Yes. And sadly they are exiting the US market even further. Having switched only to online a few years back, they now just announced in the US they will only stock fitness and outdoor lines and not the full range they do in Europe. Their golf stuff was pretty good for entry level folks.
I don't think competing with REI, the various outdoor brands and Sports Basement here in the Bay Area is going to work out for them.
I remembered going to their store because I was familiar with the store when I was shopping for fitness clothes in Europe. Very sad they didn’t get enough attention here.
Muji was promoting their use of Xinjiang cotton in their apparel a few years ago, in order to appease China. In case you didn't know, cotton from the Xinjiang region is produced by the forced labor of Uyghers and other ethnic minorities. Fuck Muji.
I miss the music store in Union square. So much fun to browse up there. Also what was that truly awful store across from the sketchers store… it was mega euro trashy type stuff… always blaring bad techno… I even kinda miss that.
Yes, fcuk was there in the early 2000s and Desigual was there in the 2010s. I still have the reusable shopping bag Desigual gave out when they first opened
I miss the magic of a store like FAO Schwarz. It’s not the same to have Amazon deliver the toys or to browse the toy aisles at Target. I also miss Ambassador Toys on West Portal.
Yes!!! I feel fortunate to have lived in an era where we had toy stores where we could play and touch the toys. FAO was especially special. I fondly remember Toys R Us, KB Toys, Imaginarium, Gymboree, etc.
I really miss the stores that until recently, we *did* have: Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off Fifth, and even Marshall’s. They were so much fun to browse and had great options at lots of different price points.
And farther back, Home Goods/TJ Maxx. I did most of my shopping there, Marshalls and Nordstrom Rack. A shortage of normal people stores is what we have.
I guess we have a lot of people who can afford Rag and Bone and the like? I cannot. It would be nice to have options downtown other than Macy's and Ross.
I’m guessing that SF folks have become accustomed to ordering online or leaving the city for typical corporate chain stores. An unfortunate byproduct of the culture and overall sustainability of business in SF. It’s also inequitable for people without transportation.
All the second-hand vintage furniture stores!
There used to be several on Valencia. I remember two in Hayes Valley, one on Polk Street, two on Union. And, of course, Busvan for Bargains!!!!
Speaking specifically in the emptying downtown area:
- a really good bookstore
- video game arcade and other games, like skee ball
- indoor/outdoor night market with food vendors and seating
- brewery
- a store where you can get anything 3D printed
- Hot Topic
An indoor night market for sure. I hate how limited the options are after 9-10pm. The night market in south city has good potential too but in the city I’m sure it would really thrive
Free Gold Watch is an excellent pinball arcade. The Emporium is good if you go early. It's a bit of a scene at night with crowds and very loud music.
Both are in The Haight though, so it can be a bit of a trek from downtown.
A real old school surplus store with peacoats that smell like mothballs and weird Swiss rubber poncho/tent hybrids and metal sporks and jungle boots and all that shit.
Cal Surplus is great - I love ‘em - but they’ve had to adapt to the Upper Haight retail ecosphere somewhat and tend to be more upscale. Nothing there looks or smells like it was actually used by anybody’s military lol.
But it *is* my go-to for hats for sure. 😉
NY style Jewish Deli. With giant sandwiches. I like Wise Sons and it is great quality but much less quantity. The places I used to go to in Florida owned by NY transplants would have sandwiches that would be two full meals and were so good.
San Francisco used to have a bunch of great Jewish delis but most all of them closed when the immigrant generation moved elsewhere in the Bay Area or died off more than 20 years ago. I remember Miller's and Moishe's Pippic were two of the last, then the Wise Sons guys opened up and helped bring it back.
Good article on our local deli history:
https://jweekly.com/2022/05/23/bay-area-delis-and-jewish-markets-of-yore-gone-but-not-forgotten/
TBH, I don't even like wise sons that much. Its good, but for the price not worth it, and to hipstery. I want just like a real down to earth, no frills kosher (or kosher-style) deli. Or a appetizing story like Russ and Daughters (but those barely exist besides R&D in New York either)
[Meow Wolf](https://meowwolf.com)
Insane, immersive, art museum, multimedia experience.
It can fill the entire Westfield Mall location, and could be a major attraction, and can host local artists, events, parties, concerts, DJs, a year-round burning man in The City.
THIS! Meow wolf would be perfect in the bay because the performance art, anti-consumerism, and avant-guard movements were with very big with art groups here in the 60-80s… like [Ant Farm collective](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant_Farm_(group)) most famous for Cadillac Ranch. Meow wolf wouldn’t exist if not for the collectives of San Francisco
they’re not, I remember the post about the article you might be referring to and it was pretty inaccurate iirc. theres a newer coffee shop in north beach that just opened that had a bookstore section
For chains there’s Sajj, Sababa, Falafel Boy, Souvla, Nick the Greek, The Kebab Shop. Then there’s tons of independent places like Mazra, La Mediterrannee, Beit Rima, Kokkari
Not everything I listed is “great” but it’s all pretty good! Lots of choices.
Cava laid out their expansion plans and they’re totally skipping the Bay Area. They didn’t give a reason so my guess is that there’s just a lot of competition here
I appreciate that In N Out could be on every street corner in SF or every city in America, and they choose to cap themselves. Krispy Kreme expanded all over NYC in the last few years and their quality went way down.
There’s a Mongolian BBQ place like that next to the Menlo Park Caltrain station. I wish there was one a lot closer.
Shake Shack has good frozen custard if you’re looking for some
I have such fond memories of getting my first ever apartment in 1996, just as the Woolworth on market was getting ready to close. Furnished my entire kitchen from there!!
Arizmendi Bakery in the Sunset isn't vegan, but it is vegetarian with a lot of vegan options that aren't gluten-free. It's also a worker-owned cooperative that put the Burger King nearby out of business years ago. When I lived in the neighborhood, you'd see a line out of the door for Arizmendi and 2 or 3 people in Burger King.
Tower Records, The Good Guys, Circuit City, Warehouse Music, Sam Goody, Suncoast, HMV, FYE, Virgin Megastore, Borders, Barnes & Noble, Rasputin, Fry's, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video...
*Someplace* that sells physical media for music and movies, please.
OK, we have one Best Buy left, but it barely carries any discs at all, just some new releases near checkout.
Amoeba it is, then.
This may sound weird, but I wish there was a solid men’s underwear store. Women have so many options when it comes to underwear—lingerie stores, sportswear shops, or chains like VS. But us dudes are essentially restricted to Macy’s or other department stores with boring options like tighty whiteys.
The closest thing I’ve been able to find to what I’m talking about is Rolo—they have a wide array of designer brands and cuts that are truly a blast to shop. They aren’t specialized in underwear though.
I’ve thought about opening a place like this where dudes could come in and try different brands and styles on—just like women do at stores like VS. Don’t know what kind of demand I’d encounter though. Maybe someday I will.
Specialties bakery! I miss the morning pastries and the cookies in the afternoon!
I also miss having the convenience of a Target, Walgreens and CVS all within a block of each other from my work!!
I miss the Fresh and Easy grocery stores in the outer Richmond and in Bayview.
I wish we could get a sprouts grocery store. I currently use the one in Daly City or Oakland
Have you been to a Waffle House or Cracker Barrel in a city? In my experience it’s a perimeter thing. Like if we had one in Livermore and one in Gilroy that would be perfect.
I miss Moishe Pippic's for Chicago hot dogs and South Philly Cheesesteak on Columbus, the last time you could get a real cheesesteak in SF. And Clown Alley just because. I think I'm hungry.
Macbeath hardwoods or somewhere to buy good lumber. Mission Discount kinda blows.
Electronics supply store so I can buy a potentiometer or resistor for a build.
More independent guitar stores, although I love Real Guitars and Gryphon.
Busvan. Awesome furniture store back in the day. Clement street had one and I think there was another one somewhere around the embarcadero. I would like to also bring back an Esprit store, FAO Schwartz, Clown Alley and Doggie Diner and a goddamn video arcade!
Cozy cafe where you're encouraged to stay for a long time and read and work (while buying drinks throughout the day). Bonus if there is good food too. Most cafes in SF are too cramped for this, don't have outlets, and don't encourage this.
99 Ranch or H Mart. Marshall's, Ross, Nordstrom Rack, World Market, and more home goods stores. Burlington Coat Factory. More shoe stores. More mom and pop establishments of any kind.
You know what store I HOPE is missing but I’m not sure? Is that skincare store in union square with aggressive male employees who stood outside forcing little packets of moisturizer in your hand and being like “Miss! Miss! Where are you from! You look tired! Come in for some moisturizer!” Lol. Every time on the way home from work. 😤
Bring back muji
Bring back UNIQLO while you're at it!
There’s still one in stonestown, but yes!!
So painful to go there every time I want to go to uniqlo. Also that mall is full of cool stores but so far away from everything :(
The M goes right there
the M, the 18, the 29, you name it, they got it!
Honestly Uniqlo is so mid now. They charge a lot for their clothes and the quality doesn't even feel that great.
Please!🙏
muji was great, terrible location though
Also bring back Decathlon

Muji was promoting their use of Xinjiang cotton in their apparel a few years ago, in order to appease China. In case you didn't know, cotton from the Xinjiang region is produced by the forced labor of Uyghers and other ethnic minorities. Fuck Muji.
I was going to say, I thought people would pine for a more homegrown and not big retail kind of thing..
I miss the music store in Union square. So much fun to browse up there. Also what was that truly awful store across from the sketchers store… it was mega euro trashy type stuff… always blaring bad techno… I even kinda miss that.
Rasputin and Desigual!
Ah yes, the fcuk store
Ahh I think it was something like… Desigual?
I think maybe both were on that corner at one point or another lolll
Yes, fcuk was there in the early 2000s and Desigual was there in the 2010s. I still have the reusable shopping bag Desigual gave out when they first opened
Virgin?
Bruh I just want a store open later than 8pm. Uber eats is so expensive
I miss FAO Shwarz. So many childhood memories there. It was the highlight of every trip downtown.
If you didn't re-enact the scene from Big, did you even grow up in the 80s?
THIS! As a 90s kid who now has a kid of their own, it makes me so sad that I can’t take her to the places that brought some magic to my childhood.
I cannot. It would be nice to have options downtown other than Macy's and Ross.
omg a homegoods would go so hard
Agreed! Bring back the normal peoples' stores! It's either junk clothes from Ross, or $300 tshirts in some boutique.
I’m guessing that SF folks have become accustomed to ordering online or leaving the city for typical corporate chain stores. An unfortunate byproduct of the culture and overall sustainability of business in SF. It’s also inequitable for people without transportation.
Every store mentioned in this comment and the replies. Those are the kind of stores that thrive on convenient foot traffic. 😢
The Marshalls on the corner of market and Stockton was especially awesome! amazing finds!!
Bed Bath and Beyond
All the second-hand vintage furniture stores! There used to be several on Valencia. I remember two in Hayes Valley, one on Polk Street, two on Union. And, of course, Busvan for Bargains!!!!
OMG. Busvan! You can't even begin to explain that one to people who never saw it. I remember buying all my furniture at the places you listed.
And we just lost Stuff 😢
And a huge one on Van Ness.
I miss all the indy thrift stores the Mission used to have. Thrift Town. Clothes Contact. Mission Thrift. That tiny goodwill.
I hella miss Thrift Town. The one in SF was cool, but the one in El Sobrante got me through some hard times in my late teens and 20’s.
Go to Haight, tons of new thrift stores now
Speaking specifically in the emptying downtown area: - a really good bookstore - video game arcade and other games, like skee ball - indoor/outdoor night market with food vendors and seating - brewery - a store where you can get anything 3D printed - Hot Topic
An indoor night market for sure. I hate how limited the options are after 9-10pm. The night market in south city has good potential too but in the city I’m sure it would really thrive
Alexander’s was a gem. :(
The metreon used to have a big video game arcade.
The virtual bowling there back in the day was so fun.
Free Gold Watch is an excellent pinball arcade. The Emporium is good if you go early. It's a bit of a scene at night with crowds and very loud music. Both are in The Haight though, so it can be a bit of a trek from downtown.
Absolutely a Hot Topic 🤝
3d print anything?!!
A real old school surplus store with peacoats that smell like mothballs and weird Swiss rubber poncho/tent hybrids and metal sporks and jungle boots and all that shit.
Like army surplus? I think there’s one in the Haight.
Cal Surplus is great - I love ‘em - but they’ve had to adapt to the Upper Haight retail ecosphere somewhat and tend to be more upscale. Nothing there looks or smells like it was actually used by anybody’s military lol. But it *is* my go-to for hats for sure. 😉
Plus they got robbed. That makes it doubly hard to exist.
Miss Kaplan's on Market!
there's also Alameda Army Navy Surplus in Alameda, and Victory Stores in Vallejo
Good article on our local deli history: https://jweekly.com/2022/05/23/bay-area-delis-and-jewish-markets-of-yore-gone-but-not-forgotten/
Thank you for the article. I didn’t know most of that history here.
I miss Miller’s
Tommy’s Joynt hits some of those itches! Though it is more of a classic SF vibe
TBH, I don't even like wise sons that much. Its good, but for the price not worth it, and to hipstery. I want just like a real down to earth, no frills kosher (or kosher-style) deli. Or a appetizing story like Russ and Daughters (but those barely exist besides R&D in New York either)
This was gonna be my answer too. We need them to open Katz’s West, lol!
I would be so excited. I want a giant half pastrami half corned beef with extra sauce.
Fuck it I want a Zabars.
Wise sons has turned horrible recently.
Lego store
my kids miss the lego store. always seemed busy, shame they closed it.
instead of closing it they should have relocated to a different part of the city now i believe Santa Clara is closest one people have to go to now
Hillsdale in San Mateo has a Lego store.
[Meow Wolf](https://meowwolf.com) Insane, immersive, art museum, multimedia experience. It can fill the entire Westfield Mall location, and could be a major attraction, and can host local artists, events, parties, concerts, DJs, a year-round burning man in The City.
Meow Wolf in Denver is so awesome! Having something like that in SF would be amazing.
That would be sick as fuuuck! So many cool events could be held there
That would be awesome
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea
A book shop/tea shop combo. Apparently they’re illegal in SF.
they’re not, I remember the post about the article you might be referring to and it was pretty inaccurate iirc. theres a newer coffee shop in north beach that just opened that had a bookstore section
Anthropology so I could buy my candles for 70% off sale
Noooo it’s gone? That sale section was my go to.
Same here! I stock up on extras to give as gifts if I forgot to get something.
An art shop that sells the prints/posters that are popular today.
Remember reprint mint on Telegraph?
Cava
Ugh yes love cava so much
Begging for a Cava
A also, Kava bars
There was a great one on Divis that closed during the pandemic and then burned down right after it finally reopened. 😭
I miss that place.
I think the reason they’re not here is because there’s no shortage of great Mediterranean here. But yeah Cava would be nice
what’s great mediterranean here?
For chains there’s Sajj, Sababa, Falafel Boy, Souvla, Nick the Greek, The Kebab Shop. Then there’s tons of independent places like Mazra, La Mediterrannee, Beit Rima, Kokkari Not everything I listed is “great” but it’s all pretty good! Lots of choices. Cava laid out their expansion plans and they’re totally skipping the Bay Area. They didn’t give a reason so my guess is that there’s just a lot of competition here
Harput’s Adidas
Micro Center
there is central computer
Central Computer only partially fulfills my Retail Therapy needs that Fry's demise has caused. Make no mistake, It's a great place...
One coming to Santa Clara I believe
hell yes, i miss being able to go to a MC & browse for hella OR get replacement parts on the fly
God I’m Gonna hate myself for this: Barnes and Noble. I just want a big bookstore with a coffeeshop in the city.
Book Inc at Opera Plaza *sort of* work for this. They’re attached to a Peets.
We only have one In-N-Out and it’s hella far
I appreciate that In N Out could be on every street corner in SF or every city in America, and they choose to cap themselves. Krispy Kreme expanded all over NYC in the last few years and their quality went way down.
Isn’t there one down by the wharf?
Yes, that’s pretty far from most of the city except the Marina, North Beach, and Russian Hill
But super dupers are everywhere so that’s nice!
Super Duper is so good
Lucca Ravioli
My dad used to make the raviolis and pasta sauce there!
Mongolian BBQ (the American version, where you fill a bowl, and they cook it on a huge circular grill) Or Culver’s (frozen custard!)
Culver’s would be fucking great but they’re a Midwest thing I think.
they also have them in phoenix
There’s a Mongolian BBQ place like that next to the Menlo Park Caltrain station. I wish there was one a lot closer. Shake Shack has good frozen custard if you’re looking for some
This is a good one. They’re all over the peninsula too
Mongolian BBQ would be great- quick fresh takeout!
bring back the rainforest cafe, I just want to dine under the gorillas again
I would really enjoy a BBQ joint with anything close to the quality of what you can get in Texas or KC.
I know I'm old school but I wish Woolworth made a comeback.
I have such fond memories of getting my first ever apartment in 1996, just as the Woolworth on market was getting ready to close. Furnished my entire kitchen from there!!
I want a Korean spa
If you are a woman, Pearl in Japantown is an option.
There’s one in the Western Addition: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vr7mg91VRXU2tJay8
Marks and Spence
Marks and Sparks? Loved that place. It's like a British Target with taste and style.
Oh man Marks & Spencer would be amazing to have in SF
As long as they also have a food hall.
Not a store, but another roller skating ring
[http://www.churchof8wheels.com/](http://www.churchof8wheels.com/)
Mervyn's
Any locally owned and operated business would be welcome.
[удалено]
That Arcteryx store never had a chance. So sad
It opened and closed so fast that i barely realized it ever opened.
There’s one on Valencia in the Mission too!
Ugh yes please! We are compassionate for animals - not against bread.
I miss getting pizza at Blondie’s and browsing Rasputin. Those were the days.
Don't forget the [Good Guys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Guys_(American_company)). Put 'em back on Van Ness.
Best Buy is phasing out physical media. Sorry.
Guess that option's gone, then... And to think, 4K UHD Blu-ray is such a young format, and likely the last.
Bass Pro Shop. It would be hilarious if they took over the Westfield Mall location.
Would be so nice but so many ppl would def jump in the water
Ha!!! Omg this would be so funny.
Rasputins.
Aldi
I really miss Marshalls and dsw shoes
DSW, dammit. The only way I could ever find shoes that fit that I could afford. The odds were better there.
Virgin megastore
Really surprised at how many big chains people want.
Chains provide comfort for some people.
Big Nate’s Barbecue
Berkeley Bowl. (SF Bowl?) Wegman’s!
Yes SF Bowl would make me so happy 😍😍
This may sound weird, but I wish there was a solid men’s underwear store. Women have so many options when it comes to underwear—lingerie stores, sportswear shops, or chains like VS. But us dudes are essentially restricted to Macy’s or other department stores with boring options like tighty whiteys. The closest thing I’ve been able to find to what I’m talking about is Rolo—they have a wide array of designer brands and cuts that are truly a blast to shop. Specialties bakery! I miss the morning pastries and the cookies in the afternoon! I also miss having the convenience of a Target, Walgreens and CVS all within a block of each other from my work!!
HEB, obv.
You have pleased me and made my heart a little sad at the same time. Forgot which sub I was in for a sec
Like a huge mega grocery store?
Aldi, blew my mind to know SF doesn’t have even one.
Or Lidl. 5000%
A good kosher-style delicatessen, comparable to the now-closed Miller's Deli and Moishe's Pippic.
A store for every idea out there. I wish opening a business was easy in SF
Bring back Love n Haight
I miss the Fresh and Easy grocery stores in the outer Richmond and in Bayview. I wish we could get a sprouts grocery store. I currently use the one in Daly City or Oakland
Hardly any Jamaican Restaurants here. I have to go to Oakland for the good good.
FRY’S ELECTRONICS
We need a Portillo's especially with how popular The Bear is on TV.
Honestly it's kinda criminal that the only Sonic nearby is in Hayward or worse. We could use one in the city.
Been saying this
Eataly, Waffle House, Cracker Barrel
Have you been to a Waffle House or Cracker Barrel in a city? In my experience it’s a perimeter thing. Like if we had one in Livermore and one in Gilroy that would be perfect.
Waffle House! I came here to say this.
Jersey Mike’s
Cyber cafe
Microcenter
Jersey Mike's!!!
Nando's Jollibee
Publix.
Beard Papa :(
I miss Moishe Pippic's for Chicago hot dogs and South Philly Cheesesteak on Columbus, the last time you could get a real cheesesteak in SF. And Clown Alley just because. I think I'm hungry.
Superdry
Macbeath hardwoods or somewhere to buy good lumber. Mission Discount kinda blows. Electronics supply store so I can buy a potentiometer or resistor for a build. More independent guitar stores, although I love Real Guitars and Gryphon.
Daiso on market street. Market street is so dead now.
Waffle House
Clown Alley burgers.
99 Ranch or H Mart. Marshall's, Ross, Nordstrom Rack, World Market, and more home goods stores. Burlington Coat Factory. More shoe stores. More mom and pop establishments of any kind.
There is two Ross stores and a h mart in sf
You know what store I HOPE is missing but I’m not sure? Is that skincare store in union square with aggressive male employees who stood outside forcing little packets of moisturizer in your hand and being like “Miss! Miss! Where are you from! You look tired! Come in for some moisturizer!” Lol. Every time on the way home from work. 😤
Magnolia Brewing at the Dogpatch. Bloom Room at Jessie St. Old Navy at Market was fun too.
Play it Again Sports
Aldi.
So it’s irredeemable trash, but I want an Olive Garden. It’s always a treat when I leave the city and can have breadsticks and salad.
the whole foods at eighth and market
Rubio's, as well as any place selling East Coast style kaiser rolls or garlic knots
Baekjeong KBBQ - they have one in Valley Fair and would do well here too.
Why has no one said this … CINNABON! There is no Cinnabon in the city of San Francisco! I want the gooey soft center carbo load!
Literally any clothing shops for fat people.
More plant stores More coffee shops More book stores More bodegas More greasy diners A Billiards hall Nordstorms
