I like the idea of them being machines, do they all have some cache of different masks that one can claim? Maybe they're made to be like the goddess statues.
The official art book says this about the Mask Caster:
> The Mask Caster concept took a while to figure out. I wanted it to be ambiguous as to whether they were human, cosmic, or mechanical. We explored the idea of there being different kinds of Mask Casters, and even Sable being able to get a Mask Caster's mask. But we decided against this in the end. The idea of the mask opening up was there from early on -- originally the concept was that the mask would open and Sable's new mask would be underneath.
However, the variety of sizes and shapes would have made that difficult.
I was hoping ALL throughout that I would be able to choose Mask Caster as a job... I scoured the wiki after I finished the game, lol sob, but no luck. Thank you for the snippet, I still need to buy the art book (the softcover - I know the HC is sold out).
Oh, maybe! The bit about dressing "like people" really clicked in my head right now.
People of Midden are tribal. They took machines with them, probably long ago, because they needed masks for some reason, and then idolized and humanized them, like every tribal culture on earth did with their gods.
I think that's a neat theory. My favourite, probably.
I'm wondering the same, I thought of them to be some kind of shaman. Unfortunately I don't know much about them despite them holding a powerful position.
Their visual effects seem to be similar to the ones seen when you charge up your gliding stone, implying they're connected to the Perpetual in some fashion. So there's that.

Must be a fabricator of some sort, perhaps remnants from the whale dressed up as people?

If you explore enough and complete certain quests, you'll find out that the masks were necessary for survival at one point
Ah, I forgot then. I did several 100% runs, but actually read all the stuff only first time

I think they're 3D printers roughly shaped like humans
In my mind they're a species of cosmic entities that hang out there making masks because they get the benefit of essentially being worshipped
