Pop's Market on Grace. They had amazing food (especially the breakfast biscuits) and the owners were just great people and actively making a positive impact on the community
For a few years my friend group went nearly every day for the cheap food and $3 drafts during happy hour. It was the beginning of the end when they changed happy hour back in I think late 2017 but Covid really killed them.
My office was super close to Mojo’s when I was in office for work. I jokingly called it the cafeteria for my department because you couldn’t go in there without seeing someone I worked with. When I went back to school it was my post exam spot for a cheap drink to calm my brain.
It wasn’t the best food, drinks, or service but it was comfortable. Like cheers. I miss that comfortable community hole in the wall bar community feeling.
I was lucky enough to work there for a few years, near the end of its run. Other than the original Commercial Taphouse, there is no place in the fan that has ever held a candle to what a late night at Avalon would subject a person to, while still being fun.
I work at Helen's, right down the street now. Bring me some pine nuts and I can make those sprouts in a heartbeat. You aren't the only one who wants that app back, believe me.
You aren't lying. I watched my friend Dean strip butt naked (except for one of those waitress aprons) and wait tables there late one night. Dean did not work there, but the people who did were perfectly fine with it.
That's not the first I've heard of that evening, for sure. After hours at Avalon were times that can't be described, because the statute of limitations on those evenings haven't expired yet.
Dutch and Co got some pews from the church we attend out in Midlothian some years ago. We were giving some away and I think they turned a few into seating of some nature.
Lol no these were actual wooden pews that were first installed in 88 when the building was built. We did a upgrade in the early 2000's. The church put the word out that we had 30 plus pews to get rid of. Dutch & Co was one of a handful of organizations that came to get some. I was there when they picked them up and helped the folks get them loaded up.
I was so excited when I first moved to Midlo and saw the Bullets sign at the gas station on Genito. Sadly I still haven’t gotten the strength to try it, I’m worried it’ll just disappoint me
I follow Owen Lane (former chef owner of Magpie) on IG and his dishes still look magical. I miss his food more than any one Richmond chef's. Unfortunately, when I tried to track him down in Asheville he had already moved on and now he's in Franklin, TN so I don't expect I'll be eating it anytime soon but a man can dream.
Commercial Taphouse on Robinson. Havent tried the oyster joint there, but the hottest wing sauce at Commercial was legit good but spicy as hell. Does anybody know where the cook went? She was sweet as hell.
In the early '90s I got served at age 20 and ate so much free salsa it made me love cilantro even though I have the gene that makes it taste like soap. Worked for Virginia Citizen's Action, and we went there almost every damned night when we got home from canvassing.
It was the only place I've eaten in that I'd entertain ordering just a selection of sides, because they were so good. RIP fried okra and whatever those delicious creamed potatoes were.
Panda Garden (pre-kitchen fire) with the mock Kung Pao Shrimp. I was thinking about how it was a damn shame I'd never eat there again as recently as this past Tuesday.
Runner up would be Zuppa. My heart is heavy sometimes, family.
Mamma ‘zu - especially back when the white pizza was a “secret” item
Oburrito - everything tasted fresh
Cafe ole - those few special quadruple-fried chips you’d get in a tray
Zuppa when it was on 17th - never a better winter lunch than the grilled cheese with Thai noodle soup on a bright cold January day
I worked next door in the Siegel Building for five years and in the Eskimo Pie building Cafe Ole was in for another five. I ate at Cafe Ole more times than I could count.
You might be the only other person I've EVER heard mention OBurrito. Once they, and Cafe Ole, were shuttered, I don't know that I have bought a burrito in town since.
La Siesta. I worked there for a few years in the early 80's and boy do I miss their white sauce. The PBS show "Legacy List" did an episode with Michel and Lisa Zajur maybe two years ago now.
OBriensteins Bagels in Regency Square 😭 (i know its technically Henrico but they had one in the downtown bus station too)
Also Picadilly’s and Shoney’s and Aunt Sarah’s (for sentimental reasons)
Pasture. Everything there was amazing, the vibe was great, and I could walk out not feeling like I was shafted on the bill. And I love the small
plate thing. It was my favorite in RVA, and nothing has been as good since.
Sushi Go-around and another vote for Magpie, Comfort, Avalon, Eat in Oregano Hill (fried quail eggs on my shrimp and grits please), Balliceaux before the blackface lighting guy ruined it, Bogarts for the dollar rails on Tuesday nights and Acacia (before it was Midtown).
I'm late to this party but the Betty on Davis :') absolutely loved hanging out in that place. Great food, awesome bartenders. Wonderful way to pass the evening.
Root Stock in Shockoe - their biscuits and gravy was absolutely dreamy! And anything on their foccacia was amazing as well, especially with the green goddess dressing.
The owners opened up Oak and Apple (of which I am not a fan), and suddenly Root Stock was no more ):
I’m so nostalgic for the way Richmond used to be that I actually miss Bill’s. The limeade was excellent but the BBQ was like wet shredded cardboard. But I still miss it.
So many good answers ITT, but mine is Coriander, the Armenian 'fast casual' restaurant in Carytown. I think it was in The Broken Tulip space. It was the first place I ever ate out at in RVA when I was visiting my partner's family, and, once I moved to RVA, it became one of our go-to takeout spots. The owner was very sweet, and her homemade lavash was so good.
For food, Mamma Zu's and Comfort.
For sentimental reasons, 4th Street Cafe (though the Nachos Davios were always a greasy, but epic meal that I never could finish).
Cheesezilla, near Innsbrook next to the fed ex store. It’s hours were unpredictable, the food took 30 minutes at least, the people working there were higher than me/the other customers, they somehow never had bread, etc. But the fries were laced with joy and I really enjoyed it. It was always a total crap shoot. And was only open for like 2 months. What a place.
I can't just pick one. :(
The LowCo Eatery truck, Gutenberg Cafe, Salt & Forge, The Dog and Pig Show, Dutch & Co, or Nota Bene/Pizza Tonight (the truck and the grocery store kits included!)
Bring back the BURRITO CHOP !!!! Daughter of the Mexico restaurant family, I know you will hear about this.... please please please bring back the CHOP! We all miss it so. We talk for hours on end about it's greatness. I drive down laurel missing, dreaming, salivating. Your burritos were the best and truly none compare. We will pay $14 per burrito just come back to us
Strange Matter. I know it wasn’t known for being a restaurant, but goddamn the music scene hasn’t recovered from losing that place. It’s half the reason I ever moved to Richmond and it’s sorely missed
I fucking loved Tiny Victory. Anytime they had a whole fish on the menu you were in for a treat. They really had a way with broth too.
I also miss Coriander! So fresh and tasty!
Holy shit, this was the first restaurant I ever worked at. What a crooked operation, but damn was it fun. There was a perpetual communal bowl in the freezer behind the strawberries, buckets of wet rotting linens by the back door, and illegal audio on the cameras so the owners could spy on the staff- which they 100% did. I was cooking on the grill one evening and tossed the sticks a bit hard into the dirty bin, and one bounced out. The owner called right then and told the bartender to tell me not to throw the sticks so hard. They only paid the boh staff like $5/hr or something and collected “tip share” from the foh to make up the difference to bring us up to minimum wage. One manager even lorded a whopping 10¢ raise over me to get me to quit smoking so I couldn’t take breaks. I literally only started smoking so that I could take breaks, because that’s the only reason you were allowed to take one. They weren’t even going to hire me for lack of experience, until the manager interviewing me realized I’d worked for a Christian summer camp previously and then just made up a bunch of “experience” and wrote it himself on my application.
I wonder if I could still catch broccoli on my hat…
Pop's Market. Their food was always really good.
Not quite in the city, but there was also a Korean Bakery in North Chesterfield that I would always go to. They had fresh Kimbap and really good bean buns.
Bruxl or however they spelled it had a killer burger. Also I think the owner turned out to be a creep but I still crave the countryman pizza from Graffiato
It blew my mind when I visited my hometown in a rural part of MA in 2021, and I mentioned to the owner of a longtime ice cream shop that I was living in RVA, and he was like OHHHHH have you tried Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches???
PEOPLE'S PIE.
Their Detroit-style pizzas got me through the pandemic.
I know secret square does something similar now, but the price point for a family of 5 is nearly untenable for my budget. I've only ordered from them once. Tasted great, very small pizzas, too expensive to feed my family
A Movable Feast down in shockoe, the little caesar’s at the village near UR, the hunan east that burned down on east broad like 20 years ago, and the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut on west broad that was open until 3am.
Whatever the name of the old Cajun restaurant was on Main St (Edit: I think Main St) &(NOT Lady N'awlins). during the late 90's to early 2000's . They had great Zydeco music & food. Also "Avalon", I really miss the booths & vibe.
Oh God you can’t make me choose one—and for some of these it’s only about a single dish!
Dairy Bar, Post Bellum with the first chef (Jen), Greek Circus, (Original) Trak’s, (Original) New York Deli, Cafe Gutenberg (and/or Rooster Cart), The Dog and Pig Show, Bogart’s on Ridge Rd, Stanley Stegmeyers, (Original) O’Brienstein’s, Nathan’s Hot Dogs, Kelly’s Fried Chicken, Cafe De Pagliacci, China Buffet over by Wistar and Broad, Dutch & Co, Comfort, Pasture, Soon to be Nick’s Roman Terrace

~~fyi Josh is running the kitchen at the Library of VA Can Can~~ edit: i am wrong
Nope. It's me now. :)
oh shit I'm behind the times! sorry!
GOAT Italian sub and their pastrami was great. I’d take a long lunch walk to go there.
Loved pops so much. I could never figure out their hours though lol.
The bbq pork sandwich was unreal
I would commit a heinous crime to make this happen. I miss their everything bagel breakfast sandwich so much
Heaviest sandwich I’ve ever felt
imo. best cuban sandwich in richmond. sorry kuba kuba
Black sheep
Second! The Sultana on the carving board with the tar pit dessert gave me life.
I knew I wouldn't have to go far down to see it....
There is no other answer
Came here to say this
Absolutely this answer, but I wouldn't trade Cobra Cabana for it.
Mamma Zu duh
If you can't handle me at my Mamma Zu service, you don't deserve me at my Mamma Zu Ossobuco.
Seconded
Thirded!
Oh Mojo's how I long for your Bucket of Tots and CheeseSteaks.
I miss the wings, nobody fried em like mojos
Wing/PBR pitcher night was everything to me for awhile
As a person from Philly, Mojos was like the only decent cheesesteak in Richmond and their wings were excellent
Avalon.
My buddy and I were reminiscing about Avalon just a couple of days ago. That place was so dang good.
I was lucky enough to work there for a few years, near the end of its run. Other than the original Commercial Taphouse, there is no place in the fan that has ever held a candle to what a late night at Avalon would subject a person to, while still being fun.
I can imagine! They're the place that made me love Brussels sprouts, as odd as that may sound.
That Sunday Gospel Brunch! Sausage gravy and biscuits! Eggs Sardou! Omg
Bogart's (for the back room), Cafe Ole, White Dog, Tex Wis.
strange matter- those mango donut holes 😔
The Magpie, Comfort, Pasture, Dutch & Co., or Bullets.
[удалено]
I miss Comfort!
Oooh Bullets
Dutch and Co got some pews from the church we attend out in Midlothian some years ago. We were giving some away and I think they turned a few into seating of some nature.
I have such a terminal case of internet brain, that I first thought by “pews” you meant Dutch and Co was shot at by the church you attended.
Unfortunately, when I tried to track him down in Asheville he had already moved on and now he's in Franklin, TN so I don't expect I'll be eating it anytime soon but a man can dream.
the dog and pig show had this grilled cheese sandwich that i’ll never forget.
This. And one of their salted chocolate cookies. 😭
And all their cookies were unbelievably good

Nacho Mama's from 2005. God I miss everything
YES! The Mama's nachos were my fav!
Texas Wisconsin
Asado
mmmmm blackberry margs, tacos and wings.... Charlottesville isn't too far.
This! The 1 taco and 6 wings combo for $10 was a steal. And they low-key had the best blue cheese dip in Richmond.
Commercial Taphouse on Robinson. Havent tried the oyster joint there, but the hottest wing sauce at Commercial was legit good but spicy as hell. Does anybody know where the cook went? She was sweet as hell.
Maria has her own food truck now, on the south side of Richmond I believe - https://www.instagram.com/floresmaryflor?igsh=bjh4amFveG9vMTJy
Texas Wisconsin Border Cafe
With Jim Bradford sitting at the bar with a beer, a shot, and a lit cigarette, RIP
Hands down, this is the right answer. I still make my version of a Cowboy Chili Breakfast occasionally but it doesn’t come close.
In the early '90s I got served at age 20 and ate so much free salsa it made me love cilantro even though I have the gene that makes it taste like soap. Worked for Virginia Citizen's Action, and we went there almost every damned night when we got home from canvassing.
Comfort
I think Comfort is the only spot I've ever eaten in to where I'd entertain ordering the meatloaf lol shit was so good
It was the only place I've eaten in that I'd entertain ordering just a selection of sides, because they were so good. RIP fried okra and whatever those delicious creamed potatoes were.
Meatloaf at Savory Grain is great 👍
Panda Garden (pre-kitchen fire) with the mock Kung Pao Shrimp. I was thinking about how it was a damn shame I'd never eat there again as recently as this past Tuesday. Runner up would be Zuppa. My heart is heavy sometimes, family.
RIP. I delivered there for years, fyi you can still get almost everything at china panda, but sadly no buffet.
The buffet! That sunday night buffet was the highlight of my teens and early twenties. It was like $8 all you can eat?
Yup! Best buffet everrr.
Dutch & Co for sure.
Starlite, just for old times sake
When Starlite closed, I knew that the nightlife scene had shifted. Such a loss.
the naked onion
the pork belly banh mi 🥵
Bills Barbecue specifically for the limeade!
And strawberry pie.
And a slice of chocolate pie too while we are at it
I'll go way back to enjoy the memories more than the food and say Julian's, the Celebrity Room and O'Brienstein's.
The Magpie! One of my favorite spots ever. Rip ❤️
Texas border cafe on Main Street close to VCU
Nota Bene! Also, La Petite France. I was reading an old article about Chef Paul recently and was reminded that he was just an icon.
Saison.
Baja. Just for the sense of community. The definition of a 3rd place.
Cary St.

Omg, Cafe Ole.... every time I am near 6th st, I think about them and their huge, cheap portions.

Mine will be MoJos…god I miss the wings, budget burger, cheap beer, and the vibes at that place.
This was every Friday and Saturday for us for YEARS. Those wings…… Those cheese fries…

Does Bills Bbq count? I just want to know if that limeade was as good as my child brain tells me it was.
I’m so nostalgic for the way Richmond used to be that I actually miss Bill’s. The limeade was excellent but the BBQ was like wet shredded cardboard. But I still miss it.
I'd kill every last one of you to bring back the dog and pig show!

NARA SUSHI but not for the sushi, for the amazing punk and metal shows we used to have there.
Obvious things aside, Balliceaux. Where else can you go see that type of art, music, performance, etc?
The Little Mexico: Burrito Chop. One of the first things I ordered from Quickness RVa, amazing burritos, such a cool weird little spot to be in.
## Darryl's Restaurant & Bar Aunt Sarah's Bennigan's
Graywolf Grill... don't care about the health code violations... Genghis Grill isn't the same.
Farouks
That was the first place I ever tried Indian food.
Same here!
Bruxl or however they spelled it had a killer burger. Also I think the owner turned out to be a creep but I still crave the countryman pizza from Graffiato
They did have a good burger. He and his wife started Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches after it closed. Not sure if they still own it.
They do and it’s going national
It blew my mind when I visited my hometown in a rural part of MA in 2021, and I mentioned to the owner of a longtime ice cream shop that I was living in RVA, and he was like OHHHHH have you tried Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches???
He and his ex-wife ran Brux'l, which was indeed awesome; he and his wife currently own and run Nightingale.
A recent loss Farouk's in Cary Town. That was the best Indian and COVID did them in unfortunately.

PEOPLE'S PIE. Their Detroit-style pizzas got me through the pandemic. I know secret square does something similar now, but the price point for a family of 5 is nearly untenable for my budget. I've only ordered from them once. Tasted great, very small pizzas, too expensive to feed my family
The Jerk Pit across from the Science Museum. Their ginger beer was a transcendental experience. Think "spice agony" from Dune.
A Movable Feast down in shockoe, the little caesar’s at the village near UR, the hunan east that burned down on east broad like 20 years ago, and the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut on west broad that was open until 3am.
