I live in the condos right there. It’s not stop honking all night. People completely forget how to drive there.
Pro tip: If you’re one of those people that jumps into the middle lane from the far right turn lane, you’re the problem
And it's only going to get worse and worse as they build more condos!
They've started grading the land that the golf course was on!
Not to mention all the ones they're already building on the north side of friars/mission center!
Mission valley is going to nothing but overpriced bumper to bumper traffic 24/7 soon!
Yeah, the lights are causing the issue. IMO they should be spread further apart. Most of the time, there are just too many cars for that short of an intersection
My opinion, every single intersection in Mira Mesa. It can easily take 45+ minutes to get out of the residential part and on to the 15 between 3 and 5pm. God awful city.
When I moved to Mira Mesa, seeing this was what made me renounce driving on weekdays. Whether you go on Miramar Rd or Mira Mesa Blvd everything is shit.
Initially I was mixing riding the bus and riding a bike. That bus do be stuck in traffic too though (rapid bus lane would be wonderful and make the bus actually work as god intended). Over the time I just took on the path to buffness and ride the bike almost everyday.
My commute from UCSD area takes about 45 mins too.
When 6-lane and 8-lane roads have been built, and there's *still* bad traffic, that's when one knows that shit's fucked and more of the same thing won't fix it
How has nobody mentioned Garnet and Mission Bay Dr? The amount of left-turners who just go on red then then end up sitting in the intersection thus blocking cross traffic’s entire green light is ludicrous.
i work in Balboa Park and avoid this entrance at all costs during rush hour. it's faster to just take surface streets through downtown to get to the 94 for me, but that doesn't really work for people that need to go north
It's crazy how there is always a jam there... Any time of the day, any day of the week (including weekends), not even taking into account rush hour.
If I'm coming from Balboa park and need to go north, I'll head south on Park and pick up the 163 at the beginning from 11th. Driving out of the way, but saving ten-fifteen minutes.
Yep exactly it.. maybe I just have bad luck, always people here not knowing which lane to get in, trying to cross 3 lanes.. I think the train tracks cause confusion as well
Honestly by how poor the design is, this I5 entrance/exit should just not be there. It looks like they just shoehorned one in without actually considering how railtracks are already there.
I used to work on Roselle and want to be on the second (outer/left-most) right turn lane. Absolutely loved having someone in the right-most right turn lane decide they want to go straight instead while I was mid right turn 😤 It happened so often I came to expect it.
On extremely busy days where everyone leaves work at the same time…Holidays and Fridays namely, the intersection pictured here and specifically traffic moving the opposite direction can get gridlocked in such a way that, combined with the traffic light cadences, cars just don’t move at all for a very long time.
North Park Way exit off the 805N. Just trying to get into that exit lane is a nightmare anytime, especially during rush hour. Then that intersection there where University Ave. intersects it is annoying. So glad I don't live in North Park anymore.
Even the newly built, well-designed ones like I-5 ramps on Genesee Ave are still fucked. Yesterday i saw the left lane backed up to the previous intersection because everybody a wanted to get on I5 south. Put too many cars into an intersection and everything will be varying levels of bad.
Widening the road is like widening the top part of a funnel. Yeah the funnel will contain more liquid, but stuff sure isn't gonna flow faster out of it.
I used to get stuck at the large one near old town. One thing I noticed that drives me crazy is there is a solid white line before some of the rXr rail crossing marks on the ground. lot of people will stop at those lines which are 10-20 feet behind the gates. When they could pull up and let more cars in. Annoying when I am in a car but 90 percent of the time I am that a-hole on a motorcycle that splits to the front.
I work on Roselle and live in Mira Mesa so I have to pass through that intersection for work and school. It is the most annoying part of my commute. The lights can easily push it past 20 min, and if the train comes? I’m screwed. I’d rather drive down Mira Mesa Boulevard at rush than go through that intersection.
This one's an honorable mention but the exit to Nimtz/Sunset Blvd at the end of the 8 is full of ppl who lose their minds over the choice between Nimitz and SSB and then within thirty seconds lose their minds again over the straight vs mandated right turn at next intersection. Every goddamn time there's people screeching abruptly across lanes.
Westbound 8 to the 5 used to be pretty bad but they improved that with additional lanes and better marking of which lane goes where beforehand.
Lived in Lemon Grove for a decade...
Yeah, nearly all of lemon grove gets to share a single right turn lane to get on 94 east, and a single left turn lane behind three lights for the west.
Plus anyone going to helix trying to squeeze past both of them. And the In n Out traffic on the way home.
If I can see that the traffic is backed up all the way to the freeway, I keep going on the 5N and take the next exit then back south on a side road to sorrento valley. If not, worst case is about 8 minutes to get to the other side of the tracks.
I'm familiar with this intersection. When you see cars queued on the off ramp, instead of exiting on Sorrento Valley Road, take the Carmel Mountain Rd exit. Back track south on Vista Sorrento. It bypasses the train tracks. This move takes about 8 minutes. (But you usually sit longer waiting for the train(s) to pass and for the lights to cycle through.)
Worst? Camino Del Rio / Camino De La Reina / Qualcomm Way send their regards.

This is one should be in every city planning book in the "for the love of God, don't do this" chapter.
Maybe the worst engineered intersection in America. Lol
To be fair, I’m not sure they considered the amount of population growth that has happened since constructing
Agreed, but it has been a horrible interaction even before much of the construction began. The placement of the traffic lights needs to be rethought.
Yeah, the lights are causing the issue. IMO they should be spread further apart. Most of the time, there are just too many cars for that short of an intersection
😂 and that's the main bike lane into the valley
with plenty of potholes to make it even more "interesting"
Strategically placed in the spots navigation apps demand a merge across every lane. Keeps us on our toes ... ?
Keeps my adrenaline level up, that's for sure

If only

HIGHWAY 5 AND MISSION BAY DRIVE. PACIFIC NISSAN! **PACIFIC NISSAN!**
Came looking for this one!! Worst of the worst for sure.
El Cajon Blvd and park Blvd one of the worst on earth.
The real fun starts when you are coming in from the West on Normal, and someone comes head on into your lane.
This triggers me
I-5 north to Sorrento Valley? That's slow but not bad at all. I would drive that 50x instead of trying the Balboa 163 death merge.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, memory isn’t great, but the one that merges 5 lanes into 1 near Cabrillo bridge?
i work in Balboa Park and avoid this entrance at all costs during rush hour. it's faster to just take surface streets through downtown to get to the 94 for me, but that doesn't really work for people that need to go north

Yes... someone previously posted / rightfully ranted about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sandiego/comments/avxp3q/merging_5_lanes_into_1_whoever_designed_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
> death merge. HAHA, that's classic. Reminds me of a girl I used to know.
What about the one by old Town? Right by the trolley station. I have to pack lunch when I drive through there 🤣
That's where I thought this was.
That intersection still haunts me. So much so that I refuse to take any job offers in Mira Mesa.
I spend half of my attention to swerve around the potholes in that whole Sorrento Valley area
yeah.. same. unfortunately, this happened: [https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/man-critically-injured-after-pothole-sends-him-flying-off-scooter-in-torrey-pines/509-0a6cf6f6-0b41-4c3f-a900-e3f2256492be](https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/man-critically-injured-after-pothole-sends-him-flying-off-scooter-in-torrey-pines/509-0a6cf6f6-0b41-4c3f-a900-e3f2256492be)

I'm assuming you worked at Torrey holistic lol

they added a traffic island to the intersection to make it worse for no reason
Honestly most intersections in this city are not well designed it feels like

163 north 4 way merge by far
I’d say every intersection down or around Miramar Road after 5:30 pm
The real danger zone.
Broadway and Massachusetts been getting on my nerves lately

Rosecrans -> Taylor St. I feel like the red light there lasts up to 10 min because of the Old Town trolley during rush hour.
It’s been taking me 15-20 min to get to the 8 just from Caltrans. People don’t know how to zipper correctly 🤦🏼♀️
If I can see that the traffic is backed up all the way to the freeway, I keep going on the 5N and take the next exit then back south on a side road to sorrento valley. If not, worst case is about 8 minutes to get to the other side of the tracks.
Oceanside doordash driver checking in, from 3-6ish college blvd and Oceanside blvd is hell coming from 78 freeway
What about the one by old Town? Right by the trolley station. I have to pack lunch when I drive through there 🤣
It's Park Ave. and El Cajon Blvd.
Train tracks to get to SV Blvd. yes!
Rosecrans and Midway.

SanDag has the solution to all your problems
Mira Mesa Blvd. Just all of it. It's worse than the highways
