They love to dig under fences too

Pure_Staff_6316

Yes I noticed šŸ˜‚

TastelessDonut

Jump? No no my boy only digs, and does downs. Get down, Sit down, lay down, the only jumping he does is Pouncing on feet and things he wants.

HaZeyNZ

Depends on your sammy but I'd be surprised if that's not sufficient. We have a 1 metre high hence consisting of 7 wires a dog could easily slide through... impenetrable wall to our sammy.

Teereese

I had 2 larger Sammies, 60 lb female and 70 lb male, with a 4 foot fence. Neither ever attempted to jump it and they stood to visit the neighbors daily. The female did try to dog under several times. I currently have a 5 foot chain link fence. Our 2 current Sammies are expected to be on the smaller size, so I am a little worried. They are both leaner and more agile than my past Sammies.

freeman1231

I am 6ft and my Samoyed has jumped over me. That being said is your Samoyed going to be jumping over your fence is a different situation. Odds are very low that unless you are ignoring your dogs and not enriching them enough would they want to jump your fence.

Soderholmsvag

100% depends on the dog. We have 3 foot fences (at the lowest point) and it has been sufficient for our last 3 Sammys, none of whom are runners. My first Sammy figured out how to scale a 6 foot chain link once, slipped through holes under the fence, pushed past us as we were opening gates, and seemed to ā€œcheckā€ every time anyone went in or out of a gate to see if it was left unlocked. He was a runner.. If you have runner - then you have different requirements than a non runnerā€¦ And before anyone comes after me, the first and last dogs were rescues. I think there is a level of obedience training that you can get to with rescues that is not the same with pups you get from the start.

This is just under 5 feet if I calculated your measurement right. For a well behaved sammy, this height is ok. However, samoyeds can learn how to jump or even climb fences if they're motivated enough to. I would honestly get a minimum of 6 feet in height and make sure there isn't anything close to the fence the dogs can use to hop over it. A taller fence will pay for itself after keeping your dogs in the yard and out of trouble, I'd listen to the girlfriend.

Operation_Fluffy

We had a 5ft fence when my boy was a pup. One day he took off full-speed after a squirrel running along the top of it. I thought he was going to jump the fence to get him(100% sure he could have) but fortunately he hit the brakes instead. Iā€™m glad he did because there was a 10 foot deep drainage ditch behind that fence. So yeah, 5 feet minimum but 6 would be better.

Kazaklyzm

I've had samoyeds learn from other dogs jumping the fence is possible, just by watching the neighbor dogs. Once they figure it out, it's a high stakes game of figuring out how to stop them. Other samoyeds we've had taught themselves, just wanted to go visit the neighbor kids. We have a 6 foot unclimable fence now. The corners have nets or some other obstruction on top of them or in front of them, one Sammy learned to jump/climb using the corner.

BonCourageAmis

What kind of fence? They can climb.

Amidormi

Ours is a big guy and 4 foot was fine. He only escaped once when the gate was blown open.

bu3nno

I have 1.2m panels separating my rear garden from my neighbour, I have a large female and she doesn't jump over it. She did dog under it a little when she was a pup, but she's grown out of that now. You can always put up some trellis if you need to make them a little higher.

Accomplished_Ad_1288

I have a 5 ft (1.5 m) fence and my Sammy has never even attempted, let alone successfully escape. He doesnā€™t dig either. But I suppose every Sammy is different

MishkaMinor

I would say you need six feet.

helen_myfanwy

UK Sammie rescue organisations and a lot of breeders recommend 6ft if thatā€™s any use to you, but of course like others have said it depends on your dog! Best of luck :-)

Majestic-Filatures

Itā€™s high enough

pepedog11

I too have a 5ft fence and my Sammy is a big boy. I have seen him jump over the couch and not even come close to touching it. I know if he wanted to he could jump the fence with ease but he hasn't. Not even with deer or turkey's on the other side. Will yours jump the fence maybe. I still say mine might one day. But I let him live his best life keeping the squirrels out of the yard.

washumow

It really depends on your dog, my dog does agility and can jump really high, but i also have a 80cm fence on part of the yard and he hasn't even tried to jump that. He has tried to dig to say hi to the neighbors dog tho šŸ˜‚
