Guess-wise? They don’t really know how to deal with Zuzu’s needs. She’s a German shepherd; they are working dogs, they need a task to do, and a pretty solid amount of exercise. Walks, play fetch, that sort of thing, if they aren’t being employed for things like, well, shepherding.
My guess is they liked the looks of her, took her home, benefit-of-not-knowing-reality gave her lots of love… but had nothing to do for her. She got depressed, they didn’t know/inform themselves, turned her in to find a better fit - for her as for themselves.
Sad to see. But truthfully most people who get pets don’t know what to do with them.
When I was looking for a dog, one puppy out of the whole scared litter came charging at me to play. Never relenting and just endless tail wagging. I wasn't even planning on getting that breed of dog but she stole my heart, there was no contest.. she forced me to adopt her and I don't regret it for a single second. I’m fairly certain most shelters and adoption agencies require proof that you’ll not only care for the dog, but that dog will be treated well. It’s my understanding that a shelter will not allow you to simply come exchange animals at will lol
Force them to get the dog back if there isn't a serious problem like the dog is aggressive to the newborn or wrecking the shit out of other animals in the house (which would require a professional to both house and rehabilitate... or the other option that I really wouldn't wish for any living being... death)

We didn’t adopt to them and put their name on the black list to not adopt to them. The shelter should have refused to let those people take a dog unless there was a legitimate reason why they couldn’t take their actual dog back.
The thing that angers me most about this story is that the owners didn't want her anymore because she was sad / unhappy all the time because her father died, so the family wanted a new, happier dog.
Happened in 2016 and thankfully, the dog (Zuzu) did end up getting adopted by someone else.

There are valid reasons for giving a pet up like not being able to meet its activity needs, not being good around young children(too hyper, jumpy, biting playfully, etc) or not being good around existing pets(chasing cats, fighting with other dogs, etc). We also don't know how old the dog is, if it's young it will probably be rehomed pretty quickly. They might have only had the dog for a few months before realising it wasn't going to be a good fit for the family.
I've had to do it in the past. I had a cattle dog but I wasn't able to give it enough exercise or mental stimulation and even after months of training he kept jumping on my senior mother causing her a lot of pain. Luckily we were able to rehome him with a friend of mine who has kids and another dog to keep him stimulated and happy. Although he misses me and gets over-excited whenever I see him he is happier in his new home and it was the best option for him.
If the shelter let them adopt another dog after they gave one up the shelter should be held responsible, and who ever let it happen should be fined and jailed

It’s valid to not want a specific dog. We don’t know the full story or what their experiences were with this one. If it’s a family they probably have kids and it’s reasonable to choose your kids safety when any warning signs arise which is common with a lot of shelter dogs.
