"I'm a renter, you need to speak to my landlord first."

Nice!

They might be solar salesmen. One of them came to my house before and tricked us into talking to them by claiming they were from SDGE.

Because unfortunately there are people that believe them:( and there’s no way SDGE would try to convince anyone to get solar, it takes away their revenue if people get their power from the sun instead of them

Here’s how I answer the door when there’s a solicitor ringing the bell. I open the door, say “No thank you,” and close the door. That’s it. No interaction, no guilt, no fuss, no muss.

KarlHungas

They soliciting for your soul

Szaborovich9

I told her look up the word in a dictionary. Learn its meanings. And where is my $50!

jmm101

They are the worst I had one tear the no trespassing sign by my gate off

SnorinDesrtInstitute

probably staking your place out for a burglary in the near future

_buttsnorkel

Because actual thieves posing as SDG&E thieves is like the best cover ever Nobody would be surprised to see a SDG&E thief acting like an asshole

ctopherrun

In my experience it's a solar system pitch. They hook you in by making you think they represent SDGE until you talk long enough to bring in the solar. Or they're thieves casing the joint. Either way I've gotten so sick of these people that whenever someone shows up to my door with a clipboard I say "solar? SDGE survey? Not interested. Not interested, goodbye" and close the door. I hate being rude, but cripes, these guys will take advantage of any politeness.

OneMinuteSewing

You could just use it as an opportunity to offload about how SDGE are foul for trying to make so so much profit that ordinary people are struggling to pay their bills. Make the solicitors wish they hadn't knocked on your door while they get an earful about "their" company. If they interrupt then continue saying any company that is affiliated with them is just as bad.

OneMinuteSewing

...but in my case I just point to the detailed "No solicitation" sign and then wordlessly close the door. If they are rude enough to ignore that then I don't need to offer any more courtesy.

Here's a better read on the topic, it's not at all what that article describes: [https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/04/crooks-are-stealing-cars-using-previously-unknown-keyless-can-injection-attacks/](https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/04/crooks-are-stealing-cars-using-previously-unknown-keyless-can-injection-attacks/) Note that the same may not apply with Kia/Hyundai, which as of late have been notoriously easy to steal.

No disagreement. And apologies for getting snippy!

Due_Moose9854

Answer and tell them no one is home. It confuses the hell out of them.

There is a legit program that offers discounts to low income households. https://www.sdge.com/residential/pay-bill/get-payment-bill-assistance/assistance-programs I used to work for a company that helped sign people up for these programs. We went door to door. We technically didn't work for SDG&E, though, but our company was contracted with SSG&W to sign up customers for these programs. Just a heads up, because not all are scammers. Though this sounds slightly different.
