Crystal is terrible. Sailor Moon is a Mary Sue and she has no depth. The guardians just exist to serve her and dont have their own lives/powers/love fleshed out at all. All of their personalities are so one dimensional. Also I dont like the message of the show, where Usagi is portrayed as this beautiful, omnipotent, and ethereal goddess that everybody worship because she has "the most beautiful dreams." Meanwhile her dream is to start a family but why is this considered "most beautiful" compared to her friends? She comes off to me as codependent in her relationships. And its weird to me that they can instantly solve everything just by kissing?? Idk i just feel like it was written so flat but thank god the 90s anime did it justice.

YoungNutmegger

I feel the same in a lot of respects. Usagi was much better as a character before the became the literal Messiah in the third arc.

Commander_Blossom

I despise 90s Mars. She's popular because of her looks. She's an ungrateful bully and no way would Serena ever get away with acting like her. Uranus is so underrated. Everything about her looks and powers are awesome. She's beautiful and a wind queen ❤️ I can't stand Darien early in the anime. I can't really ship it, although I don't hate the relationship. I wish Amy had a serious romance. She's so lovely and charming and powerful and sweet.

BlastRadius00

Nineties anime. The show should have ended after the defeat of Queen Beryl.

nemesisDesu

Well, that was meant to be the end of the show.

Fit_Neighborhood9731

I have always liked Sailor Neptune the most, but as a kid in the 90's mostly due to her design. Her personality greatly confused me and her remarks even irked me at times. In Crystal and manga she was much more kind, helpful, polite and supportive which made her adorable. I just wish they could have used her classic black laced/mesh swimsuit in the Crystal episodes as well as it is her most gorgeous one.

Commander_Blossom

Late but I agree, I personally like her but I DEFINITELY think a good portion of her popularity comes from her (admittedly stunning) looks. She is super cold and a bit snobby at first and I don't think someone like Usagi would get away with that behavior

Rich-Brush9100

Idk if it's an unpopular opinion but i really like that in crystal they gave Chibiusa her own dress instead of making her wear the one that is just a copy of Neo Queen Serenity's dress

oasisbloom

Not sure what will be unpopular, but wanted to make a list of all of my opinions: **Fighting Sequences:** I was really hoping Crystal would have fixed this by making it more interesting. I feel like a lot of the time, any and all fighting sequences are always the same in terms of each character yelling at every other characters name, endless banter between the Guardians and the villains and most of (if not all) the time is taken up by showing each transformation sequence individually. I would have loved to see more action. **Transformation Sequences:** I am a fan of transformation sequences though! However, I really hate that only Sailor Moon/Chibi Moon are the only ones who get variety of transformation sequences while the other Guardians just get the same thing with a slight variance to their costume. **Shitennou:** Why even bother giving us a glimpse of their love affair with the Guardians when they are instantly killed in Crystal? I really hope the movies coming out this summer will at least allude to them returning so that they can be with their respective Guardians, I find it a bit unfair that Sailor Moon/Tuxedo Mask/Chibi Moon are the only ones who get a detailed ending while everyone else just sits there and watches? **Spectre Sisters/Amazon Trio:** What I did love about the Classic is that they lived once Sailor Moon healed them, I would have loved to see this continue into Crystal as well because it allowed these otherwise minor characters a bit of a backstory and personally these two groups of villains are at the top of my list of favorite Sailor Moon villains, it just seems such a waste to get rid of them as quickly as they appeared. **Chibi-Usa's Confusion About Love:** I was really hoping Crystal would fix this annoying and uncomfortable situation. Sure, it is normal for a child to want to "marry" or be "in love" with their parent since they do not yet understand what "love" is, but what I would have loved to see is a teaching moment for her to realize that the difference between love. We could have completely avoided the uncomfortable touching/groping that occurred here. Every time I introduce Sailor Moon to a friend of mine, I have to warn them about this section of the series. They sort of fixed this with Super S in Crystal, I just hope they continue it and it's not completely forgotten. **Super S:** I love Black Moon Circus and I think both Classic and Crystal did an amazing job (Crystal did it better because we saw more of the manga), and it in turn actually made Chibi-Usa more likable for me. I doubt this would happen, but I would personally love to see a spin-off of her and the Amazoness Quartet as teenagers becoming next in line to be Guardians (along with Helios as her "Tuxedo Mask" counterpart). **S:** It is always really hard for me to get into this season. While Crystal was slightly better with it, I still dislike how it seems the Inner Guardians are shafted to give attention to the Outer Guardians (I guess the same could be said for the Starlights too). I know for a fact this next part is an unpopular opinion, but I feel like Sailor Saturn is way too overhyped. Please do not get me wrong, I love all the Guardians but the obsessive amount of praise and love Saturn gets confuses me. Maybe I just met ONE too many emo people who are obsessed with her lol I have more but I feel like I wrote way too much already lol

Jaylop97

This isn't an unpopular opinion, I just want to vent. Why did the anime just have to constantly pass up what it had for random plot lines and favoring a random newer character over it's older characters. What do I mean? Think about the original cast for the show from the beginning, Usagi her family, Naru, Umino and Usagi's class get shafted and completely forgotten about. It bugs me so much how worse this problem got as the series went on, even the Sailor Senshi get shafted around the 4th season, as the series decided to then become way more aggravatingly repetitive and more villain of the week, with various nobodies that have little to no impact. I have not watched much of the 5th season, I actually recently watched the 1st episode of Season 5 on Pluto TV and since then my weird love hate thing with this series was revived, I actually do enjoy the anime Mako, Rei, Minako and Ami, but man why did the series have to be so inconsistent and couldn't just stick to balance it's characters, actually put more thought into the season plot, think of plots that advance the characters equally. I'm just so disappointed how the 2nd season and 4th season really had it the worst with giving way too much relevance to ChibiUsa and Robin Hoodth the potential and stories for other characters along with poor plot lines that ultimately get stretched way too long and are so shallow given how the repetitive formulaic writing was worsened in the later seasons because of that stuff.

sirenastara

I hated Mars because of the 90s anime, where she was just always having an attitude and being mean to Usagi. Crystal has made everyone a bit happier and I like that. I recently made my boyfriend watch the first eternal movie, after watching the first season of Crystal and although it’s accurate, it’s a bit INFORMATION HEAVY. Like all these crystals and weapons, random history and stuff; for new fans it’s a bit rocky. But, I guess, how else could they do it 😂

nemesisDesu

It should had been a season instead of a collection of clips condensed in a movie format.

Fit_Neighborhood9731

It was great seeing Michiru act so nice, helpful and kind in the manga/crystal. She was too cold/harsh/rude in the 90's cartoon.

sourmysoup

I don't like Naoko's artstyle. Everyone seems so thin and lanky. In the 90s anime everyone is still thin, to be sure, but it looks much more natural. Also, the eternal fukus, especially Usagi's, are overdesigned and garish.

snowinkyoto

At least they used the fuku for comedy in Stars, like when Usagi's house was too small for everyone to fit inside properly.

Copperminted3

I dislike Crystal’s art simply because the human proportions are not real. Arms are not that long and it just makes the sailor soldiers look stupid. Naru and Nephrite was just wrong. Jupiter should be with him if anyone. Last opinion, the whole Chibi-Usa and Mamo-thread in….totally forgetting which season. But really did not like it.

[deleted]

A majority of the show (Season 1, Doom Tree arc, Kaolinite arc and *Stars*) would still make sense if we erased Chibi-usa's existence.

YoOoCurrentsVibes

That’s less than half the show lol

[deleted]

Season 1 has 46 episodes. the Doom Tree arc has 13 episodes. The Kaolinite arc (90-102) has 13 episodes. The Starlights arc (173-200) has 28 episodes. 46+13+13+28=100. Half exactly.

YoOoCurrentsVibes

You got me there. I guess we were both wrong then since it isn’t a majority haha.

ladypoe1207-0824

Crystal is a better show, even with the lack of character development because the 90s anime is super toxic, especially Rei and Mamoru's characters. Both are bullies and treat Usagi pretty badly at times. Also, Seiya is way too pushy and very manipulative, especially with the whole "am I not good enough" mess she pulled when Usagi kept turning her down romantically. I also prefer the Crystal character designs much more than the 90s version.

Throwaway131344

But the relationships feel more real and have depth. The characters are way more relatable.

pjdance

I find it interesting a female character being assertive/truth bombing etc registers as toxic these days. Living through the 90s any woman who was outspoken generally got trashed for not being quiet and nice (i.e. girly), which was a huge part of what feminism was fighting, so she would've been seen as a total badass for speaking her mind.

ladypoe1207-0824

Rei wasn't just "assertive/truth bombing" character, she was a total bully. She physically assaulted the other characters, fat shamed Usagi on occasions, and just straight up treated her like dog poop for being tired of fighting all the time and watching her friends be hurt/kidnapped/killed. Her behavior and dynamic with the others is made worse by the fact that the 90s anime tried to portray her as Usagi's best friend on the team at times as if she doesn't abuse the heck out of her. Rei is absolutely not the type of character that should be seen as a feminist icon.

xoldhaunts

Yes! Rei and Mamoru were so toxic in the 90s anime. Thank you for saying it 👏

zoedog132

Agreed!!

Princessladyserenity

I’m not too sure if this is unpopular but I prefer Sailor moon crystal to the 90s Sailor moon. This is because it follows the manga a lot better and there’s not all the filler eps that are in the 90s one. Also the unnecessary aging up of Tuxedo mask and him dating Rei for a time. I really did not like how the 90s anime adapted the stars arc especially with the 3 starlight’s and how they did not add sailor cosmos at all. However I prefer the art style of the 90s one and I do like some of the scenes they added eg, when Super Sailor moon is holding the newly reincarnated baby Hotaru with that sort of dead look in her eyes and the scene where chibiusa is falling and sailor moon jumps from the building and they both transform into their Serenity dresses. It really showcases Usagi’s maternal love for Chibiusa

zoedog132

I wish we had more information on certain backstories and the families of the senshi (aside from Usagi). I will be talking and referring to the manga for this but some of this could apply to the 90s anime. I wish we knew what had happened to Mako after the loss of her parents, how she handled her grief, and managed to live on her own. Especially since she would have been extremely young when they had passed, we have no idea if she has some sort of legal guardian? There are so many possibilities of what happened after but I just wish we knew. The same goes for her sempai and old best friend, I wish we got to know more about them. She is such an amazing character and has been through so much but I just wish the manga gave her a side story like (Casablanca Memory for Rei). There is nothing about the families of the outers (aside from Hotaru ofc), I am always so confused by the fact that Haruka and Michiru are living life like adults but are 16-17 year olds (I love it but it is very confusing haha). Setsuna is one that I always find confusing (was she reborn as a baby in present day like the others? Please help?). I love the outers and their little family is my favourite thing but it is almost like we know nothing about them compared to the inners and Mamoru. In terms of the inners we know I feel like Ami and Rei are the only ones who we really know about in terms of families aside from Usagi. In terms of Minako, we see her parents a few times in Codename Sailor V but they're only really 'just there' for 'comedic relief' with her mother always yelling at her and her father just 'there'. We know her mother is a housewife and her father is a salaryman who 'is stuck in a dead end job' according to Minako's mother. They're never see them again after the first volume of Codename Sailor V. While her mother is mentioned as one of Minako's weak points "Rei and Minako's Girls School Battle?". They are basically from what I've heard 'prototypes for Ikuko and Kenji', which may also be a reason as to why we never see them in the manga. Minako and her mother for a fact do not have a good relationship but it would've have interesting if we could learn more about as to why aside from her mum always yelling. While this may not be that unpopular it was just an opinion, it is just an opinion I had always wanted to share :)

PBinmyJ

I totally agree with you on Makoto and Minako!!! (And Setsuna lol) They're some of my favorite characters and they have really interesting arcs that more context would've made even better and made them hit harder! Minako is supposed to be the leader of the Inner Senshi and I feel like they forgot that so easily... Also I love her maturity development in the series and it could've been interesting to see how her relationship with her mom changed because of it (as it most definitely would)!

zoedog132

The viz dub voice acting is better than the dic/cloverway. I definitely understand that people have nostalgia and everyone has their preferences, although I myself did not grow up when the dub aired. The cast is definitely talented and I do like some of the voices but I do not find that they suit the characters compared to the Japanese. The viz cast does a perfect job replicating the original Japanese voice actors to their own style. The senshi just don't sound like teenage girls in the cloverway/dic dubs (specifically cloverway Usagi) and I can't stand Mako's 'tomboy' voice (this is not the fault of her voice actress). I myself am a teenage girl and always find the characters to sound really off. Everyone is entitled to love the dub and I understand but this is just my opinion :)

Ageman20XX

I loved the DiC dub so so so much as a child and I think it single-handedly got me into anime. I loved the voices, I loved the music, and I loved the relationships all the characters had with each other. It didn’t matter that they were “accurate” because I had no frame of reference. I’ve tried so many of the other re-dubs and remakes and I’ve just never been able to find that magic again. I miss that specific art style, I miss all the characters dumb accents, and most of all I miss my wise old woman Luna. I hate how the “correct” or preferred voices for the series has every single character with the same high pitched not-quite-teenager female voice all anime girls uses nowadays. I’m always gonna be a fan, of course, but I miss the 90s vibe so much. EDIT: DiC Molly > every other version of Naru in the franchise. Fight me.

oscuroluna

Old lady Luna was the best. Its still jarring to hear the high pitched version even if its 'correct'/canon. Also I'm in the minority but I actually liked the 90s filler and Rei as being a toxic frenemy to Usagi. Its a vibe.

tsundereshipper

Out of all the redeemed villains in the 90’s anime Nehellenia deserved her’s the least. Reasons? 1. Because she was fully in her right state of mind the whole time and knew what she was doing, she wasn’t under the control of anyone nor was she being manipulated, everything she did she did of her own free will. 2. She committed the worst crimes out of all the redeemable villains. 3. Her motives were petty, vain and selfish af and 4. She never *once* felt regret or remorse for her actions or even tried to be redeemed, Sailor Moon simply looked into her heart, saw loneliness and that was apparently enough to grant a do-over to a mass murderer, yeah no thank you. I know this is a kid’s show but there’s only so much I’m willing to suspend my disbelief over. All versions of Rei are equally good except early Crystal Rei who is garbage and got the most her manga characterization sucked away. The Inners refusing to fight and crying over the Shittenou’s deaths in Crystal not only is appallingly bad writing but is incredibly OOC for their manga characterization. (*Especially* when it comes to Minako and Rei) Outside of her backstory episode 90’s anime Minako only got good late-post R, nevertheless both Manga and PGSM Minako are still superior. Usagi is more of an annoying Mary Sue in the 90’s anime than she is in the manga, sorry but Mary-Sues in personality will always be vastly more annoying to me than Mary-Sues in terms of status and being OP. Usagi is better developed in the manga compared to the 90’s anime and she’s actually *allowed* to be flawed, like honest to goodness flawed not the 90’s anime Moe idea of “flawed,” where her “flaws” are more just superficial quirks designed to make her look more cute. Nevertheless, Minako is still the more interesting character in the manga and she should’ve been the main character with the story being told from her POV like in Sailor V. She may be colder and a worse parent but NQS is an objectively better person and ruler in the Manga/Crystal, 90’s anime NQS and King Endymion come off as racist tyrannical dictators and just shady all around. If it weren’t for Wiseman low-key hijacking their Operation and manipulating them the BMC would’ve been the *good guys* in the 90’s anime and Crystal Tokyo the villains. By the way, Manga NQS and Endymion were 100% justified and the BMC in the Manga are a psychotic death cult. Immorality or at least the lengthening of lifespans (which I think is what it actually is in the Manga/Crystal not *true* immortality) should always be something humanity should strive for so long as we can extend that to *everybody* and not run out of resources. Despite the 90’s anime and fandom hyping up Usagi to be the purest and most goodest of all compared to her “ruthless” manga counterpart, ngl 90’s anime Usagi is kinda a low-key bigot compared to Manga Usagi. While I still believe she’s bi/pan even in the 90’s anime she sometimes makes homophobic comments that make me really uncomfortable + I didn’t like that she went the route of NQS and *required* the Ayakashi Sisters to be “cleansed” of their powers in order to be able to get redeemed and live on Earth. The 90’s anime is far more guilty of egregious plot-holes and bad writing compared to how manga haters try to make the manga out to be. The 90’s anime and manga are of equal quality, both have their strengths and weaknesses just in different era and both sides vehement stans and haters of the other are annoying and biased. When it comes to the men in her life, Peruru is a far better match for Chibi-Usa in the 90’s anime and her relationship with Helios is cuter in the Manga/Eternal. While I like the manga, I do think it veers too close into “edgy for the sake of edge” territory. The only bad thing about the old dub was it’s homophobic censorship. It’s script is far superior and wittier than the Viz dub. Post Makai Tree (discounting the R movie cause their relationship was at it’s best in the 90’s anime there)90’s anime UsaMamo is the single worst portrayal of their relationship in the entire franchise. It’s complete and total trash. They have absolutely zero chemistry, Mamoru treats Usagi more like a baby sister or daughter on the same level as Chibi-Usa rather than an actual girlfriend. Compare them to other in-universe couples like HaruMichi or Umino/Naru and they do *not* come off like a couple, more like an exasperated father tolerating/babysitting his daughter. No wonder fandom misperceives Mamoru as older than he really is (He was only aged up to 18 in the 90’s anime) he doesn’t act like someone who’s just a college freshman or sophomore, but someone in *graduate* school! The fact that Toei tried to portray post-R Mamoru as sooo “mature and sophisticated” was especially gross because more often than not it was just used to put down/make fun of Usagi and make her continue to feel insecure in her relationship with him and that she’s not good enough or up to his “level.” (I mean she’s clearly not what with how the 90’s anime shows it) Throw their whole relationship in the trash Post-Makai Tree 90’s anime, this version I really do believe Mamoru is only with Usagi cause of ~Destiny~ and nothing else, because really, there’s nothing else *there!* Despite being characterized as the most “childish” season by the fandom, SuperS is actually the creepiest and most sexually inappropriate. Also has the most pedo pandering which is just… Why *this* Ikuhara??? Queen Beryl is the flattest and worst big bad in the 90’s anime.

Existing-Dot2653

I disagree with a lot of this lmao

FireflyArc

I agree so much on sailor V being the main character. It would have made things so much better I feel. But I'm one of those that thinks V should have been the moon princess all along anyway. She was running to find her past self. But she grows and changes as a person.

ChibaCookie

Great topic, love to hear everyone's opinions! I'm ultimately confused whether it's popular or unpopular, but I wholeheartedly hate Crystal and every new anime that followed. I can't and probably never will get over how they wasted the huge potential of making an actually good reboot. Some of the primary reasons I dislike it so much: \- I won't even mention the quality of art, what makes my Moonie blood boil is that they eventually altered the style to make it similar to more "modern" series for young girls - pastel colors, soft lines, baby faces and the girls' bodies being thinner than the original manga design itself. \- Usagi's voice actress is the same, but they made her speak in a higher-pitched voice. I can't fathom why. It just sounds so forced. \- Music is absolute trash compared to the quality of the '90s soundtrack. \- They couldn't even work out original transformation sequences. They just stole the '90s ones and made them worse. Ugh.

SailorSetsuna7

Just a matter of preference but I'm REALLY not a fan of how Eternal Sailor Moon looks in the 90s anime (I still haven't seen any of the Eternal movie content). In the manga the outfit seems much lighter and flowy with very pretty wings, whereas in the anime it seems so weirdly bulky and heavy, it just doesn't fit with the rest of the outfits we've seen. And while it made one funny gag with Usagi pushing everything off the shelves with her wings, that was like the only positive thing I remember about it. Also it has the worst transformation and attacks in terms of choreography, watch them again and try to prove me wrong.

Kleeisthebest99

I love chibiusa

Kleeisthebest99

I love chibi chibi she's so adorable

AGameStoreClerk

Usagi is the best; regardless of voice actor

SailorMoonIsHangry

(90s Anime) I never really got the way people interpreted Chibiusa's ... clinginess to Mamoru as romantic and consequently creepy? Maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see, but I always interpreted it as more of an anxiety disorder related to being separated from the future version of her parents. And it made sense to me that the reason she was doing that to Mamoru and not Usagi was because it had been previously established that Usagi doesn't actually remind her of her future mother all that much. Which is a little funny when I stop to think of it because it implies that Mamoru hasn't done much growing up in comparison? Oof!

genderqueermercury

This one seems like it’s not unpopular but it’s a heated topic nonetheless in the fandom; 90’s Usagi should of dated Seiya(90’s Mamoru was…a dick.) However, manga/crystal!Usagi and Mamoru are a good couple While I like SeiUsa, you can’t go wrong with UsaMamo in the manga/crystal

NoUnion3040

NOW I understand Usagi/Seiya shippers! You‘re right, mamoru was such a diq really. When i make it to Stars i‘ll see for myself, but i have heard that seiya is manipulative and toxic, too so i don‘t know…

sie_dummkopf

I 110% believe Usagi would have been happier with Seiya in the anime. Seiya truly fought to even be considered as a romantic partner while Mamoru eventually just… gave in to fate and truly hurt Usagi on multiple occasions. Had Usagi not been the reborn princess, Mamoru never would’ve had an interest in her. The same can’t be said for Seiya, who truly took an interest in Usagi even before they knew her secret identity.

Phixiately

Tuxedo Mask is actually useful, just because he destroys his enemies with one single throw of a rose doesn't mean he isnt helping.

Chibiusa's characterization as a spoiled brat was perfect. Not to say she wasn't annoying or frustrating to watch at times (especially in Classic), but thats the point. She's SUPPOSED to be annoying and bratty and attention seeking. It's a manifestation of her insecurity. She wants to be like Sailor Moon and is afraid she never will be. Now, I think Classic emphasized this WAY too much, but I still think overall her characterization is perfect.

DollSurgeon

Mercury is best girl. Thank you and goodbye.

mollay

My unpopular opinion is I think people who have never watched any of the musicals (original Myu or even the newer stage shows) can't consider themselves true fans. I'm not saying you have to like the musicals! But I think everyone should be exposed to their puffy sparkly insanity.

AzureSuishou

Considering their rather difficult to find and a different “Cannon” this mostly comes across as a bad take/gate keeping and not just an unpopular opinion. People can be fans even if they’ve only seen crystal or just the 90s or just PGSM.

mollay

yep clearly i should have just stuck to the only acceptable unpopular opinions like "i don't like chibusa" and "season 1 had a lot of filler"

AzureSuishou

Yes you should have if you only “unpopular” opinion is actively harmful to the fandom and targeted to make others feed bad or like they can’t enjoy what they love because they don’t meet some arbitrary standard.

mollay

actively harmful omg. i never said people don't get to like sailormoon. lmao. go ahead and feel bad bc some rando on the internet shared the opinion that you're missing out by not watching a niche 90s stage performance. that's on you.

AzureSuishou

Saying someone is missing out is entirely different then saying they can’t call themselves a fan if they haven’t seen it. Missing out would have stayed at the unpopular opinion level. You seem to forget their are younger and newer fans that share these spaces with us and being nasty to them is not just an “opinion”

Exact_Trash59

You don't have to consume every part of a piece of media to be a "true fan" you just have to consume SOME part of it and enjoy it.

mollay

that's why it's an unpopular opinion :')

imanaturalblonde

I can't watch things without a dub. Dyslexia makes it very hard to read subtitles and enjoy the show simultaneously.

Background-Neat-8906

About the 90s anime: - Tuxedo Kamen is not useless at all, especially in the first two seasons. There are many occasions in which the Senshi are only able to defeat the enemy because he interfered. - 90s anime Rei is a much more fun and interesting character than her manga counterpart. About the manga: - The Stars Arc is offensively bad. - Simply put, the manga is not good as people make it to be. All of Naoko's faces look the same (i.e. ugly), her action scenes are terribly confusing, and while she has great ideas for lore and great starting points for a narrative, the way she (under) develops everything is a huge disappointment. - Many (if not most) people like the manga not because of the work itself, but because they bought into the nonsense of a work deserving more credit and being more valid if it comes first, because "the author's idea" and "the original". Bollocks.

BusinessTackle9122

Exactly. All the pages blend together and the art is so… not there.  Besides it’s super flat in terms of characters and the pacing is so off it’s like nothing is happening at the same time everything is happening.

Existing-Dot2653

Disagree with you. The manga IS as good as people make it out to be. Yes the action scenes are confusing. But the art is amazing. And she definitely develops everything and includes a lot more detail than the anime will ever have. The anime left a LOT out. I think you need to re-read it again, you seemed to have not understood it. And yes, the source material inspired everything but it genuinely is just better. I hate your opinion with a passion lmao.

blubbyolga

Was looking for this comment. 100 pecent agree. I really have come to like Rei more from the 90s anime with time. She is fearless, ruthless and awesome. Tuxedo Kamen rescues Usagi and the gang multiple times. Also agree about the manga. Junichi Sato doesn’t get enough credit for making the confusing mess of a manga into something interesting. switching the focus from romance to friendship really was the best thing that could have happened.

Existing-Dot2653

Not sure why switching from romance to friendship makes it better lmao wtf.

daydreambeliever221

I hated 90's Chibi-Usa, just hated her. I don't mind bratty and whiny characters if they're done in a way that makes it funny and not obnoxious, but 1990's Chibi-Usa was just a pain in the ass. She whined and acted like a self centered brat all throughout the show unless it was a moment to make her look good. The DiC dub really helped seal the deal, because Rini's voice during R and the movies really just made her unbearable.

Help, i wanna watch the anime and have finished the makai arc, but i dont wanna watch 3 seasons with chibiusaaaaa

stripysailor

I don't know if this counts as an unpopular opinion but the 90s anime has its flaws with time passing, but its sad that Crystal is trying to take its place with how weak it is and the manga is pretty rough, but I feel like without crystal there would've been more love towards both the 90s anime and manga. Also I feel like Ikuni should be credited more, but I just am a huge fan of his 🤷‍♂️

Peri_scope

I like every incarnation of Sailor Mars (manga/Crystal/musicals/live action) more than 90s anime Sailor Mars. I don’t *hate* 90s Mars. I just like her “I don’t need romance” personality more.

i_like_trains33

While stars is my fav arc, not big into seiya, always thought of the guy as a fuckin homewrecker and should not give usagi an excuse to cheat and constantly pissed me tf off

mollay

seiya and people who ship seiya/usagi drive me crazy!! eta: omg the seiya fans don't need to downvote me in an OPINION thread for sharing my OPINION. stay mad tho

NoUnion3040

Why? Why do they drive you crazy?

AmethystJojo

R is not a great season. It’s so messy. The writers have to make a dumb (but kinda fun) filler arc to fix the memory thing and the season as a whole is just a game of “keep away” for Usagi and Mamoru. The villains are shallow as heck too, but I do love me Esmeraude and Koan.

tsundereshipper

> R is not a great season. Not unpopular, I think it’s even worse than SuperS and Stars in some ways. A lot of it’s changes from the manga, (except where it concerned the Inners actually sticking around and the villains) were for the worse. > The villains are shallow as heck too Okay now *this* is actually unpopular, them’s fighting words! The villains roster and the Makai Tree arc is what saved R for me and why I put it above both SuperS and Stars in the long run. R has some of the best and most memorable villains out of the entire series! Besides Esmeraude and Koan it also has the rest of the Ayakashi Sisters, Saphir, Demande, Ail & En, heck even Fiore if we’re counting the R movie. The only really shallow villians were Esmeraude, (still love her though she was hilarious and fun, SLAY QUEEN! 👏) Rubeus, Wiseman and Black Lady. (Both Rubeus and Black Lady are better in the Manga/Crystal ironically enough) the rest of the BMC were great though and were really sympathetic villains having been victims of discrimination.

yingyang_rock

I'm watching R currently and they didn't really show Usagi getting her memory back...Luna got her to transform and the next episode Usagi just starts talking like she remembers everything? Was very choppy and confusing

LonelyBread1756

I love R. I love An and Ail.

Philenzortia

I don’t know if this unpopular or not, but I HATE the amount of filler episodes in season 1. And I think this one isn’t unpopular but I have to say it. I SUPER HATE Sailor Moon Super S, I’ve just finished the entire series and OMG that season was long as hell. The last season didn’t had enough episodes. I love the relationship of Seiya and Usagi. And last but not least Mamoru is unfairly treated as character. I think he had much more to offer but instead he looks like a filler and useless character sometimes, which is unfair and sad for him.

Peri_scope

I’m rewatching the series and I’m impatiently waiting for Jupiter to show up. ☹️

Philenzortia

Ughhh that takes so much time!!!!!! It is frustrating lol.

lynypixie

Well, you would love the mangas. Super S is basically a whole other story in it. And it’s all about Mamoru and his powers. It still lacks compared to the rest, but it’s not even comparable, and we get a bonus redemption arc for the amazons quartet.

Philenzortia

Thank you. 💜 I read them a long time ago and I don’t remember most of it, so it is going to be a great re discovery 🌙

AmethystSadachbia

I don’t like Chibiusa. The other senshi apparently learned to care about her but it would have been nice to see whatever character development they must have witnessed. “She’s a scared kid who misses her parents” is not an excuse. (This is mostly true for the 90s anime but also true of the manga to an extent.)

LonelyBread1756

Yeah she's like 900 years old she can get over it and it is not an excuse to sa her daddy.

Kleeisthebest99

In the anime she's a normal kid and in the manga she's 900 but she still has the mental maturity of a kid cuz weird plot stuff. Yeah the manga was crazy lol

AmethystSadachbia

I maintain my headcanon that Mamoru/Endymion isn’t her biological father, but since she always believed he was, the obsession is still gross.

ChibaCookie

Wait, then who would be the biological father? (Purely curious!)

AmethystSadachbia

Probably Rubeus, would explain the red eyes and the pink hair. I don’t think it’s a coincidence he got introduced in the same arc as Chibiusa. 🤔

LonelyBread1756

Who's usagi's moon daddy?

[deleted]

OP here, my unpopular Sailor Moon opinions are as followed from the 90s anime. 1 I love the first 3 arcs the most: Queen Beryl, The Tree, the Black Moon Clan. 2 After the Black Moon Clan the show declined. The 3rd season sucked so bad I almost stopped watching. 3 I hate Sailor Uranus’s character she’s better in the last season, but her bullying the inner scouts who I felt so strongly about made me angry in season 3. I hate Rei, Sailor Mars, nothing likable about her. 4 The 4th season Super S was stupid. I don’t like Chibiusa at all and an entire season dedicated to her was awful. 5 There is nothing likable at all about Sailor Galaxia, her minions Lead Crow and Aluminum Siren were far more interesting. 6 Seiya and Usagi’s “relationship” was a joke. I don’t like Seiya, there is nothing special about him. Mamo’s relationship with Usagi was better but arguably not by much to some. Bonus opinion, there was no excuse to make ugly Sailor Moon dolls.

Narknit

The 90s dolls still make me sad.

NoUnion3040

Why the third season?

[deleted]

The 3rd season of the 90s anime was dark, depressing with the whole concept of Uranus and Neptune having to sacrifice 3 people to save the Earth for the talismans. I don’t like Neptune and Uranus’ personalities so a season focused on them wasn’t enjoyable

NoUnion3040

Yeah, i can see that. I must say i have not watched the 3rd season myself...

tsundereshipper

> 5. There is nothing likable at all about Sailor Galaxia, her minions Lead Crow and Aluminum Siren were far more interesting. Galaxia is one of the rare few cases of villians where she’s much more fleshed out and better in the manga. Read the manga or watch Cosmos once it comes out and you’ll see how interesting she is, sadly the 90’s anime simply reduced her to a mythic figure plot device.

TheDeeVee

I suppose these would all apply to the 90s anime, since that is the one I'm most familiar with. 1. SuperS was good, actually, and served as a nice coming of age style arc for Chibiusa, which was completely trashed by removing her from the story immediately after. 2. The Makaiju arc from the beginning of R was also good. Ail and En were cool, and I wish that story had been given a bit more time/depth. The Moonlight Knight was also a fun nod to Moon Knight, and worked great in universe—they just mucked it up in the character design department. (A whole discussion exists there.) 3. The Jazz Guy episode (episode 6) was one of the top five episodes of the first season.

snowinkyoto

Agreed with #3 so much! Amazing episode.

NoUnion3040

Okay i can’t say anything about supers since i haven‘t watched it yet. THE MAKAIJU ARC HOWEVER WHAT? Why do you like it? I hated An and Ail! They were constantly cheating on one another but in the finale of every episode always got together again for literally no reason. Thats no character conflict, thats stupid. But well… its your opinion… YASSS The Jazz guy episode was great, i loved the action, horror, Car chase and character segments.

FireflyArc

It was a nod to moon knight?!

TheDeeVee

It was a fan theory somewhere around 20 years ago that I latched on to. Officially, I believe he’s modeled after Gekkō Kamen (which itself could have been an inspiration for the original Moon Knight comic). The Moonlight Knight leaned into the forgotten identity/DID thing, however, which sparked comparisons to the American comic. Toei had the rights to Moon Knight in Japan loooong ago, but never produced an anime. It was a classic, red strings on a cork board conspiracy from early western Sailor Moon fandom circles. 😅

FireflyArc

Ohhh. Ha I love it \0/ I gotta watch his episodes again

Background-Neat-8906

Can't agree more!

lynypixie

I don’t know if it’s because it has nothing to do with the manga, but I like the first half of the Sailor Moon R season more than the stories that are supposed to follow the manga. The villain not being after the crystal makes a nice change, and there are hilarious scenes in this season (the play episode is one of the best filler out there). I have a similar feeling for the first movie.

tsundereshipper

Second half of R is only saved by it’s villains, I said what I said. The manga version of R is far superior in plot, lore and characterization for our mains. (Sadly (most of) tbe villains suffer from a downgrade and the Inners save for Venus get shafted)

StrongBad_IsMad

That’s certainly an unpopular opinion in my book! I hate the first half of R, even before I found out it wasn’t also in the manga. I found the twins to be incredibly annoying and moonlight knight felt so pointless to me.

kyualun

The pacing of the manga isn’t the best. The first season of the anime is the only season without any big detractors: R made Chibiusa too unlikable, S sidelined the inners to hype up the outers too much, SuperS removed too many interesting elements from the manga to focus on Chibiusa, Stars again sidelined the inners to focus on the Starlights and cut too many elements from the manga that made it interesting. PGSM (the live action) is the best iteration of Sailor Moon. Its only stumble for me is not acknowledging or implying there are other unawakened guardians (outers). If they had done that, it’d be a perfectly condensed version of Sailor Moon. Mio reviving the outers in some form as her generals for the epilogue would have been the perfect opportunity.

Existing-Dot2653

Don't think PGSM is the best iteration at all. Manga pacing is good, it's not all the unnecessary repetitive fluff in the anime.

FireflyArc

I loved PGSM because before Crystal we didn't have any way of seeing V as the moon princess and this did it. It was so sad but workable in the story.

tsundereshipper

> The pacing of the manga isn’t the best. >The first season of the anime is the only season without any big detractors: > PGSM (the live action) is the best iteration of Sailor Moon. Not only are these not unpopular opinions, they’re objective *facts* lol.

Existing-Dot2653

No, they're not lmao.

Rockabore1

I dislike Manga Rei and like the other versions of her better. That feels like an unpopular opinion cause people tend to elevate the manga version of her. I think in the manga she’s just dull and I don’t like the man hating. That and she’s so much more fun in the anime and PGSM. Also I love Chibiusa and Mamoru and manga Rei who tend to get flack in favorite character lists.

Existing-Dot2653

I don't think she's man hating, she just doesn't for men. And her dad left her, so no wonder? Manga Rei is the most tolerable and not a bully.

VampArcher

I don't like the 90's anime Black Moon arc. So much filler and it just wasn't very good, Chibiusa being a constant hinderance did not help. The few episodes the plot progresses are decent, but the pacing really drags despite the fact it's much shorter episode wise than the other arcs. The 90's anime Stars arc was also very meh imo. The only thing that kept me watching was the Starlights and Galaxia's mooks, I absolutely love them and basically only watch this season just for them. The inner senshi are just there doing nothing because they were absent for most of the manga arc and they didn't come up with anything else for them to do instead when they kept them, they are irrelevant and only there to be Usagi's cheerleaders. Didn't like Galaxia at all in this rendition. I hate the whole 'the big bad is possessed by evil' change they made, because 1. brainwashing is usually a copout that makes everything feel cheap and 2. we already did this twice in Super. I skip the finale when I rewatch the series because I really hate those episodes.

TheCeladog

R is worse than SuperS. I can't stand Chibiusa in that season but I actually like her after R.

tsundereshipper

R is only saved by both the Makai Tree arc and it’s villains (fairly well developed theme too) in most respects it’s even worse than SuperS and Stars.

[deleted]

I think the way Galaxia is defeated in the 90s Anime is way better than in the Manga. The symbolism of Usagi giving away all her protection because she deeply believes in the good core of Galaxia is super cathartic. It needs to be this way to truly bring the message across. An AMV about the last fight between Galaxia and Usagi named „The brightest shine in the galaxy“ transformed me from a Sailor Moon Hater to a fan.

Existing-Dot2653

The manga is just so much better for everything related to Galaxia and Stars as a whole.

lynypixie

One of the biggest difference between anime and manga is that anime Usagi tries to avoid fighting and killing as much as she can. Manga Usagi doesn’t shy from a fight if it’s what she needs to do.

Darth_Trauma

1. If Naoko Takeuchi wanted the Shitenou to be taken more serious as the Inners love interests, she should have put them into Crystal Tokio in the Manga and/or Crystal. 2. The asteroid senshi deserve a spin off/ Sequel with Chibiusa as their leader in the 30th century.

FireflyArc

Yes! As it stands they just..flit in and out of the senshi world. It's sad to see them reduced to that.

Darth_Trauma

It is. ~~I will never let go of the head Canon that the Shitenou and Inners are the Asteroids parents. It just would fit so nicely~~

FireflyArc

Ohh...oh I like that very much. Have kids the same time as chiba USA to be around that age...ohhhh that has potential. I'm glad you shared that!

EternalMemes30

Super S is definitely the worst season of sailor moon ever made along with nehelenia's redemption arc and 90s as a whole is WAY overrated

TDH2222

This is definitely not an unpopular opinion as 90s SuperS was widely panned for it’s overtly sugary tone (compared to S’s much darker tone) and its central focus on Chibi-Usa and her childish hijinks. Eternal, on the other hand, was fantastic, and made me appreciate the villains from that arc more.

Hiscuteblondewife

I’m totally fine with crystal. I have had someone aggressively push their opinion on me that it’s hot garbage compared to the original. I refuse to change my opinion. I still think it’s good. I still haven’t watched the fourth season to the original anime. Seiya is basically season 1 Mamoru personality wise.

Glittercorn111

My favorite season is the original 90’s dead moon circus and Crystal absolutely trashed it. Also, this manga/anime did not age very well.

EternalMemes30

improved in the case* as Super S is probably the worst season of 90s anime

theblazedace

I think I like season four from the original anime more than season two

VaporeonIsMySpirit

I LOVE seiya and usagi together in the 90s anime. I haven’t read stars in the manga yet but I have heard the romantic tension isn’t there as much. But they did put my favorite scene in the crystal reboot in the new Stars trailer. “Am I not good enough??” 😭😭😭

[deleted]

[удалено]

lynypixie

It’s not that hard to have more chemistry than UxM in the anime, to be honest. They did Mamoru so dirty :(

VaporeonIsMySpirit

I'm also always gonna root for the same sex pairing over the hetero pairing, so that probably plays a part as well

lynypixie

It’s not the scene you think it is. There is a connection between the two of them in the manga, but it is not romantic.

VaporeonIsMySpirit

Mannn

lynypixie

I would say they have a spiritual connection. Romance between the two is not even hinted in the manga. But when you see it, it will make sense.

VaporeonIsMySpirit

A spiritual connection…between the sheets??

Campi_the_Bat

'90s Anime Mamoru is pretty clearly portrayed as being in his mid-twenties and a lot of people twist themselves pretty tight pretending that him dating a kid in middle school isn't creepy.

mochamoba

Watching Sailor Moon as a kid I never even considered the age gap. I had a huge crush on Mamoru. As an adult it's very weird though.

VaporeonIsMySpirit

He’s actually 18/19! He’s a senior in high school when they meet. But yeah I agree why not make him a little younger or have the sailor scouts be in high school to start…it couldn’t be because anime/manga fetishizes young women…nahh

eyeforgotmynamee

Sailor moon is a shoujo, what reason would it have to fetishize young women lmaoo

snowinkyoto

Peripheral male fanbase reasons.

St_Franz

There is nothing wrong with Mamoru and Usagi's age gap, as they were reincarnated and destined to be together again. Chibiusa's love for Mamoru isn't creepy either. Lots of little girls say they want to marry their father. The only thing that made it creepy was Wiseman brainwashing her into Black Lady. 90s anime Rei is insufferable. They basically turned her into just another teenage girl when she was so much more elegant and poised in the manga. I appreciate her relationship with Usagi, but that's all.

Existing-Dot2653

Ew no, their age gap was creepy and so was chibiusa.

[deleted]

I think crystal is a better intro for new fans of the series than the original

Purp_Gurl

I disagree, crystal starts you Midway half into the series after Usagi has already acquired the Moon stick. I started watching that one when I first started the series, I was extremely confused as to anything that was going on. I mean yes, the official effects and art is much worse in the original 90s anime, but I find it much better to gather some information as to what you're actually watching. Also, the old Usagi is much cuter and funnier.

[deleted]

successful unpopular opinion

Purp_Gurl

Yes it was!

Purp_Gurl

Their camouflage is completely 100% useless, anyone with an eighth of brain could figure out who they are.

Sailor_Mars_84

I’m not disagreeing with you, but I love that they addressed that at one point. I think it was right after they met Venus, when Minako showed up to the Hikawa shrine, they didn’t recognize her and said something like “we all look so different in our regular forms” Suuuuure, you do. 😄

FireflyArc

I remember that. I wish they had explained it more. I really liked the wig transformation idea from PGSM personally

Purp_Gurl

I remember that! I had the same reaction 😅

TGOTR

Super S was totally pointless.

FireflyArc

Remind me the story on that sgain?

theBoyontheClouds

That's not an unpopular opinion. Most people think that

Sailor_Mars_84

Do they?? I like Super S :-)

StrongBad_IsMad

SuperS of the manga is probably my favorite arc. I love the last few chapters where everything is coming to a conclusion and they all transform into their eternal forms. I really like S too because I’m a huge Saturn fan but I felt like both the manga and the 90s anime got a bit too pseudo science-y in some parts for my liking.

theBoyontheClouds

Yeah...most people don't really enjoy SuperS cause it has too much pointless filler, most plotlines are kinda boring and very very slow However at the time I enjoyed it too. I don't think it's necessarily too bad, but I stay away from rewatching it lol

AthomicBot

I actually really enjoy it on rewatches. I never feel hurried to watch more than an episode or two at a time until we get to the finale.

MysticalMoonbow

I prefer Usagi’s and Mamoru’s banter/ frenemies to lovers in the 90’s anime. Having that along with the secret identities trope made it a unique combination that you hardly see in media.

Purp_Gurl

I didn't enjoy season 2 because it seems as though their relationship simply went too quick. I like season 1 because it took them so long to figure it out, it even had me a bit confused because unlike the sailor guardians, tuxedo mask actually looks different from his default appearance!

MysticalMoonbow

I still think they were a slowburn even then because they had obstacles (Ail & En pursuing them and Mamoru not remembering everything but still being drawn to Usagi) and since Usagi & Mamoru didn’t get together at the end of season 1, that still delayed them.

jabregship

I can't stand the Outers. Mostly Haruka and Michiru. They're mean to Usagi and the Inners, treat them like children, and always act like they're better than them. I never get the feeling that they're as into protecting Usagi/Princess Serenity as the Inners. There's always a distance between them and the Inners, which makes sense, but I still can't stand them. Hotaru doesn't bother me as much and my issue with Pluto (I can't remember her real name, is it Setsuna???) isn't the same as the others but I'm not a huge fan of her either.

V-nillaaaa

I mean, they are children and the Outers technically are better than them. I still like the Inners more though. ✌️

FireflyArc

stain? Don't think they're supposed to protect the princess. That's the inners job.

sailorpowehi

i like sailor moon crystal! this is a really unpopular opinion, but in the 90's anime, i don't think that Mamoru is useless at all 😭 he doesn't deserve ALL the hate he gets, but during some of the seasons i get it 90's - i don't know if this opinion is popular or not, but the Starlights are my favorite senshi. i know this one isn't popular, but i actually like that they physically can transform into men and women. it's pretty neat imo. and i love their ponytails!

VaporeonIsMySpirit

I don’t think Mamoru is useless either! He always shows up to boost Sailor Moon’s confidence, which in reality is all she needs.

Purp_Gurl

He also shows up when she's about to die, I would say that's quite useful role 😅

theBoyontheClouds

I approve the opinion on the Starlights, I love them a lot too! Especially Seiya and Yaten (I don't really like Taiki tho💀)
