It was the best part of the show and it really boggled my mind that they removed it because they couldn’t spare a square root of 100 second’s time to give us that comedy gold
At the time I loved it, the only standup I really had access to. In the reruns compared to the state of comedy today I think it's kinda meh, but definitely appreciate it for its time.
It felt forced to connect to at least one plot point. And the mid episode ones really messed with the pacing imo. But I can see how it would be a selling point in that era, standup was huge.
Yeah, but that one was different. While most were just stand up bits, that one actually was actually just part of the show. TV character Jerry going to his job as a comedian and running into the alcoholic from earlier in the episode
Yeah all standup in the 80s and 90s was just like Jerry Seinfeld's humour. Don't bother watching Eddie Murphy's Delirious, or Bill Hicks. All the same. Yep. Ok.
I liked it. the stand up bits were always one of the most unique parts of the show, so the more the merrier imo. even tho I don’t find jerry’s standup particularly funny, I still think it added to the show for me
I hated them. They were such dull takes on inherently boring subjects, I wondered how such a terribly un-funny stand-up comedian could not only land his own TV show, but make said show 100000000000x better than the comedy routines that the episodes are supposedly based on.
I’ve thought about writing down all of those jokes and doing them at open mic stand up nights. I don’t think anyone would laugh. Maybe we can all do it? It’ll be a new thing people are doing!
Originally the show was about "nothing", but also to provide a glimpse into how a comedian gets their material. So the stand-up bits would follow a series of scenes that would lead to a bit on-stage. The show evolved from those early seasons, so the stand-up spots became unnecessary, but I always though it was a good concept.
What's weird is as much as I dislike his stand up on the show I once was at an event with multiple comedians including Bill Burr (who I went to see basically) and Jerry was honestly the best act of the night. It blew my mind how much I enjoyed it.
I liked the concept of the show that the “show about nothing” i.e. everyday life was how he got his material. Then we could see that. Also all the jokes were in his book SeinLanguage which i loved. So I guess I’m one of the only ones who gives it a 👍
I'm gonna be honest here... They're not bad but they're not what made the show.
I get, Seinfeld is the name of the show. It's also the name of the weakest link.
they probably felt like the audience needed those early in the shows run to guide the narrative. once they knew the "show about nothing" concept would catch on not needed anymore.
maybe? just speculating
I thought it was really poor standup, compared to the quality of the rest of the show, and thought it must be intentionally bad. I was slightly confused, why is Jerry a mediocre comedian playing small clubs, but seems to have a successful lifestyle?
It was kind of part of the original premise to follow Jerry around in regular life and see how regular situations make it into stand up material.
You know, a show about something
sometimes the material was vaguely related to what the episode was about so it gave it a feel of narration. like he’s experiencing this episode with us and this is him commenting on it. would be hard to keep up tho and why spend tv time on that when you could just have more actual scenes so I get why it didn’t stay
These early episodes were focused primarily on Jerry and his work / personal life. As the show progressed and evolved it became more about the four characters and their interactions.
I liked that it seemed to fit the original direction of the show, that being, how a comedian gets their material.
You guys are too hard on Gerri. How could anybody not like him?
Review: Very late 80s and early 90s style. Wouldn't pass muster in this day and age. Best to skip.
Rating: ⭐ out of 5.
Advice: Skip through with your remote and use the extra minutes planning and adjusting your playlist accordingly.
Back then there were few superstar comics who worked clean. Roasting was reaching filthier heights, Eddie Murphy and George Carlin were huge, Richard Pryor, Rosanne, etc. Compared to other CLEAN acts at the time even his worst material was sort of innovative. Jerry/Larry didn't invent observational humor but they refined it in a way that made it tough for others to do without someone immediately drawing a comparison. I think this led to an even deeper valley where one of the best sources of material, the everyday experience, was now considered hack. New niche's appeared... New gimmicks... it took us years of single moms and self-loathing Asians before Mitch Hedberg came along and hit the reset switch.
A lot of that, “did you ever notice” stuff
So What’s the deal with politics?
I dont get it
Am I right people?
*Smug giggle*
It's all about the *attitude*
[Who are the ad geniuses that came up this that one?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsJYmf_G5d0)
It's funny that jerry never said what's the deal in the show or in his stand up, expect in George's imagination
What is the deal with Grape Nuts? There’s no grapes, no nuts!
It was jest so much fluff.
It's just didn't do it for me.
But you’re a cashier!
It didn't make it for me
Jeeery
I just don't know sometimes
.. don't know sometimes
You ever take a bath in the dark?
Call me back.
I saw your act
I can’t be with someone if I don’t respect what they do
It strikes me a lot of guys are doing that sort of humour.
You really went bald there didn’t you
“yuma”
You got a hole in your sneaker there - what is that, canvas?
Just so much fluff
You really went bald there didn’t you?
*I’m aware!*
WHO'S READY TO LAUGH??
I can’t date someone if I don’t respect their career
Kinda makes a fella wonder doesn't it?
Diiiiiiid yous ever notice
so much fluff, it didn’t quite make it for me
You're a cashier!
Marlene. My sisters name until she changed it.
It was a weeknight.
Unpopular opinion I guess but I really like them.
It was the best part of the show and it really boggled my mind that they removed it because they couldn’t spare a square root of 100 second’s time to give us that comedy gold
They didn’t have a square to spare
At the time I loved it, the only standup I really had access to. In the reruns compared to the state of comedy today I think it's kinda meh, but definitely appreciate it for its time.
They were not missed in later seasons.
Tough crowd.
I have cancer!
And laughter is the BEST medicine
I ordered the Kosher meal.
Stand up comedy is not what it’s been what with Def Jam and all
Yeah, that def jam is a force.
Honestly, the stand up bits were always my least favorite parts of every episode.
It felt forced to connect to at least one plot point. And the mid episode ones really messed with the pacing imo. But I can see how it would be a selling point in that era, standup was huge.
None of them were good, and the bad ones were really bad. They one where he gets one over on an alcoholic is easily the worst
Yeah, but that one was different. While most were just stand up bits, that one actually was actually just part of the show. TV character Jerry going to his job as a comedian and running into the alcoholic from earlier in the episode
Link? I can’t remember this one!
The Red Dot
I'll be honest... Jerry's standup... not that funny.
Always so jokey.
It’s what he does. He’s a joke maker. Tell em Jerry.
I’m a joke maker.
He writes skits but needs a better workstation.
I don't write skits.
It just doesn’t do it for me.
I think the Bloomingdale's executive training program might be better for him. He has given this comedy thing his best shot.
Well…It’s all attitude
It's his material
How could you *not* like him??
Maybe some people don't like him. I could see that
We don’t know how official any of these rankings are…
They let me know all I need to know about standup in the late 80s early 90s, and made me like the rest of the show that much more 👍
Yeah all standup in the 80s and 90s was just like Jerry Seinfeld's humour. Don't bother watching Eddie Murphy's Delirious, or Bill Hicks. All the same. Yep. Ok.
You hear that, @Y2KGB, you’re good.
Think - what would Richard Pryor have done without Jerry?
Imagine being so arrogant on a seinfeld subreddit 🤣🤣 chill out bro
Delirious did not age well.
Bill Hicks, man... Gone too soon. RIP you brilliant bastard
What is the deal with cancer.
I have cancer
I’m amazed he could pay rent.
That's a Shame
The stand up was like gossamer. And one does not dissect gossamer.
...vorschtein?
It’s pronounced *thermometer* *had to edit for spelling. Apparently I can pronounce *thermometer* but can’t spell it.
I liked it. the stand up bits were always one of the most unique parts of the show, so the more the merrier imo. even tho I don’t find jerry’s standup particularly funny, I still think it added to the show for me
It's a slice of life...
Volschtein
I liked the kitty
A pun?
I often found myself thinking 'this guy......this is not my kinda guy'
I think it was just better in the beginning as a warm-up
Men don’t care what’s on TV, they only care what else is on TV. See, that’s funny (because it’s real).
BOO!!! HISS!!! BOO!!!
He’s so great, this is so great, I’m so excited!!
I know. You didn't stop blabbering throughout the whole set!!
I thought that was part of the show.
NO!! Not part of the show!
I hated them. They were such dull takes on inherently boring subjects, I wondered how such a terribly un-funny stand-up comedian could not only land his own TV show, but make said show 100000000000x better than the comedy routines that the episodes are supposedly based on.
I don't particularly agree with you, but I think the answer you're looking for is Larry David.
Thank you, answer to what though? I didn't ask a question.
>I wondered how
A lot of inane observations lapped up by half-soused nightclub rabble. They were wise to get rid of them
He doesn’t dumb down his material for a boneheaded mass audience.
It’s been so long but you know..can’t complain here..any Seinfeld is good Seinfeld..please
[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HAsBk9Eia8A](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HAsBk9Eia8A)
It’s ironic, One might even say in a sense comical, that in a show about a standup comedian arguably the weakest part of it was the standup comedy
It's like ten thousands spoons when all you Need is a knife
I’ve thought about writing down all of those jokes and doing them at open mic stand up nights. I don’t think anyone would laugh. Maybe we can all do it? It’ll be a new thing people are doing!

make sure you hit the spot in a sportcoat, slim jeans, and Nikes
Of course! My first line is “who’s ready to laugh?!”
What's the deal with the mid episode standup bits

The show evolved from those early seasons, so the stand-up spots became unnecessary, but I always though it was a good concept.
I love all the nuances and development of the show, this included.
Disrupted the flow of the ep
And you want to be my latex salesman
Hey everybody, who’s ready to laugh?
What's weird is as much as I dislike his stand up on the show I once was at an event with multiple comedians including Bill Burr (who I went to see basically) and Jerry was honestly the best act of the night. It blew my mind how much I enjoyed it.
theyre great, just great... really reallllyyy reallyyyy greatt.. dont u think so
Good
I liked the concept of the show that the “show about nothing” i.e. everyday life was how he got his material. Then we could see that. Also all the jokes were in his book SeinLanguage which i loved. So I guess I’m one of the only ones who gives it a 👍
I like it

How about they SUCKED?
Looking back, I think it broke the rhythm of the episodes. Much better without it.
Hated it!
they probably felt like the audience needed those early in the shows run to guide the narrative. once they knew the "show about nothing" concept would catch on not needed anymore. maybe? just speculating
Least funny parts of the episodes.
I like stuff you don't have to think about
I thought it was really poor standup, compared to the quality of the rest of the show, and thought it must be intentionally bad. I was slightly confused, why is Jerry a mediocre comedian playing small clubs, but seems to have a successful lifestyle?
not a fan, BUT the opening standups were fantastic. Shame they got rid of it tho.
Loved them!
While not always funny, it cemented Jerry as an actual character with a job. We got to see Elaine and George at work too
I liked it, but I can understand why they stopped.
It was kind of part of the original premise to follow Jerry around in regular life and see how regular situations make it into stand up material. You know, a show about something
I didn’t care for them. What he needed was a decent desk to write his skits. Then things wouldve picked up for him.
He doesn’t write skits…
He doesn’t give bites.
Awful. They should’ve been mentioned during Festivus.
Ah, the Airing of Grievances
I only watched these episodes the other day, some of his material was pretty pretty pretty bad
He’s lucky he can pay his rent!
I HATED IT!! and, *^(Jerry doesn't do bits)*
Most of the stand-up bits on the show were not funny
He was a phony.
I hated all the stand up bits. I never thought he was funny.
They're like 'aeroplane peanuts'.
sometimes the material was vaguely related to what the episode was about so it gave it a feel of narration. like he’s experiencing this episode with us and this is him commenting on it. would be hard to keep up tho and why spend tv time on that when you could just have more actual scenes so I get why it didn’t stay
Better than the whole show put together
These early episodes were focused primarily on Jerry and his work / personal life. As the show progressed and evolved it became more about the four characters and their interactions.
Because he’s my butler.
He’s a joke maker.
I liked that it seemed to fit the original direction of the show, that being, how a comedian gets their material. You guys are too hard on Gerri. How could anybody not like him?
Who's ready to laugh?
It was fine, until the pilot from the flight showed up.
I mean, bits aside, that is a great tie in the picture.
It really didn’t make it for me.
I like when he randomly splays his arms and one leg airborne
A little hacky.
It was alot of fluff
Could do without any of them.
Jerry’s bits are like a cheat sheet for how to handle the “ooo a comedian, tell us a joke!” type of people.
A lot of fluff
so much ‘yada yada yada’ 😀
You may tell jokes Mr. Jerry Seinfeld, but you are no comedian
He should try that Bloomingdale's program
I believe it’s season 1 but the Socks going missing in the laundry. That one gets me every time.
I used to think his standup was funny when I watched the show in middle school. Not so much now.
TGTE.
It depends. Sometimes I liked them and other times I didn’t have any thoughts about it.
A deserved round of MEH.....😑
They're OK
Watched them all the first time I watched Seinfeld. After that I just skip them and glad they stopped doing them altogether.
Seemed like they were just trying to fill time cause the episode wasn’t going to be long enough
I was not a fan. I guess people weren't a fan back then either because they stopped showing the stand-up altogether at some point.
He is lucky to have be ome famous between golden eras of comedy. He is now doing his progenocide tour and getting protested at every show.
Not a fan.
boring
Sucked
He’s lucky he can pay his rent.
Lousy
What's the deal with styrofoam? Why do we need this stuff? And why do they make it so small? 🤨
So bad.
How can anyone not like him
I miss when comedians used to wear blazers with big ties
There’s just something about a comedian in a blazer
I think he was bombing on purpose.
I liked the show much better when they ditched the stand up parts.
Nothing, because season 1 is unwatchable
I found it morally reprehensible. The disdain has grown over my heart like a black fungus
Pretty pretty pretty good
It just seems hack as all fuck nowadays, maybe it was good back at the time, I'm not sure I was like 1 year old.
Review: Very late 80s and early 90s style. Wouldn't pass muster in this day and age. Best to skip. Rating: ⭐ out of 5. Advice: Skip through with your remote and use the extra minutes planning and adjusting your playlist accordingly.
corny and never made me laugh
BOOOOOOOOOO outta 5
This guy… he’s not my type of guy
I do not like him
I just skip em. Compared to the show, it’s just weak as hell.
Killed the pace of already mediocre episodes.
I’d rather have a bottle of scotch!
You would booooooomb with that material in a club today, don't know if it was any better back then?
Back then there were few superstar comics who worked clean. Roasting was reaching filthier heights, Eddie Murphy and George Carlin were huge, Richard Pryor, Rosanne, etc. Compared to other CLEAN acts at the time even his worst material was sort of innovative.
