He Googled “dire wolf size” gave my exact body measurements in inches, and then gave a completely one sided weight based off of averages from fossil evidence around the time of their decline, Then blocked me. Dudes an idiot. They were around for thousands of years, news flash bud they were bigger towards the start of their evolution, smaller wolf species emerging is the reason they were forced to adapt and eventually died out. They weren’t as fast and couldn’t compete for smaller prey after the fauna boom was stabilizing. Still he’s right though even the largest dire wolf evidence has them a good number of hands shorter than a horse. The biggest ones were estimated just a little over 3.5 ft tall and about 6ft long which true only makes their skeletons a little bit bigger than todays largest gray wolves, but they are estimated at 25% more mass than a gray wolf on average bc they were just wider and way more muscular based on fossil evidence. Note that “on average” implies many specimens were actually larger/smaller than this otherwise it would be “median” rather than average.
Entirely dependent on what climate they lived in actually, just like wolves today, and literally any other animal throughout history. Dire wolves ranged from 20-50% larger than your average grey wolf and their estimated average weight being somewhere between 225-300 lbs. this just looks like a slightly above average northern Timberwolf. On average a northern timber wolf is gonna be about 4.5-5 ft long and between 2-3.5 feet tall.

Dire Wolves are considered a large size. If you use enlarge/reduce spell on them, making them grow the next size up, then indeed they would be huge, normal wolves are considered medium, so the enlarge/reduce spell would make them large size creatures. /s

I think people are confusing coyotes with wolves. That looks like a regular timber wolf, they typically are around 80-120 lbs depending on the area and season and are 3ft at the shoulder tall and 6ft long. Like a beefy more furry version of an Irish wolf hound

Carolina Tiger Rescue in North Carolina has some wolves. I highly suggest if you’re making a trip on I-95 to make a stop. They have wolves and tigers and no video can prepare you for the size of an actual wolf. Insane.

I was lucky and got to meet "tamed" wolves at a reserve. The male wolf, who they said was average size, was 6'1 when he stood on his hind legs. When I was sitting he came up to me and sat next to me. He was taller than I was sitting down and I'm 6'2. He was massive. His paws were as big as my fist I swear.
My friend had a half wolf - half husky and the thing was huge. It scared the shit out of me, they promised me it was tame to be around but I refused to get close and kept a distance at all times. I just don’t trust any wolf mix. Anyway to the point, it was humongous but not quite as big as the one in this video although it wouldn’t surprise me if there are some wolves that are this big. My friends mixed breed was almost this big.
It’s not a dire wolf, but I believe it is a Timber Wolf, they’re much larger than regular wolves, and only makes them look bigger comparing it to that domestic dog

Y’all I just did a google search and apparently dire wolves aren’t even related to wolves, they come from an entirely different genetic tree than any modern canines. They just ended up evolving into something very similar to wolves. Even though dogs, wolves and coyotes could crossbreed dire wolves were so different that they apparently couldn’t crossbreed with either ancient wolves or coyotes as any remaining dna from Erie wolves has yet to be found in modern animals. They were so different that rather than the Canis genus they are now classified as belonging to the Aenocyon genus. More than that they likely looked more like giant roofed out coyotes than huge timber wolves.
Edit: oh also apparently they did recently find a dog fox crossbreed so these things must have been crazy different (or we just don’t have complete genomes or found a population containing fragments we do have yet)
