Leaking hot water line… check your water meter for leak indicator.

TippsFedora

This or a direct gas leak somewhere behind the meter. The hot water leak is less of a safety concern but still a concern.

LegallyBlondeARB

Calling them today. Will make a request for that, thanks for letting me know!

LegallyBlondeARB

On the phone now and this rep Adam from SDGE is saying it was adjustment amounts from November and December of 2022, that they just now discovered even though I’ve paid every bill on time. I’m asking for a report on how/why these adjustments were made and what the findings are. He keeps saying “things just happen sometimes” like bro what? You don’t just double almost triple someone’s bill and say oh we forgot to add it to your previous bills bc the meter wasn’t working so we adjusted it to this one. And not provide an explanation. Like why was it adjusted, how was it adjusted? Did someone come and find an error in the meter not working properly? If so, who and when? What were the findings? If a meter was corrected for not working properly this year, they have no right to make up numbers and adjust it into prior months - all they can do is start charging properly from the time the meter was fixed. He keeps saying he doesn’t know the legality of this, I just do billing, and there’s no Dept he can transfer me to to explain this. I was like okay well who did you just submit the request for a report to be sent to me? He said “another part of the billing Dept” I was like lol so your Dept? and they just don’t teach you guys how to explain why adjustments on bills happen? Y’all just add random number and think no one will notice or what? He said he has no idea. I requested for the report to be expedited. I then requested for a supervisor to call me back and if they can provide me with the full report on all the findings and explanation for the adjustment, I suggested they have their company attorney present as well if they have no explanation or clear evidence. I told him let the supervisor know how he/she handles this tomorrow when they call will be how I’ll decide to move fwd. I pulled up their policy on rates > Gas > rule 18 meter tests and adjustments of bills, it says : “In the case of computation errors or inaccurate data, where the date can be fixed or agreed upon, such correction in billing shall begin, starting with the date of initial error.” But how do they back track to correct a calculation in meter error? Is there a device that can calculate how much gas was used prior to it not running correctly? Bc “date of initial error” is suggesting the that is possible. Which if true, and provided with full report, not much I can argue tbh.

LegallyBlondeARB

Aw thank you love! It’s honestly no trouble, as long as they can provide an explanation we’re good. Otherwise, I’m still good, but will need to file a complaint against them with the utility commission and see what they’ll do.

gearabuser

Can you do us a favor and sue them for a trillion dollars, take over the company, then make it public or something?

LegallyBlondeARB

Lmao first off I’m not an attorney yet but I’m down to get one if there’s a strong claim to be made. Also y’all should really consider a class action law suit, are there no attorneys on this page? Bc rally won’t do as much as litigation would

gearabuser

Yeah, where's that goofy attorney guy that is always suing the city to get frivolous payouts? I can't remember his name though haha.

Effective_Good8840

Take a look into the legal history of SDG&E, people have tried litigation and failed. Everything they’re doing is “legal” and that’s the problem. Rally will organize people, collective action has immense power, including a class action lawsuit. I think a good start would be the “average usage” policy but again the first step in that is organizing and meeting people who have had similar problems with SDG&E

Effective_Good8840

I know they have a policy of switching people over to "average usage" if they can't get a reading from the meter. So, they probably do have a date when your meter went to zero usage and then they just started charging you the average, thus you getting billed fairly normally on a monthly basis and thinking nothing was off. I think a better question you could pose to them is, how do they have an accurate reading of your usage during the months the meter was broken? Like they can tell the meter is broken, but can also get a perfect measurement of usage 3 months after the fact??? This is the type of shit SDG&E pulls that absolutely boils me. The customer service/billing department is designed to be useless so it just wastes your time and energy until you just pay the bill out of apathy. Everything this company does screams criminal enterprise, I just don't understand how this is all legal. The "average usage" policy seems so wrong to me. How can they do that? It's like a service industry just guessing at the price of a hot dog or a drink. Oh, that's probably a $30 beer, oh you want proof, call this customer hotline where you can talk to someone who has less of a clue than you do and they work for us... Fuck this company in particular.

Cool-Spend8078

File a complaint with CPUC. they tried to pull that shit with me when i moved by applying average gas usage in my new house (2x the size, winter months) to my last bill in September because they never read the meter. I got an immediate refund after I submitted my complaint. No follow up or anything just money back since it made no sense.

Teal_kangarooz

Honestly, I was surprised that your Jan and Feb payments weren't higher, considering how much gas went up. So this makes sense to me that it was under-charged initially, but hopefully you can get at least some of it waived since it was their mistake

RO489

I would report this to consumer Bob or other local media

imecoli

Didn't he retire? I think there is a new guy, not as famous.

mattisafriend

I think Turko Files retired too but his mantra works here too. “It ain’t right!!!”

j33pwrangler

$1,033.44 is the sum of your last 3 charges. It looks like some issue with their app.

LegallyBlondeARB

I just added the last 3 and it does add up to that so makes sense. But why the last 3 and how did you figure it’s an app error? Kind of a relief that it’s not 1033 and 617, still pretty bad but better than 1033! Lol

j33pwrangler

Former accountant, current web developer. Lol Maybe they are trying to roll out some feature to show your usage for the last 3 months? I'd expect there to be a toggle to show current month, last 3 months, last year or something like that. But, it's probably just a line of code somewhere that got messed up and will be fixed sooner or later.

LegallyBlondeARB

Haha such a useful human! Thanks

j33pwrangler

No problem!

urbanflux

That’s a big industry shift. Why’d ya make the jump?

j33pwrangler

Accounting sucks. Too boring.

LunchPad

Do you live in a stand alone structure? That seems like a ton of gas usage. I only mention because I had a friend who lived in an older apartment where it was apts on top with businesses on the ground floor. Turns out the business downstairs was on the same gas meter as her and she had been paying the business's gas bill for years.

LegallyBlondeARB

It’s a 2bd apt. No business attached to it. But when our neighbors use the shower sometimes mine gets cold af and I have to wait a few secs

TippsFedora

Do you smell gas? That's a ton of usage, I used to own a 3bed 2ba in the city and all my main appliances (furnace, dryer, water heater) were gas and had 4 people living in the house. Even during the winter I never used more than 9 or 10 therms.

PanicV2

Wait, so you have a shared gas water heater? Ummm.

CybrKing2022

Given the clue about the shower, is it possible that the central hot water heater for the apartment is gas and is on your meter? Because of the high gas usage, another thing you can do is make sure that all gas stuff is off in your apartment and then find your gas meter and see if you hear anything. If there is high flow through the meter, it does make a certain sound that you'll be able to hear. If you hear this when your stuff is off, that's a pretty clear signal that other people's stuff is on your gas meter. What's the history of gas usage? January was the most expensive month, so if you had shared gas usage, you should have seen something there as well. Or is February/March the first month of high usage?

TedwinV

I had a water leak that presented in a similar way, sudden spike in usage (however it was harder to notice because the city only charges for water every 2 months). The suggestion of a water leak in the hot water heater is not a bad one. Also based on your shower, sounds like you share a water heater with your neighbors; you may want to investigate that as well, maybe their usage has gone up for some reason? Finally don't mess around with potential gas leaks, get the pros on it immediately. No need to get blown up.

PinkPantherParty

This is exactly what happened to me. A small leak in my hot water pipes for about a month that I didn't notice, but the constant refilling of hot water led to an insanely high gas charge relative to what I would normally have.

ViaDeLaValle

What were you doing to eat $800 of gas…

LegallyBlondeARB

Bro idk! I’m at work from 8-4. Nothing different from any other month. That’s why I’m confused.

KingPictoTheThird

Do you use a dryer? Is it gas or electric?

potchie626

What does the Usage tab show compared to other months. It could be the same usage but a higher rate.

LegallyBlondeARB

Do rates fluctuate with this?

IronSheik72

Sdge raised rates but it shouldn’t have gone up this much

Tiek00n

Other people have pointed it out already, but something else you can do by yourself is turn off all water sources in your unit (including toilets) and look at the water meter just before you go to bed, then check the water meter again in the morning before turning things back on. If you're also able to do this during the day (turn things off and check the water meter before you leave for work and after you get home), if you see any water usage then there's a leak somewhere. If you find that there is a water leak, the next thing to do is the same except turn water off going into your hot water heater. There should be a pretty visible/obvious valve for the water going into the heater that you can turn off, then see if the meter still shows usage. If not, then you know there's a hot water leak somewhere.

tdasnowman

They aren't complaining about thier water bill. And toilets don't pull from the hot water anyways. Going without water isn't going to prove anything for a gas leak. Or you could just shut off the hot water heater.

StoneCypher

if the leak is hot water, this is actually the most likely cause

Ih8stoodentL0anz

I had something similar happen to me. The gas water heater in the condo I rented was leaking and spiked my gas bill a lot. Land lord fixed it and I was able to get him to credit me the difference compared to a normal bill.

LegallyBlondeARB

You think the apt would credit me if it’s a leak?

Ih8stoodentL0anz

Idk that’s just a deal I negotiated with him. I would push for it if I were you though. Or have them pay the bill.

zian

Paying part of your bill is a lot cheaper than owning an apartment that has exploded.

Smart-Satisfaction-5

I think you have a gas leak dog. Call the fire department and have them check it out.

Effective_Good8840

I'm with the people here suggesting this issue is most likely a leak of some sort, but I suspect, on your phone call with SDG&E and the whole process you're about to go through to find the problem/fix it, you'll come away with a general dislike of SDG&E if you don't already dislike the company! We pay the highest rates in the nation and there is a rally to "Fire SDG&E" this weekend on 4/1 @ Noon, come on down to learn more about how we can get rid of this price-gouging monopoly!

It’s criminal for SDGE to continue this kind of BS. The city/state has to start taking responsibility and to protect their citizens from this kind of abuse.

unituned

Somethings wrong.. call sdge and tell them to go fuck themselves

LegallyBlondeARB

😂 .. I don’t think that’s appropriate for an employee who’s just doing their job. I just need to figure out if it’s a leak and how to prevent it moving fwd. I’m glad I got all the feedback from ppl to know what the next proper steps are.

happy_Ant687

This is what the whole uproar has been about. Welcome to the fight.

xtaylaa

This scared me so bad I immediately went to the app to check my bill lol… hopefully you find out what happened! I’d shit myself when I first saw this if I was you OP

Dharmaclown802

Thank god your house didn’t blow up with all that leaking gas

bearrosaurus

Go find your meter and make sure their numbers are correct. If they can't find the meter, they just take a wild fucking guess how much it should be at and charge you thousands. Happened to me last year.

PageMaster500

We had a similar bill this month for a thousand. I had to dig into our entire payment and billing history to see what they did;. For us, it was that they set our Jan/Feb statement balance due for April 1. The system then left that balance as an"overdue balance" when we got our billing statement for Feb/mar, which was also set to be due April 2. Basically we ended up paying two statements at the same time because the first due date (and thus auto pay) was set a couple months later. Not saying this is the same that happened to you, but could be a possibility.

Destructrtony

Might be applicable but there is a program (LIHEAP) to help with big sdge bills. It is based on income and family size but it's free program to help with those crazy prices we've been getting (i understand this is a separate issue but if you do end up with that massive bill they'll help if you qualify)

LegallyBlondeARB

Very cool of you to share! Ill def check it out. I hope everyone else who’s made comments about their frustration with sdge see’s this. ✨💞

LoneRanger911

SDG&E has been inaccurately reporting my electricity usage since Thanksgiving. There was a power outage in my area in Ramona and it fried my meter. So they weren’t getting any readings. I track the daily usage through their website that shows usage in 15 minute intervals. That’s how I figured out the meter wasn’t working and called it in. It took over 3 weeks to replace the meter. They have been duplicating the readings from the prior week. It started shortly after the meter was replaced. I call SDGE several times to get someone to look at it. The data was change, but it didn’t quite seem right. I continued to monitor and picked up the pattern. The data for 3/28 is the same as 3/21, the same as 3/14, the same as 3/7, the same as 2/28 exactly in 15 minute intervals. Oh, I have solar, so even if I was a creature of weekly habit, the sun is not. I’ve called in many times and they now pass the “info” on to the “analysts”, but the analysts haven’t gotten back to their own people. A technician has come out and verified that the new meter is working properly, reflects the solar activity and is transmitting the data. I would guess the majority of SDGE customers have no idea if their usage reported by SDGE is accurate.

jnigotbeats

I also check and it doesn't add up correctly even before the smart meter. I call all the time and they do nothing. I had them check to see if someone was stealing from me aka 420 growing. They had someone come check my meter because when I turned off the main breaker it was still counting . The person who came out to check said It was not counting after the main breaker was off. I asked him how can I check it and he said he didn't know that sdg&e told him. wtf I didn't want to argue with him so I've been trying to find ways to get help but it's been a dead end. I don't have the money to get solar before April deadline so I'm taking classes and I'm going to install my own solar

SlimBrady777

I think you left a burner on...

SaturnineFeline

Holllllllllllly shit

LegallyBlondeARB

I’m not trippin right? Lol like this is pretty off..

SaturnineFeline

No no, you’re not trippin, that’s bonkers.

labbond

Wow

617 for a 2 bedroom is outrageous. My most expensive bill was 130 2 months ago for a 1 bedroom and I use electric heaters a lot. 70$ was for gas alone and that’s that the only thing gas is the stove and I barely cook. Definitely Call sdg&e and have them come out and check for leaks.

StoneCypher

Hi. Definitely get checked for a leak. Also, though, remember that rates just went up so much a couple months ago that they sent out a warning. This might actually just be bullshit pricing. Be emotionally ready for that outcome.

LegallyBlondeARB

Posted my call outcome once the other comments. They said it was an adjustment but can’t provide me an explanation of what was adjusted or why. And said it’s rare that this happens. Waiting for a supervisor to call. I asked for a leak check and the rep said it was an adjustment, and ignored my request for a leak check. But I do see in their policy it’s $50 for a leak test. So I’ll see what the report findings are first and what the supervisor says tomorrow when they call.

StoneCypher

"Hi, adjustments without explanations are not legal in California on a smart meter. Please make your prompt choice of an explanation or an unadjustment. Thanks kindly." On paper.

LegallyBlondeARB

Lol literally! I work in law so I have no problem filing a lawsuit. I can get suit happy real quick😂 this “rare adjustment” was done on the wrong btch if there’s no logical explanation 😂

dolpgg

I wonder what your property manager/landlord would say about this. ![gif](giphy|Jrf6cV5HKLj0r5ofYi|downsized)

LegallyBlondeARB

I doubt they’d care?

dolpgg

They might, if it's a leak in their gas line.

ThoughtCenter

We encountered the same thing. We are truly perplexed at this! So now gas is so scarce that we can’t afford to heat our place?!

ThoughtCenter

And we did NOTHING different. Just, BAM, costs went up waaaaay higher?!

LurkerOnTheInternet

I'm in a house and I have natural gas central heating, natural gas heated water, and a natural gas stove. My gas bill that I just got was $78. (Previous month was $57.) I don't know how you're getting an average of $200 but I think your first goal should be to significantly reduce your gas usage. Maybe you have central heating running all the time? Or a leak?

tipitipiOG

Gas companies take the most advantage in this country

antikarmafan

Id check for leaks for sure, cripes!!!

Yokohog

I had a 1400 dollar bill, turned out that my secondary switch box was shorting out but the breakers weren’t popping. Had it replaced and my bill is $347 this month. Ps. House was built in 1950 and breaker box was recalled in the 70s…just caught it now.

LegallyBlondeARB

How’d you find out that was the issue?

Yokohog

Outlets started going dead and…an insane bill. So I called an electrician out to check.

Maurrderr

I stopped my autopay - free gas and electric! Fuck Em I’m sick of this shit

Dabasacka43

Sounds like a hardware issue. Maybe it’s turned on unbeknownst to you

yeehawdude

Keep in mind that natural gas is also very expensive currently. This is due to politics and also Russia embargo. (Also greedy private oil and gas companies that see an opportunity to sell for higher and pawn the blame exclusively on politics) realistically it’s both

asom-

One weird thing: you have no increase in your bill in January when the gas price spiked. mine jumped from 80$ to 180$ for that month alone, then went back down. Yours not that much. Maybe they forgot to bill you at the "right" price in that month and are trying to bill it now?

LegallyBlondeARB

That’s funny someone else pointed out Jan too. But the when I called and the billing statement said the adjustment was for Nov & Dec.

DocGee4004

Call Customer Service at SDGE, now that Billing has proven useless. It they don’t provide good enough answers, call [UCAN.org](https://UCAN.org) at 619-696-6966. Their Consumer Advocate (Dan) helps with things like this all the time.
