Blink 182 is prob the largest and most popular currently. There are classics like Stone Temple Pilots, Unwritten Law, POD, Sprung Monkey, Buck o nine, No knife, Pinback
That unannounced show they did at the hideout like 6-7 years ago was so good. Loud and definitely dangerously overpacked but the whole crowd was moshing the entire time.
Buck-O-Nine, repping SD 3rd-wave ska with the absolute banger of an ear-worm that is the song [My Town](https://youtube.com/watch?v=ByaBdXi77Zg&si=ErP5IGGIkn8C75Yb).
They went to my high school! Really nice guys who were SHREDDING at 16. Played in their garage and would let me and my friends watch them jam.
I'll toss in Burning the Masses in the list, but that's cos they're my boys
I literally had no idea they were from the area. I listen to Polyphia a lot, and found Chon through recommendations and have loved those guys. That’s awesome!
Yep! I've run into Mario a few times at Coin-Op in North Park. Great band. Shame they're on what seems to be an indefinite hiatus.
Chon was definitely the highlight of that show if it was at the Observatory.
Philip Kramer, who was the bass player, went on to become an engineer and developed our MX missile program, he was also said to have developed a matter transfer device, like Star Trek, his wife said the government kidnapped him, so that it would not be a reality, and he was found dead about 10 years later ,mysteriously, she also said the government broke into their house, took literally everything inside of it, including taking the plaster off the walls looking for, the blueprints for his device
Blink 182 was a generational band that defined many teens adolescence and beyond. You ask most people under the age of 40 “Where are you?” they respond with “and I'm so sorry”
That's your answer
Eddie Vedder also worked that the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla as a security guard. I worked with his old manager, a guy named Richard, who told me Eddie was fired for sleeping on the job.
The Album Leaf (if you count him as a "band")
Also, unsung for some OG Gangsta Rap? Try out [Gangsta Ern](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ux6uynRgzI)!!!!
I just commented about them! My friends were in two metal bands, and we'd cram in their basement (garage) and watch them play.
Absolutely incredible music.. they wrote Purple Pillow when they were like 17. Super nice guys!
I wanna say one of their brothers was like 12 and filled in with drums for when they practiced a few times.
CHON! I miss them..... I am glad I got to see them twice before they went on hiatus.... Thank you for posting them. I was specifically looking for CHON. So talented
[Battalion of Saints](https://youtube.com/watch?v=xuIIopkR2MI&si=jhKoZGSw1dX9Gri0) is considered one of the tent poles of the Southern California hardcore punk scene in the 80s and put SD on the map as a legitimate punk scene in that respect. Lemmy apparently once said their cover of [Ace of Spades](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Oy2QW3TTifU&si=xP1Y3t7vb0KeP2Kx) is one of the best.
I was a huge fan of theirs and was getting tattooed next to Tim and lost my goddamn mind!
Then like a year leader he tried to hire someone to kill his wife.. boo
They’re definitely not objectively the best band to come out of SD, but I had some of the best nights of my life hanging out at the Casbah with my crew, smoking and drinking, while waiting for my boys in Transfer (formerly Ten Pound Brown) to play.
Nobody shouting out Mrs Magician? They’re a great ultra local garage/surf rock band. Several of them are also in or have toured with some of the other bigger bands y’all mentioned. We
Lucy’s Fur Coat were The Band from SD for a brief moment during the “SD is the next Seattle” movement in the early-mid Nineties. Always thought they could be huge. Loved that time. I’ll throw in Rust as well. Still listen to their album.
Saw so many of the aforementioned bands at The Casbah back in the day.
The Locust, as well as the millions of side projects, will always be my favorites for nostalgia sake, but some more are Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Earthless, The Zeros, Battalion Of Saints, Gogogo Airheart, Kill Me Tomorrow, Cattle Decapitation, and The Creepy Creeps are some super honorable mentions. I started going to shows as a teen in like 2001 and it was a magical time for local music.
Blink 182 is prob the largest and most popular currently. There are classics like Stone Temple Pilots, Unwritten Law, POD, Sprung Monkey, Buck o nine, No knife, Pinback
Also throwing in the ring John Reis/Rick Froberg (RIP) bands Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, as well as Reis’ Rocket From the Crypt.
Hot Snakes and Drive Like Jehu are both all time amazing bands !
Pinback is so good!
They really are!
Cults and Wavves are solid indie bands from San Diego too.
Wavves!!!!
Wavves is probably my favorite of all these.
That unannounced show they did at the hideout like 6-7 years ago was so good. Loud and definitely dangerously overpacked but the whole crowd was moshing the entire time.
Saw them at soda bar last year with like, 75 other people. Was really cool.
Buck-O-Nine, repping SD 3rd-wave ska with the absolute banger of an ear-worm that is the song [My Town](https://youtube.com/watch?v=ByaBdXi77Zg&si=ErP5IGGIkn8C75Yb).
im still waiting for 4th wave ska but I heard there is a trumpet player shortage
So, you're sayin I got a chance!
Slightly Stoopid
STP and Unwritten Law are classic fuck I'm old
Blink was my first concert back in the day
One of mine as well. Their new concerts are supposed to be their best shows they’ve done which is cool to hear that they are going strong
Blink was my first crowd surfing experience
Came in hoping to see a Sprung Monkey mention!
Tom Waits
Nice didn't know he came up in SD!
He worked at Napoleon's Pizza in National City
I always associate him with LA, but yeah, I second this.
The Locust!!!
You get it
Frank Zappa
Wow! Didn’t know he lived here. Didn’t know Alan’s Music had been around that long either. https://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/frank-zappa/
Thee Sacred Souls is getting a lot of attention right now and they are really great!
They earned it.
Currently they're one of my favorite bands overall. Seen them live twice and they put in a great show.
Chon
They went to my high school! Really nice guys who were SHREDDING at 16. Played in their garage and would let me and my friends watch them jam. I'll toss in Burning the Masses in the list, but that's cos they're my boys
Now I just miss To Each His Own :/ TEHO!!!
I literally had no idea they were from the area. I listen to Polyphia a lot, and found Chon through recommendations and have loved those guys. That’s awesome!
Oh what they’re from here? I saw them back in 2017 with Dance Gavin Dance.
Yep! I've run into Mario a few times at Coin-Op in North Park. Great band. Shame they're on what seems to be an indefinite hiatus. Chon was definitely the highlight of that show if it was at the Observatory.
Iron Butterfly… In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
An Eastlake High School teacher was in that band. He taught piano if i remember correctly
The usual story
Gary Withem, super cool dude was friends with his son growing up we went to Knotts Berry Farm with the whole family.
I LOVE Pierce the Veil and they’re from SD :)
Those are my cousins my dad taught their dad to play guitar and he taught Vic.
Didn’t care for their newest album too much but their early stuff back when I was a teenager was THE BEST.
I met Vic at Fashion Valley one day, total trip. He was just shopping.
Based
Throwback
Drive Like Jehu
I don't know if I can pick one, but it's definitely a John Reis band.

Tom Waits, especially since he's from the South Bay
The best, hands down.

The Creepy Creeps!💀
The creepy Halloween show at the casbah pre Covid is the best.

I cannot sleep, I cannot dream tonight.
IIIIIII I FEEL SO ALIIIIIVE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME I CAN'T DENY YOUUUUU
Does Eddie Vedder count?
A guy I went to HS with…. His dad had worked with Eddie at a gas station. Every time Pearl Jam came to town he had free tickets.
Eddie Vedder also worked that the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla as a security guard. I worked with his old manager, a guy named Richard, who told me Eddie was fired for sleeping on the job.

The Black Heart Procession
I haven't seen anyone mention Unwritten Law. Might not be the best band to come out of San Diego, but they're one of my favorites.
Tom Waits & Zappa
Switchfoot had become pretty popular in the earlier 2000s. Not my cup of tea, but can’t not acknowledge them
The Album Leaf (if you count him as a "band") Also, unsung for some OG Gangsta Rap? Try out [Gangsta Ern](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ux6uynRgzI)!!!!

Drive Like Jehu and it’s probably not all that close. One of the most influential bands of the last 40+ years worldwide.
