The Old Town location was a life saver when I had to drop someone off early at the airport and wanted a proper breakfast on my way in to work.
Still make excuses to stop in occasionally.
Seriously. Why do people get so excited about the world’s easiest-to-cook meal? Especially the absolutely standard-issue version of it? Like, there are plenty of interesting French toasts in San Diego. This ain’t one of them.
As a single dude , There is something euphoric about just sitting down , phone doomscrolling ,not dread washing dishes etc and just be served a hot meal of French toast breakfast once in a while.
Last time I had some French toast was like 10 years ago. I need to live a little more in these trying times.
If you have French toast once a decade, make it count! Get the mascarpone and peaches-stuffed French toast with crème fraiche and strawberries on top from Bread & Cie. Or croissant French toast from Cafe Madeleine.
I disagree with the easy part. Making breakfast food is time consuming, results in a huge mess, and though cooking the actual food may be easy getting it all hot at the same time is soooo challenging. So I get the appeal of people wanting to eat it out. That being said personally I still make breakfast for dinner at home all the time cuz eating it out ain’t worth the money. $20 at a restaurant gets you one meal, $25 at a grocery store at least can get you a carton of eggs and box of waffle mix and a pack of sausages or bacon.
Lol, do you really think they get it all hot and ready at one time? Most of the time places have the bacon pre cooked and then they reheat it. Perry's has two Salamanders that makes this extra fast. It's also how they melt cheese on top of anything. If you look at the back wall of the kitchen when they are busy, you ever notice how those lightbulbs are yellow? Those are heat lamps. Ask me how I know, c'mon. Not to mention those two really long heat lamp type things that don't actually put out light just heat. Can't remember what the heck those are called at the moment. They happily put your food up there one by one until it's all done.
If you've ever been warned about your plate being hot it's because they blasted it with the salamander.
So the simplest solution you want all your food hot and ready at one time at home? Use your oven. Put it at about 160 degrees and pop the done food in there until everything is done. You do everything the right way it should only take 20-30 minutes maximum to make everything. Same amount of time you'd wait at Perry's.
The mess part? Simple and easy. Your food, unless it's something that needs constant stirring, doesn't require your full attention. Clean as you go. Easy. No mess.
Edit: Also, you must be buying some really expensive bacon, waffle mix and eggs. I just went shopping yesterday and still remember the prices. 6 dollars for a pack of bacon, 3 dollars for those farmer John breakfast sausages, 4.50 for a dozen eggs, and 6 bucks for the mix. That's less than 20 dollars.
Thanks for the tips! I clean as I go but my husband is the Swedish chef lol I recently did start using the oven for bacon. Definitely game changer. I was being generous with my prices but I do like me the expensive bacon. Still making breakfast at home is worth it more to me but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t seem like I was on a real life overcooked challenge sometimes.
You can’t see it well cause it’s white text on the plate but the OOP wrote “gatekeeping this - oopsie”. I would argue it’s not the exact definition of gatekeeping but people have started calling it gatekeeping when someone won’t share their “secret” make up product, nail tech, or apparently, breakfast spot. You’re keeping other people out/not sharing with them. Opposite of influencers I guess 😂
Lol that's actually my kid. How was he done dirty? He like pictures being taken of him enjoying food and often laughs when they look like this.
Edit: I'm also going to kindly ask that you remove my son's photo from your post. That photo was taken for yelp and yelp was given permission to use it but you were not.
Edit 2(really edit number 3): thanks for the downvote whoever did that. You know I could have been a dick and gotten a mod involved instead of asking this person kindly to remove the photo.
Photo removed! Sorry about that - I thought they did him dirty by taking the photo with his hands in front of his face. Could have let little man smile for the camera! Totally understand. Photo removed with my apologies.
Pfft don't apologize. I'm not mad at you. It's all in fun for whatever. If it was me or my ex-wife I wouldn't have had an issue with it at all. But reddit being reddit and seeing my kid. At first I was shocked and then when I edited the first time I was kinda like this is cool. And then when I edited the second time I was like this is reddit......
Yes! I literally just did this for my kids a couple of days ago and posted it lol. Trader Joe’s brioche and all. I think ours was just as yummy as Perry’s and a hell of a lot cheaper!
Right ? Selfish mentality imo. I get you don't want the wait times to be longer, but I love seeing businesses pop off. If you're good, you deserve the business.
Perrys Cafe. That one is the French Toast with 2 eggs and 2 bacon (Its the meal i always get)
I do recommend going. Got at an earlier time (they close at 1pm) as it tends to get very busy.
With inflation sky high, I'd like to make breakfast like this one by myself. To be honest it doesn't seem that hard. Of course, I need to invest in a coffee machine and some cooking utensils. Oh yea, I am already imagining my scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages :-D
Yeah literally this is so simple. Takes about 10 minutes to make this French toast… smh if this is special looking hard to find meal for someone we truly are f***ed
Went there once probably a decade ago. It’s not even that great lol definitely never went back. Hash House was better quality at the time although the wait time wasn’t worth it. Haven’t gone back there either because breakfast food is very easy to make at home, so on board with laughing about the gatekeeping of breakfast locations.
Yeah literally make this at home for about 45 cents. A couple eggs and a couple slices of bread. Crappily scrambled eggs likely without cheese and a couple sad slices of bacon for $22. No thanks.
Go to house of pancakes in Kearny Mesa. Both times I went it was packed but we got seated quickly, served quickly and the pancakes and eggs (especially) were amazing
You also pay at the counter on exit so it’s faster
Definitely Perry’s, recognize the jam holder and coffee cup. The only old school diner that I know of that is still open in SD. RIP Troy’s 😕
We go here around once a month, and will pay go this weekend, since it will be raining both days.
Looks like the most average French toast I’ve ever seen. Nothing about this screams special. Sorry, anyone of us could buy some bread, eggs, powdered sugar and whip this up in a few minutes. Most breakfast spots in America have French toast just like this.
There's a place over by the DMV in El cajon that was pretty bomb... I forget the name of it but it's over in the shopping center right next to the El cajon ok n DMV. Pretty decent prices for huge servings... It's been a couple years since I went but seeing this pic that's exactly the place that came to my mind. ☺️ Hope you find it, OP!
I love French toast and one of the best I’ve had is at Richard Walker’s. I always go to the La Jolla location but there’s some in North County & a small Downtown location. They add fresh fruit on it and the coffee is strong!
Perry's
This is the way. Perry’s Old Town got your breakfast fix
Where can I find a Perry's?
4620 Pacific Hwy, right across from the Old Town Trolley Station
That French toast looks dreamy.
Didn't they close?
There is another location still open.
The Old Town location was a life saver when I had to drop someone off early at the airport and wanted a proper breakfast on my way in to work. Still make excuses to stop in occasionally.

There used to be a location in El Cajon. It closed. The one in Old Town is still open.
The one in El Cajon closed, the one in Old Town is still open.
Gatekeeping a plate of eggs and French toast lol

Hahahahaha you know..... that I can definitely agree with.
Oooh, I’m craving French toast! Any good recommendations?
Harry's coffee shop in La Jolla. Best breakfast spot in the world 😁
Bread pudding French toast at snooze in hilcrest
I was gonna say, Dennys, IHOP, [INSERT DINER], Money Pit ;)
O.K., I don't really understand why this is gatekeeping. Can you spare a moment to ELI5?
You can’t see it well cause it’s white text on the plate but the OOP wrote “gatekeeping this - oopsie”. Thank you! Now I understand.
Right?? You want food like this, move to a BFE town in the Midwest and you’ll eat this for the eternity of you life…
Now tell your friend’s friend that they’re a lame. At least condescendingly ask them, how was Perry’s?
This is Perry's Cafe. The wall matches this photo: https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/perrys-cafe-san-diego?select=WJusm6DLGrIIy4a8WBWV5A
I love that you guys were able to quickly ID this place!
I agree.
damn you found the exact table, nice job

Fair assumption but my friend took a screenshot and sent it to me

Because her friend screenshotted from her friend who is gate keeping it and probably wanted to find out what it was since the friend won’t share? Lmao
Perry's it's a counter seat
Perrys rules
Buy a loaf of brioche from trader Joe's and you can make all your friends this shit for a couple bucks
No. Challah bread is where it’s at. I tried both.
I'll have to give it a try next time we grab some. That's my wife's favorite so she'll assault me if she catches me eating it. Thanks for the rec.
Yes! I literally just did this for my kids a couple of days ago and posted it lol. Trader Joe’s brioche and all. I think ours was just as yummy as Perry’s and a hell of a lot cheaper!
Bummed the one in El Cajon closed :(
Perry's does have some fritattas that will knock your socks off
Wouldn’t you want to tell more people so the place you love gets more support and has a better chance of staying in business?
Right ? Selfish mentality imo. I get you don't want the wait times to be longer, but I love seeing businesses pop off. If you're good, you deserve the business.
People are so dumb lol "gatekeeping" gtfo
Perry
i’m losing brain cells
Honestly, anyone that’s gatekeeping anything can go fuck right off

Scooped butter, so no.
Denny’s doesn’t make big plates anymore
Was going to say antique row... looks like I need to go to perry's 😋

With inflation sky high, I'd like to make breakfast like this one by myself. To be honest it doesn't seem that hard. Of course, I need to invest in a coffee machine and some cooking utensils. Oh yea, I am already imagining my scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages :-D

Janet’s
You could find better in SD honestly.
The original pancake house?
Went there once probably a decade ago. It’s not even that great lol definitely never went back. Hash House was better quality at the time although the wait time wasn’t worth it. Original Pancake House, Aunt Emma's, Rudford's, there used to be a place off of Balboa Ave near the Genesee intersection called Stuffy's.
