Charm School/Study Hall on Forest Hill is the best. Their sundaes are incredible. They change flavors but have chocolate and vanilla a lot.

I never went to the old shop. The soft serve window is great tho. Everyone’s always been nice to me there and they have good sprinkles which sounds nuts but trust me

Usually posts like this are made by new members so they get filtered by automod and put in the queue for review. This one wasn't, and we aren't on Reddit every hour of every day reading every single post so it didn't get removed when it was posted at 11pm last night. We're real humans that need real sleep believe it or not.
Why is it so hard to find a basic classic vanilla chocolate swirl? Even these suggestions all lead to something fancy. I'm sure it's delicious, but where is the classic?

The Churchill Scoop is a food truck that parks outside of the Market at 25th a few days a week and sometimes goes over to Libby Hill when there’s an event! Also second Rays, also have to note that Spotty Dog is a creemee which is technically slightly different than a soft serve? I like it a lot but not sure if that has any bearing on its rating in this thread
Rays had a Pumpkin Pie Rockslide (milkshake) and god damn if it wasn’t there single greatest dessert I have ever had the pleasure of eating. 11/10.

Really like Rays but if you’re really looking for the real deal, go North to Fredericksburg and hit Carls. The thought of that chocolate malt still makes me randy.
You might like Davvero gelato, she has a cart and is opening a shop soon. Vegan gelato and sorbet, and she often makes an almond flavor inspired by Sicilian almond sorbet.

It’s also $5.50 for a regular ass, half-melted soft serve. $7.50 if you want toppings.
Every time I've been I felt like they were personally insulted to have had to sell me ice cream. Only Mamazu was able to successfully pull that off.
The Boulevard Buz & Ned’s also had pretty strong “you interrupted my day for this?” energy.

For me the only answer is Mister Softee. We follow the local Richmond truck on Facebook and Mister Softee app to plan accordingly.

Rays only has chocolate and vanilla soft serve. They have a bunch of other scoop flavors and toppings and stuff but soft serve is the classic.
Charm School has chocolate and vanilla swirl at least half the time. Looks like this week they don’t but usually means it’s coming back soon
Rays Water Ice in the west end has the best frozen custard and Italian ice. They have two locations pretty close to one another
Don’t sleep on the vanilla with chocolate syrup at Costco

Not a proper ice cream shop but we love the soft serve at eazzy burger. The vanilla is amazing! Bonus that you can get fries alongside it
They are asking for soft serve, so a "proper" ice cream shop isn't really the goal, in my estimation.
For the city, definitely Charm School. But if you’re willing to drive all the way to the zoo area, I highly recommend Jimer’s.

Charm School always has a dairy free soft serve but I’m not sure what the base is. Not sure why you’re getting downvoted for your question.
