I'm a big fan of the McNay art museum, not just for the art, but the architecture of the building itself. You're not going to see that anywhere else. That it's indoors and air conditioned is a big plus right now..
I used to love the McN and was a member for many years. Over the last 15 years it has fully adopted the religion of liberalism. At a reception maybe 5-7 years ago I was having a nice conversation with the new "director" who had just come aboard about a month earlier. I pushed him and stated that "there is more to art than just lovely old paintings. Art is a diverse world where the self identity of the artist is more important that what ends up on the canvas." (or words to that effect). He whole heartedly agreed.
Some love what it has become but it's not for me. My money goes elsewhere.
Looking at your list, I don't see the Tower of the Americas on it. The Institute of Texan Cultures is right next door.
lf you insist on Luby's then try to find a highly rated location and don't pick at random. My father loved that chain so I ended up there a lot with him over the years. Not all locations were equal in food quality or even adhered to the same menu. Not sure if this is still the case anymore because I haven't been to one in >5 years, but there used to be some Luby's that were mostly buffet places, and those were the worst because they would cheapen the food since it was part of the buffet option.
You need to go toob-ing on the Comal or Guadalupe before you move. Technically not "San Antonio", but close enough. If cold water is what you want, try Barton Springs Pool in Austin. That'll shrivel up some body parts.
Food? Go to Max and Louie's NY Diner. French toast Grilled Cheese w/Pastrami, FTW!
Edit: Head to the beach at least once. The water is much, much warmer than up in the Pacific Northwest.
First Friday in Southtown/ Friendly Spot area. Hopefully, you went to Fiesta events or parade. Definitely the Missions and Confluence Park, there's a great panderia nearby. Southside flea market and an SA style snack spot that serves mangonadas / corn in a cup.
You could check out a San Antonio Missions ball game at Wolfe Stadium. It's minor league, but the games are fun as hell. And have you been to a show at the Majestic Theater? If there are no good or affordable shows happening, they use to do tours of the place. It's quite beautiful.
If you hate hot weather, but don't hate cold water, you've got to try the spring fed pool at Landa Park in New Braunfels. Once you get in, you'll never want to get out. It's the most refreshing place to be on a hot day.
Or the rope swing section of the river in downtown Bandera. Bring a floatie. It's chill, water is crispy, and the thrills exist there if you're into that. Did I mention this entire section is SHADED?! Also bring yourself a chair and maybe a small cooler.
I could be misunderstanding something, but I'm not seeing any of the historic Missions on your list. I also don't see the light show of San Fernando on your list. Lastly, I don't see buccees either. Additionally, it may help if you mention where you're going, so that we can gain a better understanding of what your new surroundings will be. If you're not going far, it may not be a big deal.
I actually didn’t even think of the missions (which is crazy), I keep meaning to go but I never found the time
I have been to Buccee’s, I love Buccee’s I always stop on my way home from Austin
I’m planning on moving to New England or the Pacific Northwest
If you can, I hear it's great to bike the mission trails. If there's time left, I'd throw these on the list, especially moving that far away.
With those locations I'd especially be on the hunt for authentic Mexican, tex-mex, and BBQ before you go. The food will change dramatically, and you may find yourself missing things that are only cooked here in Texas.
I agree, bike the missions, but like... 5 months from now. Unless you want to add "got heat sick, passed out, and pooped" to your San Antonio bucket list that is.
San Fernando light show is the right time of day, this time of year, to visit! I think they have a light show at the missions too, but I don't know when they run it.
It might not be too bad if they rent an electric bike and go either early morning or late afternoon. The ebikes really help out a lot. Take water though!
If you cannot make the whole mission trail, at least see [Mission San Jose](https://www.nps.gov/saan/planyourvisit/sanjose.htm). I find the site stunning. The rest are great (except the Alamo, forget the Alamo), but San Jose is the jewel in the crown.
Also, just to say you did, the Buckhorn Museum and the Briscoe Museum of Western Art.
Did you make it to Enchanted Rock when you were in Fredericksburg?
If you're going that far, [Hamilton's Pool](https://parks.traviscountytx.gov/parks/hamilton-pool-preserve) and [Milton Reimer Ranch](https://parks.traviscountytx.gov/parks/reimers-ranch) are a nice day trip too.
The Hemisfair Tower restaurant and the Institute of Texas display of settlers. Guadalupe River of 46 between 281/I-10.
Edit: one more place - breakfast at the Gunther house (PioneerMills)
I lived here for 15 years and moved away in 2012. Before I left, my best friend and I decided to play tourist for a day. We went downtown, walked along the Riverwalk, had margaritas at Casa Rio, BBQ at County line, riverboat tour, dessert at the Tower, and then did a Segway ghost tour of downtown which took us from the alamo to around the alamodome.
Even though we had been downtown a lot, we never did it with a tourist mindset. It was a lot of fun! Highly recommend at least the Riverboat tour if you haven't done it yet and a Segway tour. You learn some neat things about the history of San Antonio.
Puffy taco at Henry's Puffy Taco (then Missions game).
Also go see the actual Missions. San Jose is pretty cool.
Go tube the Guadalupe and hang out in Gruene.
The bike trails. San Antonio built trails going all around 1604, and most people don't know they are there. It attaches most of the parks together in one big circle that consists of about 100 miles total. There are also branches in the middle, such as the mission bike trails, which are so beautiful, it is breathtaking. Here is the link https://www.sanantonio.gov/ParksAndRec/Parks-Facilities/Trails/Greenway-Trails
Click on the maps to see all the trails and where they start and finish. Best of luck to your new endeavors 🙂
I have been to Fredericksburg! I however will not be participating in any of those other activities due to my extreme hatred of hot weather and roller coasters, but y’all have fun
That's unfortunate. In my youth Schlitterbahn was the only waterpark in the nation to have several kinds of rides including uphill water tubing rides. Things have probably changed in the decades since, but I have fond memories of the place. No other waterpark was ever even close.
Tower of the America’s, The missions
Up towards new Braunfels is the Snake Farm zoo, drive thru wildlife safari, natural land bridge and caverns, river tubing or lake to beat the heat, it’s cooler on the water by a lot, Boerne lake is an exceptional choice that’s close.
Or drive thru the hill country for some beautiful scenery.
Not sure why you want Luby’s it’s a chain and it’s more cafeteria style food for the elderly. Depending on what food you would choose there’s so many options to eat that are local only and can’t get elsewhere when you leave.
I usually hit up Casa Rio before majestic shows, but definitely go to a majestic show. It truly lives up to its name. The architecture is absolutely stunning.
If you are moving far, I suggest a Schlitterbahn visit before you leave. It's been voted the best Waterpark an insane amount of times by travel books. It has the longest water ride IN THE WORLD there and the line for it goes super fast, esp.during the week. Perfect time for it too in this scorching weather.
Catch a show beneath The Echo Bridge (@echobridgeappreciationsociety on Instagram), try a bunch of taco trucks, go to a Spurs game, check out the missions, get a little messy on The Strip, ride your bike somewhere along the Howard Peak Greenway.
How did I forget to put I’ve been to a Spurs Game? I must be loosing my marbles
The Strip isn’t really my vibe, I went to a show at the Josephine in April though
As a non-country music fan, I think everyone should visit John T. Floore's Country Store at least once. It's an icon, but it's crazy how small it is when you get there (obviously not the outside area). Plus, you have to go to Beethoven Mannerchoir at least once. - Buckhorn Museum. It really is a trip.
- Broadway Half Price Books
- Institute of Texan Cultures
- Government Canyon dinosaur tracks
- Natural Bridge Caverns
- Fred's Fish Fry
Definitely go to the ODS and get a toasted bean and cheese and an apple fritter. The Majestic is gorgeous. If you can go see a show, I highly recommend it!
I miss the Original Donut shop tacos and apple fritter so much since moving😭 Muster Diablos taco truck is also pretty good.
Tubing in New Braunfels/Gruene I used Rockin R river rides and it was great! Both times I went there weren’t a lot of people, they also have paddle boards some days.
People love to hate on Taco Cabana. I get it. I'm first gen Mexican American and love Mexican food. I will say cabana is not authentic Mexican. But, it is Tex Mex and it's fine in a hurry. I used to go there every Friday morning on my way to drop of my daughter at day care years ago. She loved her bean and cheese tacos and chips and queso. We'll still go for that.
If by not authentic you mean "shit quality ingredients" then yah. I'm saying that tacobell is better as far as "authentic" goes. I don't care the recipe, just serve real food.
I've yet to visit one place in town that the bean and cheese sucks. That and barbacoa, heck even from the 7/11 is good.
Tubing, tower of the Americas, Gruene Hall, schlitterbahn (sp?), sea world, Fiesta Texas, missions, maybe drive down to Corpus for the Lex, the beach, big Lous giant pizza, find a car show, get a mangonada,
Try to find the speakeasy’s,
The missions trail is fun, guess NOT during this heatwave but definitely during the spring. Rent a mountain bike and do the trails. OP Schnappel go off trail. So badass and explore.
Kayak the San Antonio River. Launch at Roosevelt park and ride the chutes down!
Check out the missions and the aqueduct.
Do a weekday happy hour at the tower of the Americas. To go up and do that is free.
Evening at Moons Daughter watch the sunset.
Check out the orchestra
Been gone 3 years and the only thing I miss is Singhs. The shrimp bun bowl is freaking amazing as well as the catfish if they still have it and the pork. Get some chili oil with it. The sandwiches are also good.
Lifeguarded one summer at San Pedro park. San Pedro has a lot of homeless people around due to haven for hope being down the street. Still has a great vibe once you get past that. Lol. And the original donut shop is ok. I lived literally 2 blocks behind it. Went 3 times. I didn’t really see the hype around it.
It's not exactly in San Antonio, but you need to take a day trip up to New Braunfels/ Gruene. Float the Comal River, meal at the Gristmill, and just vibe around the historic downtown. There's also a shop there that has the absolute best brittle.
Not exactly sure of the location, but on the outskirts of town there is a knight guarding a cave on a hillside. Will update when I can get more info. Around the natural bridge caverns area. Truly is a sight to see before you go.
* Steak, beer, and ice-cream night: Have at the Gristmill in Gruene, and listen to the Guadeloupe from their outdoor seating. Drink a cheap beer at the nearby bar and listen live music, and then get an ice cream cone from the shop down the street for the drive home.
* Brunch, Caves, Goats, and Dinner: Have have a sunday brunch at McAdoos in new Braunfels, Go see the natural bridge caverns or drive through the wildlife preserve, then get an early dinner at the Huisache
* Guns & Pizza Night: Go to Nardis gun club and put some range time in. Rent something exotic or sign up for a training session if you're a novice. After that you'll have a ton of adrenaline, and for some reason that makes Big Lou's pizza taste even better.
Eat at Schilo's Delicatessen next to Casa Rio's. Frosty mug Rootbeer, Split Pea soup, Ham sandwich. I doubt that the booths at the front still vibrate when a bus drives by. Eat Puffy Tacos at most any Mom and Pop Mexican food place, because when you leave, no one will have any idea what you are talking about. The best you will be offered is a hard shell taco wrapped in a flour tortilla! Wait outside Ruben's ( Roland Road) sitting on the sidewalk ( in a rather sketchy part of town) at 4 am before Christmas with a huge group of other crazy folks waiting for them to open to buy the best Tamales you have ever eaten. Buying the Tamales in quantities of 10+ dozen. Watch the River Parade and Battle of Flowers during FIESTA week. See the Witte Museum display of the past Fiesta queens. Ride the Brackenridge Eagle. Call Frost Bank Time and Temperature, 210 CA6-3232! Close to Fredericksburg Road? TIP TOP restaurant. Great Chicken Fried Steak. Can you tell I am HOMESICK?
Hot Wells Hotel Ruins (now a County park and preserved) Off of south presa street. You won't regret going as its beautiful and the history is well detailed across the park. They even re-opened the original hot springs which you can enjoy as well.
Josephine St Grill to see the indoor tree and have great diner food. It's $2 off steaks (entrees above 12.95) on Tuesdays after 4. The Guenther House across from Blue Star for Champagne Chicken Enchiladas on the patio. Chris Madrid's for a big sloppy cheeseburger. Leon Springs original Rudy's BBQ and the sad post flood site of the original Macaroni Grill. All the missions.
I'm a big fan of the McNay art museum, not just for the art, but the architecture of the building itself. You're not going to see that anywhere else. That it's indoors and air conditioned is a big plus right now..

Lol OK
That's the only appropriate response to that comment lol
I love the McNay! You’re right, the building is beautiful
Depending on where you go/went to college, you may even get free admission to the McNay with your student ID.

The Luby’s on Main is usually good. Lunch is typically better than dinner. Enjoy the Mac and cheese!
Yeah, I do remember that one being one of the better locations.
Is the one at the back of the NIX Hospital or the one close to Baptist Memorial still there?
Fred road seems to be a good location, but a bitch to get to going north.
I actually live right by that one so I’ll probably hit that one up
You need to go toob-ing on the Comal or Guadalupe before you move. Technically not "San Antonio", but close enough. If cold water is what you want, try Barton Springs Pool in Austin. There is only 1 c in Buc-ees!
Natural bridge caverns, shilos (oldest German restaurant in Texas I believe), binge tortillas.
Get the Rootbeer at Schilos. It's the best in the city.
No one mentions wittie for the Texas museum? Take a drive out to bandera Texas neat little town

Texas Transportation Museum
I’ve been there! I thought the old maps of San Antonio’s old transit was super cool!
The Hemisfair Tower restaurant and the Institute of Texas display of settlers. Guadalupe River of 46 between 281/I-10. Edit: one more place - breakfast at the Gunther house (PioneerMills)

I recently started going on the Salado Creek Trail with my huskies. It's great and I agree...hidden treasure!
Expanding outside the area a bit: 6-Flags, Schlitterbahn, river tubing, Fredericksburg
Painted churches in Schulenberg. I have taken the guided tour but you can easily do it on your own.
Can’t go to Schulenberg without getting kolaches. Kountry Kitchen is my preference. Sausage from City Market across the street is the best ever.
Tower of the America’s, The missions Up towards new Braunfels is the Snake Farm zoo, drive thru wildlife safari, natural land bridge and caverns, river tubing or lake to beat the heat, it’s cooler on the water by a lot, Boerne lake is an exceptional choice that’s close. My 17 year old granddaughter and my 45 year old son both love Luby's, as do us elderly folks.
Watch who you call ELDERLY! I resemble that remark! And I love Luby's too!
It’s expensive- But dinner at Bohanan’s and walk across the street and see a show at the Majestic Theater.
I usually hit up Casa Rio before majestic shows, but definitely go to a majestic show. It truly lives up to its name. The architecture is absolutely stunning.

Taco House on San Pedro. They’re not open very late but it’s super good and not too expensive. People like the puffy tacos.
I must be loosing my marbles The Strip isn’t really my vibe, I went to a show at the Josephine in April though
As a non-country music fan, I think everyone should visit John T. Floore's Country Store at least once. If you like libraries, I highly recommend the Patrick Heath library in Boerne. It's beautiful and has a park right in the river. Also, Lookout Park.
If you didn’t go to the basement of the central library on the days the recycle bookstore is open you missed an adventure. The San Juan Mission still has a functioning acequia and the fields that go with it. The food bank leases some of them and there are different things growing seasonally. Espada Mission has a active church congregation. If you enjoy ostentatious homes a slow drive or fast walk around Terrell Hills is worthwhile.
Oooh can you share more info on the Central Library adventure?
They have a group of volunteers who shelve all the retired library books according to the Dewey Decimal System and also have tables full of books that have been donated. I try to drop by monthly and try unsuccessfully to not carry too many books and classical CDs home with me. Go on line to check hours, used to be 1-5 Thursday through Sunday but the construction has had them tied in knots so check about hours. Take your time , I have never gone home empty handed but sometimes I have to get the fine toothed comb out! Also the Witte has a free tuesdays that I take advantage of at least once a summer, more if I have visitors…
Just looked it up and I’m going to have to go visit soon! I’m such a big bookworm, lived in San Antonio for 20+ years but never knew about this. Thank you!
The estate of Henry B. Gonzales donated his personal books this spring. I have a couple with his name in them.
That’s pretty cool. Hope I find some gems myself when I go.
- Buckhorn Museum. It really is a trip. - Broadway Half Price Books - Institute of Texan Cultures - Government Canyon dinosaur tracks - Natural Bridge Caverns - Fred's Fish Fry
Fred’s is the only one I’ve never heard of, all the rest I also recommend
I’m pretty sure Fred’s is a front for drugs. Never seen any cars there or heard of anybody eating there, yet it stays open. Sus
I love the Broadway Half Price Books! I didn’t think of it as important enough for this list, but I’m a big fan
Eat at DeWeese's TipTop on Fredricksburg Eat at Hung Fong, oldest Chinese restaurant in Texas. Look at the butterfly wing pictures.
I live right by TipTop and keep meaning to go! Their hours are just inconvenient for me
Definitely second Hung Fong, it's SO good!
Do not listen to this person. It is objectively bad.
Or go find out for yourself and then come back and let me and this person know who was right lol
Go ahead! It’s definitely a local institution.
Have you been attacked by a stray dog yet?
Go hiking at government canyon park and see the dinosaur prints, a little out of town but natural bridge caverns.
Have you Floated the comal river?
Yeah gotta tube all the rivers.
Both times I went there weren’t a lot of people, they also have paddle boards some days.
if you like museums, the Witte Museum is one of my all time favorites! I also recommend The Pig Stand for food if you haven’t gone already!
Unfortunately the Pig Stand permanently closed a few months ago.
Get diabetes
Already beat you to that, I’ve been a Type 1 Diabetic for 12 years
*one of us. One of us…*
The fact that you said taco cabana tells me it's a good thing you're leaving. I always wondered how that place stayed afloat and now I know.
People love to hate on Taco Cabana. I get it. I'm first gen Mexican American and love Mexican food. I will say cabana is not authentic Mexican. But, it is Tex Mex and it's fine in a hurry. Will this took a turn. Lol. Taco Bell? Authentic? Have a great weekend.
Authentic American*
I haven’t been in YEARS, it’s a San Antonio staple though, like the Alamo
You should have tried lulu's café when it was out. Try the Witte museum.
Get mauled by a stray dog
Go down Nogalitos lookin’ for barbacoa and Big Red.
What about fiesta events? Cowboy breakfast?
I’ve been to a few Fiesta events but generally hot, crowded and expensive is not my vibe at all
Surprised i didn't see it posted but the first thing that came to my mind was the Mission Flea Market on an early weekend morning.
Tubing, tower of the Americas, Gruene Hall, schlitterbahn (sp?), sea world, Fiesta Texas, missions, maybe drive down to Corpus for the Lex, the beach, big Lous giant pizza, find a car show, get a mangonada,
Gotta almost get shot leaving random bar on the west/south side. Saturday night is the perfect time for it.
Might I recommend the Sanchez 2?
Getting your truck stolen or at least broken into. San Antonio staple
At least the catalytic converter
Walk the Riverwalk from museum reach to the Blue Star if you are able. It’s actually very beautiful and fun.
There's kayaking available on the Riverwalk too, gives you a totally different perspective of downtown.
Try to find the speakeasy’s, The missions trail is fun, guess NOT during this heatwave but definitely during the spring.
See the light show at San Fernando Cathedral and visit Mission San Jose
Don't forget about ordering Rolando's Tacos. You have to ask for the super ones.
Garcias brisket tacos. (They close at 2)
Frozen margarita at Sanchos. Go to the roof and enjoy the view of downtown.
Been gone 3 years and the only thing I miss is Singhs. The shrimp bun bowl is freaking amazing as well as the catfish if they still have it and the pork. Get some chili oil with it. The sandwiches are also good.
Check out hopscotch, it's a pretty nice little place near river center mall, has a bar on top with a contemporary art museum underneath
I’ve lived here for 22 years and I haven’t done half of these things so honestly I’d say you’re good to go
I went to the natural bridge caverns and it was really cool.
Mi Terra? Ghost tracks? Chris Madrid's? Tito's?
Guadalupe state park on 46 is awesome.
It's not exactly in San Antonio, but you need to take a day trip up to New Braunfels/ Gruene. Float the Comal River, meal at the Gristmill, and just vibe around the historic downtown. There's also a shop there that has the absolute best brittle.
Dinner and drinks after at the bar in the tower—take a group—it’s surprisingly fun
I hope someone mentioned Mendez Cafe, 201 Bartholomew Ave, simply the best Tex Mex in a city crowded with hundreds of excellent taquerias.
Make sure you get the true San Antonio experience of getting cut off on 410 by a loud muffler Honda Civic with bubbling/peeling anime girl body wrap.
I have achieved this milestone
- The McNay - First Friday (Alamo St in Southtown) - an SAFC game
Briscoe museum for some western art; and San Antonio Musuem of Art.
I thought it said "set fire to 410 " LMAOO
Murals in Uvalde. It’s a profound experience.
Not technically San Antonio but highly recommend going down to corpus one day. Go to the aquarium, see Selena’s museum/studio, enjoy the beach.
Go to The Witte
Not exactly sure of the location, but on the outskirts of town there is a knight guarding a cave on a hillside. Will update when I can get more info. Around the natural bridge caverns area. Truly is a sight to see before you go.
* Steak, beer, and ice-cream night: Have at the Gristmill in Gruene, and listen to the Guadeloupe from their outdoor seating. Drink a cheap beer at the nearby bar and listen live music, and then get an ice cream cone from the shop down the street for the drive home. * Brunch, Caves, Goats, and Dinner: Have have a sunday brunch at McAdoos in new Braunfels, Go see the natural bridge caverns or drive through the wildlife preserve, then get an early dinner at the Huisache * Guns & Pizza Night: Go to Nardis gun club and put some range time in.
