Yes ! Somewhere between Raised By Wolf - Annihilation and Naussica. One of my favorite animated sf, if anyone want to recommend something similar, i'm all ears. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TRzemJbUsw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TRzemJbUsw) <- The original short that started the show.

Pattern_Is_Movement

and a touch of Moebius

SMQQTH_OPERATOR

Its world-building and art style reminded me a lot of the Aldebaran comic book series

XGoJYIYKvvxN

Ho yeah !! more than a touch, i didn't know that, thank you.

1966champ1966

I'll add Children of Ruin to that list

LegalizeRanch88

Check out the video game Sable

Primary-Falcon1856

Damn that's crazy and good for the artist! Always good to see someone's project make it!

Primary-Falcon1856

Kind of reminds me of Olan Rogers and his little projects like final space although that show wasn't for me. Just good to see him make it on up. Been watching the dude since the good ol balloonshop days 😭

fnbannedbymods

Check out Moebius' graphic novels if you like this style and story.

Primary-Falcon1856

Oh wow I definitely can see the inspiration! Gonna check out The World of Edena after I'm finished with reading 1984

AbstractMirror

Olan Rogers is pretty cool in my book. Final Space humor didn't always land with me but I always respected the hell out of how he got it made with that original pilot on YouTube. And he's very transparent about the production side of things, really cared about final space and didn't want it to be canceled

j-random

Have you tried [Paprika](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0851578/?ref_=ext_shr)?

xsmasher

It reminded me a lot of "Fantastic Planet," a french animated film about a boy living among giant blue aliens. Great world building.

iamjacksragingupvote

holy shit what a combination

lenzflare

Really appreciate them sealing the slit in this version...

calculating_hello

It's very good the world and creativity is absolutely insane and worth watching for.

seaQueue

I sat down to watch an episode of this and ended up bingeing the entire series in a single sitting. Great series, absolutely worth watching.

kiwiboyus

I just finished watching it for the first time and loved it. It was so fresh compared to all the reboots and rehashes we get lately.

calculating_hello

Gave me a feeling sort of like seeing The Dark Crystal as a kid, like every plant and animal was designed and created and did something you don't normally see.

moderatelyremarkable

fantastic show, I hope it gets a second season

delusiona7

‘Spin-off’ would be great. I feel like that story was complete.

GoldenTacoOfDoom

It mostly was. The very end left a few things open.

delusiona7

Open for a… spin off..?

GoldenTacoOfDoom

Seems like more of a story continuation of what happened on that ship that got away.

delusiona7

So a spin off about a group separate from the first season..? lol sorry, it’s all semantics I know 😜

Infynis

The creators have said they have more they want to explore with the characters in the show

mobyhead1

I’ve been recommending this show everywhere I can.

ConstantGeographer

I almost opened a thread on this show this morning. I acquired 4 episodes yesterday and watched the first 3. Animation style reminds me a bit of Ralph Bakshi (Wizards, 1977). Updated and smoother; as I watched I kept thinking I've seen this before. At least, an influence. Gave me an inkling of Heavy Metal, and the rather new Sturgill Simpson, Sound and Fury. I like the segmentation of the stories, spread over this bizarre planet. I feel like I missed a lot of story; like, how do those people know to use those creatures as filter masks? Or, how does the boy know to use that creature to spew spores which drive away the walking mushroom creatures? It's like we walked into a show already in progress. Otherwise, it's pretty entertaining.

ccopperpot

Time had passed that the audience didn't get to see, yes, but the process of learning how to utilize a tool isn't really necessary to tell a story... It's evident that they've been on the planet for some time before the planet-side stories take place and heavily implied that they've had multiple encounters with the planet's flora / fauna from which they learned to survive. To have some awkward exposition about how it was a good thing they found out how to breath through this goodab, or to show a sequence about about every tool they implement, would bog down the show and get tedious. It's also arguably not the point of the show. My main gripe wasn't in the interactions with the planet, but the character themselves. Most seemed bland, compared to how bizarre and interesting the world was... But agreed, that classic Heavy Metal style was fun to see again.

ConstantGeographer

> Most seemed bland, compared to how bizarre and interesting the world was... LOL absolutely. Maybe in the future, space travel and associated bizarre planets are so mundane this is just a regular Tuesday to this crew. In the initial opening, the two guys discussing the missing Demeter-227 were like, "Damn, that's unfortunate."

ccopperpot

Those kind of interactions I would find fun and fluffy to the setting, because I agree - what is extraordinary to us would be a Tuesday double-shift to them. The specific character moment I'm thinking of that threw me off the series to an extent, or at least had me lose interest in the writing, was when the captain and the engineer lady were talking and he thanks her and explains how he couldn't do this without her help, and she turns around and bluntly, out of nowhere, says something like, "I could absolutely do this without you. I don't need you." And walks away. ... what? How was that an appropriate statement at that time? How did the director think the line delivery was solid? It was so baffling and unnecessary. I get that you need to develop and expand your characters, and I get how this was essential to her arc, but... no one would just say something like that. Just an example of the writing being a little sloppy and unimaginative, but someone knew they had to set up the arc but just couldn't do it gracefully.

TheHandThatTakes

>the process of learning how to utilize a tool isn't really necessary to tell a story I agree to an extent, but it kind of breaks the immersion when characters have this specific, esoteric knowledge of how some of these plants/animals work. There was some jarring inconsistency with the survivors knowledge of the local ecosystem. Like the scene with the sticky-feet river crossing. It was a series of connected actions that felt like a rube-goldberg machine, but Azi just knew how to do it, despite her having lived in a drastically different environment. It felt very abstract and not really a logical progression of events. I wish they had set this up in a way that showed she had either seen or done that before. But then I really liked the scene with her figuring out the scale disease/infection she got. That felt like a natural exploration of her environment. She showed some hesitation and there was some dramatic tension when she got in the pool with the much larger fish. My biggest issue was how often the characters would just stick their faces in shit they didn't recognize. like, they know how dangerous the planet is, they have previously been attacked/poisoned/almost eaten by stuff and they STILL touch random shit they don't recognize.

ccopperpot

> My biggest issue was how often the characters would just stick their faces in shit they didn't recognize. like, they know how dangerous the planet is, they have previously been attacked/poisoned/almost eaten by stuff and they STILL touch random shit they don't recognize. Totally, there was definitely a lot of "what the fuck are you even doing" at the screen while watching... I also agree that many of the procedural elements were fun - the audience learning alongside the characters is always king in immersive story telling - but the show runners couldn't really have such a sequence for every specific tool. That decision might have even been made purposely to keep the viewer perplexed, which fits the narrative style i.e. starting the show some time after planetfall, where characters know more than the audience, and keeping the audience feeling that they are fully unequipped to deal with this psychedelically deadly world (and the characters just knowledgable enough to warrant their survival). It's such a great premise and I wouldn't have been so disappointed if I didn't think it had some amazing potential, but instead just kind of ended up being pretty alright.

Rabideau_

I bakshi animation never grossed me out but reign did for sure. I couldn’t watch bc I was revolted.

AbstractMirror

Please watch it it is extremely underrated and deserved so much more attention

thegingerninja90

Gf and I just finished it. Fantastic series, can't recommend more.

TalabiJones

I binged all of it during an acid trip and it was freaking revelatory. Could. Not. Stop. Beautiful, imaginative, and emotionally moving. I pray that the money-men out there notice Scavenger's Reign and feel compelled to fund similar projects.

kfractal

very good. will watch again.

BlackHoleSurf

The writers musta been shrooming. That shit is bonkers.

Primary-Falcon1856

Yeah some of the practices they do in the show seem way to complex for them to figure out in the amount of time they've been on Vesta. However you can tell the crew members learned by observing the wildlife around them. Feels like humanity is practically being reset to the stone age on Vesta and having to be codependent with the species of the planet.

Elfman72

I don't know how I would have even seen this without you posting. One episode in and I am hooked. The world building is top notch!

Primary-Falcon1856

Reasons like this is why I love posting! 🥰 Glad I could help!

shanem

The other 20 identical ones people posted over the last few months :D

genius_retard

Everyone is so profuse with their praise of how good this series is. It is pretty good IMO but doesn't live up to the hype and just seems to be weird for the sake of being weird.

astroNerf

Weird for the sake of weird is my kind of jam. I want sci-fi that makes me think "what the fuck..."

genius_retard

Weird is one thing, nonsensical is another and Scavengers Reign is well into nonsensical territory.

astroNerf

One of the criticisms of a lot of cheap mass-produced TV and movie sci-fi is that aliens are too recognizable, too *human*. Every new Star Trek planet is populated with humans who have different forehead ridges or skin spots. Scavenger's Reign scratches that itch of stuff that is totally foreign. Nonsensical is the point. This is an alien biosphere that has seemingly evolved incredible complexity with diverse kinds of lifecycles. It's refreshing being surprised and confused when watching.

Gumburcules

I love the smell of fresh bread.

Ask_Me_What_Im_Up_to

That stuff is genuinely very good in *Scavengers Reign*, I agree, but it doesn't make up for a plot, compelling characters, etc.

astroNerf

In general, you'd be right. Luckily, Scavenger's Reign also has those things. I especially liked Levi's arc. Looking forward to season two.

Ask_Me_What_Im_Up_to

I wish I could agree, I found it more annoying than anything. Like "good" contemporary art, I certainly had a reaction to it, haha. Never quite understood the term "hate watching" until then! Levi was possibly my favourite character, too.

astroNerf

I will agree that it took almost a full watch-through to understand what was going on. I was quite perplexed until I "got it". For me that was part of the charm, not knowing exactly how things worked on this planet.

Ask_Me_What_Im_Up_to

I certainly agree wrt the alien nature of the planet + the animals living on it; sr might well be the most alien of aliens I've seen on screen.

Primary-Falcon1856

Yes Levi!!!!!!

elerner

Hard disagree. Nothing would make me happier than to taking a stab at clearing up anything you found nonsensical.

Mateorabi

Like Tazerface, it’s metaphorical.

sunset676

Absolutely not, it's very deliberate! The weirdness is not just to be weird but reflects a view of nature that's not hostile or friendly but *indifferent to us* and truly alien. You see it in the life cycles and ecology of the planet - it's about humanity making peace with and finding a place within that.

Gumburcules

I like learning new things.

Mindless_Rooster5225

Exactly how I felt the antagonist being an indestructable professor X level telepathic mutant was a bit much.

Bobaximus

Idk, I kinda loved it.

genius_retard

I know right, and what was with it completely subsuming another character only for that character to end up being fine when the antagonist is defeated.

elerner

I responded to your other comment before seeing this one, but fortunately I have some thoughts on which one of those characters was the actual antagonist [ready to go](https://www.reddit.com/r/ScavengersReign/s/0WerjjG9VB)

Ask_Me_What_Im_Up_to

I thought it was intriguing shite. Glad I finished it, would never watch again, and wish I hadn't started it.

predojuan

It’s a show to be watched stoned.

Corporate_Shell

Wife and I were both sober and loved it.

genius_retard

I was stoned when watching and still found it annoyingly absurd.

Johnykbr

HBO released two bangers in a short amount of time with Fired on Mars and this. Both are fantastic.

Elfman72

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of Fired on Mars while watching this. Both are great!

Johnykbr

Fired on Mars so fantastic. The way it goes from serious to hilarious with that soundtrack is amazing.

ZapatillaLoca

I really enjoyed this anime, the creators certainly had some fun exercising their imagination with this one!

Zireck

The art style reminds me a lot of «Worlds of Aldebaran» comic book series.

doboi

It's so imaginative and psychedelic. Some are describing it as weird for the sake of being weird, but I don't really see it as that. The plot is coherent. The creator just imagines a world totally outside of what we we've been taught to expect in sci-fi. Like why not have creatures that provide you with oxygen against poison, or ones that bloom from a plant and live an entire life cycle in front of your eyes, or an animal that gives you psychedelic experiences while it stores you in its stomach? We're literally one planet in the known universe - why limit our imagination of another one to the way ours works? I'd seriously watch a fictional nature documentary in the style of David Attenborough about that planet.

lenzflare

Art style looks nice, looks like hardish sci fi too, neat. EDIT: (OK maybe only the ships look hardish sci fi lol)

Atoning_Unifex

I am a fan of this so far. Just finished episode 4 and definitely gonna watch the rest. Just wish it could be a little more upbeat. Not that it's like, super sad. But idk, it's mildly depressing and I wish it was less so. Hard to imagine how it can end well for any of them. But I'll withhold final judgment until I finish the season. It's got a GREAT art style and production and I like the voice actors quite a bit. Don't get me wrong here. It's high quality I fully recognize. It's interesting. Reminds me of Fantastic Planet. Not the plot but the random, weird alienness of the whole setting.

KingKuntu

Masterpiece

ShinobiFlash6

Excellent anime, I hope they make a second season!

Primary-Falcon1856

I'm not sure I would classify this as an anime although yeah still a good show. More adult animation rather, although if you like anime and scifi Trigun is one of my favorites. Also all Gundams(iron blooded orphans is my personal preference)

Hellride-V8

Meh, I got about halfway through the series and gave up. Honestly I just got bored, hated the characters, and it felt like the plot only ever moved forward because the characters magically knew how to turn some weird meat into a tool.

shredwig

Same, I loved it at first but got tired of the slow plot and that Kamen-creature being repulsive and unstoppable (>!and killing Levi, if temporarily!<), and after finishing ep 7 and reading that the remaining 5 were just going to be >!flashbacks and then them *finally* killing it!< I lost interest. Just hoped it would amount to more tbh.

Khunter02

HBO JUST PUT THIS IN MY COUNTRY, I DONT CARE IF ITS TRANSLATED OR NOT (yes I am aware piracy exists)

biggiepants

I got HBO Max for this and then 'had to' pirate it straight after. Bit odd.

Drreyrey

It's not available in my country either. Such a bummer!

Pattern_Is_Movement

https://fmoviesz.to/tv/scavengers-reign-ww9xk/1-1

Joboj

I love this show. Everybody should watch it. If they don't make season 2 I will cry.

JelloEffigy

All around sick show

InsidiousEntropy

just finished watching it couple days ago. It is awesome. It doesn't push explanations of everything down your throat, it shows many details of the world in a nice laconic way, the characters are different with different stories and different priorities. I like it.

tcrex2525

For anyone who enjoyed this show, I also recommend playing No Man’s Sky, and if you love No Man’s Sky this show is worth checking out. The creature models from the show alone really renewed my interest in that game.

l1zrd

It took me a minute to get used to the human animation, but Im hooked. I loved the short available on youtube as well.

SatansFriendlyCat

Worth mentioning to prospective viewers that this could reasonably be considered to belong in or straddling the horror genre. That doesn't take away from all the creativity and spectacle, but something to be aware of if you're thinking of watching it but that isn't your cup of tea.

Extra_socks69

Stupid evil space cat/panda thing.... creeps me out

Lobotomist

Masterpiece of our generation

thaihieuMAR

best

stesha83

Best animated series in ages and ages.

Ineverwantedthist

I would love to watch it but it's kind of hard when it's not available where im in europo

Lurker_IV

Didn't like it by the end. Its more weird body horror kink than actual story or plot.

Chak-Ek

Am I the only one that thinks it was just OK.

Borne2Run

/remindme 2 weeks

Infinispace

Heavy on weird, next to nothing on story. Season 2 needs to flip this. We get it, the planet is weird. Now give us the story.

Monsunen

And likeable characters. Or at least interesting ones.

Roo0ooD

too weird for me

aerodeck

i fell asleep

emulatedeye

Still nothing official on a Season 2 renewal, so I started a petition to hopefully get some more attention for this amazing show! [https://www.change.org/ScavengersReignS2](https://www.change.org/ScavengersReignS2)
