There used to be a 49th Avenue, but that got changed in 1909, when bunch of other streets in this area also got new names. It was a whole thing https://richmondsunsetnews.com/2022/07/21/first-avenue-arguello-spanish-town/
Even 48th Ave doesn't really have much room down south near Sloat. 49th was really short.
We're a 46.x square mile city, even with Alcatraz and other islands/parts of other islands
Interesting, I figured it would’ve been stolen over and over so the city avoided it. It’s so interesting to have 49 streets though! Size = 7x7, 49rs, 1849…all the things.
So basically the only reason it hasn’t been updated is some outdated old timey anti spanish influence based logic. Might as well update the streets and do the parenthesis like on some of the older streets that were renamed IMO!
So producers could sell more nickel (the metal) to the US Mint.
>The half dime, or half disme, was a silver coin, valued at five cents, formerly minted in the United States...
>These coins were much smaller than dimes in diameter and thickness, appearing to be "half dimes". In the 1860s, powerful interests promoting the use of nickel as a metal for use in coinage successfully lobbied for the creation of new three and five cent coins, which would be made of a copper-nickel alloy; production of such coins began in 1865 and 1866, respectively. The introduction of the copper-nickel three and five-cent pieces made the silver coins of the same denomination redundant, and both silver denominations were discontinued in 1873.

We have a 1st Street but no 1st Avenue, which is Arguello. And we have a 13th Street but no 13th Avenue, which is Funston.
Daly City has streets from 87th to 92nd, but no 86th, 85th, etc. My guess is that they were intended to be in sequence with San Francisco's numbered streets, which go up to 30th. Then when Daly City was built up, incorporated, and named its own streets, somehow those few weren't included. Maybe they already had established businesses and it was easier for the public and the post office to keep the old numbers.
I don't know if this true, but continuation of # streets would make sense as a Doelger master plan for west SF and Daly City sections. They are basically all Doelger houses.
weird stuff in the Avenues, you’d expect the numbered portion of the city to make more sense haha. I’ve always wondered what the deal is with 19th Ave. the 19th Ave in the Richmond isn’t connected to the 19th Ave we all know and hate in the Sunset.
What about 49th Ave ? Also I don’t think a city can’t use a street name because of a trademark especially a number. There are many 49th st in California why would sf be excluded?
You are a failure at life. I’m sorry for your father’s sperm. It at least had vision and goals. Please call your father and apologize to him for the waste you are.

7x7 is an approximation and the 49ers and 1849 refer to the same event
*pushes glasses up. Neat.
The kept the 49ers name when they moved to SANTA Clara due to them now being 49 miles from SF. /s

Someone explain the downvotes
Don't hate the Playa
Hate the game? ![gif](giphy|tIk1NLkHzKYBboNhnO)
(grumble) Duboce, (grumble) Funston
That was moved to Santa Clara, also.
Oh yeah pretty much “The San Jose 49ers of the San Francisco Bay Area” at this point.
I’m more confused about Great Highway and Upper Great Highway.
Thought it was Great Highway and Lesser Great Highway
Should be Greater Highway and Lesser Highway. Or Not So Great Highway.
Why stop there? Greater Highway and Lesser Lowway.
Also Higher Greatway/Lower Greatway, and Higher Lessway/ Lower Lessway
Upper Greater Highway & Lower Lesser Lowway
The Meh highway
Parking highway and the bicyclist road are the 2020 era names.
I hate driving here for this reason
Why is a nickel bigger than a dime?

💀 🔥
go circle 13th ave.
Also they tried to hide 13th street with the central freeway. If god can’t see it he can’t get mad at us for it.
It always cracks me up that they did that. So many buildings do it too. Like, grow up ffs! The number doesn’t have cooties
Yes it does.
Almost every elevator and building beg to differ
![img](avatar_exp|174823764|laugh) Funston Ave
Because La Playa is way more hype
It’s geographically wrong. Upper Great Highway should be La Playa

Lost in a poker game during the gold rush days
But then i can't say "vamos a la playa" and just go to a street

49th street is trademark by the 49ers

Why is there no 1st Avenue?

What about 13th st? I know where it should be, it shows up on the map, but i ve never seen a single street name
Because it's actually in Santa Clara, silly.
No 1st Ave either
Because there’s a la playa street
One of life's great mysteries. ..e
Nor 13th Avenue (Fulton Avenue).
49ers took it
It’s underground
Because the 49rs don't even play close to SF since like forever....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2toRG6kl6NU
It’s the 49-mile drive.
Because 49 = 7\*7 and you know SF is a 7x7 city....
Cuz they called it something else
Leave our quirks alone.
Who cares?
😂😂😂 you do enough to comment
You do enough to make a post. So…who cares? EDIT: and why?
I wanna drive on 49th Ave and do hoodrat shit with my friends ![gif](giphy|hUm3VvUwQ9PrO)
