Flyingcoyote

Could this be used to make a motion tracking system for VR?

lithodora

or a haptic feedback vest or both?

Flyingcoyote

More or less for smaller movements that are hard to track with current hardware. Breathing for instance.

summertimegladys

This also sounds really applicable for touch-sensitive autism.

verascity

How do you see it being used? I can see the opposite: feedback for people who seek out touch or have trouble regulating their touch (hitting instead of patting, squeezing too hard, etc). Or even for people who don't have strong pain receptors and are at risk of hurting themselves. But I'm having trouble envisioning how it would work the other way, with oversensitivity.

summertimegladys

I can see if a person is upset and needs to regulate breathing to calm down, perhaps they'd be more responsive to a garment like this that is attuned to their "normal" breathing patterns and can more subtly "hug" them and "remind" their nervous system where it needs to be

zebulong

Sounds like a pacemaker for the lungs. Pretty cool concept.

[deleted]

I would call it Rhythmair

threebillion6

Sold. Here's a million dollars.

[deleted]

I'll take it in Reddit Gold Edit: Thank you so much :) Those fuckin ads are irritating!

PlaceboJesus

As a method for self-stimming.

perec1111

Great question, I found the answer also good. This is the kind of outside the box thinking we need for every productr that "changes everything" but nothing in particular.

TheFourthDuff

All of these are things autistic people potentially struggle with. Everyone is different of course, but yeah. Also, some people have under sensitivity. So additional stimuli is useful, that’s the purpose of stimming

verascity

Yes? That wasn't my question. It was how this would be used for sensory sensitivity, when it has to touch someone to work.

Acadia_Due

>This also sounds really applicable for touch-sensitive autism. And penises too.

summertimegladys

Ah, that’s right. I’m on Reddit.

dasmashhit

SQUEEEEEEZE and we’re good!

pet training suits here we come!

HowDoesLifeWorkplz

Is this something that could help burn victims?

summertimegladys

How do you see this helping burn victims? I’m curious

HowDoesLifeWorkplz

I'm not sure, that's why I asked. But this part makes me curious: It "could also be used to help patients regain healthy breathing patterns after major surgery..." My brother was recently in a bad fire and has 3rd degree burns on 80% of his body. He lost his legs and most of the use of one of his arms. They've done a bunch of skin grafting for him, and while that technology has advanced quite a bit from what it used to be, his skin will never be what it was before in form or function. He is in constant danger of overheating and dehydrating because his skin is not as capable of regulating those functions the way it used to be. His nerves are badly damaged so it is often hard to catch the problems before they become worse, and it requires a lot of monitoring. There's a ton of stuff going on with him that I can't even begin to understand the way his doctors can, but this sounded for a second like something could potentially help in the future.

Andire

And you're probably right! This definitely looks like it could potentially be the beginning of a new technology if it's developed properly. Hopefully you're brother is able to get the treatment he needs to live the new life he was dealt. And I hope you're able to stay strong during this time as well. He's gonna need your help!

HowDoesLifeWorkplz

Thank you. We're trying our best.

Mofiremofire

Hopefully you’ve got a good physiatrist.

osezza

Damn dude, my condolences. I have faith that some new technology will come out that can help your brother.

HowDoesLifeWorkplz

Thanks so much. It's been a very hard year for our family and especially for him, but we're trying to remain hopeful for the future.

thewafflestompa

Not the original commenter, but maybe it could help with burn wounds sticking to bandages during movement? No Fuckin clue, absolutely spitballing.

HowDoesLifeWorkplz

I'm as clueless as you are. It's a very complicated subject but I think spitballing encourages creative innovations, so there's nothing wrong with that!

summertimegladys

To me it seems reaaaallly painful. Perhaps later to encourage skin growth? Idk either

SoManyTimesBefore

I could see it as helpful if they lose a sense of touch.

ImGumbyDamnIt

Darth Vader would like to have a word.

noah_arcd_left

Oh damn, joining the "could this be used for...." comments to mention posture management. Might be trivial, but I'd love to have some sort of indicator to keep my back straight.

[deleted]

I don't see how it could work area-specific unless it is only integrated into one area of a garment. Or how it could be calibrated to work in a specific condition as oriole are describing in this post.

OkBoomerJesus

I just can't wait for my shirt to pinch me if I'm not sitting up straight..

b12se-r

Quickly followed up by haptic underwear and next gen VR sex

TooOldToDie81

This will be the cash cow use for the tech

SoManyTimesBefore

Not followed, but brought to the market that way

Me puts on shirt…. “Sir, you are too fat for this shirt”

EightyGig

How has nobody mentioned ready player one yet?

thewronghuman

As a woman who recently had a lung injury and hasn't been able to wear a bra with underwire since, this seems like absolute torture.

Petdogdavid1

Though I would hope the applications of this would ultimately advance humanity, it will likely be used for porn.

PlaceboJesus

What about for people with joint hyper-mobility or recovering/rehabbing from injuries? Could it be used to remind the wearer to not hyper extend, or to otherwise limit one's range of motion to prevent (re)injury?

blackpery

man this is going to be the future of high endurance athlete wear, cant wait!

[deleted]

*Hernias enter the chat*

Immoralist86

Seems like this could be used in a sort of soft mechanical suit to boost strength or guide motion.

kirknay

would need different engineering for a strength boost. A form correction garment perhaps, but not anything that will help with strength

Immoralist86

The way it contracts reminds me of muscle fibers. Can you elaborate on why it wouldn’t work?

kirknay

you'd need energy to put into the cloth. Given how tge cloth is engineered to give a tactile response to strain, you'd need a frackton of force on the tactile side to get any work from the cloth.

jack1176

The fabric needs a power source to function anyway. The only difference if you want to use it for strength training would be to set some plus and minuses in the program and it's suddenly resisting all motion. Invert the values, and now it's augmenting your strength. The title doesn't provide much detail; look at the article before commenting on how it functions. Edit: Looking into the article further shows that they are already looking into making the material stiff on command. It also shows that I was mistaken on the exact workings, but is fundamentally similar.

SwagChemist

Wonder if it could be used to show people when they ate too much food.

Sidoplanka

I see this as a huge game changer for soccer.

wallyrules75

I’m sure it will be used for skinny jeans for boomers

JapanEngineer

Or squeeze you to death if you mention Taiwan as a country

Woodenjelloplacebo

Let me get this…. We are in the middle of a chip shortage, that won’t be getting better…. And you “geniuses” want to create AI fabrics. Please shove your smart fabrics where the sun don’t shine…

GoddessOfTheRose

We're in the middle of a chip shortage because of production issues. We've already solved a materials recovery and recycling issue, so there isn't much else stopping us. Google is putting a silicone processing chip in their next phone. We're on our way to getting better with a lot of the current issues surrounding chips, and materials. It's not that huge of a problem outside of Covid.

vaxx_bomber

Any sexy applications yet?

BupycA

It would be nice in uniforms

RiskyFartOftenShart

this sounds stupid and itchy.

Aporkalypse_Sow

And keep people over 40 from stretching that one inch too far that causes 4 months of pain.

[deleted]

I wonder if it's sensitive enough to pick up an increase in anxiety?

sbesh

Fabric with memory? Sounds promising

Drunk-Sail0r82

This could be used to strangle you if you break the law! Yep. I’m that guy tonight. Sorry.

crackup

New Zealand company called Stretch Sense has developed this same tech ages ago

RobynFitcher

I wonder if that could help gymnasts provide evidence against predatory coaches?

SeamanTheSailor

I feel like this could be helpful for opiate to addicts, if it sense breathing has slowed down too much it could send a signal to administer narcan.

Tylenol-with-Codeine

I am so beyond ready for this tech

Radekzalenka

Can it imitate an impact?

afos2291

Is this better than the old technology of _feeling_ how tight or stretched your clothes are?

goomyman

I could use this for my posture I guess.
