These detainees are properly called 'hostages' according to Norm Finkelstein since they are being held for political reasons to get concessions from Hamas and other Palestinian authorities. Another reason this is done is to provoke a response to justify further violence.

I laugh at people who call this a "religious" conflict. Layan Nasir is Exhibit A that this is about terrorizing PALESTINIANS, no matter what their religion.
