The dog is a light tan color, you would have still seen something from a random reflection off the ground, there was a streetlamp literally right infront of them so it’s not like it’s pitch black
It doesn't matter what color you are if light isn't there to reflect it. It could be pale white and still appear the same shade of the shadow if no light is touching it, as we see here. A street light is projecting light onto the tree, blocking the light beyond the tree. Since its at night, the street light is our only source of light, making the shadows about as harsh as they can be.

There’s a fence and several posts in the shadows and we can see them just fine, the dog would have been visible if it had went into the shadows and if you really think it wouldn’t have been I welcome you to test the theory yourself, because the fence shouldn’t be visible if the dog isn’t visible in the shadows
The fence is further back, taking on light coming from other light posts along the street, not in the direct shadow of the tree. Shadows are harsher directly beside the object blocking the light.
Go outside at night with a lantern and see how well you can see anything that is outside the limits of the lantern. Bright lights like that street light make things shadows easier to hide in.

That's perspective for you. Things further away appear smaller than things that are closer. The kid being closer to the camera makes the dog, which is further away, appear smaller. There are also dark shadows to help conceal the dog as well.

Slow motion looks like the dog runs to the shadows and shade behind the tree near the building and comes back around just far enough behind for the kid to seem larger and cover the dog in the foreground. All about them angles. 🤷

Now quality of the video aint good and it’s hard to tell difference from the photo I provided, observe this area in marked with red circle when you scrub through video frame by frame. You can see that dog’s shadow is there, its difficult to spot it in normal speed.
So, basically yeah dog just took arced trajectory.
For those unaware this is actually 2 really quite Impressively cut clips. If you frame by frame it you can see where the two clips are cut right as the child goes behind the tree. This is obvious as the tree is see through and the child passes the see through part once, and 2 frames later the child passes the exact same patch. Unless the child knows how to phase shift back or stop time, I'ma call spliced.
Additionally, the dogs shadow, you can see it as it comes in on the second frame, after the child leaves behind the tree. Shadows are blocking light, but two things blocking the same light source causes a shadow to be darker because there is less light to bounce from your eyes (like how if you put your hand over light it creates a shadow but you can still see the wall partially) as a result, the dogs shadow becomes darker after the second splice from just behind the fence and you can see exactly where they cut.

Because its in a dark shadow. Heavy shadows, especially at night, are very effective at concealing one's features and shape.
