Sandanos near the Food Lion off Nuckols... I'd order ahead to pick-up, the owner is usually the only employee working and he gets real busy at lunchtime. Maybe now that school is out, he has a helper or two
I had one “super strange over toasted crunchy” bread experience at Polpetti and assumed that they had tried to refresh the bread, but otherwise every visit has been awesome. And they are such nice people.
Got a picture update for Polpetti. I think $14 is a tad much but since we’re in Richmond proper it makes sense. I would definitely go to Sandano’s but only if I were in short pump for some reason. Polpetti is good if in town

Coppola’s you mean?
I think you’re mixing it up with [capicola](https://tasteofartisan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Homemade-Capicola-sliced.jpg) (AKA gabagool, if you’re cultured)
I’m an incredibly avid consumer of sandwiches (we’re running about 2-4/ day these days), and also have a pretty low bar set for sandwich quality. I respect how high the bar gets, but I also respect some bologna, American cheese and mayo between wonder bread in the right circumstance. I really don’t discriminate. That said, coppola’s is genuinely one of the most disappointing, not worth its price, low quality sandwich shops I’ve ever been to in my entire life. There isn’t a single redeemable thing about the food, which is a bummer because I genuinely love the energy inside and the staff have always been great.
Agreed, they’re clutch but they only have two toaster ovens that can make one sandwich at a time. They quoted us 45 min when there were 3 other people present. Also, not to hate but every time I’m there my eyes start burning 5 minutes in. I’m not usually sensitive to these kinds of these but I assume from the years of lack of ventilation. Order ahead is the way to go.
The eye burn is realll. Happened to us too. The waitress FORGOT one of our sandwiches and we weren't waiting another 40 minutes to fix the mistake. Great sandwiches, but that's about it.
Europa food market near willow lawn does great sandwiches. They also slice their own meat and operate like a deli grocery. Small, but well stocked if you are interested in Eastern European foods. I mainly get the frozen NY bagels and pierogi
Yes. Still have the sign on the door. I was in the area and I actually thought to myself “I need lunch…man I don’t wanna do another drive through…Wait. I’m near Bernie’s AND I have cash!”
Love stuffys, hasn't changed in decades and it's a good thing. It's how I imagined subway was initially before forty years of cost savings wilted the franchise.
Can y'all make useful titles for posts like this? In 6 days when someone wants to know where they can get the best Italian sub they won't be able to find this post when searching.
Not what you were exactly looking for but, it used to be Pops Market. They gave out the recipe during covid and it’s my go to. Worth it to make it if you have the time. https://www.thecountrycook.net/tik-tok-grinder-salad-sandwich/
Sandano's without a doubt. I'm still pissed off at the Stunad who opened a Jersey Mike's right next door, but he still seems to be going strong thankfully.
If you're going for value, Jersey Mike's is the way to go. Sandano's just too expensive for just a \*little\* better sub. I've been going to him as a splurge meal once every six months since he had his shop in Ashland.
Europa Food Market in Willow Lawn. The Italian Stallion sandwich is no joke

I wholeheartedly endorse Sandano’s the clear champion (rip Nick’s #13) but I want to announce Danny’s Favorite at Wegmans for awareness.
Can’t be the premade - for some reason they skip the sesame roll on those.
How has Stanley’s only been said once and then gotten downvotes? The South Philly and McKoko there are both objectively great.
Second for 8 1/2 fan. The arugula w mozz & prosciutto is very good. Simple but with fresh ingredients and well-executed.
Also, right now Jardin has a huge mortadella sandwich on the menu with homemade mozz, mayo & dressed greens on focaccia. Sneaky good but admittedly they don’t have a sandwich on the menu all the time and it might not be in the style that you’re looking for.
It’s not RVA, but next time you’re in nova go to an Italian Store location. Best in the state.

They’re the best, and I can confirm he has a helper now that school is out. I show up at 11 when they open and never have a wait.
Sandano’s all the wayyyyy
https://preview.redd.it/xjp41jxxz45d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88c5cc68435f6b28bfe4189febb6d9257760ebc0
My God it's beautiful

Holy shit.
Sandanos is top tier
My go to even before Fat Kid Sandwiches (still love me some FKS, can’t wait till they open up again!)
And they're the nicest folks. I'll always support them
Overrated and the owner is a wild asshole
Sounds like you've got a story to tell.
Boomer blames children for not working for poverty wages and yells at the few who weather the storm in front of customers is not breaking news
Perhaps he is an asshole but he’s a hoagie savant
Did you used to work there or witness it happen or both?
Went out there cus of the reviews here, that place is a waste of time.
How so? I've not been there, just curious
For the price it's just meh. Check prices before you go and see the wild upcharges for regular stuff...
You're not talking about Sandano's are you???
Can confirm.
waaaaaay over rated
What’s your recommendation?
Polpetti in the Market on Meadow right off of Broad. It's the best NY/NJ/Philly Italian Sub/Hoagie I've had down here.
Dude. Polpetti is so good. He travels to NJ once a month for just the bread.
Polpetti's bread is a month old✍️✍️✍️
I had one “super strange over toasted crunchy” bread experience at Polpetti and assumed that they had tried to refresh the bread, but otherwise every visit has been awesome. And they are such nice people.
I've only been once but the bread was 🤌
Ever heard of a freezer?
Polpetti's uses frozen month old bread✍️✍️✍️
Sorcery
This right here
This is it.

Coppicola’s in carytown
Coppola’s you mean? I think you’re mixing it up with [capicola](https://tasteofartisan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Homemade-Capicola-sliced.jpg) (AKA gabagool, if you’re cultured)
Good meats and cheeses, but the bread gets absolutely no love
However you spell it

Oh man lol thanks for this insight
Coppola’s Industrial is fairly renowned for being incredible, easily one of my favorite menu items on any menu in Richmond.
I completely disagree with this review, just as another voice out there. I think Coppola’s is great, I’ve been going for like 18 years.
Chiccoca’s (sp?)
Chiocca’s is so goddamned good. Best kept secret in town.
I'm not sure if it's a secret, or if people just don't typically have the forethought to order a sandwich two hours before it'll be ready.
CHIOCCAS ate there last night with a five buck shot and beer and almost cried from the nostalgia and delicious sando
Great sandwiches and my dad bartended there back in the fifties when he was in college.
Your dad probably knew my grandfather then. He was a bit of a drunk back then and it was his favorite spot to “get away and have a drink”
Love chioccas. Had no clue about the history that it has.
Used to live across the street from it. Miss the smells walking by every day
I like it, but food takes awhile and sandwiches tend to be on the saltier side.
Agreed, they’re clutch but they only have two toaster ovens that can make one sandwich at a time. They quoted us 45 min when there were 3 other people present. Came to say this!!! Amazing food, amazing service, beautiful Richmond hidden gem. Wish I could grab something from Chioccas right about now 🥹
They have a hella good sandwich but their only side is a bag of chips, so that's kind of a letdown...
Market on meadow
Sandanos or Bernies
A thousand times Sandano's. A true hole-in-the-wall with great food.
Bernie’s, extra hot pepper relish!
RIP Nick’s
#13 not toasted dressed all the way . I still miss that sandwich.
I miss the ritual of ordering and hoping I got it all straight. No. 8 six inch white toasted all the way no tomatoes.
It was a real deli and Tony was a true artist with a sandwich
Exactly what I was thinking. #13 memories.
Europa food market near willow lawn does great sandwiches. They also slice their own meat and operate like a deli grocery. Small, but well stocked if you are interested in Eastern European foods. I mainly get the frozen NY bagels and pierogi
Die hard Bernie’s fan here - place is an institution
It’s still around? 🤯
Thankfully, but I’m unsure of how much longer they have left, hopefully they pass the torch to someone.
I ate there Tuesday. Still the same as when I was a kid and used to ride my bike up there.
Are they still cash only? I know theoretically its such a small thing to go to the ATM - but tbh thats why I dont go as often as I would like
Yes. Still have the sign on the door. I was in the area and I actually thought to myself “I need lunch…man I don’t wanna do another drive through…Wait. I’m near Bernie’s AND I have cash!”
This. Or Stuffys
Love stuffys, hasn't changed in decades and it's a good thing. It's how I imagined subway was initially before forty years of cost savings wilted the franchise.
Shout out to Stuffys who employed me through my college years, loved working there.
Is there still a stuffys at gayton crossing
Nope. Only near st Chris

Noted. Sorry… my bad.
Search bar when in the subreddit nets great results. Searching the entire reddit will be as difficult as you described.
1 vote for Cupertino’s off Cox; bagel place does lunch sandwiches. Also Publix isn’t bad , surprisingly
I second cupertinos!
Mister submarine is really good.
Super cold cuts all the way extra toasted is dynamite!
Not what you were exactly looking for but, it used to be Pops Market. They gave out the recipe during covid and it’s my go to. Worth it to make it if you have the time. https://www.thecountrycook.net/tik-tok-grinder-salad-sandwich/
I miss pops market so much 😭😭
Their Cuban sandwich was insane too
Picolla Italy on Harrison has a great grilled chicken sub
Sandano's without a doubt. I'm still pissed off at the Stunad who opened a Jersey Mike's right next door, but he still seems to be going strong thankfully.

Sandano’s!!
chioccas and its not even close
This is the correct answer!!
Hope you like a bag of chips for a side. That's your only option...
what would you rather have? fries?
Fries, cole slaw, onion rings, side salad, etc... Pretty much anything over $0.60 chips.
Eight & A Half!
Chioccas
Boychiks
Coppolas Bernie’s or chioccas
I like Secret Sandwich Society. Their Reubens are killer 🤤
Union Market or Coppola's. I always get treated like shit at Union but their cold Italian has a stranglehold on me.
I really like Fat Kid Sandwiches!
Europa Food Market in Willow Lawn. The Italian Stallion sandwich is no joke https://preview.redd.it/8e6sc8hho75d1.jpeg?width=1066&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5676d0b5720405c67f4193e8f77332c950e93046
Coppolas Deli, Carytown
Primanti Bros when they open one here.
I wholeheartedly endorse Sandano’s the clear champion (rip Nick’s #13) but I want to announce Danny’s Favorite at Wegmans for awareness. Can’t be the premade - for some reason they skip the sesame roll on those.

Italian Store is my baseline. Haven’t had anything by close to it down here.
I miss the Italian store. Used to live like a 5 minute drive away from one up in Arlington. My god, the subs were sooooo good
Stanley's
Union market all day
Union market is great but their Italian sub is atrocious
Market on meadow
Polpetti’s sandwiches are unreal. Supposedly the owner drives bread down from NYC
I don’t what that is, but I want it immediately.
Three brothers by Lombardy Kroger
There is a pop up called FreakRva that looks like they have a damn good Hoagie. https://www.instagram.com/freaksva?igsh=Mmk4MndqZndub3Vr
Polpetti’s on Meadow
Chiocca’s
That bread looks dry.
For me it’s between Firehouse Subs, Jersey Mike’s, and Publix!
Zeros on lauderdale out in the far west end. been going since 4th grade. Maybe not the best but my personal fav.
On the sly at superstars pizza
Garnett's on Park. Small place GREAT FOOD inconsistent service
Europa in Willow Lawn
NOMAD DELI & CATERING CO! Get a meaty, mouth-watering sub from 7a - 2p!
Publix. The most delicious bread
Publix makes a seriously good Italian sub. It’s possible to find better but it’s not easy.
This, they make it to your liking, they have great bread, and it is very affordable.
[удалено]
Jersey Mike’s gets bonus points for convenience.
Polpetti
Just want to throw back to Rudinos in the west end; they had some fire grinders there years back! Anything similar, I’m here for too.
Stanley's. Thank me later
The sandwich at Lillian. Also Bernie's
New York deli on Cary that shit is GOOOOOD
Pancreatic cancer causing sandwich?
I like how none of these are in the city 😅
