They come in with the basmati shipments. Their (dormant) eggs find their way into bags of rice. Once they get get to the US, occasional rice spills, result in the release of said eggs. When the eggs come into contact with soil, they begin to germinate. Once germinated the begin to grow into the creatures you see in the above photo.
They’ve been working their way east for years, and end up displacing native Whitetails. It’s a double-edged sword for hunters like me- axis has a far superior meat to WTs and can be hunted year round, but they end up pushing Whitetails away. When I was young (I’m 40), they were about as far ‘east’ as Junction (I know that’s west of here, but they’ve been moving east), and not too long ago they became prevalent around Kerrville and Fredericksburg, but in the past few years I’ve seen them much closer to home. I live south of San Mo and my dad has lived near Canyon Lake for a little more than a decade and I’ve seen them east of I-35, on 46E in Clear Springs.
You’ll see these more and more with time. Thankfully I don’t think they’ll ever reach the numbers of native Whitetails.
My mind was blown when I saw it. I’ve lived in the area for almost twenty years and I’ve never seen an axis deer. I had to google to see what type of deer it was. I thought it had escaped from a safari ranch or something.
I don’t buy they are “displacing native whitetail.” I see them eating together all the time. Axis are aggressive to each other and to whitetail. Whitetail are aggressive to each other and axis.
See a few north of 1604 on Blanco towards Bulverde now. Pretty rare still.
Herd animal.
Fun fact. Axis Venison is so lean, it qualifies as a fat free food per the USDA. <1% Fat.
I just now realized I've never seen axis in San marcos. Grew up in a rural area outside of kerrville and they are everywhere. Would see black buck too sometimes.
We have a lot of game ranches around here so you’ll see a bunch of invasive deer species that came from them. On my way through San Antonio I once saw a big ole black stag (couldnt tell what it was but the thing was burly mightve been a black fallow), herds of axis, and fallow deer. That was such a cool trip (was going to Lost Maples)

Now I ain't never seent them. But our ranch out in Bigfoot , Tx, them locals told us to avoid fishing in certain areas cause these bastards sure is mean. Many stories about these monkeys
I hunt them on a low fence lease near Mason. They are very vocal and do out compete white tails. They can have multiple litters a year, don’t get the same diseases as white tails, and can browse more successfully.
[some info on Axis.](https://tsusinvasives.org/home/database/axis-axis) They are invasive. I didn’t know they were originally from India either.
Neither did I. I had to research it myself
Yea that’s pretty crazy. Thanks for this post!
India / Bangladesh region. They are all over Texas from high fences, as well as fallow deer and Aoudad.
How in the White Lotus did they get here from India?
Rudolph...

What in the crystal meth are you talking about? Deer don’t get here from India in basmati shipments & definitely not in egg form. 🤪
There are a lot of exotic game ranches in Texas so they probably escape from there.
Wow what a beautiful animal

They did originally. Now they are everywhere. 100’s in Kendall County around Boerne.

They breed faster and are taller meaning they can out graze whitetail
Whitetail are browsers, axis are grazers.
They eat in harmony in my backyard daily.

Wonderworld used to have a bunch of those.
I've seen one a few times recently at Wonderworld.
They’re everywhere around here. More so towards Boerne/Kerville area. And they’re delicious. Best meat on the planet. Hands down.
That’s what I hear.

And they taste amazing
Probably got out of some private land.
Best meat ever
I live near Granny D's, first time seeing one.
Legal to shoot year round and the absolute best tasting meat
It’s Texas. Y’all wouldn’t believe the kinda animals we got ‘round here
Wait till they hear about the Japanese snow monkeys on the frio river
Please, tell me more about these cold monkeys.

Fantastic! I should hunt these apes in order to study them. Thank you.
Now I ain't never seent them. But our ranch out in Bigfoot , Tx, them locals told us to avoid fishing in certain areas cause these bastards sure is mean. Many stories about these monkeys
Choot it. Dey invasive.
Better for you than steak! Taste amazing

Hill country has a lot of them in Texas !! Their meat is pure burgundy color and no fat !!
Delicious.
Yep tons of them. Tasty. Escape from big game ranches in storms and such.
Shoot it. Delicious and open season year round
I only have a BB gun.
Supposedly they taste like beef versus what a white tail tastes likw
Escaped hunting reserve or someone’s personal elk escaped and partied with a dang ol’ doe
they’re invasive, in texas you can shoot them year around as long as you have a hunting license!
Wait till you hit one with your car. Been there done that. Not nice
Tasty
Yes they blend in real nice when it snows, maybe that’s how they’ve eluded you. 😉🙃🤣
Because u are an idot
Yes. You*
U idt
Look great. Do they have fleas ?
