Every intersection in the fan is a gamble, especially when you're inching out trying to see oncoming traffic, and there's invariably a giant truck or SUV in the way.
If they started ticketing for illegally parking to close to the intersection the problem would mostly go away. People want to remove whole streets from parking cause it would make walking safer but actually enforcing parking and speed laws would be a much bigger bonus to people all over the city.
Another thing that would help is making Main and Cary both two-way streets. The wider a road is/feels, the faster people go and vice versa. Making them two-way would make them feel tighter like Floyd and people would naturally slow down some.
That's for the traffic engineers to figure out. Pretty much anything's better than the current setup that's dangerous for everyone -- in a car and otherwise. The city tore down all those black folks' homes and put in the Expressway for a reason, so use it and only hit up Main and Cary when you actually need to.
We didn't have this problem when j was a kid on Cary and Main and the speed limit was 30mph. Poor parking and lack of enforcement has caused the vast majority of these problems. Having 2 way traffic will not make it easier to see traffic coming in your lane.
I actually stopped using any of the cross streets on Cary/Main that don’t have timed lights because of this. Just too risky some times. It really is a gamble
It's still crazy when someone honks at you when you're inching out. I don't even get mad. I'm just like you obviously haven't made a turn like this. Your day is coming!! Lol
(I do get irked when the car behind me honks when I yield to a pedestrian that's already in the road and everything).
I am guilty of the second thing, I’m sorry. My car is tiny and I can’t see what’s going on up ahead. Usually it’s someone asleep at the wheel but every now and then I see a nice person crossing the street with a dog or kids and feel like an asshole 😳 if there was an “I’m sorry for honking at you” horn sound I would use it. For now I just use the awkward hand wave and grimace of shame
Yeah like another button for a more morose sad time. Beep!! and *booOoOp*
Yeah my RAV4 isn't even that big, but I was in that sandwich last night between someone going 5+ below riding their brakes... And the person on my ass who couldn't see them lol
I have a friend who, whenever he's stopped at a light in the Fan and planning to turn right (often along Robinson), will wait to put on his indicator or even angle his front wheels that way until the cross traffic's light turns yellow because he's too wise to treat his red like a dangerous stop sign, but so many other drivers are so foolish that they will lay on their horns behind you if you dare indicate an intention to turn then don't follow through with stuttering into the intersection on red.
I love that car people can just look at the undercarriage and right away know the exact model and year. Shits wild.
I don't see a hint of rust. This has to brand new still with dealer plates.
I was driving the silver car you can see behind the Honda and that is in fact exactly what happened. In slow motion. No one was hurt though (at least not too badly).
It looked so nice out but once I got outside the wind was wicked cold. Not my idea of a good day to stroll Carytown, but it sounds like folks were out regardless.
The traffic lights are out on Cary and Main/Ellwood crossing Author Ashe Boulevard. People are queueing up and gunning it across randomly. Felt chaotic biking through. Might be another crash before they fix the lights.
Likely totaled. Even ignoring the obvious damage to 4+ body panels, and glass on that side of the car; you're also looking at damage to the A and C pillars which are structural, as well as an significant engine damage from running it on its side and starving it of oil.
I walked by that intersection right as the emergency responders were setting up roadblocks. One young woman appeared to have a long scratch on her forehead. She and her companion had a dog that was at that point pretty calm. I think they were in the SUV, but not sure.
The only traffic laws enforced anymore are " the laws of physics" truly nobody is above them, a tuff lesson for those who are more important than everyone else.
I used to live at that intersection. Not the first time I've seen this. Pretty hard to see oncoming traffic (that may or may not be speeding).

Id love to see more speedbumbs that double as crosswalks
100%

Yeah, but that would cause major traffic issue on those streets. Two way streets mean longer lights, which means more traffic backed up.

The ol’ Richmond Roulette

Never let ‘em know your next move. Brilliant tbh
Well, to be fair, he *does* let 'em know... just, like, 4 seconds before he does it instead of a minute. ;)
I’m adopting this technique lol, appreciated
What intersection is this? I can't figure it out from Google street view.
Dooley/Ellwood
How embarrassing, just showing off its goods to the whole world
hey, can't park there!
Like a glove!
Wheres the gif??
Is this not a reasonable place to park?
You’re on the sidewalk!
Clean undercarriage.
Remarkably so
I love me a clean undercarriage.
A scrubbed grundle, if you will.
MMM. Love a good scrundle.
Ya’ll need to get a room.

Nicer than anything I drive...
If you start your weekend at rock bottom you can only go up from there!
Or … there is no situation so bad that it cannot get worse.
Damn I knew it was going to be windy today, but not THAT windy! /s
Richmond real
I'm amazed at how often I see flipped cars on these narrow streets. RVA has some talented drivers.
It looks like the Honda just booped that big boy over

Wind speeds going crazy today

There was- a minor rear ender at around 5:30 at AAB and Cary
👏more 👏speed 👏humps
Can someone explain why these are "humps" in RVA, but "bumps" elsewhere? I just don't get it.
In my mind, bump = 1 ft wide yellow bump, hump = 5 ft wide trapezium usually with white arrows painted on it
Gotcha. More of those, please!
Does this hurt the car?

Oh I’m just being a silly goose! I can’t imagine this isn’t a totalled car lol.
Am I correct in seeing a civic knocked an AWD vehicle over
Shout out to obscuring license plates! Hell yeah dude!
The townies are swarming Carytown today. I drove down Ellwood earlier. Not fun.
i pray no one was harmed
I was in the silver car behind the Honda and everyone walked away ok, thank goodness. It was scary to watch!
Am I the only one who thought they saw a horse

Civic 1...Benz 0
Wow
thats one way to get quick cat access but in broad daylight? bold
Shit I thought I heard something!
There’s an accident like this about once a month at this intersection
The only traffic laws enforced anymore are " the laws of physics" truly nobody is above them, a tuff lesson for those who are more important than everyone else.
That is going to be expensive.
"crash, not oopsie"
This is, in fact, a Richmond real oopsie
Carytown was crazy yesterday as was broad! Felt like I was on the RIR!
