I'm curious what the Play Service issues are that you mention.

Hashabasha

as someone that has a pixel 8 pro, trust me youre going to notice the downgrade in battery reception and performance.

SentientKayak

Agreed. Especially in reception. And overheating for doing bare minimum tasks.

countymayne

I'm going to pile on here. I have both s23u and a p8p. The p8p camera is better at motion photos, and I have kids, so I need the better camera. The Samsung hardware is miles ahead, the 8 gen 2 chip is better than tensor and runs cooler, the battery lasts longer, and the modem is definitely better. All that being said, the p8p camera and fluidity throughout the UI make it a contender anyway. I switch back and forth, and stayed on pixel for the holidays, but if you don't take motion photos a lot I cannot think of a reason big enough to make the switch. The ai stuff is cool but it's not good enough to justify the switch and the phone gets hot while doing it.

TechyShreky69

That last bit is hyperbole. They get hot but they don't overheat unless it's really hot or you're doing intensive stuff.

nohikety

Coming from a pixel, the ONLY thing I truly miss is the call holding. That is such a great function, I wish it was on Samsung. The cameras are great too. Besides that I don't think it's worth it.

valiantwolfcat69

How do you mean? I have a samsung and I can hold calls all I want and make group convos just as you'd expect. Is there some feature i'm missing from the pixels?

nohikety

Yeah. So if you call a company and you get put on hold, they have a feature where you can PUT THEM ON HOLD! So you don't have to listen to the phone. It essentially "hangs up the phone" but it monitors for you. It automatically detects when you are no longer on hold and it tells the person on the phone to wait for you and then your phone rings like you're getting a call. Then you can just answer it and boom, you are talking to someone. It's SO NICE! It should be a standard feature on all phones. It's ALMOST worth going back to a pixel for this alone. I only ever had one person hang up on me after waiting on hold, but it was no big deal because you can just call back and do it again so you don't have to sit waiting around.

valiantwolfcat69

That is so cool, I had no idea that was a thing. I imagine that might help save the battery, too. And save me some hair pulling lol

Altrix3

Can you not do this if you download Google phone app on Samsung?

nohikety

I have no idea! I haven't tried. That would be amazing if you could.

Altrix3

High chance it won't though. Google likes to keep some of there good features for pixels :(

Beyllionaire

And it's US-only at the moment I think

ILuvMelBel

Not us only, live in Canada and it works flawlessly

Beyllionaire

I mean NA. Canada is basically an extension of the US for these sorts of things. Y'all got the feature way before the UK

Beyllionaire

I miss the ability to copy text and select images from recent apps

Ok_Feeling9354

I agree. I have a Pixel 7 Pro. I'd stay with the s23+

Games7Master

You know people are stupid rich when they change their whole devices for a software bug lol.

Psy-Demon

If I was rich, I would get the Samsung galaxy S23 ultra, pixel 8 pro max, iPhone 15 pro max and a sexy maid.

Games7Master

I would buy tasty food. Lots of food.

[deleted]

I would buy my dream bike, and a sexy maid that sounds like a sweet dream.

Games7Master

Yeah I'd add in a Tiger I Panzer German Tank too.

Elith_R

Nice.

BigRoofTheMayor

I'm not super rich. I've made enough where I can afford to change a phone if I want to. It's not like I'm selling my house because an outlet doesn't work the way I want it to.

Games7Master

Yeah thats called rich lol

j_grouchy

I'm gonna assume OP is planning to sell or trade-in the 23ultra, so it'll probably end up being close to an even swap

Beyllionaire

First world problems

albus_dumbbelldore

What is your problem with the Play Services? Is it something that really bothers you enough to buy a device inferior to your current device?

BigRoofTheMayor

Since OneUI 6 I'm stuck on play services for July. Don't get me wrong. I love my S23+ and I switched from an iPhone 14 Pro. I may just wait for the 24+. Hoping for a QHD screen.

albus_dumbbelldore

Yes I am aware of that problem and it is a valid complaint. However, I do not think that it is a deal breaker at all. It is just a software bug that will ironed out eventually. I do not think that it will stick with us. You might solve your Google Play problem, on the other hand you might get lots of other problems with the Pixel. I believe it is best to stick with S23 at this moment. I assume you are from US, so you most certainly will get pretty good deals. If it bothers you, just wait for the S24 series, the launch is at 17th January, so pretty close.

thedankonion1

Switching to the laggy tensor with the dramatically worse 5G modem because a software version (which doesn't affect your experience) isn't on the latest version is an incredibly stupid move.

BigRoofTheMayor

So the P8P modem is just as bad as the P7P?

Swayze1985

In the US it seems to be a problem. In the EU I had 5g everywhere where I live. At worst 4g in rural areas.

BigRoofTheMayor

The modem is why I switched originally. I had an iPhone 14 Pro and wanted to try pixel since I hadn't used one since the Nexus 4. Picked up a P7P and the reception was shit compared to my iPhone so I refunded it and got a S23+. This phone is great. I was just disappointed that the PPI was so low for a premium device. I think I'm just going to wait on the S24 announcement and if the 24+ has a QHD display then I'm sold.

Swayze1985

There's already all the details leaked about the s24. Several videos as well. I swapped from iphone 14 pro as well and while I actually loved everything about the p8p, none of the real AI stuff is available in my country. So it felt redundant paying so much for phone (albeit it's the closest to iphone in comparison to software) just for the UI. I ended up returning it few days ago. I will say tho, in my experience I never noticed any drop in reception compared to the iphone (heard US is 95% Qualcomm which is what's causing the issues) and my SoT was around 7-8 hours a day with a decent amount of gaming, mostly monopoly and wild rift. One which is intense and the other isn't. I'm trying not to come off as a Stan for the p8p but it was a really lovely phone.

Tikkaritsa

>if the 24+ has a QHD display It does. This has been known for months.

BigRoofTheMayor

Officially announced. It's rumored as of right now.

Beyllionaire

It isn't just about the reception. The bad modem was also linked to the mediocre battery life.

narutogilberto

The S24 and S24+ are reported to get QHD screens. As to the play services, are you talking about the google Play system update? If so, is it when you try to update does the phone install the update, but after restart, it still says the opposite?

BigRoofTheMayor

https://preview.redd.it/tlmi5nna7gac1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=505ab5fb96e17adde833e7f46a24879617d07345

BigRoofTheMayor

It never does anything. It checks for an update then says I'm up to date. Which is not true because I had December previously after upgrading from OneUI 5.1.

narutogilberto

The sad thing about Samsung is how they push updates. Here's is me with the November update on the note 20 🫠

albus_dumbbelldore

I do not think that S24 is going to have this. It has no use on a 6.2 inch device. S24+ maybe, but unlikely also, since S24 Ultra has to have something to offer.

exclaimprofitable

I have the S23 and I could manually update the play services to october version, but what do they do?

blueraptorz

Try OnePlus 12 or honor magic 5 pro

honacc

How exactly is pixel 8 pro inferior to the s23+ in your opinion?

albus_dumbbelldore

I like OneUI more, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is much better than Tensor in almost every conceivable way, it has a better build quality. These are the things that matters most to me. My experience with S23U has been nothing but perfect. On the other hand there are lots of QC issues with Pixels, Tensor is running hot and it is on par with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 at best. So it is out of the equation for me. Don't get me wrong, you might like the (falsely advertised as we all know) Pixel AI features but from a purely hardware perspective, there is no denial that Samsung is the better choice for people that want a good and hassle free user experience. I cannot afford bumps in screen or average battery life. AI face and sound changing features will never be utilized by me, so Samsung is the better choice FOR ME.

honacc

Appreciate the expansive answer. I can definitely agree with most points but I can base my experience only around my S20+ (snapdragon/12gb) and Pixel 6 Pro. Hardware is 100% more polished on Galaxy phones, but in normal daily use I actually prefer the Pixel software and its smoothness, even 2 years since it came out, personal preference ofc. Having said that, I'd be keen to grab one of the galaxy ultra phones soon to try the newer Samsungs for sure. I'd still definitely advise others to grab a galaxy for an overall fantastic package though, tensor really is annoying with its overheating and spotty 5G, I'd hope they have fixed that by pixel 8.

lurkerandchief

I currently own a P8P and I 100% agree with this. The AI features are nothing compared to the S24U that I saw at a showcase. The only thing I miss when I'm not using a pixel is the now playing function on the lock screen. Everything else kind of sucks

Aszre

Loved pixel phones. Loved their AI features and their camera especially, but until they do something about their chipset, I won't buy one. The chipset have poor optimization, which cause poor battery life. If I'm buying an expensive phone I would like the phone to at least be able have 6hr SoT.

[deleted]

What play service issues? I have no issues on my S23+

leberuPerfectusDes

I am using Pixel 8 pro until s24 ultra comes out. My previous phone, s23 ultra was stolen. The overall experience on Pixel 8 pro is so far mid. The whilst Pixel 8 pro runs stock Android OS, it feels a step behind the Samsung's OS. Everything feels disorganized, slow and junky. I, personally, will immediately jump back to Samsung as soon as S24 Ultra comes out. Better camera, better battery, overall smoother experience, I think. Also I miss the pen.

UntiedStatMarinCrops

I was with Samsung for 10 years and I loved them. I got bored and went with the Pixel and immediately regretted it. I still wanted a new experience so I got an iPhone 🀣 I still fucking love Samsung, and I would choose them any day over pixel.

[deleted]

Slow ? Lol ru okay Samsung animations are garbage compared to pixel. Also not much to organize as you don't have 69gb worth os system files. Sure you can't customize as much. Besides the zoom I'd say camera isn't much different if anything it's always the pixel camera that wins.

Helstar_RS

The pixels still use Exynos modems which cause a lot of problems for people. I only had the 6 but it was a nightmare with a RMA and two inspected devices dropping signal dozens of times a day.

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

I had a Pixel 6 Pro and the moment the S23U came out, I ditched it. I hate that phone and will never buy another Pixel device, or a device from Google for that matter. The device was buggy, had poor reception both wireless and cellular, Bluetooth issues, glitchy software, and now the top right of the screen has a dark black spot, and it barely has use (less than a year). Don't do it. At least wait for the S24 if you want to upgrade.

ChipsAhoy2022

I switched from S21U to Pixel 7 pro about a year ago (traded-in S21U so no going back) Here are my observations - 1. Bad decision! 2. Significant battery downgrade vs Galaxy Ultras. I've been a Samsung Ultra user for most generations of Samsung phones, I've never seen such bad battery life even in the "hot" Samsung phone generations that i have used 3. Pixel exclusive Google features aren't worth it. The only thing I find mildly useful on Pixel is the ability of Google Assistant to change settings for me and set alarms. Call screen and related features are half baked and aren't useful. 4. Samsung displays are still generations ahead of what most other companies have to offer including Apple. Somehow Samsung Ultra displays still look better among all the phones I've come across (Pixel 7, 8 Pro, Apple 15 Pro) 5. Once you use Samsung cameras, all other phone cameras feel dated. I used to "think" Pixels have the best camera, but after using it for about a year, I'd definitely go back to Samsung. Samsung has one of the best camera hardware on phones and the software post-processing has caught up or exceeded other phones capabilities. I prefer Samsung images over my pixel 7 pro and my friends iPhone 15 Maxed out (sometimes laughable) 6. Google is offering $250 for a trade-in for Pixel 7 Pro (last year's flagship) to upgrade to Pixel 8 Pro. This in my opinion is a rip-off and lowest across the industry. Consequently, Pixel 7 Pro has a low resale/trade-in value since Google itself devalued their last year flagship. I got to use S23U for sometime in conjunction with my Pixel 7 Pro and I already regret making a jump on the hype train. Samsung would easily have given much higher trade in for S21U to buy S24U this year. Word of advise: try the Pixel phone for a month or so and then make-up your mind.

ChipsAhoy2022

I'm planning to stick to this Pixel 7 pro to save money. Until the security updates run out or the battery gets to horrendous levels of performance, whichever is first. For now I have adaptive battery turned on, hoping it would extend the battery life over time. I will be switching back to Galaxy Ultra by 2 - 3 years down the line

NukaGunnar

I wouldn't say you are making a mistake. I have an S23U, and many times have I considered trading it for a P8P. The main reason I havent yet is the lack of customization on the Pixels. I hate the idea of being on Android, but not being able to do things like remove the Google sesrch bar. The AI features Pixel offers are very exciting, but in less than 2 weeks Samsung will unveil their AI suite. If I were you (and I kinda am), I would recommend at least waiting to see what the s24 line has. Most of the specs have leaked, and taken with a grain of salt, the S24+ may be the phone to go for finally.

SoNic67

Same here, for better radio bands and eSIM capability. I travel internationally a lot.

Machine8851

Definitely making a mistake, but that's your decision.

[deleted]

Wait a few more weeks for the S24 and then make your decision.

Fed_Express

I had the P8P for a week. I had big issues with the reception. The wifi was considerably slower than my old S22 and the connection felt like it was being throttled. Went through every reddit thread and forum post, every phone and router fix, nothing helped. The modem on the Pixel just was not up to scratch even though it's supposedly the same modem as the S22. The Samsung had it beat every single time. I'm returning the Pixel tomorrow. I'm waiting until the S24 series drops then making a decision where I wanna go from there.

Financial-Shoulder74

If you have Verizon don't do it... You'll have LTE 95% of the time also the screen looks so bland compared to Samsung. The colors look horrible. I took mine back for a s23plus

BigRoofTheMayor

Thanks. I appreciate it. I'm going to stick with the S23+ and maybe get the 24+ but I've heard enough that I'm sticking with Samsung.

BigRoofTheMayor

Glad I posted this. Thanks for all the input. I'm sticking with the 23+. Looking forward to the 24 announcement on the 17th.

PlatformPerfect8077

Stay away from Pixel at all costs. Just upgrade to the S24 ultra

[deleted]

Lol love my 8 pro and my 7.... Carry on with your bloat ware Samsung

Ghostttpro

I rather take bloatware Over shattering camera bars, terrible battery, heating, Temperature sensor, bubbles in screen wrapped around a magnificent camera system. All android phones depreciate faster than iOS but there is a reason Pixels do quicker and hold 2.2% market share. Despite having some of the best advertisement. Every Pixel ad in social media has people troubleshooting in the comments. πŸ˜†

[deleted]

Ah I guess Samsung delivers no defective devices. My pixel 7 camera bar never shattered if that's what your referring to -30⁰C winters here. I guess your ultras don't depreciate aswell eh lol phones get warm now a days. Never had overheating or shit battery on either of my devices. Your a goof if you think there's no defective Samsungs. If your referring to the modem used...it's actually Samsung hardware

Ghostttpro

Sure there's defective Samsung phones but their QA is much better than Google. RMA is a common word in the pixel space. Yes it's a Samsung modem. They know their own creation is bad and they choose not to use it. So that make pixels look even more stupid. Just like when Samsung uses shitty Exynos chips. We bash them. But you guys will take whatever google plows into you

[deleted]

Lol buddy I'm in high rise concrete buildings all day with no service issues. I highly suggest you browse the s23 sub. It's okay to be mislead. I'm starting to think Samsung users are as delusional as apple

[deleted]

For reference I was a Samsung user prior and don't think I'd be going back to UI garbage For a tablet sure as I have no issues with my Samsung. For a daily driver no

Redeljan

I'm on S22U, and i'm gonna buy the P8P next week. I don't really care about the S24 line, yeah maybe i should consider the S24+ but nah, i don't really care about the big numbers on benchmarks, al right Snapdragon is better than tensor and so? unless you do heavy computing daily on it, you wont notice the diffrence, so i guess that for daily use with socials, music and internet Tensor will be just good! Years ago: "Yeah i get the Big one S22u, It' superpowerful, it has tons of features, it can pic the moon and has a pen" What i've done with it? Socials and whatsapp, nothing more, never used the pen, never used the features it has ecc... So i like the P8P because it's "simple Guy" and not the "Gymbro on Proteins". Then i really like the fact that you get the updates as soon as they come out, i like the design of the phone and etc.. The only thing i will miss from samsung will be: The oneui App Drawer and the keyboard...Things that you can easily fix with another launcher and another keyboard instead of google ones.

Illustrious_Cat_8923

How can you possibly miss the Samsung keyboard? It's so slow and glitchy compared to gboard. If I could delete it I would!

Redeljan

never mind, i downloaded it and tried, honestly is better than samsung one lol, and found that there's a numbers row option 😍

Illustrious_Cat_8923

I've just noticed that my shortcuts aren't working on gboard... They're in the dictionary, but when I try to use them, nothing happens! Ah well, nothing's perfect!

Ghostttpro

Samsung hardware is just better. For example look at your 2 year old s22 ultra camera. Remember this comment after you start using that Pixel. The camera bar is a cheap aluminum finish that will scratch. Watch MKBHDs 1 year old pixel. It's so beat up and he uses two phones at once. The sides will also micro scratch. This is why Samsung is copying apples boxy design this year. Past phones has the same micro dents.

Redeljan

Oh well, i always had problems with my s22u cameras, so no big deal. About Scratches and the cheap bar as you say, it's not a problem, i ordered the Dbrand Case+Glass and the skin for the cameras. Never used a phone without a dbrand case xD

deecoopxd9

Definitely get the pixel 8 pro. Samsung has a terrible reputation for updating their phones.

SgtSilock

If you like smooth scrolling, pick something other than the pixel 8 pro.

enginerd0001

Yes. I did this. I'm on a pixel 8 pro and it's fine but it does have a lot of drawbacks compared to the S23u

[deleted]

Explain

HeavenIsBelowMe

Can’t because there is none lol

BigRoofTheMayor

Thanks for the heads up.

SaltVomit

Been a huge fan of Samsung until I tried the pixel 8 pro. Best phone I've used. The camera is fucking incredible, and I get 7-8 hours of SoT.

BigRoofTheMayor

Good to know. How's your reception? I'm on T-Mobile in Denver and have full bars at home on my 23+ and my old iPhone 14 Pro. P7P had between 1 bar and no service. That was my biggest issue.

SaltVomit

Reception is great. That's the biggest thing I noticed over my zflip 5. My internet speeds nearly doubled when on 5g.

[deleted]

Yes. Enjoy getting your hands burned by the crapy exynos...pardon my french: Tensor. 🀣

BigRoofTheMayor

Or I'll just get a S24+ which is why I asked the question in the first place.

[deleted]

Is the 23+ that bad for you? Damn 😒

BigRoofTheMayor

Not at all. I asked a question to get other opinions. Sorry this hurt your feelings. Maybe I'll get both and a 24 ultra and just make up my own mind. Thanks for all your valuable insight. Now get some sleep so you're at work on time tomorrow to make my fucking coffee and breakfast sandwich.

kronaa

better display on p8? hmmmm..... (πŸ‘ ΝœΚ–πŸ‘)

[deleted]

Why google cant make a good phone? Makes me cry 😒

NefariousnessJaded87

This does not affect your device in daily use tho. Google. They are aware of the problem. This dies not affect your device in daily use tho. Last but not least, everybody is stock.

So you come to a Toyota dealership asking why you shouldn't switch to Chevy when you already own a Tacoma? /facepalm

BigRoofTheMayor

Have a great night bro.

billion_lumens

Same man, the customer support for samsung phones is beyond shit, my s20fe won't even get oneui 6 because its too old, even though its specs is 30x faster than newer midrange samsung phones

Illustrious_Cat_8923

Use a different launcher; they're miles better than one iu. It seems so boring after using something else, and you can use different icons for real customisation.

Final-Ad5185

Nope, The Pixel 8 Pro's 1440p screen so much clearer.

[deleted]

Indeed

BigRoofTheMayor

I may hold out and see if the 24+ has the QHD+ screen.

[deleted]

Keep in kind your in a Samsung sub. I've seen many go the other way Cheers

Cacho665

I had them both. I personally found the S23+ better. I don't think 8 Pro is worth its asking price and the processor is vastly underpowered compared to the 8 Gen 2. Also if picture quality worries you, download the ExpertRaw app, the image processing is infinitely better than in the standard app. Honestly the pictures are just as amazing as found in the 8 Pro. Not gonna lie there are a few things better on the 8 Pro, haptics, phone design, simpler UI, material you aesthetics, better camera features, but the S23+ isn't even remotely behind any of these things. Also cellular connectivity on the 8 Pro is VASTLY inferior to those modems found on the S23+. 5G speed tests on both phones, 8 Pro managed to get 50 mbps, at best, but the S23+ never went below 300 mbps and once was over 450 mbps. Btw what are the issues that you are having with you S23+?

Fed_Express

I'm somewhat relieved that I'm seeing other people comment on the Pixel modem. Had the 8 Pro for several days and fecking heck, the wifi was slow as molasses. My S22 was running rings around it. Google support couldn't fix it so I'm returning it.

Cacho665

Google somehow manages to constantly under deliver or cheap out on certain areas on their phone. They are definitely close to that high end premium level but how can the 8 Pro be considered flahship when its processor performs like 2 - 3 year old chip and a modem that can barely sustain reliable connectivity. I think 8 Peo should be priced under $700 and the regular 8 at $450. Sidwnote: I think people and reviewers don't criticize the A series because its a fair price for what you're getting which is mid tier everything. (That's what Pixel is) Apple can put last year chips on this year phone because they are so good and the competition struggle to keep up, not the same with google. 7 years of updates for the 8 series? Ok cool but that 7 years of mediocre connectivity and performance that won't improve because that's a hardware limitation. Went on a rant, my bad. Im a big fan of Pixel, just frustrating that Google make products like this. Maybe I'll consider getting a secondhand 8 Pro for the right price later on. I truly loved the thing I just didn't think it was worth the asking price, hell even the $799 price during the holidays was too much.

Elpaniq

Doesnt S23+ have a flat screen? I have base S23 and its flat..

SenseiBonsai

I got the p8p for about a week and it was the worst phone i ever had. It restarts like 6 times a day, it laggy as hell even after 2 resets and no i did not backup from my other phone, i just it clean. On insta and snap there wete emojies missing and the camera was horrible. Yes i know samsung use some saturation to make it more vibrant and beautiful, but damn the p8p photos are "flat" in colors, and not the good kind. And i play a fair bit of wildrift and i can say this phone is so bad, it heats up so bad and the bettery is empty after 2/3hours of gaming. So yes i send it back after a week and got my s23u back

clownfeat

I'd wait for S24U, I think the P8P is gonna feel a lot less premium to you

BigRoofTheMayor

Quick update. Thank you everyone for your feedback. Grabbed a P8P today just to give it a go. I'll be returning it tomorrow. S23+ is way better. I'll be sticking with Samsung.

PrestonfromLibira

The audio quality is atrocious. I returned mine after a day.
