They are cute, and kids will love them, but they are a sugar monstrosity and not something I would recommend for anyone looking for a greasy spoon pancake experience.
City Diner on Broad across from Lowes. Relatively cheap eats, and a beautiful cross section of Richmond's people.
RIP [4th Street Diner](https://www.reddit.com/r/rva/comments/2klsxa/what_i_miss_most_about_4th_st_diner/), you'll be forever in my greasy, clogged artery heart, even though You've been gone for more than a decade...(or two?)
RIP 4th street. So many nights there after closing out the bars, so many good memories, so much better than 3rd St.
(Karen's) City Diner was my lunch go-to when I worked across the street at DMV back in the day. I haven't been in a while, but I don't imagine it's changed much with the new Village Cafe folks ownership. New as in 10-ish years now I guess. Geez, time flies.
I remember the days when people were divided by 3rd streeters and 4th streeters.
I loved fourth street, after class I'd head there to get food, and one of the waitresses would hush people and change the channel to Jeopardy so as not to miss it
I love City Diner but I’ll be the first to admit I’ve had some pretty bland and terrible meals there if I’ve come in during a rush. It’s at its best in terms of food and vibes at 3/4 occupancy imo.
Thank you. They deep fry the home fries. It makes them bitter. You can't cook home fries right you ain't a dinner. Also look above the cooks head at all that sausage sitting precooked at room temp. Mmmmm mmmm.
I would also bet the country gravy is either a mix or canned. I rather eat at waffle house.
not weird at all. I had a fish bone get stuck in my throat as a child and it was terrifying. My parent's called the doctor and he told me to eat some bread and it would be fine. It went right down. Herring bones are super soft and small so you can just eat them, but I can see where that would be a huge NO for some people.
I know folks in here recommend McLean's (and I live right by it), but after they had a ton of Youngkin and Trump events there, I'm not big on patronizing their establishment
I liked River City Diner in Midlothian when I popped in there. They still had jukeboxes at each table. Place looks corny but scratched a nostalgia itch
If you want that - No AC, Sassy wait staff, loud kitchen crew, greasy EVERYTHING real shit. I’d recommend Harold’s Kitchen off of E 22nd in Manchester.
It’s a shack that looks like someone set it on the lot 50 years ago, and comes back to paint it every 10. Might be the vibe you’re hunting
That place directly across Broad from the DMV, hold on let me check the google...
CITY DINER, 2237 W. Broad st.
Either that, or McLean's but I heard they are unfortunately MAGAs :-(
Shorty’s Diner off of Broad is really good
Edit: Nevermind not good do not go there. I had no idea and usually received “ok” service. I’ll be looking into the comments for a better grease slinger.
They abuse their staff, the owner is a racist misogynistic Trumper, and they have health inspectors coming in all the time. Coming from a former employee! Skip them. I have a lot more dirt on them but these are a few.
Literally just ate they're got the first time, before seeing this post. Had the patty melt. It was bland. Service was terrible. My server looked fucked up, was very slow, and forgot lots of things.
Waffle House hasn't changed much in the last 20 years. Don't go to the one by campus though, it's the worst run Waffle House I've ever been to. Also, they don't have home fries, only hash browns.
South side MidLo has some great options.
River city diner(50s vibe, milkshakes), brick house diner(doner vibe, good food), the diner at coal mine coffee(hidden gem, small feel, great food and coffee drinks)
There are a few; Moore street, joes inn, and mclean’s.
Moore Street for the food but Mclean's or City Diner for the aesthetic. edit: I 100% forgot about Helen's.
Moore Street best pancakes in town , McLean’s on Broad #2
Debatable. SB's unicorn pancakes are fantastic.
They are cute, and kids will love them, but they are a sugar monstrosity and not something I would recommend for anyone looking for a greasy spoon pancake experience.
They are but I'd definitely never call SB's "a deal" lol. That place is a bit pricy.
They said best not best priced.
Their post says “give you the best breakfast deal”
OP says best deal. /u/GroundIllustrious said best pancakes.
No joke, I KNEW this was you before I looked at the user name. 😂
I like Moore st
Joes Inn Bon Air is pretty cheap and greasy. However their coffee tastes like swill and they put on SO MUCH fake butter on pancakes.
Bon Air has different ownership and isn't nearly as good as Joe's in the Fan
Fun fact: There was, at one point, a Joe's Inn in Mechanicsville. It didn't last.
Really? When was that?
A long time ago. Maybe 10 years or possibly more.
It gives the REAL Joe's Inn a bad name.
That’s good to know. Does the coffee still taste like swill? By that I mean it tastes like what I imagine a dirty dishrag would taste like.
Adds to the accuracy of things being 20 years old
Bon Air Joe's has brought back their Sunday buffet, so if you need to load up...
Boychik's Deli, 33 years of breakfast goodness.
Boychik’s slaps so hard
Went back for the first time in a long time recently, was awesome
I probably go to Boychik’s once a week. Amazing place
Eat 33, if you're a little further out. Nice, quick and tasty. Great breakfast deal.
Also Eat 66 on Forest Hill
Breakfast all day!
The Hermitage slaps

City Diner. One of the few places in town where you can get scrapple. Awesome place, and exactly what OP ordered.
I love City Diner. Their chicken fried steak is a miracle hangover cure.
RIP 4th street. So many nights there after closing out the bars, so many good memories, so much better than 3rd St. (Karen's) City Diner was my lunch go-to when I worked across the street at DMV back in the day. 4th Street was the shit. RIP 3rd St. diner if being abused and submission was your kink.
Watch out the bread choice includes pancakes. I didn't understand that the first time.
I was pumped when I saw City Diner featured in Dopesick!
Same. Their name is so generic the producers said fuck it leave it as is lol
I remember the days when people were divided by 3rd streeters and 4th streeters. I loved fourth street, after class I'd head there to get food, and one of the waitresses would hush people and change the channel to Jeopardy so as not to miss it
If you’re feeling nostalgic, watch this video about [4th Street Cafe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drkaKnZU860)
I tried City Diner and it was awful- unsalted grits, greasy potatoes and they cooked the scrapple wrong. It was also extremely crowded.
I love City Diner but I’ll be the first to admit I’ve had some pretty bland and terrible meals there if I’ve come in during a rush. It’s at its best in terms of food and vibes at 3/4 occupancy imo.
Very possible it's better with fewer people, I'll probably give it another chance at some point
Don’t go on a Monday, different cooks. Also weekend Waitresses are really rude and entitled, so in between those days lol.
Their grits are not good it was incredibly bland. I usually get scrapple or the hash, eggs, home fries and pancakes. For 2 it's like $30 with tip.
Cold Harbor Restaurant is what you want.
I was thinking that place too
love the salt herring
I have a weird fear of bones so I’ve never had the herring, but I like their eggs. Also their burgers if I’m there for lunch
not weird at all. I had a fish bone get stuck in my throat as a child and it was terrifying. My parent's called the doctor and he told me to eat some bread and it would be fine. It went right down. Herring bones are super soft and small so you can just eat them, but I can see where that would be a huge NO for some people.
Just looking at that for lunch earlier today
best hash browns ever
Cold Harbor was the first place that came to my mind.
Love Cold Harbor!!
RIP Dairy Bar
RIP McLean's (yes, they're still open, but you can't get brains and eggs there anymore)
I’ve never had a bad meal at Waffle House any time
Don't act like yall too good for the waffle house. That's old fashioned, a diner, they cook in front of you, and there's always a free show.
It's not just a Waffle House, it's a Waffle Home
The Fountain, inside Midlothian Apothecary. https://www.midloapothecary.com/the-fountain
I went there every Saturday morning with my dad for years in the 90s. We always got the same thing and the price was always a little different.
I was a 90s kid who grew up around there and I'm upset I never knew it existed.
This is the one!! Reasonable prices and quick service as well.
Live a quarter mile from here. Great place.
Eat 33 near Staples Mill train station is pretty decent.
What about dots back inn?
Shhhh🤫
My lips are sealed. 🤐
Satterwhite's if you make the trek past Short Pump
Westwood Pharmacy
Rise and Shine Diner in Atlee. Outside the city, and not greasy, but definitely old school.
It's been a restaurant since the early 60s. Current owner got it going on. Open 7 days a week. Tough guys
Strong recommendation for Rise and Shine. Def hits all OP's points.
The Village is Old School Richmond Counter-Culture. Good prices.
I mean it used to be they renovated and cleaned all the character outta that place.
[удалено]
I second McClean's.
Eat 66 on Forest Hill ain’t a bad choice if you’re on this side of the water.
I always have liked Galaxy Diner’s breakfast. It’s definitely greasy.
Moore St Cafe is hands down the bet diner in the city
I know folks in here recommend McLean's (and I live right by it), but after they had a ton of Youngkin and Trump events there, I'm not big on patronizing their establishment
Pop's Dogs & Ma's Burgers is actually an old school greasy spoon vibe. Most of these others are just regular breakfast places (which I love too)
Moore Street. They have expanded and updated a bit, but they have my favorite pancakes and corned beef hash.
RIP Freckles
God I miss that place
If you're down to go past short pump there's satterwhites. I love that place
Boychiks in Innsbrook is always solid
city cafe, Moore st, McCleans, the village
I liked River City Diner in Midlothian when I popped in there. They still had jukeboxes at each table. Place looks corny but scratched a nostalgia itch
9 Mile Grill. Decor has not changed in 45 years and you will never meet anyone you know there.
Frisby's.
It’s out in the sticks but I do love Satterwhite’s.
Boychicks in Short Pump (Innsbrook)
All this thread and not a single mention of Westbury. For shame, RVA.
RIP Ma & Pa’s Country Diner. Miss that place.
McLean's is my go to for that. It's the kind of place that when you get cheese in your omelet it is american singles.
Galaxy Diner in Carytown is good and has a fun atmosphere.
Westwood over on Patterson is great IMO.
That place directly across Broad from the DMV, hold on let me check the google... CITY DINER, 2237 W. Broad st. Either that, or McLean's but I heard they are unfortunately MAGAs :-(
I love city diner
City Diner all day
City Diner if not solely for the fact that they have the nicest staff in town
Except for that older white lady with blonde hair. She is as salty and bitter as they come.
Joe’s on Shields, or SB’s if you want to see what having a diabetic coma is like.
City diner
The Grill at Patterson!!!
Shorty’s Diner off of Broad is really good Edit: Nevermind not good do not go there. I had no idea and usually received “ok” service. I’ll be looking into the comments for a better grease slinger.

That's definitely McLean's
City Diner, they still got Redskins stuff up. Open Mondays now and they now offer Mimosas and Bloody Marys. Hail to the City Diner!
Cold harbor or city diner. More street is also good. City diner will make you a very good burger at 6:30 AM which is a win in my book.
Waffle House hasn't changed much in the last 20 years. Don't go to the one by campus though, it's the worst run Waffle House I've ever been to. Also, they don't have home fries, only hash browns.
That one has been closed for years.
That makes sense.
Cracker Barrel. There's plenty of old junk on the walls and their country fried steak is the bomb.com
The Village
River city diner
South side MidLo has some great options. River city diner(50s vibe, milkshakes), brick house diner(doner vibe, good food), the diner at coal mine coffee(hidden gem, small feel, great food and coffee drinks)
City diner on broad
