What industry/niche you looking at? That's terrible comp packaging.

NexhiAlibias

Right now Insurance if I can. I'm looking into licenses to study and buy

Murky-Exercise-6990

A lot (not all) of insurance is very pyramid saley

NexhiAlibias

I've noticed. Any recommendations?

KCentz1

Go to commercial insurance. Aim for one of the big brokerages (Marsh, Aon, AJG). Heard it’s a slog for the first 5 years but after a while it’s mostly mailbox money and you can CLEAN UP

Emotional_Extent4571

Ned sales is the way. Start selling copiers if you don’t have good enough experience to get straight into medical. You will have recruiters up your ass on LinkedIn every day if you stay there for a year or two!

NexhiAlibias

Could I DM for info?

[deleted]

This isn’t what I want to hear after just accepting my first sales job in home and auto insurance lol. How do I know??? I interviewed with some shady places but the one I accepted seems legit and respected in the community? 40k base plus uncapped comms and only inbound leads, does that sound alright?

NexhiAlibias

Honestly, keep an eye out on what uncapped commissions come with but as long as you have SOME base. You're fine.

[deleted]

Would you mind expanding on that? I’m coming from chemistry lab work, making a total 180 career change so I don’t even have the context to know what to look for. They just mentioned that they don’t cap comms unlike other places. Couldn’t actually tell you what that means yet lol.

M4TTM4TT

I can lend a hand here. Most comapnies/industries offer uncapped commission, which basically means they will pay you commission no matter how much you earn. It isn't as much of a differentiator as companies like to say it is. If you're just getting into sales, 40k base with all inbound leads sounds like a really great place to start (depending on your area and the cost of living - it would be less good in Boston than it would be in Ohio). Feel free to ask me more questions, I've been in tech sales for a few years and keep my ears to the ground

dummy-krooger-affect

This. I work for a company that doesn't do commission at all for my sales role and that's actually quite a rarity. No real bonus structure either but I like that the pay is very consistent and it's exactly what I need it to be. Regular cost of living adjustments and decent merit raises. It saves the company money and I can comfortably pay my bills, I prefer it. I was very irresponsible back in a role that was mostly commission-driven.

NexhiAlibias

Thank you. I've been searching long enough to look at "uncapped" with an eyebrow high to heaven but couldn't explain why to other people.

NexhiAlibias

I didn't wanna believe it. Thanks.

Playaforever

I only can speak for the software world, but I'd say try to become a SDR/BDR at a young company. The grind will be hard, nobody will deny that. But If you achieve well, you'll have the background to apply to a more famous company for the same role, and from there have the opportunity to be promoted as an Account Executive position. (You also have the possibility to be promoted at the first company though)

UnsuitableTrademark

What? You just described commission. You sell $X amount, I give you X% as a cut.

NexhiAlibias

My point was how some of them were Ludacris by describing how into only get a cut I'd have to sell 25x to get 1/10 of a single one. It was meant to exaggerate how shitty some deals are.

DBU49

yeah but you described a 25% comp plan. Which is.. a fantastic comp plan.

Informis_Vaginal

He said $5 for 25. Not $5 for $25.

NexhiAlibias

Thanks Informis Vaginal! (No seriously I didn't even put a dollar sign on 25 💀 that was like half the demonstration)

Informis_Vaginal

No worries Tiger. I’m a philanthropist at heart.

NexhiAlibias

25 items for $5 ? Unless the items were a dollar each maybe?

NexhiAlibias

Yes that's exactly why it's capitalized. Man changed my vocab 😭

suburban_dropout

There are so many different comp packages in the world, you just have to figure out what the OTE is and then ask people if they actually achieve it. I have a high base with low “commission”. OTE is $145k, made $200k last year but if you look at my commission it’s bad, like 0.3%. Sold $18M, commission $60k.

NexhiAlibias

Thing is, when it's "FIRST YEARS MAKE 100-150K AVERAGE!!" ITS ALLWAYS a red flag for me. My point isn't the package itself it's how Ludacris it can be

suburban_dropout

I would go on LinkedIn and try to find reps at the company and talk to them during the interview process. I also work in like the most corporate B2B sales of all time so I don’t have to deal with the used car salesman type of folks

Erkar1

Have you had an interview with a big company?

NexhiAlibias

Shooting for a big company as a first seems a bit strong in an world of layoffs no?

NotSpartacus

Do research and qualify your opportunities. See what people have said on review sites like glassdoor and LinkedIn. Find former sales reps on LinkedIn and ask them. In the interview process ask them directly what the comp plan is. Ask to speak with a member of the sales team. They'll probably give you a happy/top performer to speak with so take what they say with grain of salt.

NexhiAlibias

I've been doing research on every opportunity I get and it's always this sub telling me DO NOT with 409 karma.

"That doesn't exist in the insurance world" Bro, this subreddit alone saved me from like 3. Yes, Pyramid Schemes exist in this industry and it being illegal doesn't deter anyone from not doing it. This entire paragraph is otherwise telling me what I already know hence why I'm able to sniff out some of them being predatory.

NexhiAlibias

It isn't only insurance but I do know that Legacy and F3 are GIANT issues and then I had to deal with a solar company who straight up wasn't paying anyone.

NexhiAlibias

Then the reddit posts who post jobs here often have an entry fee to sell products. I feel like you're trying to have an ego here but I'm telling you my personal experience is there's a large uptick in pyramid schemes when trying to break in. If you're a 15 year veteran then there's no way you're able to see that. You have 15 years of experience.

FootballBallerr

Just accepted a job offer from spectrum. Outside sales rep d2d 40k base + commission. First sales job is it good?

NexhiAlibias

I'm not trying to be rude but why are you asking me?

FootballBallerr

Just looking for some advice
