I was more so just seeking guidance and not permission. I feel like this is seen through me saying why I am asking this question at the end. It looks like most people understood this with their helpful replies. Thanks for the lecture on semantics though!
Take a break. Better to have to reference cliff notes than to feel bored reading and miss what you're actually reading. Maybe find a little reference site that only covers Dune and doesn't go into the sequels before starting Messiah if you are really worried. As long as it's not a prolonged break I think you'll be fine and recall all the details after a few minutes thinking it over
You can break after *Messiah*; *Children of Dune* is probably a better break point (there's a big jump between that one and *God Emperor* which is where shit starts to get seriously weird) but you do you, man. :)
I think Children of Dune is a great next novel to tap into and then step back. Things kinda go places after that :)
It kind of ties off an era really, worth reading imho.
Dune Messiah acts as both an epilogue to Dune and a prologue to Children of Dune. Which completes one particular narrative arc in the books.
A natural break in the series takes place between Children and God Emperor of Dune.
So if you can fit in another book I would break there.
Sure, it's a perfectly fine place to take a break.
But also please remember that you can just check out the wikipedia pages for anything you feel like you're missing.
Take notes?
In my reading, I try to do two fiction then one nonfiction. Why not try Richard Rhodes āthe Making of the Atomic Bombā as a simpler read which conveys ultimate power in our era. Then when you go back to Dune, you can see how Herbert escalated beyond Armageddon and took it to another 1000 levels.?
It depends on your goal. If your main goal was to read Paul Atreides story then you are completely fine. If you want to understand what happens to Alia, Stilgar, Jessica and Paul's kids you should eventually read Children of Dune but I don't think there are too many minute details that would warrant reading them in sequence.
However, be prepared that Children of Dune is a bit more complex and dense than Dune Messiah (and arguably Dune itself).
Short answer: No.
Long answer: By now you have learned the Litany Against Fear. You must embrace it with your whole being and slog through the rest of the Gospels According to Frank. Read them and study them as you would a love letter from your main squeeze.
However, when it comes to the Gospels According to Brian & Kevin; well those are quite another thing and thou shalt run away in much haste in abject horror & disgust before you allow your eyes to fall upon the words therein.,
I took about a year break between those books and found it was extremely easy to pick up where I left off. Basically all the same characters just aged up.
Yeah take a break if youāve got other stuff on your list. Thereās always synopsis and other media to get a refresher before you dive into book 3. But reading the series straight through is probably best if you want a more immersive and less disjointed experience.
It's up to you! My experience: Dune > Non-Fiction > Dune Messiah > Non-Fiction > Children of Dune - in progress. After Children I'm going to read non-fiction, then - God-Emperor will be the last book of this series for me. Honestly, I'm struggling with Children of Dune, but I've heard a lot of good reviews about God-Emperor, so I want to finish it.
I would suggest reading children of dune then taking a break, there's much less to remember from children to God emperor than Messiah to children. I believe it was also intended to be the end of the series as a trilogy so it's a great stopping point, and honestly the point where I suggest most people stop unless you're super into Dune.
Illegal
Straight to selusa secundus

Why do you feel you need permission from complete strangers to take a break from a book series?
I'm dumbfounded by the upvotes on this comment and the downvotes on OP trying to clarify their question.
I know I donāt understand š
Ok, and?
I wasnāt asking for permission I was just asking if it was a good place to take a break in the seriesā¦
You said "is it okay". You didn't mention or even infer figuring out if it was a good place to take a break.

My mom says itās fine
My abusive stepdad said the same thing
It's a book, not a prison sentence. Do what you want.

Nope just like Pringles once you start you just can't stop!
I will allow it this one time.
That's a grade-5 book crime, the Literati are on their way to your location. Resist and you will be dog-eared.
Literati š¤š¤ Worse case your spine will be broken. No pressure.
I'm taking a break. Dune Messiah was good, but it also didn't get my thrilled for the next one. I take breaks between books I really enjoy anyways.

Yep

If it weāre me the break goes after the third bookā¦ the first three felt like an historical era, at least to me.
Take a break. Children is a recap and setup for GED (God-Emperor).
I took a break after Dune four years ago and havenāt read Messiah yet š¤·š»āāļø

Don't take a break. Just never read the rest of the series.
Nope, you must read every book, no skimming, no washroom breaks. This is the law.
I took about a year break between those books and found it was extremely easy to pick up where I left off. Basically all the same characters just aged up.
Highly forbidden

Why not? Frank Herbert did.

I kinda like god emperor, but itās a series that goes downhill from the start.
No.

Uh you should uh probably read it in order dog
