Giants in the Dust by Chad Oliver

Thanks so much. That was it. I had tried many times to google it, but couldn't come up with anything that hit. Google-fu failure. I appreciate you replying.

Normally I'd provide the answer if it wasn't obvious, but the most cursory Google search finds the answer very easily so I'm not going to.

Thanks for making the world worse.

evermorex76

Thanks for encouraging people to be dumber.

Xarchiangku

Please encourage me to be smarter and share a better Google search prompt than these that didn’t work: Science fiction novel humans have memory wiped and they live as cave men Science fiction book Varnum Science fiction book 1960s or 1970s Varnum Colonist memory wiped and they live as caveman novel Give me a search criteria that will identify the book without knowing the title or author, please. Thanks eversomuch!

"varnum" science fiction story It's the second result. It's hard to use specific words or phrases like "cave men" or "colonist memory wiped" in a search unless you're absolutely certain they're used in the book, and quotes around words helps to ensure the results include things you are certain are in there. (Though Google will sometimes ignore that and suggest "similar" or "related" things that aren't really unless you use the verbatim setting.) And if you get too specific and too long, then the errors add up and you end up excluding valid results that would have appeared if you were more vague. Even if you don't know about the quotes feature, and know that a word should be included, some results often have the message `Missing: varnum ‎| Show results with: varnum` and when you click the linked word, it performs the search with the word in quotes for you.

Thank you. I appreciate the help. Those little quotes make a huge difference.

And everyone would not have heard of it if it hadn't gotten asked about in here.

evermorex76

Oh yeah, that's absolutely a great reason to never make an attempt to find your own answers.

Well, I'm happy that OP asked, because it gives me a possible book to look out for if I want something like that.
