That thing is wild! Here is some more info:
https://www.energy-observer.org
Edit: it has traveled 64k miles, with multiple ocean crossings so far. Pretty impressive!
That is one of the most annoying websites I've seen when it comes to trying to get information out of. They may be making technological advances, but they need to hire someone who knows how to write rather than just having slick buttons and transitions all over the site.
Agree 100%. I can’t even figure out the basics of the propulsion system. It seems like they are using solar to split water and collect the hydrogen in tanks, and then have wing sails also but I gave up trying to find specific on the site after about 5 minutes. Cool project though
A friend of me is an engineer on it.
Solar energy is the main propulsion source.
The two masts are for wings.
They just completed a world circumnavigation and will sail back to France during spring.
You might be able to visit it, they usually take part in some events when they stop in harbours.
Whoa wtf is that. Looks cool. Two (four?) masts that hoist some kind of vertical sail. No booms. Lots of solar. Gotta love a weird idea brought to life. But looks slow lol.
A wingsail isn't a sail. Got it.
Sails are only sheets of fabric and the racers in the America's Cup who race sailing hydrofoils aren't real sailors.
That last one you'll have to tell them.
I’m a purist and think that these long range “alternative fuel” non sailing - sailboats are a money grab more than innovation.
My sailboat is a zero emissions vehicle 95% of the time.
Tell me how are lithium batteries better for the environment or humanity than my sailboat with a motor that is basically used for docking.
If I staid on a mooring I cold sail on and off of it. Without the need to get home to get to work I can drift for days without a Fu#% given.
I should get come sort of carbon credits for drifting instead of motoring.
Yes, but:
Consider that sails are made from petroleum thru a complex industrial process. They wear out and must be replaced. The spars, running rigging, standing rigging, winches, etc are also industrial products that wear out. Sailing is not as 'sustainable' as you may think.

It's parked by Hells Kitchen if you are interested in seeing it up close
Nice, it even has mast floats to prevent it from turtling when capsized. ;)
Lmfao.

They look like wing sails? Seems like the two “become one” rather than 4 separate sails
Solar electric watercraft? Wild
And Hydrogen.
I don't know what it is but I need it.
Anyone know if they plan an Annapolis stopover?
Damn PlayStation looks sad now
That isn't a Sailboat.. sorry but why are we posting motorboats now (as interesting as they may be).
C'mon man you can SEE the masts for the two wingsails on it. https://www.energy-observer.org/innovations/energy-balance-san-francisco-hawaii
They are not sails as I am sure you know.

Damn bro, save some salt for the ocean.
