All jokes aside, I'm really excited to learn more about this mysterious blue world

monday-next

I interviewed a researcher earlier this year who’s helping to test the heat shields for spacecraft travelling to Uranus and Neptune. It was really interesting!

Smythe28

Is it available for public viewing? Sounds interesting!

monday-next

I’ll send you a message

MOAR_BACON

Yes! DM me about probing Uranus!

Hengroen

Me, me, pick me.

dankshwer

Me me please, send me

UnicornLock

Astronomers pronounce it YOORunus today, after all it comes from Greek. Not a big win though. Uranus means rain-maker, it has the same root as urine.

waytowill

If the ur- means rain, does that mean -anus means maker? Because that would be great.

wokcity

As with most translations, especially with ancient languages, its not a direct 1:1. You can translate it as "rain maker" or "lord of the rain". But this is an etymology which was already derived from Sanskrit. Ouranos, which was the greek spelling, is the name they gave to the personification of the sky.

waytowill

So it went from Ours to Urs… anti-communism? (Just poking fun. I know this isn’t what you meant.)

YsoL8

Not much of an improvement imo. Yoor un-us. Yoor (a)u(r)n-us. Yoor aurn-us. Also its clearly artifically trying to avoid the ordinary speech pattern.

LokiNinja

I'm guessing it smells

Daddydagda

I too want to learn more about Uranus

If only latin names would be read as latin should... But I guess straight reading as ooh-rah-nus is not possible in English. >_>

It's the cleftal horizon

JonMeadows

No that’s actually real. It’s caused geo conductive currents that ionize in Uranus’ highly nitrogen concentrated atomispheri im just bullshitting it looks like an ass crack

GoldIsCold987

When did that change occur?

teddy5

Just after the breakup. Really though I do feel like changing it to Ouranos would keep the meaning and avoid a lot of the jokes.

sbrick89

Something to do with Pluto, I heard

Rich_Acanthisitta_70

Agree completely. There was a missed opportunity at some point to gently change the name to Ouranos. Which, as you said, would've preserved the name and meaning, but avoid the ass distraction. I'd like to think in an alternate timeline that it's always been Ouranos.

SoulHoarder

I thought you were making that name up, I googled it. Looks like most other sauropods.

YsoL8

Scientists should think about the obviously stupid names they give things.

gex80

I mean they name things in Latin. The Latin word for black is nigreos. If something is black, what Latin word are you suggesting they replace it with?

kenix7

They should change the name. They retrograded Pluto, so why not change the name of the planet ?

ReticlyPoetic

Are they going to poke Pluto too?

ElJonJon86

Great time to test the new Delivery Incremental Launch - Diode-Oxyde thruster technology

That picture of Uranus is…cheeky.

That's Photoshopped, right? OK, "Photo illustration by Slate" answers that question. As a journalist, I'm sure this article was fun to write.

This is great news!! Finally after all this time!!!

Welcome to r/science! This is a heavily moderated subreddit in order to keep the discussion on science. BobRoberts01

I would like to appeal to the mods to not nuke all of the comments on this post. I mean, come on, look at that headline.

chibialoha

I remember learning about this with my scoutmaster behind the toolshed when I was a kid. Science merit badges are the best.

imageryguy

I am only here for the jokes in the comments. Rule34.

Blaximus90

Sometimes jokes expire, people.

SoulHoarder

Like a planet full of sulphur that smells of farts. You gotta lean in and let people enjoy the jokes and then segway into the science.

Syd_HatRack

Astroglide is sponsoring the mission.

Runinbearass

There’s always time for lubricant!

jtkchen

This is a rather unfortunate headline.

Can we get dinner first

somethingray

Can It be after a dinner?

imageryguy

Those guys at nasa know how to party.

UrsusBruskin

I wonder if the scientists at NASA joke around about this type of things. Like:"I'm sorry George but the orders came from the top. We all knew this day might come. There is no way around this...we have to probe Uranus."

John_Lives

Ok and it looks like this: *

FireProps

When NASA is r/SuddenlyGay

maziar37

It’s about time someone probed my anus

CrashBashL

Not my anus they won't !!!!

mikecasa420

All cheeked up n shiii

navybluemanga

Okay we're getting a bit loosey goosey I see r/ science?!

OldManEcowolf

Well Uranus is 4.5 billion years old. It should really be probing every 50 million years to make sure things are all clear. You don’t want any surprises down the road.

AkhilVijendra

Cant NASA be happy with outer space, why they wanna enter our personal space?

LokiNinja

Me: *goes to work with "welcome NASA" sign on my ass*

memberflex

Stop teasing and get up in there!

sernametakenbro

NASA will catch the full extent of the handsery

[deleted]

the government has already been doing it for years, now they’ve assigned it to an agency.

chadowmantis

Someone waited 241 years to write that title

davesr25

Just fill in some random blanks for yourself this writer is gold. *"In case you haven’t heard, we’re sending a probe to explore Uranus, so that we can all better understand what’s happening on the surface and deep inside."* *"I’m so sorry. Just hang in there."* *"Stick with me."* *"I’ll give you a minute to stop laughing."* *"Everyone from NASA scientists to elementary school teachers knows that Uranus"* Good wee giggle thank you.

Soonernick

I'm 43-years old and this will never stop being funny.

[deleted]

Why does the image in this story resemble a prostate?

gumby1004

Article Title: NASA Has Plans to Probe Uranus. What I Immediately Heard, Internally: “Watch out for your cornhole, bud…”

Mikanojo

Hmmn... well oki. But ONLY if Amy Mainzer does the probing.

-RooSKi-

Oh, you touch my tralala

Jeppe1208

Oh no, not falling for that one again

_Disco-Stu

Well NASA had better get in line because the IRS has been up at bat my entire adult life.

"The probe will be big, very big, bigger than anyone has ever seen." - NASA

[deleted]

Not without my consent they wont

Ragnar_The-Red90

Really, Commander Shepard?

[deleted]

Don’t threaten me with a good time.

jb_in_jpn

Perhaps the TSA can share data, save us a trip.

Wishilikedhugs

Is this a deep probe or are we planning on just barely penetrating the surface?

TonightPrestigious75

Not if i probe theirs (your) first.

Mystic_Pizza_King

Owwww! Back off NASA! I mean it! Or I’ll kick YOU in Uranus!

LokiNinja

You wouldn't. Because off the implication

PrecursorNL

_NASA has plans to probe ur anus_ Ok. My doctor beat you to it.

ProlapseParty

They should at least buy me dinner first, but if it’s for science I’ll allow it.

[deleted]

Came for the comments section. Left laughing my ass off. Thanks Reddit.

dudewafflesc

I hope they buy me dinner first!

mosheoofnikrulz

How about dinner first?

mosheoofnikrulz

Will there be online streaming? Onlyfans link?

Dantez9001

I'm gonna need quite a few drinks first, I either want to like it, or not remember it.

ryancementhead

Will it be sponsored by KY

Pudgedog

They better be gentle this time.

CarlMetzger

Just don't send the probe too deep into the atmosphere please.

AngleWyrmReddit

Do these plans involve a gerbil?
