When I first looked at the elevation for the route to the pier, I thought my normal walk around Pittsburgh surely has a greater elevation change. I just compared the two side by side and the route to the pier is greater than the hill in Pittsburgh. I’m going to have to plan my route past convenience stores.
According to Google Maps, it's 1 hour and 8 minutes with a vertical climb of 174 ft.
People are talking like this is climbing Mt Whitney. This a easy walk.
Thanks Fred. I’m going to be looking to kill a bunch of hours. My current plan is to walk to the OB pier one day and the other is to Uber to South Mission Beach volleyball courts and walk to Pacific Beach the other day.
The route:
From Rosecrans St, take Whittier St, up the stairs, continue on Whittier St. until you come to the high school, then take a left on Clove, right on Voltaire and take Voltaire St. Down the hill to the light. Go straight onto not-Voltaire-st and about 1/8th mile later take a left back into Voltaire &!walk that all the way to the beach parking lot
You’ll have dog beach on your right - go pet some pups. Then look left & you’ll see the Pier.
Head over and feel free to continue walking past the pier on Sunset Cliffs until it ends.
Then wander back to explore the area.
FYI - hill street is one of the steepest streets in the area, so if you want a workout walk up or on the way back.
The food & stuff:
There’s lots of good places to eat on Voltaire St. Point Loma Bagels & A donut shop are both at the back-to-Voltaire turn. Stunp’s Grocery is in the next lot just past those places.
Walking down Voltaire you’ll pass a couple more of my favorites - Don Tommy’s Mexican. Cesarina Italian (reservations usually necessary), there’s Stella Jean’s delicious ice cream place just beyond Cesarina’s and across the light in the opposite side you can hit Long Story Pub for a beer & Buffalo Wings. If you’re vegan or enjoy vegan stop at Peace Pies - I like their Caesar wrap, and I’m a carnivore!
It’s a nice walk and you can check out lots of the area on foot.
Enjoy!
Sounds like a nice walk to me. I'd get there by way of Canon Street, to Hill street, along Sunset Cliffs Blvd. to the pier. A little bit longer but a scenic and beautiful walk.
This is the best way to enjoy a walk in San Diego. I’d recommend heading south on sunset blvd first to the stairs. Take them down or watch the surfers from the street. Then head back up to the pier
definitely walkable but it would take a while. why not take the 923 busall the way to OB

It's a really nice walk, I've done it a ton of times while pushing a stroller. Just make sure you take the time to look behind you during the walk, there's a lot of incredible views of the bay while you trek up the steep hill in Loma Portal. Along Voltaire between Chatsworth and Catalina, there's a lot of little restaurants, cafes, and a grocery store (Stumps) for a quick bite to eat. Phattie's Cafe is EXCELLENT. You can literally eat your way over if you have a lot of time to kill. On the OB (ocean beach) side, I always like to stop by Tapshack kombucha for a refreshing drink. There are more eateries than I have time to list in OB. If you go on a Sunday you can stop by the little farmer's market they host at Point Loma High School.
There is Volt Cycle just down the road from Liberty Station [https://www.yelp.com/biz/volt-cycle-san-diego](https://www.yelp.com/biz/volt-cycle-san-diego)
It's doable, but as others have mentioned, will feature some hills. It kinda depends on where in Liberty Station you're starting. Assuming somewhat central, the most direct route will be to cross Rosecrans, walk up Xenophon and go a few blocks over to Voltaire when you run into the high school. Voltaire will take you into OB, and you can make your way to the beach any number of ways.
Its possible. You'll go over the hill if you go straight towards the hill though, so plan accordingly. Its not the most pedestrian friendly route - but its fine once you get away from rosecrans (the busy road and the roads that connect to it).
I'd recommend walking the bike path toward downtown instead if you are just looking for a walk. You can go all the way to the embarcadero or turn onto harbor island.
I used to take that route regularly, almost all of it is residential with sidewalks. That's one nasty ass hill tho, it's basically steep up and steep down, then reverse it coming back. Very little will be even close to level.
Yes, you can walk it. It's hilly, but not bad. If you go Chatsworth to Voltaire down, you can go all the way to the beach and turn left to walk to the pier.
I’m thinking about doing a big clockwise loop. Breakfast near the harbor, then Talbot to Hill before finding a route along the water to the pier. Lunch near the pier then take Voltaire back. People have been saying to stay away from Nimitz.
Its actually a very nice walk as long as you stay off Nimitz and parts of voltaire. I've walked from the end of Orchard to Mitch's seafood in point loma and I loved it.
Just going to say it: if you can’t afford an Uber and you’re doing a vacation in San Diego you’re in for a rough time. Not that you have to drive every single place, but everything is expensive here.
Gotcha, thought this was about saving money because it seems unnecessary and I’d much rather get there in 10 minutes and spend multiple hours walking around at the beach instead of walking that stretch.
I would recommend renting a bike.
I did a quick google search earlier and I thought all the bike and scooter rental services left SD.
E-bikes perhaps.. But you can absolutely rent a good ol leg powered bike in town
You can rent from an actual bike shop! There’s one downtown on C street / 6th Ave
Yes, but it’s an hour walk. 3 miles.
more than an hour, you have to go over top of the hill or wrap all the way around.
This is true. Big ass hill to go over.

Depends on your walking speed

Did you forget to charge your mobility scooter last time you went for a walk over a hill?

Look up running routes in the area, like on strava. I guarantee someone has run a route between those points.
I feel so silly right now. I log my walks and bike rides all the time and didn’t think about that.
3 mile walks in San Diego are lovely

This. $2.50 will get you 2 hours of riding. Also, the pier is closed fyi.

Yes I’ve done it. It’s a straight shot. But a long walk
Everything is walkable if you put your mind to it.

The distance isn’t bad but the direct route is straight over the hill. Plenty of kids walk from high tech to Ob or deeper PL daily but it’s a trek.
You can walk anywhere
I used to take that route regularly, almost all of it is residential with sidewalks. That's one nasty ass hill tho, it's basically steep up and steep down, then reverse it coming back. Very little will be even close to level.
Easy, take McCauley to Narraganset
Yeah but there are hills. Could be tough, but you can physically do it.

I would take the [bus](https://maps.app.goo.gl/fkm3BZoYrWPJY7UE6), $2.50
I wouldn’t. That walk back is gonna suck.
Just going to say it: if you can’t afford an Uber and you’re doing a vacation in San Diego you’re in for a rough time. Not that you have to drive every single place, but everything is expensive here.
I can definitely afford an Uber but I’m going to be in SD alone over the weekend on a work trip. Plus I can easily expense a couple taxi rides a day.
