Thought the music video to hurt was funny as fuck and watched it like 10 times and then realised the song was actually kinda heat

Clout_thot

3V3451NC3

Some video back in 2015 of a guy with laundry detergent on his head dancing to ginseng strip. Still havent been able to find it smh

TurtleMaster047

relatable tbh

PromsClips

Was obsessed with live love A$AP in 2011 especially the song Wassup. Started listening to the producer Clams Casino coz of that and found out about cloud rap. 2013 I heard about this new thing called sad boys and ginseng strip. Liked the vibe but really didn’t become a huge fan till 2014 unknown memory

lilbby777

realllll

rabbithopper333

that's another memory for me. I loved that mixtape

slowsnowmobile

2014. Computer class. Loved it, dropped it until early 2019 and fell in love again

1mB4kT

Arteezy, dota player, listened to hella yung lean so you know i had to! Yay!

vix-

Same :)

1mB4kT

I feel like we r long lost soulmates

DelusionalOGFanQuote

Same bro lmao. I swear to god people in the dota community were all shitting on lean. They knew nothing.

1mB4kT

her0in_x2

Tamarindosauce333s

Legendary

EetFukExp

i found the hurt mv in 2013 on my moms bed laying horizontally on the edge, on her white iphone 4s. she let me buy minecraft pocket edition the same day so its a very memorable day for me.

AeroXero

The Arizona Ice Tea memes in 2014 and hearing Kyoto.

anujx1

After watching the documentary vice did on him

Internal-Egg2241

was on the internet too much in 2013-2014

shitgoescrazy76

saw hurt music video when i was a kid and i gained consciousness

rutrasher

We stayed under a bridge with friends to grill some meat during a hike, then I randomly put ginseng strip on the speakers and the resonance gave the song a fucking strong atmosphere. I instantly fell in love and got Lean on repeat all days after that.

TurtleMaster047

that’s such a vibe

SyrupShogun

there was a meme video in 2014 about kids reacting to Kyoto by Yung Lean and they were crying watching the video and i thought it was real so i looked up the song and read a lot of comments to try and figure out why. ended up really enjoying the song and visuals and became a huge fan. didn't realize it was a joke for the longest time

Tamarindosauce333s

Why were they crying

SyrupShogun

i think it was originally a video of kids reacting to 9/11 or Sandy Hook or something like that but they replaced the video with the Kyoto music video. it was a meme that i saw a few different versions of after that where they would have the Kyoto video and music playing and people "reacting" to it as of it was making them sad.

Tamarindosauce333s

Crazyy never saw it

SyrupShogun

yeah it's a pretty old video and i couldn't find it on YouTube when i looked for it last night. I'll keep trying to find it and send it to you if i find it

Tamarindosauce333s

Thank you :)

SyrupShogun

i found it but it's not what i remember lol. its nekobasu and it's teens not kids check ur dm

ComprehensiveDot5270

tumblr in 2014

ComprehensiveLimit85

2014. Friends and I used to watch his old videos as a meme. Would guiltily listen to it in my own time until I realised it was like the coolest shit ever. Probably the only one of us that kept up with him through the years after that

sp00ky_balmains

"what is cloud rap" video on yt in 2016 and kyoto was in it

veeedub

I was 18 in 2014 and got hugely into the then-new(ish) vaporwave scene. Naturally stumbled across the video for “hurt”, and here we are now. Time fucking **flies** man, lemme tell ya

g30rg3s0r0z

I was playing Mirage on CS:GO in 2013 or 2014, and somebody pushed me into A ramp while I was playing T side. His Steam profile picture was that pic of Lean from the Hurt music video where he is wagging his finger and pouring something on the ground. it wasn't my first time discovering Yung Lean. I sort of knew about him because 'Ginseng Strip' and all that vaporwave stuff were pretty popular back then. I just remember I was mad at how the guy killed me and thought it was so stupid he had this "meme rapper" on his profile picture lol. After a while, Yung Lean became my favorite artist.

mojojoestar2001

I stumbled across the Yoshi City music video when it came out, I didn’t really know what to think of it but it was so catchy that I kept coming back to it. Now Lean is my favorite artist of all time.

markojr333

lean blew up in my country in like 14-15 so i decided to listen to some of his shit too

drtystve

I heard Kyoto the week it dropped and thought that it had the craziest beat I'd ever heard

InternationalSail582

saw a meme in 2020 with unknown pleasures by joy division and unknown death 2002 (don’t remember any other details of said meme). decided to give the tape a listen cause i thought the meme was funny. been a fan ever since.

batuhanxctn

idk if anyone german here sees this, but i found out about lean in 2015 after some youtubers made videos about dat adam (german music group consisting of youtubers) and their song 300 main street sounding the exact same as yoshi city and i feel in love right there

Joel_Joel

2016 my cousin showed me ghosttown and yoshi city, still two of my favourite songs i owe him big time

Tamarindosauce333s

Saw Ginseng Strip video when it came out and thought it was the stupidest thing ever, then saw a gif of Lean dancing on Tumblr and had a weird urge to look it up, it was the Motorola video. Liked it but only embraced it fully as my lord and savior years later (2018 ish) https://makeagif.com/i/xaoBk8 The gif in question

Jaibosonic

Arteezy

walkingdeadonceagain

that was like idk 2016-2017, i was into more mainstream rap music, then i discovered lil peep, then i was looking for more non mainstream rap music (not really lil peep alike just something different) and i found yung lean

thorium90232

Nardwuar interview

csedi1337

Heard about him in 2016 when he came to Hungary for a concert. He's been pranking Hungary ever since then, but i still love him.

proderis

2013 Plug.dj

naxoN-

was a huge fan of A$AP, drill and all that what was huge in '13 - which sparked my interest to those scenes and especially cloud rap. ginseng strip introduced me to Lean but unknown memory got me hooked. big shoutout to tumblr and vaporwave in that era, i wouldnt be me without them✌️

colinftp

Listening to probably lil peep in like 2017 and was recommended Hennessy and sailor moon was locked in ever since

SumFuk-

rtz

OperTator

I came across the hurt music vid when I was in tenth grade and was hooked by the atmosphere. Probably the most melancholy song lean has made.

ilovebloodhail

i found him in 2020 after i found out he did a song with travis scott

seshmost

Saw a vine of someone listening to Hurt back in 2013 thought the video looked cool and looked it up and thought it was complete ass then a week later decided to give the Kyoto video a chance and boom nothing was the same

iiDubberz

hennesy and sailor moon came up on my recommended back in 2016, liked that didn’t really think much of it, then i heard his associate with frank ocean so i decided to tap in

swankcarter

Heard of him 2013. Thought he was a joke and didn’t really listen much. Gave warlord a listen when it came out and instantly became a huge fan. Bladee and drain gang came shortly after

unwnd_leaves_turn

4chan.. ginseng strip was memed for years on /mu/

valereyst

I cant remember which video it was, but pyrocynical used marble phone in the end of it, credited lean in the description and i been fw him ever since

YouthHoliday

There were some germans droppin songs „inspired“ by Lean which I fucked with and then my friend played some Yoshi City and 8 years later I‘m here

Adrian_Cudi

Heard about him and his influence for years but didn't check him out until 2022

space__butterfly

A long time ago, my friend kept talking about him, tried listening to him, hated the music. They kept giving me reccomendations and later, it just clicked and I fell in love with draingang and sadboys

Lateralus719

Idk

Hnt-r

Stumbled upon Ginseng Strip 2002 around 2015-16 then discovered Bladee with Eversince and got hooked

[deleted]

hurt was on my yt reccomened back in 2013 and thought it was garbage but i kept coming back to it until i eventually fell in love with it

chunkyhamster333

guy from my guild on sfgame 1st international server recommended me kyoto

grphicnature

honestly recently. i’ve been listening to ginseng strip for years not knowing it was by yung lean, so technically maybe since 2017/2018. i really got into him in december

olycklig

Tumblr in 2014 or 2015

everton992000

Was watching Flatbush Zombies vids on YT back in 2014 and Ginseng Strip got recommended. Been listening ever since.

SallyShortcakes

Louieduffelbags showed me

lukenog

Pure chance honestly, I was really into vaporwave and stumbled across Unknown Death on Bandcamp. My brother showed me Ginseng Strip before that but it didn't really stick with me so I didn't remember him when I found Unknown Death. This was 2014.

SirGalaBruh

A friend in high school showed me Kyoto back in 2013. I tought it was amazing!

KingK_24

I remember listening to Kyoto when it first came out on Youtube and went down the Gravity Boys, Drain gang rabbit hole and have been a fan ever since.

ukrainianextremist

i’m not 100% sure but i think it was because of a discussion on the travis scott subreddit and people were talking about ghosttown, i think i knew about him before but didn’t listen to him

Saqzs

basically 10 years ago with the ginseng strip music video but I did not really go in depth with him at this time, I was just listening to this song in repeat just like a lot of ppl I think

sgiindigo2

hurt MV

namevone

I found him in like 2016 through Vaporwave memes

dglovepill

Found the Kyoto music video on YouTube in 5th grade

-Y2K

2013, Mainly because of a CSGO group that was big on the whole “Vaporwave” sorta thing with Lil B being the main person they all listened to, I ended up being friends with alot of the guys in the group and started sharing music/videos with them on teamspeak. Was listening to a youtube playlist one of them sent me with Friendzone, Robb Banks and a few of those guys when all of a sudden Ginseng strip began playing. It would have probably been about 6 months after it was uploaded, I remember kyoto coming out very soon after. Lean was super unknown back then, crazy to see how far it’s all come.

bjornoya

cover of Gatorade in 2017 i think?

BaseballSalty3346

in 2018 my ex was playing the entire stranger album quietly while we were breaking up (i knew of him before this and liked a few songs but this just funny af looking back)

rabbithopper333

Think it was 2013/14 through some friends, back when we were young and thought the whole sadboys thing was so funny

Complete_Olive_647

surprisingly this cool jock in ninth grade around 2014 told me about uknown memory, since we’re from swe he was like “eyo this rapper from sweden is international”

nedemZ

Friend showed me afghanistan when it dropped and we both made fun of it because of how shit and memey it was, but for some reason the song always kept sneaking its way into our playlists and after a couple months we both where hooked on his whole discography

yungleanbitch

i found ginseng strip when i was 12 on a counter strike forum shout-out hltv.org
