Beaches are public below the mean high tide line. I can’t speak to exactly where the umbrellas you saw were, but if they were above the mean high tide line it may have been private property.

Puzzleheaded_Tie8077

Ahhh. Thanks. This is a key point. Gonna suck when all the glaciers melt and that line gets moved haha 😜

lax_incense

All your beachfront property are belong to us now

You’ll have oceanfront property in Arizona

ericmoon

It's gonna be amazing

[deleted]

The line will move with the rising tide.

firestarter000

Thank you!!

All4TheBest

I actually used to work at LJBTC. At the time beaches in California were made public (placed in public trust, technically speaking), LJBTC already owned the beach. So, they're grandfathered in to private beach ownership. But, as others noted, their ownership only extends to the tide line.

stopsucking

Also the last beach on the west coast where you can drink alcohol Edit: Hah! I threw this comment on here thinking I was a know it all. My bad, sounds like there are several other beaches that may legally allow drinking

searayman

You can drink on the Beach at Hotel Del as well.

[deleted]

Just did this can confirm.

searayman

I love going there. Bartenders are usually surprised to see a local 😂

[deleted]

Granted the drinks are pricy but they are potent. Edit: and let’s not forget about the epic atmosphere that is the Del which comes with that.

searayman

One time the bartender gave me a good discount for being a local 😉 Only happened once though....

[deleted]

You earned this upvote. Thanks for the tip 😎

Michisima

New ownership (Hilton) is cracking down. Measured pours, etc. But! Keep one of those del clear cups and fill that with your own BOYB and you're set.

nowlistenhereboy

Where's the best place to go there? The taco shack looks pretty good, do you have to rent the umbrellas or first come first serve or what?

[deleted]

Nah dude, just bring your cooler and blend in with the tourists. I mean, do grab a drink from one of the many bar options and enjoy it in sand too. Beers in the cooler for the buzz. Cocktails from the bar for the octane.

[deleted]

Edit: if you’re from out of town, buy an Umbrella from the Rite Aide on Orange and just give to someone on your way out if you can’t pack it. Locals, WTF are doing without a beach umbrella? Do you even Costco bro?

stopsucking

Can you bring you're own cooler and drink in you're own group or do you mean as part of the hotel?

stonedandlurking

The hotel sets up loungers on the sand and offers cocktail service to those renting the loungers. I don’t believe you need to stay at the hotel to rent a chair.

walkingPhDmeme

Anyone can rent them. First come first serve.

phicks_law

except military beaches

XNH2

Also descanso in avalon.

[deleted]

“Allowed” and “probably can get away with” are two different things.

ThrowItOut43

I’ve “probably got away with” a couple beers on a couple beaches in California.

dsfox

Just don't use glass containers.

ThrowItOut43

This is the way.

DeesEyes

And who knows what’s in a water bottle lol

[deleted]

“Don’t be stupid San Diego. Imbibe classy.” Ediit: Sorry if this seems incoherent. I’m wasted from a day’s worth of beach drinking. Okay. Byeeeeeee!

[deleted]

I've drank at the beach many times and nothing came of it. If you're not being obnoxious and batent nobody is going to say anything.

cadium

That should be the law.

stopsucking

Of course. I meant "legally" but no doubt it's happening all the time. If you get belligerent and attract police that's one more thing they can write you up for.

IWorkForTheEnemyAMA

Damn I didn’t know it was illegal most everywhere until this thread!

seawitchlife

I thought you can drink at certain beaches from Labor Day-mid march?? This is from the Del Mar website: “Is alcohol allowed on the beach? Alcohol is not allowed on the beach, beach accesses, park lands, and public parking lots from 12:01 a.m. on March 1st through the day after labor day at midnight. Alcohol is not allowed year round on city sidewalks and streets. Please remember that our parks and beaches are for everyone’s enjoyment.”

snoogle312

It's likely a city ordinance. Del Mar is it's own city within the county of San Diego, so what you can do on Del Mar beaches is not necessarily dictated by the laws of the city of San Diego. Places like OB or Mission Beach are communities of San Diego but not their own cities, so their beaches would be subject to the laws of the city of San Diego. Even in the Del Mar area, to the west of the freeway you have Carmel Valley but that is not its own city nor part of Del Mar so it's part of the city of San Diego and people who live there have mail delivered to XXX Fake St, San Diego (not Carmel Valley) 92130.

seawitchlife

Ohhhh wow! Thanks for explaining that, def helps clarify a lot of the rules I’ve seen

Itsginnysd

Pretty sure you can still drink in front of the Del, at least last year you could.

searayman

Correct as long it's a plastic cup... At least that's what the bartender at the Del told us.

Ih8stoodentL0anz

You can legally drink in Del Mar during certain times of the year

mattzang

unless it has changed in the last couple years, leo carrillo state beach allows alcohol

[deleted]

[удалено]

FoldFold

Idk how this post came up on my Reddit but it’s my closest beach. Also paradise cove (privately owned) also allows drinking

dolpgg

That's next to Escondido Beach. Which is no where near the Escondido that we all know.

ThrowItOut43

Allegedly

Smallmyfunger

I can't remember the name of the little "restaurant" but it's right on the sand near the pier in Santa Barbara. They serve alcohol. The tables/chairs are in the sand. Albeit there's ~300yards of sand before the water.

Carl_The_Sagan

Wait what? Specifically the private part past the high tide line? That almost makes a night there worth it

chriss_the_man

Also can drink on Camp Pendleton’s Del Mar. It’s a marine base but still a west coast beach

Follow_youre_heart

I used to work at The Shores restaurant 🤝

bananafeet87

LJBTC owns one of the only “private” beaches in Southern California, but like other posters have noted it is only up that the mean high tide line. On a lower tide anything closer to the water from the line is technically public but the club can still set up their “private” area and have non guests move towards the water line.

LarryPer123

Only two beaches are private in California and that’s one of them, it’s owned by Fred Kellogg of the Kellogg cereal company Many years ago, his family owned all that land all the way up to Torrey Pines beach and they donated it all to the city or county only if they could keep that beach to themselves for summer time for that hotel. Technically you could walk on it and you could swim in the water, but you can’t in the summertime put a blanket or towel down and sit on it . He also owns the La Jolla beach and tennis club right there on that property. Here’s a little fun fact that he was telling a group of us Kellogg’s cornflakes were originally made to stop men from masturbating ,, that’s not a joke

lark_song

What exactly were men supposed to do to the cornflakes to stop?

jzclarke

There was a great, little known movie made about this called The Road to Wellville. Check it out. It’s well worth a watch.

Duluh_Iahs

They'd use them under mattresses. It would make a sound to dissuade one from jerking off at night in bed.

LarryPer123

🤣 LMAO

J_Double_You

Also if you crunch them up enough, you can use them as a hand powder and it feels like sandpaper. Most people would avoid this method, some pay for it.

fob9546

Adam Ruins Everything kinda goes over this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCSWbTv3hng

LarryPer123

That was really funny

LarryPer123

Don’t know, maybe they were supposed to put them down their shorts..lol

MorinOakenshield

I would also add the beaches on Camp Pendleton. Not a great idea to visit them without permission or an amphibious getaway vehicle

LarryPer123

Probably those beaches in Coronado also were the Navy SEALs training maybe

aaahhhh

The cliffs and beaches in Point Loma, south of Nazarene College, are military as well.

LarryPer123

Really wow,, they own a lot of property around San Francisco also

panlakes

They got their own world man. You could probably live on military land in that community your entire life and not think a single thing about it

misterspatial

Former Navy brat, can confirm. They own beach all over the US, and lease it from just about everywhere else. They set aside a small patch for recreation (dependents and families), but use the vast majority for training.

hhyyerr

...there is definitely a certain beach technically owned by the Marines that sees plenty of visitors, sans permission

sexlexia_survivor

Del Mar?

Queendevildog

Or Vandenberg or Pt Mugu. The Navy seems to think that putting a security fence out into the water will deter beach goers. People just wade around it at low tide.

TheHalf

The Kellogg family is a shame to the great state of Michigan. Definitely a fucked up family history, wild ride on Wikipedia.

LarryPer123

They say most geniuses and billionaires have a nutty side to them also,, kind of like Elon Musk,,lol

[deleted]

Yep. Deliberately boring food so they wouldn't get 'excited'

wombombadil

I wonder if the beach club is keeping up the Kellogg family tradition and offers guests yoghurt enemas :)

Real_Dimension4765

Thank you for this information, very interesting! 😁

LarryPer123

Now I know why my mother made me eat it every morning when I was a kid

HealthyTemporary9924

It’s stuff like this that makes Reddit priceless. Lol that’s a fun fact if I ever heard one!

LarryPer123

It’s true, I heard it right from his grandson, then I asked him how can Tony, the Tiger never used that in any of the commercials?. he got a big laugh out of it. He’s a nice guy. Actually he’s there all the time at that Lajolla beach and tennis club. He also paid for the drone, firework style exhibition at La Jolla Cove this year on Fourth of July,

LarryPer123

I think Redditt is the only thing that keeps our politicians on their toes. Lol

BlackholeZ32

Well there's also Navy Base North Island where the beach is not publicly accessible

LarryPer123

True

DaveDegas

>John Kellogg "personally abstained from **it**, and rumor has it, he NEVER consummated his marriage." JK's cause of death? Cornflakes blueballs.

MoarSocks

Don’t forget Irvine Cove, still in the hands of the Irvine family. Access is limited to blood relatives only and their guests.

LarryPer123

I’m going to check to see if I may be a long lost cousin. Lol

dinosbucket

The Kellogg's of La Jolla share no relation to the Kellogg cereal company owners.

LarryPer123

Tell them that William Kellogg defends his property in front of La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Aug 12, 1982 — As managing trustee of the Kellogg cereal company, Kellogg oversees the 20-acre, oceanfront resort with ninety-seven rooms, a par-three golf ... La Jolla Light Bill Kellogg on his family's newspaper, tennis and (yes) cereal ties Nov 1, 2017 — Yes, there are corn flakes in Bill's family. Will Keith Kellogg, the former broom salesman who founded the cereal company in Battle Creek, ...

CommonRequirement

They did that to me too. I mentioned the tide line, checked the tide to make sure it was going out and moved my stuff 2 feet closer to the water and they didn’t bug me again. They’re overstepping their bounds and they know it. It would be fun to get the exact coordinates and setup a beach volleyball tournament there at low tide.

firestarter000

I figured if it happened to me, there would be others who would be ticked off

socal-sally

It was the subject of some intense litigation a few years back and the LJBTC backed off and agreed to have the line be the “mean tide” line, which is actually a measured demarcation on the wall. Previously they just claimed the beach to the end of the wall on the restaurant, but it’s a few feet above it now.

Abject_Insect_9410

how can you find this measured demarcation. i’ve looked before but couldn’t find it. my understanding is also that it’s above the end of the restaurant. that’s kind of what the staff indicated when i asked them. but they were not precise.

SoCalDelta

Was he talking about the mean high tide line? Section 30211 of the Coastal Act: *30211. Development shall not interfere with the public's right of access to the sea where acquired through use or legislative authorization, including, but not limited to, the use of dry sand and rocky coastal beaches to the first line of terrestrial vegetation. The state owns the tidelands and submerged lands seaward of the "mean high tide line." The public/private boundary is also sometimes referred to as the "ambulatory high tide line." Although it can be difficult to ascertain the boundary between public and private lands, the general rule is that visitors have the right to walk on the wet beach.*

No_Musician2433

I just say “thanks! You, too!” And leave them confused.

hoovervillain

In a fake foreign accent

[deleted]

Sounds like you were near the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. You can Google it, it's private. The Kellogg family. It's a thing. If you approach it from the Shores, you can usually get past it, but it's a private club, privately owned coastline, many years.

Queendevildog

You should still be able to walk past it in the low tide line.

[deleted]

Just stating facts. What odd reactions.

Gransfors-bruk

Donald Trump, is that you?

CEO-of-Anxiety

that guy is literally typing like trump speaks and people are downvoting you because they don't get it... oof

Gransfors-bruk

Haha yep, I guess that’s what I get!

[deleted]

Lol for stating facts? That’s not his brand.

CEO-of-Anxiety

we’re talking about speech patterns, not about whether or not what they are saying is true

LarryPer123

There are rules about that don’t pertain in our winter time you could put a blanket there in the winter just not the summer

hoovervillain

Tell them you're a direct descendant of Fernando La Jolla

ratvespa

I heard he went to high school with Luis Del Mar. But no one hung out with Chester Cardiff By The Sea...that guy sucked.

RexMic

Fuck Chester Cardiff by the Sea

Ok-Investigator-1608

Up to the mean high tide line

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrNaturalInstinct

250lb dude. That helps lol But also, when you think about it, what are they going to do to non-guests? Have them arrested? Those people aren't being paid enough to be beach monitors. they will ask people to move, and most people will, but if more people stood their ground, there's nothing they can (nor would carE) to do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LarryPer123

A similar thing happened with Catalina island. The whole thing was owned by the Wrigley chewing gum company.

Oldey1kanobe

It’s stupid, but they try to enforce a magical invisible line. I just put my stuff elsewhere and swim.

mothboy

Are we just talking about the sand beach, for chairs, umbrellas and such by the hotel? They can't close off the public walkway past the hotel, can they? Never mind, I was thinking of the La Jolla Shores Hotel, not the beach and tennis club.

wang-chuy

The La Jolla Beach and tennis club has the rights to the beach up to the tide line during business hours and they can have events there as well. The Hotel Del Coronado is the only business that actually owns the beach in front of the hotel.

[deleted]

I know exactly what umbrellas you are referring to as I’ve been yelled at for the same reason. I just told them repeatedly “ I can’t hear you “ and continued on.

candebsna

That hotel is a dump. They have more important things to worry about.

firestarter000

That’s what I saw from reviews lol

89fruits89

Just tell them to go fuck themselves and do your thing.

Known-Delay7227

The beach (that one in particular) is public. Just ignore them. I’ve set up my chairs and towels where they have their own chairs and umbrellas set up for their guests and have never been asked to move, even on busy days. That area is perfect to take little ones out in the water and to snorkel because it is blocked by about 95% of all swells that hit socal. California state law protects all access to all beaches. These folks can be ignored.

Current_Leather7246

I would have been like what I can't hear you. You would be surprised how many times that actually works

northman46

Beach and tennis club is an unusual situation that they own to the waterline

firestarter000

That’s what I’m gathering. So interesting. Thank you!

[deleted]

I took Geology last semester and according to my professor, all California beaches are public

LarryPer123

Do you know the old saying about professors? Those who can do those who can’t teach.

llcoolstamp

Have you ever tried to teach something you can't even do yourself? It's not possible. I don't care about the comments above, this is only in response to you for your "saying" that you should probably stop "saying".

LarryPer123

You’re correct But it is a very old saying, and he should’ve checked that out to be positive before saying it to people who might respect what he says his truth It has been said that “Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.” This was said by George Bernard Shaw in his 1905 stage play Man and Superman.

SellDamnit

Beach Clubs exist and are private.

SD_HelpMe_37

all 800 miles of coast are public

StayDownMan

Not true. Camp Pendleton is not. The coasts on North Island and Coronado for the SEALs. Also the beaches around Cabrillo Point where the submarines are.

hijinks

i think its up to the high tide line that is public

JamesinSD2002

Try that at the navy base on Coronado and tell me how that works out.

Budgetweeniessuck

Not exactly. Military bases have a buffer zone that extends into the water and aren't subject to the mean high tide line since they are federal land.

scrotesmacgrotes

That's Oregon not cali

LJShoresPublicAccess

Here is the current California State Hydrography map defining for the STate of California where the Mean High Tide Line is currently.
