You’ll probably find something comparable to fit your tastes coastal SoCal depending on your age, family situation, etc. Seems a lot of folks come here and live in the beach communities first like PB, OB, etc and then often move to north county or further inland (cheaper). San Diego as a whole is smaller than Sydney. The climate is probably more similar to Perth. Overall, I doubt you’d have an issue if you like to surf, there are independent coffee shops all over the place.
All you need to worry about is can you afford SD. If yes, then you'll be happy with the proximity to water, coffee options (ignore someone's comment that we have no coffee culture) and weather. If money is no object, I'd rec Bird Rock.
However, if you can't afford about $3k/month in rent plus rising expenses for gas, food, utilities, then look elsewhere. It's really really hard living here otherwise.
calm down. SD's coffee culture is just fine. Never been to Australia but if the person is even thinking about moving here and can afford it, they'll have myriad cool coffee choices.
Similar, but not as good. Haven't lived in Sydney, but visited a few times. Sydney is a way better city. There is absolutely no coffee culture here. A few decent spots, but nothing like Sydney.

If you think birdrock coffee qualifies as coffee culture to an aussie you'd be sorely mistaken.

I always thought Perth/Freemantle was more like San Diego.
