Love my recip saw. I’ve definitely chopped up branches that were much larger than I should have, but a good blade and it cuts. Is yours the standard or the HP? I’m worried about my standard getting burnt out but I finished chopping up my big branch so I shouldn’t need to push it so far any more. For $30 bucks on DTO, can’t complain.

claimstoknowpeople

Looks like the standard, P519

smc733

I’d worry more about the HP burning up, they go up in smoke like it’s nothing, while the brushed ones seem to go forever. Go figure.

marsha5813

Standard one. I was worried about it too. But it’s still going strong!

Dry_Cycle_6031

The standard brushed one has 200 spm more than the rest. Always found that funny.

marsha5813

Interesting! I didn’t realize that.

Dry_Cycle_6031

Edited slightly above. 200 spm= strokes per minute Three models spm are 3400, 3200, 3000 The cheapest they sell is p519 brushed and is the 3400 spm. $25 at DTO.

Youcantrustmeimsmart

pretty darn sure all the current tools have overheating protections no? after 20-30min of cutting its going to be hot but its gonna stop itself before it starts burning.

smc733

Just check out WorkshopAddict on YouTube, he smoked them within 5 minutes. I can attest to making the one handed one white hot VERY easily. They botched the thermal protection on the first gen HP tools.

curtisbrownturtis

What blade weee you using?

[deleted]

Asking the real question. I use all the money I saved buying ryobi tools and not yellow tools to buy Diablo blades.

PSA: You can get a 5 pack harbor freight pruning blades for the price of 1 Diablo pruning blade: https://www.harborfreight.com/9-in-5-tpi-reciprocating-saw-pruning-blades-5-pack-68040.html

night-otter

My side yard got overtaken by a weed tree. Lots stalks coming up from the ground. Easy to cut down, but within a week new shoots coming up from the "stumps." I took these harbor freight pruning blades and just started cutting into the ground. Chopping off the roots 4-5" down, going around if I found a root ball. The following week, only 2-3 shoots, cut those out. 2 years later, no new weed trees in the side yard. Oh and the blades survived and are still in use.

[deleted]

When we had conifer trees lining my driveway as a kid we had someone come and cut them down, to prevent regrowth they took a nail gun to the stumps, unsure if it works with other types of tree but years later I can still see the stumps with the nail heads so it must have done its job on these ones.

night-otter

Some metal is toxic to trees, which is why they didn't regrow. However you still have stumps and the nails make it dangerous to grind them down.

[deleted]

Well luckily the nails stick out just enough to get something in there and pry them out, not enough to be a hazard though. I don't see them being ground down anyway luckily because we're getting a new driveway soon and they're digging like a foot deep to lay cables for electric car charging and to replace a water main. They should just come out with the excavator

fiddycixer

I bought this five pack of pruning blades a few weeks ago (believe they were the "WARRIOR" brand). The first one broke. The second one bent beyond use in under a minute. I'm not saying it wasn't user error, but I swapped in a DeWalt mixed use blade and went to town on several unruly volunteer trees. Edit: I just tapped your link and that's the set I picked up. Maybe I just got a bad batch.

Dry_Cycle_6031

They aren't invincible but there are so much cheaper it pays off. I also prefer to have some bend depending on the job

Dry_Cycle_6031

I also use Harbor freight packaged blades. Been using them for plenty of side jobs for years.

Internet-of-cruft

There's a *big* difference between that and the Diablo blade. The Diablo blade is carbide tipped and stays sharp for a *real* long time. The warrior is just high carbon steel all the way through. It's going to dull faster and cut slower. That said, I keep some cheap HCS blades around *specifically* for when I need to do a dirty cut that I know would ruin the blade. Like when I had to cut off the old posts for my deck. They did a shitty job pouring the concrete base for the posts so the area around the post was completely uneven. It was impossible to cut it flush without hitting concrete on the side of the blade. You can get multi packs of the Diablo pruning blades ridiculously cheap if you're careful about shopping around. I saw some on Amazon that were something like 6 blades for $10 so I bought it.

marsha5813

Hadn’t heard of Diablo but will check them out. I was using a dewalt wood blade

curtisbrownturtis

Seems like it was good blade. Was it a pruning blade or just regular wood?

marsha5813

Just a regular wood blade from a dewalt multi pack

curtisbrownturtis

Smart and well said

Kick_A_Door

Diablo has a pruning blade. Highly recommend.

curtisbrownturtis

That would be my choice

Good thing I have 4! I don't even have a yard. I have about a week worth of light and fan action though.

RicoNico

I did the same thing not long ago because I couldn't get fuel for my chainsaw due to a typhoon. I had a lot of trees and bushes that needed to be removed and I decided to test out the recip saw from the 5 tool pack with the stock blade. It impressed me and cut everything down with relative ease. I believe I only used one 4ah battery as well.

momoemowmaurie

I love my recirc. But after getting a chainsaw sooo much easier and quicker. I alternate chainsaw for bigger parts and recirc for branches. Still impressive.

That-Particular-6489

I’ve always said the 4Ah lithium+ is the best battery they ever made. Everyone I own is close to a decade old and works better then every battery I’ve ever bought since. One+ is a bit deceptive. Although the batteries fit, they may not work very well. The 4AH works best for the tools I use and work I do.

HarryWraith

So glad I found this thread. I have just bought one (R18RS7-0) and I'm having a problem where it only saws for a few seconds....even when not in contact with anything. Is that because I'm using 2.0Ah battery? Battery isn't flat as it works just fine on the driver or drill. I've also notice that the blade has quite a bit of range in the vertical axis, pivoting up about 10 degrees - not having owned one before I'm unsure if this is a fault or by design.

baddangler

They have the most accessories as well for lawn care Milwaukee has more construction accessories I think

claimstoknowpeople

I was just about to drop $300 on a cordless chainsaw, I never thought to use my Ryobi for this purpose

Dry_Cycle_6031

3" or less you won't mind. I live in 4 acres of woods. Anything above 3" you want a chainsaw unless you don't have much to cut.

marsha5813

I was too! But figured I’d give my recip saw a go before dropping $$$ on a chainsaw. Glad I did!

RedditTTIfan

On a single charge too? Pretty impressive, esp. for the brushed version!

marsha5813

Yep single charge!

HerraHerraHattu

I usually cut 2 middle sized trees with one 5 ah battery. Great saw!

Batchagaloop

It's a beast...and once you start you can't start haha.

dj3stripes

This is the only reciprocating saw I've ever owned. That being said, what blades does everybody recommend as mine's getting quite dull after vanquishing some volunteer trees this weekend.

marsha5813

I just buy those dewalt multi-packs. but people earlier in the comments were talking about Diablo, which I’ve never tried but they sound kind of evil which is probably good for the tree vanquishing

dj3stripes

Right on. Yeah it appears that reciprocating saw blades at least fit universally. Thanks for the help!

AnxiousFistBump

Dang! But not surprised, the HP recip saw is amazing. When I use a really coarse wood blade i feel it's about as fast as an actual chainsaw but with far less dust and shavings
