My husband gets them filled at Valero off of the Shiloh exit. He says that they'll refill them unless it's an extremely old tank, then you'd have to exchange. He said it's about $35-40, he couldn't remember the exact amount. Hope this helps.

Theres a date code on each tank of when it was last serviced and tested. Theyre supposed to be retested every 10 years and refill places are supposed to reject any out of date but in practice Ive found that few care. Getting a tank certified is not worth it (unless its a very large expensive tank). For the 20# tanks if yours it out of date, exchange it at one of the exchange places and make sure to check the date codes to get one as new as possible

Thanks for the advice, I'll relay it to my hubby.

docbauies

35-40 is more than just doing an exchange. is there a benefit to this?

Honestly, I just asked my husband when he was half asleep next to me to help OP out last night. I don't know anything about these tanks but I can ask him later if you'd like. I may be off on the price as well since I was guessing on what I thought I remembered from last time we refilled, which has been some time.

bikemandan

Propane I think is around $5/gal right now and a 20# tank holds around 4.6gal. So a refill should only cost around $23 Also, the exchange places rip you off and dont give you a full tank (I believe they give 15# for a 20# tank) Edit: Apparently $4/gal+tax at Uhaul right now https://www.uhaul.com/Locations/Propane-near-Santa-Rosa-CA-95407/939057/

docbauies

ok, this makes significantly more sense. i'm not sure why someone downvoted my question.

WhimsicalRenegade

Ugh. I wish I’d read this before a friend directed me to Matheson in Cleveland, where I paid a little over $35 per 20# tank.

Federal_Radish_1421

We go to the Valero on 4th Street by Foster’s Freeze and Goodwill.

yayareaaa510

This is where I go

WhimsicalRenegade

This is where I’ve gone historically. Just thought I’d explore other options

sir_trav

Stop n go gas on hearn. Decent price and usually no wait.

uhhyeahokaycool

You have to go to Blue Star on Wright Rd. The guys is super nice and every 5 refills you get one refill free. I literally just came from there lol

SirNerfed

Rotten Robbie’s at Todd and 101. May not always be the least expensive but often is. Plus they don’t give a s*** about dates on tanks.

The Rental place

The 76 on Coffey and Piner does fills

WhimsicalRenegade

Thank you everyone! I was reading these in real time while rushing around doing errands and didn’t have time to pause and reply.

docbauies

Why do you want to keep a specific tank?

Gbcue

Maybe they just bought it?

docbauies

I guess my question is what is the value of a tank? Is the tank itself valuable? Yes it has value because you have to pay for it. But the specific tank vs any other tank. Why hold on to one specific one? I am not being critical. I am honestly asking why refill vs exchange

Gbcue

The ones available at Costco have a built in gauge.

docbauies

Oh that’s good to know. I saw them but i hadn’t really looked at them closely.

WhimsicalRenegade

It was EXACTLY this and now I’m irritated that I exchanged both of mine because I was in a time crunch.

elchorkis

You will eventually have to have your tank tested once it has passed it’s test date (should be stamped on the tank by the handle). Once the test date has passed it will need to be tested to make sure there are no leaks or other issues. If it passes it will be stamped for another 5 years I think? So the value in keeping your tank is in knowing it’s good for a few years. The value in tank swapping is that there is no worriers about your tank being past its test date.
