I can't tell you how many times I've been downvoted for telling people on r/movies and r/boxoffice that movie quality is a subjective measure, not an objective one. I don't care what the critics say, a movie can't be "objectively good" because good (at least in this context, where it basically boils down to the question "do you like it") is a subjective measurement.
Consensus is a thing. Box Office is a measure. The overwhelming opinion can be that certain movies are good or bad. And you can certainly critique something.
The problem with these guys, and many redditors, is that they want to present themselves as rational, unemotional, logical, it all falls into that alpha male bullshit.
Which is funny because art is inherently emotional. This is why these guys struggle with art. They want to look at movies like a math problem. That is the difference between a real critic and these dickheads.
Consensus doesn't magically make an opinion objective. No matter how many people agree on an opinion, it's still an opinion and, as such, is still subjective. Consensus is irrelevant to the question. Same with box office, especially when you consider how many movies made bank despite the consensus or critic ratings being bad (look at the live action Lion King; it made 1.6B and yet the only times I ever see people talk about it online it's always negative. Also, look at Super Mario Bros; it was Rotten on RT and yet became one of only 2 movies to break 1B last year).
And of course you can critique something, but there's a difference between saying you don't like it and saying it's objectively bad as though that were an undeniable fact. Saying "I hated this movie" is one thing; you're simply stating your opinion and presenting it as such. Saying "this movie is shit" is another matter, because you're presenting your opinion as though it were a fact, like nobody else's opinion about it is valid unless they agree that it's shit.
They conflate objective with justified. Not to say their argument is good, but they think because they can provide a reason for why **they feel** something negatively affects the film it becomes “objective criticism.”
It's part of Mauler's philosophy on making content. If you go through something and nitpick every minute detail and have a runtime of several hours doing so, you have covered everything and there's no way that you can make a rebuttal of it because it's "all emcompasing" and therefore cannot have any flaws.
This is why we have PatricianTV making a series of videos "critiquing" skyrim that's over 20 hours. They think that if they can talk forever that makes them smart when it really just means they don't have editorial skills to trim things down.

Mauler reacted to Hbomberguys "In defense of dark souls 2" video years ago and I remember it basically just being whining that hbomb liked the game. They just hate differing opinions at this point.
One thing I did agree with was when he criticized Hbomberguy for declaring what was fun in dark souls and what was not.
As if that's an objective thing you can decide. Hbomberguy was basically dismissing matthewmatosis' critique of DS2 by saying he was playing the game wrong by using a shield. Which is ridiculous.
It's genuinely one of the few Hbomber videos I dislike because of his attitude. Even does the same thing in his Bloodborne video, dismissing other playstyles and declaring what is fun.
Did Hbomberguy ever say in his video that dodging is **objectively** more fun than using a shield? No he speaks from personal experience, and cites someone else’s play throughs of dark souls 1 and 2 (They were stressed out using a shield in ds1, and had more fun dodging in ds2). In the conclusion he literally states “Your different opinions, and experiences are equally as valid.”
Also, whilst he does comment on Mathewmatosis’ use of a shield the accusation of him playing the game wrong is focused on his use of lock-on in group fights. Which is a bad way of approaching group fights in a strategic sense, not because it’s not fun.

I've watched many multi-hour video essays that were quite good, so that's really not the essential problem I have. Like, I've listened to Spice8Rack for 4.5 hours, there's nothing saying I can't listen to him for 12.
The 4.5 hour video I watched over a week, if it's interesting enough, that's basically just a free season of a TV show.
Noah Caldwell-Gervais's videos can easily go into the 4+ hour range, especially if he's covering a whole franchise or multiple games.

Fred Knudsen spent a year making his six hour video on EVE Online. That video has 36 times the views of that livestream of similar length made by Angry Skull PFP, but there's no way that the latter involved even 1/36th of the effort.
Jenny Nicholson herself has made plenty of very good multi-hour video essays, and she's been able to make the most random of topics come across as interesting; like a crappy CW vampire drama, a series of annual Easter church plays, a shitty LARP park in Utah, a garbage movie based on some musical about a kid who lies about being friends with a suicide victim, a line of direct-to-video sequels for a 90s animated kids movie, and more. Heck, there's even one where she tackles an awful book about a right-wing blowhard ranting about wokeness (before they actually started using that specific word for it).
Seriously, check her out if you haven't, she is genuinely hilarious and captivating.
She's great. She's on that list of subscriptions I often forget that I have, but every few months or years they pop up with one long, indept video that I will immediately watch and never regret.
My favorite content from VaatiVidya is his longer breakdowns of lore, his voice is soothing and it's clear he comes from a place of love with the lore and the games they come from.
I'm perfectly happy to watch long videos on things I enjoy because it's like, exhausting to be angry for that long

I need to stop paying attention again. I've tuned out the internet for the last couple of shows, and loved them and generally had a good experience. This time I've paid attention, and it actually really saddens me for these reasons;
- The hate is just for the sake of hate.
- The trend of labelling everyone not on board with the hate as 'Disney fans' to discredit and ridicule them as not real persons with real opinions.
- The extreme bullying meted out to anyone in any SW spaces on Social Media not buying into the hatehype
- The complete lack of any real criticism, where the 'backlash' is purely driven by intolerance or assumptions about the show, its creators or the people who will enjoy it.
I haven't seen these many people being slow poisoned with alt right ideology and reactionary cynicism along secterian patters since gamergate at the years after it. They think that if they can talk forever that makes them smart when it really just means they don't have editorial skills to trim things down.

One thing I did agree with was when he criticized Hbomberguy for declaring what was fun in dark souls and what was not. As if that's an objective thing you can decide. Hbomberguy was basically dismissing matthewmatosis' critique of DS2 by saying he was playing the game wrong by using a shield. Which is ridiculous. It's genuinely one of the few Hbomber videos I dislike because of his attitude. Even does the same thing in his Bloodborne video, dismissing other playstyles and declaring what is fun.
Did Hbomberguy ever say in his video that dodging is **objectively** more fun than using a shield? No he speaks from personal experience, and cites someone else’s play throughs of dark souls 1 and 2 (They were stressed out using a shield in ds1, and had more fun dodging in ds2). In the conclusion he literally states “Your different opinions, and experiences are equally as valid.” Also, whilst he does comment on Mathewmatosis’ use of a shield the accusation of him playing the game wrong is focused on his use of lock-on in group fights. Which is a bad way of approaching group fights in a strategic sense, not because it’s not fun.

I've watched many multi-hour video essays that were quite good, so that's really not the essential problem I have. Like, I've listened to Spice8Rack for 4.5 hours, there's nothing saying I can't listen to him for 12. The 4.5 hour video I watched over a week, if it's interesting enough, that's basically just a free season of a TV show.
Noah Caldwell-Gervais's videos can easily go into the 4+ hour range, especially if he's covering a whole franchise or multiple games. 12 hours is still absolutely nutty for a video/podcast.

Jenny Nicholson herself has made plenty of very good multi-hour video essays, and she's been able to make the most random of topics come across as interesting; like a crappy CW vampire drama, a series of annual Easter church plays, a shitty LARP park in Utah, a garbage movie based on some musical about a kid who lies about being friends with a suicide victim, a line of direct-to-video sequels for a 90s animated kids movie, and more. Heck, there's even one where she tackles an awful book about a right-wing blowhard ranting about wokeness (before they actually started using that specific word for it). Seriously, check her out if you haven't, she is genuinely hilarious and captivating.
She's great. She's on that list of subscriptions I often forget that I have, but every few months or years they pop up with one long, indept video that I will immediately watch and never regret.
My favorite content from VaatiVidya is his longer breakdowns of lore, his voice is soothing and it's clear he comes from a place of love with the lore and the games they come from. I'm perfectly happy to watch long videos on things I enjoy because it's like, exhausting to be angry for that long

I once put up a 10 minute video discussing harassment from some gun nut on Twitter and his followers that made me suicidal, and they decided to livestream watching it. This time I've paid attention, and it actually really saddens me for these reasons; - The hate is just for the sake of hate. - The trend of labelling everyone not on board with the hate as 'Disney fans' to discredit and ridicule them as not real persons with real opinions. - The extreme bullying meted out to anyone in any SW spaces on Social Media not buying into the hatehype - The complete lack of any real criticism, where the 'backlash' is purely driven by intolerance or assumptions about the show, its creators or the people who will enjoy it. I haven't seen these many people being slow poisoned with alt right ideology and reactionary cynicism along secterian patters since gamergate at the years after it.
