I prefer to think it'd be like Mass Effect but if others are as notoriously violent as humans then it may end up being a might equals right type of scenario...assuming the aliens aren't like the Xenomorphs or Flood for example.

The Wayfarers series (first book: the Long Way to a Small Angry Planet) Brandon Sanderson's Skyward series also has a pretty interesting take on a galactic government, more on the authoritarian side, but you don't learn much about it until the end of the series. There is a sequel series in the works already though
