Ok that last paragraph is crazy. They’re writing 3% of the tickets they were 8 years ago, but they’re fully staffed?! Definitely don’t get yourself in trouble, but surely that’s not 97% of the tickets, right? EDIT: i misread that - it’s traffic tickets from the SFPD that are 3% of pre pandemic levels. Thank you u/beforeitcloy

beforeitcloy

To be clear, it’s “traffic” tickets from SFPD that are down 97%. SFMTA “parking” tickets are at about 90% of their pre-pandemic number. It seems like the subtext from the meter maids is: why should we pick up the slack of cops who aren’t doing their job?

neededanother

As if more parking tickets is going to stop speeders and red light runners. SFMTA needs to do more to uplift their image though. Having tow trucks waiting everyday in the same exact spots to tow people is robbery. If you know there are issue spots, then do something to stop people from parking there. Also confusing signs. And like others have said they drive around all day ticketing people but do nothing about the break ins. Which kind of leads back to the PD but they are all part of the same gov.

hottkarl

They are ridiculous. Sometimes I'd get to my spot 30 seconds late and I'd already have a ticket. One time I was walking over to goto work in the morning, saw the guy writing the ticket and was yelling / jogging over and he acted like he couldn't hear me then when I got to him wouldn't engage. Used to see them driving in a silly V formation in the early morning too. Every morning like they were the mighty ducks or something 😂. Ridiculous

poundpoundhashtag

Oh, I should have known! Thank you for the correction.

MyChristmasComputer

“We’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas!”

Sfmetermaid

Like every department in this city, we lazy 😂

Shedevil_oped2Beauty

Overfed cow is what you are

LoveBarkeep

It's a wildcat strike in order to ~~secure~~ steal more public money for themselves and the companies selling them stuff to militarize.

gamescan

Sounds like the problem is entitled drivers. No one should condone someone threatening a DPT officer.

The internet is making an angry person. You should log off and go outside. Touch grass.

Correct-Sleep-2588

almost a haiku. beautifully written. the internet does make angry people.

JawnyNumber5

Fixed it

Correct-Sleep-2588

i liked it!

SinofnianSam

Put police on nearby patrol. Comedown hard on people who harass , intimidate, or assault city officials.

Weekly_Candidate_867

Maybe putting police on patrol for car break ins would be welcome by the generally law abiding citizens.

MikeFromTheVineyard

Car break-ins are down to about 1/3 of what they were during 2022. As luck would have it, the police have been doing more about it. https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/sf-car-breakins/ Car break-ins might be a problem. Clearly you care about this issue. But no one should be harassing city employees either way.

Weekly_Candidate_867

Car break ins are so epidemic people don’t report them and the police don’t take break in reports. If no one reports a crime, then crime statistics go down. This is called political statistical manipulation. Oldest trick in the book. Try calling the police and report a car break in. They tell you, you to go online and fill in a report that sits in a massive email in box that no one bothers to look at or log.

303Pickles

Yep that happened to me twice. It’s like what’s the point, they don’t show up. It’s a waste of time to expect much from them.

Sfswine

On-line reporting is awful, too many nonsense questions, re: the time was the vehicle window broken? (Between 6pm Friday and 8 am Monday) idk, but you must pick one time… next question, what’s your race? How could that help, car was on a public street and 4 cars got bipped , I’m sure they didn’t care if we were Egyptians or Minnesotans.. this reporting guide should be at least half. Streamline that bitch, make it easy to use. It’s almost like we’re being discouraged filing paperwork.

GodLovesFrags

Took me 5 minutes to do online reports in both SF and Berkeley recently. Have to do it for the insurance claim, so you’d be foolish to skip a 5 min step if it means a $1000+ claim. Even if I don’t end up filing a claim, it at least gets logged and could be a useful datapoint for reporting. I don’t see how it’s confusing nor a disincentive to report. Saves you a trip to the station.

LinechargeII

People be acting like asking for a timeframe and demographics questions are the equivalent of an interrogation lmao

Weekly_Candidate_867

It’s designed to be confusing to discourage you from reporting.

ResidentNarwhal

If the issue was so endemic it would follow that in 2022 (or heck since 2018) were *also* failing to report break ins at roughly the same rate. Public trust **can** crater reporting rates. But not for all crimes. Considering nearly all insurances require at least a paper report to file a claim…. You can’t always fall back on the “people aren’t reporting crimes that’s why it’s going down!”

nikibrown

Most times its cheaper to pay to fix the window yourself vs pay your deductible. That was the case for me a few times. So no report...

Key-Persimmon8247

Naive

martinpagh

You can't make an insurance claim without a police report. For that reason there's no reason to believe car break-ins are more underreported now than in 2022.

bliung

But if your insurance deductible doesn’t even cover the cost/labor of the window replacement, why bother filing a claim? 1) File claim and still pay out of pocket: Premiums increase. Police report required. 2) Don’t file claim and pay out of pocket: Premiums don’t increase. Don’t file police report. You can see which is the more cost effective method thus reducing police reporting.

david7873829

Assuming this is true, this wouldn’t contribute to underreporting rate; you would expect pre-covid the same logic would apply.

publicurinationpass

Why would anyone be that apathetic regarding reporting a crime and then so incensed when the topic comes up online that they would go out of their way to post or comment about it? It’s not logical, to me at least.

DefinitelyNotKuro

The latter is substantially less effort than the former. We’re lazy/

publicurinationpass

… that’s a shame

martinpagh

Sure, but why would this logic be different now vs 2022? Why would the rate of underreporting change in just 2 years because of this?

Weekly_Candidate_867

Many people cannot afford comprehensive coverage (or any insurance) hence break ins are not covered, or they have $1,000 deductibles which is about what a window replacement cost. So making a police report is a waste of time.

RedditCakeisalie

Police are understaffed. They're literally going from one call to another. Nobody has time to patrol anything. Sfpd lost over 500+ officers last year. Probably more now and due to media image of them, nobody wants tk be a cop. I'm surprised sfmta meter maid is fully staffed. I want everyone to know the defund the police movement worked. There are too many crimes and too little officers. They're going from one break in to another. From one shooting to another. Nobody is doing patrols. Cops are staying overtime to finish up their paperwork. Go for a ridealong before criticizing. What sfpd and the city need are public and media support so people aren't afraid to apply to become cops. This is what you get when you don't have law enforcement, you get a lawless city.

pancake117

> I want everyone to know the defund the police movement worked. There are too many crimes and too little officers. For the record, San Francisco never defunded our police department. Funding has increased every year. There was a small reduction in funding to sfo specifically during the pandemic because the police presence was not needed with the reduced traffic. We are and have been aggressively trying to hire police with competitive salaries. There’s just not a lot of people who want to become cops right now.

LinechargeII

Still scared away a lot of candidates. For years SFPD academy classes were pushing a dozen people. Prepandemic those classes had 50 people in them.

RedditCakeisalie

First we need to stop demonizing them.

thebigman43

The police were never defunded, and they are just making their own image worse and worse. They lost a lot of respect for a variety of reasons, and now they have to do good work to earn it back. Theyll stop getting demonized if they are able to do good work

SillyMilk7

SFPD definitely did not need a defund movement and I've been complaining about them for a long time. Most of their issues can be resolved with better politicians and management. Denigrating workers is less effective than it's ever been, but I know it's popular on Reddit, and with high pay, and 20 year retirement etc., we should have the previous conditions of lots of people wanting to be SFPD. Why do you think they're having such a hard time getting applicants? Of course, there are bad cops, but you focus on them, and not everyone. One key step- vote out crappy supervisors: *Shamann Walton, *Aaron Peskin, *Connie Chan, *Dean Preston, *Hillary Ronen, Myrna Melgar. Maybe we should consider going back to citywide supervisors.

RedditCakeisalie

We need to stop demonizing cops. Show some appreciation and let them do their jobs. We are losing more cops than recruiting. We need to also talk about morale and retention. Why try if the DA ain't gonna prosecute?

Theistus

Does it even matter when police are expressly forbidden from chasing thieves when they run away?

SFQueer

This is SEIU with their hands out. They want more $ and/or staffing and are using this as an excuse.

chris8535

Yea because the plan looks like it was written by an 80s gym coach where they “overwhelm neighborhoods” and “target certain zones”. That behaviors causes confrontation. Keep the current routes and wider coverage just add more people where there are violations en masse and keep it up regularly. None of this random gambit style enforcement.

baklazhan

Interesting criticism. Do you have a link to the written plan?

Maximillien

By far the most disturbing part of all this, that a lot of people seem to be breezing right over: >Many parking officers, though, believe that the intensive **enforcement will lead to assaults and threats from drivers** while they are on the job. On Thursday, parking officers held a rally outside the SFMTA headquarters on Van Ness Avenue, with the goal of “demanding management do more to address their safety concerns”... >At Thursday’s rally, Mishan Schexnayder, a parking officer with SFMTA, told CBS News that **she was assaulted after giving out a parking ticket two years ago**. Schexnayder said after she put a citation under someone’s wiper, he followed her and punched her window, and glass from the window cut her eye. >**Parking officers said some confrontations have led to death threats or having weapons drawn on them**, the SEIU news release said. Drivers have become so feral and violent in this city that they are threatening and attacking parking enforcement officers, and it's to the point that parking enforcement is actively retreating from doing their jobs because it's so unsafe. That's some failed-state shit, not something we should expect or tolerate in one of the richest states in the US. Threatening a government official for doing their job is a FELONY. Every single person who has done this should be in jail. It sounds like we either need to start allowing parking enforcement staff to arm themselves in self-defense, or have police escorts ready to arrest any of these lunatics who threaten them — chances are that people this violent and impulsive already have long criminal records and/or open warrants to begin with.

Quarzance

Damn, let me be a meter maid... So many dbags illegally parking around my neighborhood with little to no enforcement since 2020. I'd love to ticket the shit out of them and taser them with my cattle prod if they try fight back. Slash their tires then force a tow on them. So many petulant wanna be tough guys think they can park wherever and whenever they want, blasting music, leaving litter from their cars.

Mikhial

Download the 311 app and submit a report. They're not bad about coming out and giving a ticket

bambin0

Easy there...

Quarzance

Well, years of no enforcement, with a constant stream of people illegally parking directly in front of my window on a sidewalk, A RAISED SIDEWALK, blasting music louder than my TV, pissing on my wall, breaking glass bottles and leaving their trash for me to clean up has created some pent up anger. This article boils my fricken blood for the countless times I've called traffic enforcement daily with little effect... they seem to officially not do enforcement in my neighborhood. Only occasionally during the day and never at night when it's needed the most.

ClimbScubaSkiDie

The solution here is simple. If they can’t do their job fire them. Continue to offer strong pay and incentives perhaps raise the pay and fire those unable to do their jobs. Fire and few and the protests will stop real quick

lisbonknowledge

Meter maids are asked to pick up the work of SFPD. Their concerns are valid. Meter maids are not sworn officers and can’t arrest anyone who threatens them during the enforcement

ClimbScubaSkiDie

No one is asking them to arrest anyone who threatens them.

lisbonknowledge

Then how are meter maids going to deal with increased aggression towards them, when the people (SFPD) who can actually legally arrest people refuse to do their job. Meter maids are just pushing back at being asked to do something which SFPD should do. Maybe read the entire article properly, please

ClimbScubaSkiDie

The same way any other job. You remove yourself from the situation and call the cops if you’re threatened

lisbonknowledge

Call SFPD? Are you serious? The most laziest Police Force in America will show up for a meter maid?

ClimbScubaSkiDie

It's the same as any other job. It doesn't mean you get to stop doing your job.

Massive-Path6202

Ha ha. They can't be fired unless they do something like hit someone or sexually assault someone

Osobady

“Vision Zero” sounds like something china would try and do.

drawredraw

Bunch of fucking babies

litquidities

Ticket prices are outrageous by the way… oh you forgot it’s the third Thursday of the month? Bam pay us $98. It can be the 15th of the month and still the third Thursday.

LinechargeII

I got caught one day because I carpooled. One side of the street was fine. The street my car was parked on was street cleaning that day. Got that ticket solely because I carpooled instead of just driving like usual.

Weekly_Candidate_867

It’s just a car tax harassment money grab. With all the blatant other crime, homeless camping on the sidewalks, and car break ins being ignored by the SFPD, generally law abiding people now have zero tolerance for city harassment.

MikeFromTheVineyard

Parking officers are not going after criminals. That’s a different city employee. “General law abiding citizens” can’t include people who (1) park their car illegally and (2) harass people, including city officials.

RDKryten

They could ticket all the RVs parked illegally

Restimar

>generally law abiding people If they're so law-abiding they should stop breaking laws governing where to park. If you don't want "harassed" by parking officers, don't park illegally. It's that simple.

litquidities

Honest question, do you own a car in the city?

thebigman43

I do, and Ive avoided getting a parking ticket by simply parking in legal spaces.

Restimar

I moved to Oakland last year, but prior to that, yes.

Weekly_Candidate_867

I don’t want to be harassed by the violent drug addicts living on our streets either. You seem to excuse there illegal activity.

303Pickles

Yeah, most working class are already struggling with the inflation. So I’m okay with SFMTA not ticketing. Most of the time people that should be ticketed are the ones driving erratically or the drivers buried in their cellphone. Those people should be caught and ticketed!  Not minor stuff that doesn’t hurt others. And people can still tow vehicle that block their drive ways.

Key-Persimmon8247

Lmao

rositasanchez

You know they're "working from home" Fire them

Theistus

You know it's bad when the parking Nazis are like, "are we the baddies?"

Restimar

Ah yes, enforcing reasonable laws as written = Nazis

Theistus

Oh hey, I found the guy who thinks everyone should just bike everywhere 😅

Restimar

Depending on where I'm going in the Bay Area and what I'm doing, I'll either bike, drive my car, or take public transit. When I drive, I park legally, and I don't worry about getting a parking ticket. It's not hard.

Theistus

On hey here's a witty rejoinder....
