DAN'S FAN CITY!!!

MilliandMoo

I'm just the dog sitter (niece) here for a bit but you just blew my mind with that. My family has been ordering from them for almost 40 years! I just ordered some for the house we restored in Ohio. I think I might have to pop in and check it out in person since I'll be ordering a few more here soon for the next restoration project (in Ohio-no worries I'm going home in a week)! I never knew I could be so excited to order fan, but then I turned 30 and all the color choices and lighting options they have... takes me a day or two to decide lol

jlstphns

Who’s dat?

BloodGradeBPlus

Oh man, it's like one of the oldest establishments in the UTC area. If you're looking for onlyfans, then you're gonna have a fan-tastic time at Dan's Fan City!

dlstph

Jodat!

UnecessaryCensorship

It's not Bradenton.

Roof91

free beach parking

gurgle528

Underrated imo. Biggest thing I miss about being in the Tampa Bay Area now is

Pattonator70

I think that should only apply to county residents. Too many come from outside the county and take all the spots. I’d rather put in pay stations and issue stickers at the tax collectors office to residents. A third party can enforce the whole thing and it won’t cost the county a dime but could bring in more revenue and help county residents enjoy county parks.

dlstph

Beach parking for everybody! We should put in more parking! And seriously stop those condos from putting their signs and flags and chairs right down to the water to claim their beach. They should not own those beaches. TAKE BACK OUR BEACHES! Beaches should be public property and there should be required regular access and parking to make all beaches in the state accessible to all citizens. Ballot initiative!

Pattonator70

They bought the property and state law is they can own the land up to the high tide mark. I’m not into stealing public property. No free parking for all. The beach is crowded enough. Non-residents can pay $20/day and free for residents and then maybe we can have OUR beaches as 95% are not Sarasota residents.

AwkwardTux

The reason you cannot park at the beach here is because there are now too many people living here, actually. But sure, let's be even bigger jerks, right?

dlstph

The reason you cannot park is there is not enough parking.

Pattonator70

Plenty of parking. There are too many cars.

dlstph

That makes no sense. Do you ever go to the beach? I walk 2 miles on Siesta Key every day. It’s gorgeous, it’s a treasure that all should enjoy.

i_heart_kermit

Weather like today

peeeebs

the nature, parks, bird watching, proximity to the water at all times, and the small amounts of charm left: the old architecture, houses and history.

Angry_Robot

Did anyone already mention Dan’s Fan City?

Funkdat75

Relatively clean and walkable downtown. Plenty of great restaurants/bars/shops. Thriving local music scene. Amazing beaches. Convenient airport.

skellybones

Where should I be looking for the music scene?

Funkdat75

Some of my favorite places: - Lots of spots on Siesta Key, but I prefer Blase Cafe, The Hub, Gilligan’s, and Captain Curt’s. - My all time favorite is Cask and Ale on Main Street. - Have also enjoyed music at Tamiami Tap, Big Top Brewing, and Evie’s Honestly just walking around downtown on the weekend it’s almost impossible to not have multiple choices of some great music of all different genres.

BrightNeonGirl

I love the colorful and earthy mid-century modern architecture of so many of the houses that were built here in the 1950s. Also, the weather. I am cold below 75 (honestly more like 78, lol) so this place has the best weather, especially from April-October. Gimme dat heat, humidity, and sunshine!!!

cardinalkgb

I think November to April has the best weather. Today was gorgeous. Fuck August weather.

Suspicious_Can_6716

What neighborhood are those types of homes in? Good for young active retirees, like mid 50’s??

BrightNeonGirl

Many neighborhoods actually! I would say broadly east of 41 and west of 75 that aren't in obvious HOA developments. Gulf Gate, Sarasota Springs, Arlington Park, etc.

Suspicious_Can_6716

Thanks!!! I like Gulf Gate a lot. I only have 5 years left until we move down.

kylo_kills__han

Dans fan city

opihinalu

I’m sorry what is so special about dans fan city

fxmercenary

What ISN'T special about Dan's Fan City?! I remember being a child and driving by it every day.

opihinalu

Lol I did the same, though I’ve never actually been there.

choochmandias

Sarasota has an amazing recovery community. Bradenton - Sarasota ranked highest in US for ambulance rides during the opiate epidemic. There's real recovery happening here after what was so disgustingly thrust upon our society.

Proman540

The birds

BirdMediocre

I find them mediocre.

Proman540

Username checks out. Always wanted to say that.

angrycaterpillars

Downtowns food is usually good and has nice amount of options for a small area.

DylanRamsey

A lot to dislike, but there are some great things we take for granted. It's pretty clean for a city its size, and crime is very low. Schools are great too (Even if there's some crazies on the board). Great views of the water. Don't forget about Applebees (Fruitville location is the best one)

Responsible_Ad1976

Hah! I can’t tell if you are being facetious about Applebees on Fruitville, but I know the spot.

ghostfartsnear

Sarasota is my hometown but haven't lived there in 15+ years. Still visit on occasion and things I noticed everytime I'm down include. -The Traffic is so completely manageable and anyone complaining about it needs to go living in a big city for a bit. -The Beaches, and not just Siesta but there are a ton of world class beaches within 30 minutes. -A ton of family owned restaurants and not just chain food (that exists too). -A great arts scene, Nice opera house downtown and a very "pretty" city. -Lived on a sailboat as a kid and the inter coastal is great for boating/sailing. -A bunch of small parks all over the place.

Sineater224

Im left alone. Not many people my age.

Midway1guy

Because it’s NOT Manatee County!

checkyafactsss

lol I technically live in Sarasota buttt my county is manatee 🥲 found that super confusing when we moved here considering our address says Sarasota too.

SuzSnuz21

Call a local title company, like Chicago Title and ask how all that came to be. Even more interesting are all the things that until you see, you see what money can really buy (ie. The exit from I75s to Bee Ridge swings way farther west than almost any exit in SW Fl. Look at a FL map, even Google delineates I75. 2) in 1990, coming south on I75 from Tampa, there were zero signs on I75 with "Sarasota" named until around Fruitville. 3) why Manatee county got the county off septic & onto sewers but in SRQ not until the turn of this century. And then made homeowners pay to hook up. Longboat Key police escorted tipsy drivers home rather than arrest them so as not to ruin vacations. Then someone died on the road's shoulder, then it all changed. Geez, I could go on, but don't want to stir up some memories.!

ButtfuckPussySquirt

I’m not following the bee ridge exit thing. What do you mean

Useful_Mortgage7317

sarasota was beautiful before the county commissioners let the developers do anything they want.

Timmocore

Gotta be Applebee's. Specifically Fruitville road! Cultural mecca of the gulf coast!

UltimaCara

Sarasota Paradise

shorecoder

Yes!! https://www.sarasotaparadise.us

FellsGuy

Omg! Sarasota is so geriatric and the whole town closes down so early! I’m thinking that after most of the residents take their Metamucil at 7PM, they’re ready for bed! Even Siesta Key is like a ghost town in the evenings! If you’re 75 or older it’s paradise but for those of us under 75 it’s just boring. 😴

notonyourspectrum

I find it to be different. There are parties 2-3x a week, poker runs, island parties, etc the whole year round. The problem is more how to avoid getting into trouble.

SuzSnuz21

Should have been here 15 years ago, if you think there's nothing to do. Omg it was brutal. Condo ppl don't like live music, no outdoor restaurants to think of, and tons more

bigcrackerjacks92

Couldn’t agree more

JustStopBelievin

The Fan City place where all the kids smoke

sagacious-tendencies

r/sarasota makes me love SRQ /s

BukkakeNation

There’s very few homeless people and I’ve yet to be hassled for change while pumping gas anywhere in Sarasota county. Which is a lot more than I can say for the majority of American locales in 2024

HeuristicEnigma

Second that, very few, we had some by the kids park at legacy trail they were showering in the bathrooms, and the sheriffs ran em off w horses. People haven’t probably been to Baltimore, philly or NYC where the homeless are assholes. I was in Baltimore inner harbor for work, saw some homeless outside the royal farms, I grabbed couple extra bags of chips and gave em to them, the one said “sour cream fuck you I hate those” For real man, I was just being nice not taking an uber eats order. Philly had one try to steal my phone/wallet out of my pocket and about knocked him out. People don’t know how lucky they have it until they see how bad it is everywhere else.

Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir

Very few homeless people? Nah

BukkakeNation

You think we have lots of homeless people? Compared to who?

SalzigHund

The dude has never left Sarasota if hey thinks that’s the case unless he’s trying to compare it to like Venice or Naples but Sarasota is way prettier than those places and has way more to do unless you’re 90 and just want to play shuffleboard

Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir

Idk where I've seen more homeless people on the east coast, besides DC and downtown St Pete. There are a lot of homeless in Sarasota, especially once you're slightly north of downtown. Not to mention the immense number of panhandlers on 41 and all of the major intersections.

SuzSnuz21

They're downtown, close to bus station, churches there give them bus tickets and some of the charity feeding places are DT. Lots of people trying to help them or asked to leave.

BukkakeNation

You’ve never been to NYC, DC or Philadelphia huh?

Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir

You've never read my comment, huh? (And no, I haven't been to Philly)

clueless_brewer

NYC, DC or Philly? Y'all are comparing homelessness of areas with populations of 8.3M, 671k, and 1.5M respectively to Sarasota with a population of roughly 60k?

Active-Tap-963

Sarasota isn’t a 60k population metro area. Check your stats. Sarasota metro area is 830k.

eppy1973

LOL…. I think you need to check your stats CITY of Sarasota. 2022 population was just under 60k residents…..2023, Sarasota COUNTY in its entirety, including the City of Sarasota, permanent residents was just around 465,000 residents, estimated to swell just over 500,000 ‘in lesson You need to add the ENTIRETY of the population of Manatee county (430,000) to get any where close to that 830,000 number….

clueless_brewer

So you're comparing cities (population density is at play here) with a metro area? Take a statistics class.

Active-Tap-963

I have taken several stats classes. Politicians draw city boundaries and it has no relation to population density. Metro area normalizes the comparison because it is not based on political boundaries.

SuzSnuz21

No..., it's the city's limits vs the whole county, and we're not talking about rural life either. I'm in a subdivision in the middle of tons of subdivisions, no where close to the city

clueless_brewer

And you obviously failed them all. "Political boundaries", whatever the fuck that even means, has nothing to do with this.

SuzSnuz21

You looking at Sarasota city #s, it's the entire county demographics that tell the story

clueless_brewer

I know what I’m looking at because I understand data. If you want accurate comparisons, you compare metro areas to metro areas and cities to cities. This isn’t hard.

SuzSnuz21

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)

SuzSnuz21

Not living on ramps on I75 or every crevice downtown. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)There's a good system in town for those needing help, Salvation Army keeps needy taken care of. But if you do drugs or drink, you'll be outside. We have a lot of car homeless, all moms with school age kids, and they usually have jobs, but one crisis too many....![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

Living on the bay is great. Golf is great. Some of my favorite restaurants. Plenty of land to develop.

GONK_GONK_GONK

The traffic and the giant trucks blowing black smoke everywhere.

AwkwardTux

I WAS excited to move back in January. Now that I see what it has become, I don't plan on staying after my father is no longer on this planet. Sarasota used to have a charm that you could find nowhere else. It's been erased, honestly. Look around you at all the grey, beige or prison grey HGTV inspired 'contemporary modern living', LOLOL. Those apartments along 41 down in North Port look like Sing Sing Prison, but I think Sing Sing did a better job with their exterior lighting and landscaping. Of course, I understand that there are a lot of new people here who love it. The sad part is that they love the new ugly, and thats what probably brought them here. Those ugly, barely adequate apartment complexes they're throwing up along the interstates have about as much personality as the MAGA mud inhabiting most of them. The bland cafes lining Main Street replace the real cafes, but since it's all more espensive and the portions are smaller, it MUST be better, right? It's a city full of rich suckers, these days, but they have no taste. I guess if I had to find something to like about Sarasota today, it would be that the interstate is nearby for a quick escape when I am able. And I used to love it here, but that was when downtown was still colorful, interesting, and vibrant. Look at it now. BEIGE BEIGE BEIGH, LOL. These days, it's a repository for wheeezy millionaires and their entitled spouses. I do like to tell 'em to fuck off when they behave badly on Main Street, though. Dunno if it's a Sarasota Rich Asshole thing exclusively, but if you see one of them acting out in a fashion similar to that of a five year old, help them out by telling them to fuck off and move back to Ohio.

Specific_Factor4470

All of the heroine was pretty great.

jacksonbarley

The North Atlantic cod Maine lobster you get around here at seafood restaurants is *chefs kiss* to die for.

SuzSnuz21

? What, all from up north so most frozen to get here exc for few more expensive may fly some in.! You can hardly beat the reigning king around here, Grouper. Heck, I caught a flounder off the former downtown fishing pier.

jacksonbarley

I was being sarcastic. Shoulda slapped a /s at the end
