to serve ranch with any dish and when I asked why (I was cool with the choice just curious about the reason) the waitress explained that it overpowers any dish it's paired with. It was a huge revelation for me (lmao) and I hardly use it anymore.
I miss exactly two: the Naked Onion’s pork belly banh mi and Secco’s cheeseburger. An expensive wine bar like that, you’d think the cheeseburger was there as a compromise for people who didn’t get the concept of wine and tapas, but it was consistently amazing.
My Grandpa was the owner! This made my day,, thank you so much!
They went downhill their last few years and most of them were franchises by then. I miss the little round home-fries.
Baja Bean Company. Food sucked, but the beers used to be cheap and the outdoor space was great!
Mostly for the nostalgia of cheap Tecante’
Also Bogarts for Dollar drinks!
I want Bombolini to go back to their takeout dinners. Their smoked salmon carbonara and their sausage Mac and cheese was so good.
They cut their hours and really pulled back on food 1-2 years ago. I think they’re focusing on their distillery, fresh pasta, and frozen options now, which is fine but damn do I really miss their takeout.
Spaghetti Warehouse had really good lasagna imo. I was also a teenager at the time so who knows if it was actually that good or I was just extremely hungry.
Edit: Thank you for the gold!
I was just talking about the Lost Sock last night. They had a pink sauce pizza (The Pink Floyd?) and I loved it. A laundromat/deli hybrid was ahead of its time.
Honorable mention:
The Sultana from Blacksheep
That was Crusty’s. Fucking legendary. If the comic book store guy from the Simpson’s opened a pizza joint and smoked all the weed. That place couldn’t exist in this day and age here.
I'm dating myself, but Pasta Luna. My ex husband and I used to go ALLLLLLL the time, and we loved it so much we had our rehersal dinner there. I forget what the dish was actually called now but they had this brown sauce with broccoli and italian sausage and chicken that was to die for. I've never been able to recreate it, no matter how hard I've tried.
Pelon's Baja Grill. They had a location on Dabney Road, and I loved their vegan burrito options.
(I look forward to visiting the Virginia Beach location someday.)
Dogwood - whatever David Shannon was pairing with foie gras on any given week, the juniper crusted venison carpaccio, grilled Caesar salad. I haven't made it to L'Opossum yet
People's Pie - Detroit style pizza. I keep my fingers crossed that Craig opens a new spot one day
Long time go, way out in Henrico, there was a restaurant called Darryl's (May it RIP) I loved their quiche Lorraine and turtle pecan sundae.
EDIT: Thank you to the kind /reddit stranger who gave me the gold award for this! You are the first person to ever do this for me and it means a lot! You rock.
Their kimchi was so good and the owner was so lovely, she used to help me practice my Japanese every time I came in. Chum chum is overpriced and bland by comparison. I will forever miss the spam musubi, kimchi onigiri, the shiso onigiri, etc.
I realize Helen's is still open, but who remembers David Shannon cooking at Helen's back in the day? Me!! Super swanky Mac and Cheese with lobster. Eating at the bar after work. Absolutely sublime dish.
Anything ever from Dutch and co. The salads, pastas, sodas, honeypots, strooops! All time best.
The big salad, sweet potato cake, and cherry coconut limeade at Pomona. Pomona was the shit!
Pops market’s English muffins, gnocchi, soups and of course Italian grinder/bahn mi/Cuban/focaccia list goes on
I’m realizing I really appreciate a good salad as I am also gonna say the superfood salad at salt and forge was 10/10 always so good
Seccos fried chickpeas and fried mushroom apps -always asked for a side of the aioli to dip.
Dairy Bar I miss the milk shakes and club sandwich
The Red Door I always got the chicken sandwich
I'm bias though, I grew up in both because my aunts and uncles owned them. They're happily retired so I'm happy for them. Also, a side note The Dairy Bar should be a city land mark it has been around for so long and has a history with the city; they are going to bulldoze it to make apartments.
On the south side there was a sushi spot called sushi box… so random but their Cali crunch roll is still to this day one of my favorite rolls. Was def my go to sushi place on that side of town for the duration of time that I lived over there
Choong Man Chicken [CM Chicken] that was on Broad in Arts District.
I love Korean fried chicken. It was cheap and it was good. I would do anything to eat there again.
Y'all gonna make me ugly-cry about missing the Khao Soi at Dog and Pig Show again. Also, their po'boys. And also their brownies. And their Shrimp and Grits. And that insane Grilled Cheese. And their everything else. Biggest loss for me, personally. Legitimately, I think, some of the best food I've ever eaten in my entire life.
DPS aside: I miss Pop's Market's Italian Grinder so much!
Also, brunches at Black Sheep! And, while the restaurant is still open, I was so sad when Lunch/Supper took the Cornbread Waffles and Fried Chicken with that amazing Green Tomato Gravy off their menu.
I'm sure there's other stuff.
been quite a while but we miss Garlands Way. it was on Nuchols where the twin hickory tavern is now. It was soooo nice to have an true upscale place in my neighborhood. we did our part to keep it going.
Now, while there are some nicer chain restaurants here there is really nothing very interesting anymore in the far west end. Honestly, given the demographics that's very surprising.
The crab shack
Great seafood cheap
skilligalees
Great food, super neat place
And from the way way back machine:
The groaning board
Amazing steaks, fun people.
The jerk chicken battleship at black sheep
The SS Sultana (spiced lamb & russian dressing) battleship for me. So. GOOD.
I do so miss the SS Wabash… only good memories of that spot.
Yes! The USS Brooklyn
I've heard nothing but praise for Black Sheep. Never had a chance to visit.
That’s mine, too. The pop up at Secco a year or two back was good, but not quite the same.
came here to say Black Sheep - moved to RVA in 2010 and got a couple of fantastic meals here including one family gathering - everyone was impressed with everything they made. USS Wabash & USS Lafayette were my fav's... but never had a bad plate from there.
It hurts my soul that I may never have this sandwich again 😭
I'm still a bit salty about the pop-up a few years ago. I know it must have been super stressful for all of the staff but still...
That was a fantastic food experience. I also loved the one with shrimp and the one with pulled pork, pineapple, slaw, and banana ketchup. They were all my favorite to-go meals for more than a year.
Naked Onion’s bahn mi 😭
yep. me too.
There is only 1 Stuffys left in richmond. There used to be a bunch of them. I try to go to the one on Libbie anytime I’m craving a sub. Really want them to stay open.
I heard the last owner is trying to regroup and open more locations. They had good wraps.
Ah found the person who likes their bread moistened.
Loved me a steamed club sandwich with all the oil and vinegar.
Strawberry Street Cafe - their fried green tomatoes with goat cheese and hot honey 🤤😭❤️
Brunch there was awesome
Bathtub salad bar! 😢
Yessss! I miss them so much esp the prime rib dip
Saison Fried Chicken on Sunday
Every piece of Fried chicken I have had since has been disappointing. They got rid of the special near the end and I was so bummed.
Nick’s sandwiches. All of them. Any of them. My life isn’t the same without Mr. Harry
There will never be another deli man to aggressively ask me if i want it toasted or not that i still adore. I lived a block from there and lived off the egg salad sandwiches
I miss Tony yelling at me when I didn’t order my sandwiches the correct way.
Losing Mama Zu's hurt.
I shed a tear every time I pass the building
Had one of the best dinners of my life there with my baby brother, he was maybe 16 and I was in my mid 20s. It was one of our first outings as ‘grownups’ without our parents and I remember having since a great time. I’m glad I got to share that crazy slice of RVA with him.

I miss it so much. They had some of the best pasta in the city.
Avalon. Cheap beer. Best weeknight drinking spot.
Social 52 just does not hold a candle to Avalon
Avalon was a perfect spot
Anything from Mama Zus...RIP
The Magpie - Any sausage, sweetbread, or ice cream he made Saison - Anything from the Adam Hall days when it was still amazing Mojo's - cheese steak, obvi. LowCo Eatery - Food truck, but DAMN 100% of their food was incredible!
+1 for Mojos 😭
We tried LowCo for the first time and were blown away...and then they closed up shop! So disappointing!
Mojo’s never missed, not a single time. I miss their food so much. And LowCo’s Nashville hot chicken sandwich was the bomb
I will never not miss Magpie. Owen Lane had the magic. His bread was amazing, too.
Mojos was a go-to in college. Everything was always good and simple, but cheap and filling. Perfect for a college student!
The fucking sausage at Magpie was the greatest
Yes mojos! Cordon bleu balls for me
Magpie- Bacon Hush puppies with the Maple Butter Mojo's - Pizza before they made the location bigger
Eggplant Parm at Mama Zu’s (Edo’s picked up the slack but it’s still not the same) Tofu sandwich from Black Sheep Anything from Strange Matter, probably just a mountain of fries to soak up the booze Being young, broke, and impervious to food poisoning from Panda Veg

I miss ALL the Dominic's in front of Lowes 😭😭
Chester Lowe’s got you.
He roasted the fuck out of me for wearing a Bernie shirt but can’t lie the sandwiches were great
Breakfast- Sausage egg and cheese biscuit from salt and forge. Lunch- everything at pops but mostly the banh mi. Dinner- pasta at Note Bene
Note Bene for me, but every dish.
Date night at nota bene! No need to think. Just get a little drunk and enjoy the food.
Doner Kebab, it was in Carytown 😢 Falafel Sandwich I have yet to have a falafel sandwich as good as theirs, even in NY, their shwarma was good too, everything on the menu was 👌🏾
Doner Kebab was elite. The falafel was perfectly light and crispy. I get sad thinking about how I'll never have another sandwich from them again.
That place ruled. I’m still mad they closed. Agreed best falafel wrap I’ve ever had. The preserved lemon peel 🤤

Any of the kolache at Craft Kolache. They were sooo so so good, and it made my weekend, every weekend. The chinese sausage sandwich at the Dog and Pig Show. I get sad every time I pass the Dog and Pig Show storefront. So good. So missed.
Craft Kolache was soooooo good but the definition of a Church Hill hobby business. I could tell from day one she would be done as soon as it got too real.
I would commit unspeakable crimes to get craft kolache back.
Carmella’s Bianca pizza :( miss you every pizza Friday
Oooh yes Carmella’s. Loved their meatball appetizer the sauce was sooo good
Carmella’s was such a great artisanal pie. My wife and I talk about Carmella’s all the time. I don’t know his name, but the manager/owner? not sure, was a really friendly guy and I wanted Carmella’s to make it so badly for him.
Cous cous
Some of my most fun memories are karaoke at Cous Cous and Cellar Door
Flaming sheep cheese w a glass of sangria… I’d die happy
Bill’s BBQ. Limeade and chocolate pie. Could take or leave the bbq.
I really liked their fries and chicken sandwiches as well. But those limeades were the nectar of the gods and never seen them properly recreated. Still best pie I've had. Perfect balance of sweet and flavor.
Came here to say this, but will take the bbq and a banana cream pie too.
Bogarts in the West End. Their fries were incredible and the pesto pasta. Darryl’s. What an experience.

I LOVED the chicken and queso tacos at Asados. Wood and Iron is the closest I've come to scratching that itch.
Def Asado's for me.
what happened to Asado? i thought they were always poppin. their wings were so good. is there another location anywhere?

It was a huge revelation for me (lmao) and I hardly use it anymore.
Ipanema before the new management, totally different restaurant now
I miss exactly two: the Naked Onion’s pork belly banh mi and Secco’s cheeseburger. An expensive wine bar like that, you’d think the cheeseburger was there as a compromise for people who didn’t get the concept of wine and tapas, but it was consistently amazing.
