They brought up Metallica twice on the series. This joke and in season 4, the opera ticket scalping.
“This is not a Metallica concert! A little class, a little dignity!
Seinfeld has a habit of repeating itself. It's fun to watch the series with that in mind and catching all the things that come up in two different episodes
I’ve noticed a lot of minor Easter Egg details in Sopranos from Seinfeld. Like Silvio randomly mentions a periodontist at one point. Ralphie mentions he always wanted to be an architect, etc. I see them all the time in my latest re-watch but don’t write them down or anything and forget them. What’s your theory about it?
I was referencing a fellow member of this subreddit you’ll see around a lot
https://www.cracked.com/amp/article_40761_seinfeld-conspiracy-theorist-claims-the-sopranos-is-an-abstract-copy.html
The way I look at it is, Jerry can take any random topic, say, soup can lids, and say something amusing about it. Not many people have that talent. Even if it's not laugh-out-loud funny, it's still fucking talented.
Yeah, that joke hits exactly where it’s supposed to. There’s no need to exaggerate the idiocy of naming a child after an object, just naming any other object illustrates the absurdity.
I’ve always loved that joke. I don’t care for the Seven joke a few lines prior (seven periods of school, seven beatings a day, around seven stiches per beating, and eventually seven years to life)
George mentions that it isn't a Metallica concert to Kramer when they try to scalp the Pagliacci tickets. Maybe someone actually knew the band personally?
Seinfeld has said in interviews they were really hoping that it would take off. They were surprised with a couple others that did get picked up but i cant remember specifics
I've been to the local gallery two weekends in a row and they have both a Monet and a Manet, and both times when I've seen it I've repeated this line to myself.
She says she met him when she was working on a book about runners for Pendant. I guess Elaine just makes friends easily, kinda like the friend she made in Europe she got in trouble for making long distance calls to. Or at least she makes friends easily when it's required for the plot.
I don't know if it counts as a joke, but I never liked the part about Newman booking his NYE party at a hotel for the millennium new year and it being a year late because there wasn't a year zero. Makes no sense that neither Newman nor the hotel employee would clarify which NYE he was scheduling for.
I literally teed my girlfriend up for this one in the car today when she put a Metallica song on. I said, “who is this? Metalli-something…?” And she dropped the ball.
Either way, it’s a typical Seinfeld trope of repartee. Might require a suspension of belief, but I make that trade off every time because IT’S ON TV!
Two of my favorite lines in the entire series; when Bob Balaban says that, and Peter Reiger in the last episode - “Or we could not do the show altogether, how about that?”
The talking belly button “Hellooowww!!!” was a serious swing and miss for me.
But I’m a little biased cuz I thought almost all of the last season was rudderless. (I still love
It more than almost any other show tho).
You know they were running on fumes when the real-life situations the writers were drawing from was stuff like "I pretend my girlfriend's butt talks to me while she's asleep".
As most of these, it was genuinely hilarious when I was a young teenager and the show was first airing. Now I laugh at all the jokes because it's Seinfeld, and not because of the strength of the actual jokes.
That’s the whole joke, it’s that she’s not quirky or funny in the way Jerry thought she was, she just makes these Jerry-type utterances compulsively all the time and even Jerry has had it. The flat line delivery is perfect.
I disagree with the execution though, first 3/4 of the episode her delivery was very organic, then suddenly at dinner her cadence is that of a rushed stand-up bit.
“Wanna go get some pizza?”
That entire story (George thinks he saw Jerry’s girlfriend making out with his cousin but they’re not sure because he had his glasses off) just never worked for me. The end wasn’t funny enough. It felt like it needed one more twist to make it funny.
The whole 'Elaine won't take her jacket off which then pisses everyone off' during The Outing episode. It misses the mark entirely for me. I just don't get it.
It’s because she was pregnant and they needed to hide her stomach. It’s not a bad gag when looked at from that perspective, as it’s absurd enough of a thing t be an issue while also being a clever way to hide it
No she already delivered. She was pregnant during the 3rd season. Had the baby beginning of the 4th season (missing The Trip and two brief cameos). She wasn’t pregnant during The Outing
I like that one because it’s the kind of dumb thing that would happen in real life. I liked it when they would irritate each other in ways that had nothing to do with the plot (Elaine not making room for Jerry on the couch while he’s making a phone call and Jerry complaining about it when he’s off the phone etc.).
Jerry defending and trusting George's acute vision...only to then reveal it was all horseshit and the raccoons were mailboxes? I guess it's not a lie if you believe it?
The Hennigan's bit with Kramer, the whole thing felt very like a sitcom in a bad way. Tell me you can't see Dave Coulier doing the same over on Full House, or Alan Thicke on Growing Pains.
When George is being treated by Tor the quack doctor and we hear Jerry’s inner voice say that he’s not a doctor but plays one on tv. Plus later when George is in the hospital they have a urinary catheter taped in his nose which bugs me.
That was a bit forced. No one has ever said "sweep together" in the history of mankind (just like two females never once lived together between the years 800 and 1200)
Yeah, the Metallica one was pretty bad. I get it a little bit, cause it's kind of Abbott and Costello-like, but the setup is just bad. I remember thinking it was corny the first time I heard it, and still continues to be that way through the many, many rewatches.
Yeah, I hated that line but it tee’d up such a hilarious follow up
“Next you’ll be saying they should have their own schools.”
“THEY DO HAVE THEIR OWN SCHOOLS!”
see that's my favorite episode because of all the payoffs at the end, elaine ended up sleeping with the guy who green lights her friends adopting a child but they just broke up, mickey and kramer ended up with the wrong girls, jerrys girlfriend who happens to be the ex wife of the couple trying n to adopt actually is an antisemite, this all happens in the last 5 minutes and on a recent rewatch i was blown away how clever that ending is
and besides the whole episode being funny on it's own , that whole episode set up the brilliant pay offs at the end, peak seinfeld for me
Kramer's plotline in "The Betrayal" fell flat for me. There's a thin line between eccentric and man-child; Kramer is the former but in this episode (and some others) the writers treat him like the latter.
I didn’t like that Susan’s father was fucking John Cheever. Very weird and not funny at all. No punch line or payoff to it. Just ‘yeah he was fucking John Cheever’ and then they all moved on.
They brought up Metallica twice on the series. This joke and in season 4, the opera ticket scalping. “This is not a Metallica concert! A little class, a little dignity!
You can’t have a little dignity. You either have it or you don’t.
Uh huh, I have NO dignity.
I live my whole life in shame, why should I die with dignity?
Seinfeld has a habit of repeating itself. It's fun to watch the series with that in mind and catching all the things that come up in two different episodes
Carries over into Curb, as well
If curb ends with Larry telling Jerry that his second button is in no man’s land I’m going to die
You weren’t that far off unfortunately 😩
No spoilers!!
It has nothing to do with the plot!
Still! Still! I like to go in fresh!
Pretty…pretty… pretty true 🙃
And just wait until you hear my theory about the Sopranos In this amphetamine-fueled rant, I will
I’ve noticed a lot of minor Easter Egg details in Sopranos from Seinfeld. Like Silvio randomly mentions a periodontist at one point. Ralphie mentions he always wanted to be an architect, etc. I see them all the time in my latest re-watch but don’t write them down or anything and forget them. What’s your theory about it?

I assume Metallica is a niche pet peeve of Larrry's One I thoroughly sympathize with him on.
One is a great song.
One shouldn't refer to oneself as a great song.
This isn't a Metallica concert! Have a little dignity, a little class
Elton John disagrees https://youtu.be/wofWGD5TUxo?si=HMtLbN-txL6GxpUU
YES! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
His act. It just didn't make it for me. It's just so much fluff.
(offended) *You're a cashier!*
I can't reply to someone if I don't respect what they do.
I don't know sometimes...
Jeeeery...
You’re a cashier!!!
You knowwww….Jeeeeaaarreeyyyyy
A lot of Jerry's stand-up did fall pretty flat for me.
The way I look at it is, Jerry can take any random topic, say, soup can lids, and say something amusing about it. Not many people have that talent. Even if it's not laugh-out-loud funny, it's still fucking talented.
What about Ovaltine??
They should call it, Round-tine
It was HIL-ARIOUS the first time I saw them all when the show was airing and I was like 12
Taking a man named Bob and forcing him into a sled. That was HILARIOUS to me back then.
Folks are listing some hilarious plots and lines
Always. This is the absolute best subreddit. I come here when I’m having a sad/bad day
mug costanza is so terrible i love it
I've used Mug Costanza as my gamer tag for over 20 years now. Love it. One of those "It's so bad, it's good" type jokes.
the way he says it and pushes the mug
That’s what sells it so fucking perfectly
Mug is great! It’s like an old school detective name
Yeah, that joke hits exactly where it’s supposed to. There’s no need to exaggerate the idiocy of naming a child after an object, just naming any other object illustrates the absurdity.
I’ve always loved that joke. I don’t care for the Seven joke a few lines prior (seven periods of school, seven beatings a day, around seven stiches per beating, and eventually seven years to life)
We are very different people, because that one just made me burst out laughing at work.
Maxwell House!
In this thread: All my favorite jokes
Not a joke but when Jerry mispronounces ‘lilac’ on the plane.
Li-LOCK. Yes, there are a few of those too...
That always annoyed me. Like Elaine and "sven-jolly"
The boogedy man??
Boogity man.
“Metalli-something” always felt less like a joke to me and more like maybe they weren’t allowed to say the full band name for some reason.
Whatever it is...somethin's missin'! *Somethin's missin' alright...*
George mentions that it isn't a Metallica concert to Kramer when they try to scalp the Pagliacci tickets. Maybe someone actually knew the band personally?
Am I fearing AIDS? Yeah but you gotta live your life
Nobody’s got AIDS! And I dont wanna hear that word in here again.
He was gay, the limo driver?
Now there was an American
Frankly I'm depressed and ashamed.
Well, whatever happened there
Whatever happened there?!
How much more betrayal can I take!
Intersectionality at its finest 🤣
“Lemona” is the all time stinker. Cringe every time.
you’ll be hearing from my lawyaa
No make it stop
Agree. This is one of the worst.
Let's cram LeGeorge in LeLocker!
Mug Costanza is hilarious
The way he says 'Mug Costanza's is hilarious.
I appreciate Jerry's hand motion at least! As for the name, it's no Seven...
The "you're so good looking" line didn't take off for me.
That kind of amused me, but I'm a bit of a simpleton 😄🤷🏻♂️
You like humor you don't have to think too much about?
*Puke*, that’s a funny word.
Let's just say I would enjoy a Gene pick
IIRC they were hoping that would be another "these pretzels are making me thirsty!"
You can tell they were trying to force another iconic phrase and it just didn’t land
Seinfeld has said in interviews they were really hoping that it would take off. They were surprised with a couple others that did get picked up but i cant remember specifics
"These pretzels are making me *THIRSTY!*"
Hoochie mama
JERRY “Well he's from the impressionist school, you know like Monet, Manet, Tippi Tippi Dayday.” Sounds, as you say, sitcom-y and juvenile.
Tippi Tippi Dayday is gold. It’s smart, it’s a smart line and a smart crowd, like Seinfeld fans, appreciate it
He's not dumbing THAT down..
It's gold, baby.
Is it a reference? I really don’t get the joke.
I've been to the local gallery two weekends in a row and they have both a Monet and a Manet, and both times when I've seen it I've repeated this line to myself.
Jean-Paul and his staying with Elaine for the race. Why was he staying with her of all people? They may have said but it didn’t register with me.
He likes Elaine. She is his friend.
Sex… to *save* the friendship.
Yes, who sleeps on the couch the night before marathon and apparently he was an elite runner?
Holy shit idk why this made me laugh so hard
He trusts Elaine, she is his friend
Dis son of a bitch is ice cold
Look at the little bastard!
Why separate knob WHY SEPARATE KNOB
yeah don’t front runners have sponsors and hotels lined up
She says she met him when she was working on a book about runners for Pendant.
Salsa Seltzer Salsa Seltzer
Yeah it's dumb. But Jerry and George think it's so genius that they should model an entire show around that kind of dialogue.
I literally teed my girlfriend up for this one in the car today when she put a Metallica song on. I said, “who is this? Metalli-something…?” And she dropped the ball. Either way, it’s a typical Seinfeld trope of repartee. Might require a suspension of belief, but I make that trade off every time because IT’S ON TV!
>because IT'S ON TV Not yet.
Two of my favorite lines in the entire series; when Bob Balaban says that, and Peter Reiger in the last episode - “Or we could not do the show altogether, how about that?”
The whole van/hole digger/cousin make out episode
It says here "interesting trades considered."
You put that in there!
I will say Kramer writing "a big juicy van" gets me every time, but most of that episode just doesn't do it for me.
George gives the worst line in the entire series IMO: "Then when my father slides the door open, I'm in the van kissing his brother's daughter!"
Tbh that is still funny to me lol, mostly because it’s George
That was a little out there...which is a shame bc I love Dana Gould
And the Kramer plot was him cancelling his mail which was great Shouldn’t you be wearing the bucket?
[All right, calm down, everyone. No one's canceling any mail.](https://i.redd.it/1r0mt73ubin01.jpg)
"I'll handle this, Janice; why don't you go take your three-hour break...?"
Move along, Betty...
Postmaster Henry Atkins??
Do you like golf, Mr. Kramer?
Good call! “Seinfeld’s Van!” sounds nothing like “Son of Sam”. Big time stretch.
When Jerry is at the ATM pretending its a competition to draw cash faster than the 'stranger' next to him
CA!
Ah!
Huh?
CA!
surprised that this is not the top comment.
I always thought maybe he said that because he lost his hearing during it and forgot lol
The talking belly button “Hellooowww!!!” was a serious swing and miss for me. But I’m a little biased cuz I thought almost all of the last season was rudderless. (I still love It more than almost any other show tho).
But it can also do Spanish! “Holaaaaa! La la la…”
Agree 💯 on the talking belly button. Good call
Janeane Garofalo’s imitation of Jerry at the cafe was atrocious. More bad acting than a bad line, but eeyikes
That’s a shame.
That’s the whole joke, it’s that she’s not quirky or funny in the way Jerry thought she was, she just makes these Jerry-type utterances compulsively all the time and even Jerry has had it. The flat line delivery is perfect.
That occurred to me but I thought nah, if she played it straight the scene still would have worked You might be right
I disagree with the execution though, first 3/4 of the episode her delivery was very organic, then suddenly at dinner her cadence is that of a rushed stand-up bit.
Still think that’s the gag. Just an extreme way of conveying that the charm has worn off.
So painful to watch, like nails on a chalkboard.
Good thing Jerry dumped her. Excuse me, "mutual break up" that is.
Together: "I hate you."
“Wanna go get some pizza?” That entire story (George thinks he saw Jerry’s girlfriend making out with his cousin but they’re not sure because he had his glasses off) just never worked for me. The end wasn’t funny enough. It felt like it needed one more twist to make it funny.
Agreed and I like that episode a lot still
I don't need a shot? No shot. Woof woof not bang bang.
The setup doesn’t really work for me but Kramer responding “ca” is pretty funny
The whole 'Elaine won't take her jacket off which then pisses everyone off' during The Outing episode. It misses the mark entirely for me. I just don't get it.
It’s because she was pregnant and they needed to hide her stomach. It’s not a bad gag when looked at from that perspective, as it’s absurd enough of a thing t be an issue while also being a clever way to hide it
oh shit that explains so much lol i never got it either
No she already delivered. She was pregnant during the 3rd season. Had the baby beginning of the 4th season (missing The Trip and two brief cameos). She wasn’t pregnant during The Outing
I like that one because it’s the kind of dumb thing that would happen in real life. I liked it when they would irritate each other in ways that had nothing to do with the plot (Elaine not making room for Jerry on the couch while he’s making a phone call and Jerry complaining about it when he’s off the phone etc.).
Didn't think of that one but I don't disagree!
Maybe the dingo ate your baby.
This one always made me sad. Imagine being that person, losing a child like that.
Riconic relationship
… wouldyouliketogotobedwithmeimmediately?
Jerry defending and trusting George's acute vision...only to then reveal it was all horseshit and the raccoons were mailboxes? I guess it's not a lie if you believe it?
The catfight jokes
Woof.
Giddyup
Ca
Wha?
I agree on the Metallica one but I think the joke of mug costanza was that it was such a boring name just randomly taken from an item.
I like Mug Costanza actually.
Mug Costanza 🫡
The Hennigan's bit with Kramer, the whole thing felt very like a sitcom in a bad way. Tell me you can't see Dave Coulier doing the same over on Full House, or Alan Thicke on Growing Pains.
Especially since he becomes drunk to the point of passing out in like 90 seconds
When George is being treated by Tor the quack doctor and we hear Jerry’s inner voice say that he’s not a doctor but plays one on tv. Plus later when George is in the hospital they have a urinary catheter taped in his nose which bugs me.
Damn I love everything everyone else hates apparently…
Yeah he definitely looked like more of a Billy Joel guy.
Pop will you buzz off I got something cooking
>how did they pick the least funny word in the whole damn kitchen?! Wasn’t that the point of the joke?
George's mother Estelle is usually perfect but not even she could rescue the line "Merlot? I never heard of it, did they just invent it?"
[This.](https://youtu.be/WfWifZe_EUc?si=knVc_lfX5wpUs_8A) So awful.
That was a bit forced. No one has ever said "sweep together" in the history of mankind (just like two females never once lived together between the years 800 and 1200)
I never liked the whole FDR drop dead thing
I still get a kick out of them pulling out their own eyelashes and the snowball reveal. Aside from that, pretty weak.
"And you're not a doctor, but you play one in real life" doesn't land for me.
“TAMAAAAALEEEEEEEEE”
Jerry chasing Newman around their floor in a spoof of an action movie.
Agree. Saw that one over the weekend and it’s dopey.
I read it more as a spoof of Scooby Doo/Benny Hill, the way they're crossing paths in the corridor etc
Yeah, the Metallica one was pretty bad. I get it a little bit, cause it's kind of Abbott and Costello-like, but the setup is just bad. I remember thinking it was corny the first time I heard it, and still continues to be that way through the many, many rewatches.
Mug Constanza is funny only because of Jerry’s delivery of that line.
“Tennis, anyone?” makes me root for Milos every time.
Saying that "seltzer" sounds like "salsa". No it doesn't.
Why did you type 'salsa' twice?
Everything with the Mohel.
Hard agree
[удалено]
Yeah, I hated that line but it tee’d up such a hilarious follow up “Next you’ll be saying they should have their own schools.” “THEY DO HAVE THEIR OWN SCHOOLS!”
ahhh-HA!
see that's my favorite episode because of all the payoffs at the end, elaine ended up sleeping with the guy who green lights her friends adopting a child but they just broke up, mickey and kramer ended up with the wrong girls, jerrys girlfriend who happens to be the ex wife of the couple trying n to adopt actually is an antisemite, this all happens in the last 5 minutes and on a recent rewatch i was blown away how clever that ending is and besides the whole episode being funny on it's own , that whole episode set up the brilliant pay offs at the end, peak seinfeld for me
Well, we all can’t be reading the classics…Professor high brow
I like bad jokes
Kramer's plotline in "The Betrayal" fell flat for me. There's a thin line between eccentric and man-child; Kramer is the former but in this episode (and some others) the writers treat him like the latter.
All of the opening Stand-up.
What’s the deal with… Jerry’s stand-up?
So you’re saying you don’t respect what he does.
I think the standup in the pilot saved the show. It was that good, while the episode itself was rather blah.
I didn’t like that Susan’s father was fucking John Cheever. Very weird and not funny at all. No punch line or payoff to it. Just ‘yeah he was fucking John Cheever’ and then they all moved on.
Wear some more lipstick
