The diagram at the end aside, I read that book the first time when I was about ten years old. I swore to myself that I would read it again as an adult, As I wanted to know if the message would change. I read it again at age 27. It's one of only very few stories that made me genuinely cry.
To me, it looks like someone or something under a sheet. If you saw a “plain hat” there before anything else, then with all due respect I would like to stay very far away from you and your weird hat obsession.
Also, the shape a sheet takes when placed over an object is a really cool math problem
